Figured I'd begin my own thread with my personal experience with this new entry level PCP so as not to step on toes of others and their reviews.
I stated 'entry level' because at $300 that exactly what it is. But that price is the only thing 'entry level' about this gun. Everything else is above and beyond what you would expect for $300.

I bought my gun from R&L Airgun Supply....
https://www.rlairgunsupply.com/search.asp?keyword=av+avenger (https://www.rlairgunsupply.com/search.asp?keyword=av+avenger)
I paid $300 and shipping was free. It was 5 days from order to delivery but that time included a weekend.

I topped it off with the UTG 3-12x44 AO SWAT Accushot EI scope...

I also added the UTG Rubber armored bipod....

Spare mags are around $11 ea. and I ordered 2 to add to the 2 that were included with the gun.

Packaging from AV and R&L was great. The gun is in a plastic bag and set into a form fitted insert in the box. Spare mags and an Allen wrench were also taped into their respective compartment. Nothing rolling around or sticking out through the side of the box. The the whole thing was double boxed with bubble pack to keep the inner box in place.
Pictures to follow.....

..... to be continued.

Congratulations on your new 25 cal. Avenger.... Bill ! ;)

Thanks guys.. I started this thread this morning before work while having my coffee. I only had time to shoot a couple mags through the gun and get the scope sighted in at a mere 21yds. I was shooting the H&N Crow Mag 26 grainers. I was absolutely amazed at what I saw. I am really looking forward to seeing what this gun can do.
I haven't touched 1 single adjustment screw since I took the gun out of the box. After 4 shots to sight it in I thought something was wrong because I didn't see my pellets hitting the target any more.... after closer inspection I found out why. The pellets were going into the exact same hole.... :o
If this thing will do 4 mags before dropping off of the reg, I'm not going to touch a thing. I'll leave the reg set at 2900 and fill to 3800. Again, my max range will be 45 to 50 yds. My covered shooting range is about 35yds. max.
-
Congrats, Bill, on your new Avenger .25 cal.
I look forward to hearing all about this gun. Since I have lower back issues, I can't see me ever getting a pump for a PCP; but, hey, I can dream or even enjoy the fun that you and others are having.

Archie.... I've been filling my PCP guns for 2 years or so with a $200 Vevor (Yong Heng knockoff) compressor. I use a large Folgers coffee container as a water supply. If the water starts getting a bit warm, I just dump it in the sink and fill it back up. I filled that gun last night from 2900 psi to just under 4k in just over a minute and the temp got to 145F. It began at an ambient 85F.

I'm subscribed purely for comedic relief. ;D

You only know me too well Zackman.

This seems to be one of those few times where the actual product lives up to the pre production hype. I really enjoy mine, it has taken over as my No. 1 truck gun currently.
-
There are a couple of things I'm waiting to hear from those that have Avengers, are the mags for these holding up better (spring wire) than the mags that came with the Nova Liberty, and do the better mags for the Gauntlet also fit the Avenger? Both of my Liberty mags had to have the spring wire glued into the hole or they would pop loose and not feed correctly, have had Zero issues with the Gauntlet mags feeding properly. If I sell my Discovery to a friend from work I"m still considering one of these for my collection.

You said it brother!!! I have the .22 and I really like it. I think " like " is an understatement! I was going to get a higher end .25 but now i'm not to sure. I think I'll wait and see how the .22 holds up over the next few months. If it dose, cant see me spending $1000 plus when I can just get another avenger in .25!!! :D
-
Tom...
I'll have to let you know later on that.... I've only shot 2 of my mags one time each. The other 2 are still in the bags they came in. If you look at the link above see that PA says they fit the Aspen and the Avenger. They do claim they are reverse compatible which I take as they will fit the same in guns that take the MRod mags. However, you'll notice that the slot on the clear plastic cover on these mags is oblong in shape. I don't think the older mags will work in the Avenger.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong'
Scratch that..... I just looked up the Marauder mags and they look the same.
-
It's certainly not a deal-breaker, I was planning to buy a 25cal anyway and all my gauntlet mags are 22cal for my Liberty anyway. I was just remembering all the posts from Liberty owners who had issues with the springs popping loose and was wondering if they had corrected that issue. I'm also still waiting for someone to break one down so I can get a good look at the poppet in the valve.

Yeah.... that won't be me.... I don't care what it looks like, as long as it works. When it quits working it will be sent in for warranty, sent to a tuner to fix or sold as parts in the classifieds... ;)
Life is too short and I only have enough hair to last the rest of my life. I'm not going to start pulling it out over a $300 airgun... besides, this one should last until the next world's greatest 'entry level" PCP hits the streets.
-
.... and if it don't.... I have a whole house full of guns that will. :o
-
This may be a good place to make this clear....
You fellas that have subscribed in the hopes that you will see a complete tear down and a 'we can rebuild him, he will be bigger, better, faster and stronger' kinda thing.... don't waste your time... that ain't gonna happen here.
Like I said, if this gun does what I want it to do, I ain't even gonna clean the dang barrel... :o
What you are about to see here is the performance from a gun right straight out of the box... unless very minor fine tuning is required. That said, from the 2 mags I shot this morning, I don't even feel the need to adjust the trigger. It feels just fine to me.
When it stops doing what I want it to do, I'll decide what steps to take then.... remember.. I'm the guy that sold his Sam Yang Sumatra carbine .25 because it caught a cold (leak). I remember saying that the SY would be buried with me. :-\
No more buying guns and then doubling my investment because 'I can' and never getting my money back out of them.
-
I`ll come along for the ride too, just to see if your experience is the same as mine. I also have a .25 and after a hundred or so rounds am loving it. I adjusted the regulator down to 1900 and backed off the HS to see if I can get more shots from a fill. I also have a bipod to put on it.
-
I was thinking about that Rick.... I'm not a power monger by any stretch. From what I see right now, I will be able to shoot all 4 of my mags at just about the same time the gun falls off the reg. In my mind, that is the perfect scenario.... shoot 4 mags, fill 4 mag and refill the gun.
This will give me the downrange power (50 ish yds) to handle whatever comes along that does not know how to read the 'No Trespassing' signs. (2 legged critters excluded. I have other plans for them 8))
-
I was hoping to get out this afternoon but it`s been very windy and raining off and on so not the best conditions. I want to see how many mags it will take to run through a fill with the new settings.
-
I have various pellet types and weights to test. I hope to find the heaviest, most accurate, most available and cost efficient as possible. I think I can make most adjustment from there with just the hammer spring adjuster.
So, the goal....
Max fill = 3800 - 3900
Reg = 2900
32 shots within 50 yds.
Let the bodies hit the floor !!!
-
Baby steps..
I got home from work, petted Betty Lou on the head and kissed Rambo on the cheek..... no wait... that didn't happen because I asked Betty Lou to help me move my bench back to 35yds. and she did. :-\
I checked the gauge on the gun and it was right where i left it after the 2 mags I shot this morning. I loaded up 2 more mags and shot them off. I looked at the fill gauge and it matched the reg gauge perfectly..... maybe 1 shot off the reg. Really impressed with the groups from 3 different pellets so far but I'll get into that phase a bit later in the thread.
I brought the gun in and connected the Vevor compressor. I didn't time it (this thread ain't about the compressor) but, I estimate it was just under a minute to fill back to 3900 ish psi. The temp on the compressor read 135F.
So, I may just make a minor hammer spring adjustment to make up that one shot off the reg..... or not. This is a brand new gun, it may settle in and go one way or the other.
As for the trigger...
I can always tell when I don't like a trigger. It distracts me from my aim. My mind goes straight to that trigger every shot. That didn't happen... matter of fact, I honestly can't remember how the trigger felt. That tells the story right there... if it ain't broke... well, you know the rest. In my experience.. triggers only get better as time passes.
So far, I can't find a dang thing to complain about. Well maybe except for.... IT's HOT OUT THERE !!
-
It's getting close to decision time....
Do I wipe Linux off my laptop and run install Windows, run a dual boot or buy another laptop just for linking my ProChrono Digital usb software on. It won't run on Linux and Wine didn't work either.
-
Why not load windows on a virtual machine and then you don't have to mess with any of that?

I'm signing on here to hear about the handling, durability, and accuracy. I'm considering one for my next turkey gun.

Betty Lou just told me to go to the pawn shop and pick up a laptop for the job.
Dedicated ProChrono Digital laptop. Sounds good to me.
Wonder if I post a WTB in the classifieds will I get booted off the forum?... lol

Haha, you are a blessed man sir, I envy you.
-
Rule 4 in the classifieds says posts are limited to airguns and airgun related accessories. A laptop dedicated for my chrono should be an accessory, right? ;D
-
The other option might be to look into a used tablet that runs windows like my Samsung, or an Ipad. I have an old Ipad I use with my Caldwell.
-
Yep, gonna run the pawnshops this weekend.
-
Bill I'm still using my F1 a pen and piece of paper 8) I do need a couple more magazines for mine, I did check Buds Gun shop but they don't have anything. I remember when I got my Liberty you recommended them but that was quite some time back. If I remember correctly they were only about $6.50 each.
-
I bought mine at PA because they stated they were specifically for the Aspen and Avenger. I didn't want to take a chance if they were different.
If I'm not mistaken, the others are made by Umarex.
-
Do you know if the Mrod mags will work? I found a couple .25 Mrod mags in a drawer yesterday and I have nothing that uses them.
-
Do you know if the Mrod mags will work? I found a couple .25 Mrod mags in a drawer yesterday and I have nothing that uses them.
I thought I had .25 MRod mags around here but I guess I was mistaken so I can't compare or test them in the Avenger. They do look the same when comparing pictures of them. I thought I read somewhere that the slot was different. I think I read that the new ones would work on the older guns but the older ones don't work on the newer guns. I could be wrong.
Pretty sure one or two of the new Avenger owners have some .25 MRod mags that they could try and report back.
-
Meanwhile.....
I spent a vacation day from work today. There seems to be a small lull in the madness and I figured it may be a good time to take advantage and grab a 3 day weekend. I will do my supervisor job via the telephone today and tomorrow.
Today's plan... pellet testing for accuracy.
I'll print up some targets and load up some mags with various types and weights. The gauge on the gun is sitting exactly at 3900 psi where I left it last night. The reg is still set at 2900.
Testing range will be at 35yds.
Temps are expected to be in the upper 80's today so hopefully I'll be able to spend alot of time outside.
-
Mrod mags will not work in the Avenger, too thick same with gauntlet no go.
-
Watching for results on quieting down some, mine makes a load crack when fired. Don't want to add length but baffles are on the interest list.
-

Yep, I knew I heard something like that somewhere.
-

Sorry Bro, like I said, I don't plan on changing the baffles on mine. Someone else is welcome to jump in with that info.
-
Ok, pellet testing phase one.....
I am on the bipod at 35yds. to target. 3900 psi fill and reg at 2900.
The mag is 8 shots and I loaded 4 and 4 each of the tested pellets..... let me just say this about that...
You'll have to do a little thinking here because you can just load and go when using two different pellets.
The first pellet in and the last three pellets in will need to be the same. This is due to the way the mag cycles. If not, your first shot will be one type pellet and your next 4 shots will be the other type. Then your last 3 shots will be the same as the first. Got it?
So.... the target is pictured below..
Reading from left to right and top to bottom....
H&N Barracuda Hunter 27.47gr
H&N Crow Mags 26.24gr
Hatsan Vortex Strike 24.70gr
Hatsan Vortex Supreme 19.91gr
Beeman Kodiak Match 31.02gr
Seneca Hunting Dome 35.8gr
-
The clear winner of that set is the Hatsan Vortex Strike (top row right).
I fear I'm going to need to clean the barrel.. I noticed quite a bit of smoke coming out from the gunk they ship in these barrels.
I also have some big ole EunJin 44.?? grainers that won't fit in the mags... I'll need to use the SST.
I still have the JSB Kings and some Benjis to try as well.
-
The next best in that set appear to be the Beeman Kodiaks.... that's a sad state of affairs because those are vintage pellets that I can't find anywhere. When that tin is gone, they are gone... :-[
-
The again, those Crow mags...... that's 4 pellets in 2 holes.
-
So far, I don't find this gun extremely pellet picky.
-
This next picture makes me extremely happy... ;D
Any guesses why?
Just to be fair to Wayne's casted wadcutters (far right target), The gun was off the reg on the last shot of the Benjis (center target). Also, this setting is way too fast for wadcutter accuracy IMO.
-
Summary on testing.... so far.....
The JSB Diabolo Kings are just that.... Kings. And to answer the question above.... Price and availability.
I'll want to pull just a touch off the hammer spring to reach my goal of 4 mags before coming off the reg and 3900psi fill.
-
Looks like she's gonna be a shooter! Some nice groups there. 8)
-
Now lets pump her up and go fly hunting..... ;D
-
Looks like she's gonna be a shooter! Some nice groups there. 8)
Yep, and remember.... it's straight out of the box.
-
That makes it even sweeter. 8) Never bought a brand new PCP, but if I did, I'd imagine wanting something like this.
-
Backed the hammer spring off 1/2 turn and stayed right on the reg at 32 (4 full mags) shots. The chrono will have to tell rest of the story.
Betty Lou and I are headed out for some brunch.
-

Kodiak are just re-branded H&N Baracuda,...you can still buy them if you really want them

Weirdness. I just received an unexpected delivery of four tins of top quality .25 caliber pellets from SteveP! I hope he meant to send them to me, cause I was not anticipating anything like this. A very generous guy. The weirdness is I don't own a .25 but I am thinking about an avenger in .25. Hmmm. ???

I used it this morning for the first time.... I like it alot.

Ok, this day has been quite the journey.
Left out to get some breakfast.... that went well. Then we decided to go to Troy and see if we could find a laptop for the chrono.
Stopped at the pawnshop and they had 3. 2 at $175 and one at $400. Then we went to Walmart to see what they had.. The shelves were full of displays but they only had 1 in stock :-\
Back to the pawnshop. One was an HP 15. I offered $140 cash and brought it home. Then the fun started...
My laptop got wipe and reloaded with Linux and went to Betty Lou.
Her laptop got wiped and loaded with Windows 7 Premium and the ProChrono Digital software was installed and configured.
I got the new laptop. It got wiped and Linux Tricia loaded onto it.
All the while I was supervising 10 guys via the phone.
So, tomorrow morning we get to run the Avenger over the chrono and get some numbers on it.
Tonite I'm gonna sit in my recliner and dump a few beers down my neck.
-
That sure was some kinda brunch...avert your eyes younguns.

I'm pretty sure the Baracuda Match are the same exact pellets,at least they are in .22 cal.
Oops i missed the Pirate mentioned the same thing earlier.

Bill how do you like the UTG bipod ?
I used it this morning for the first time.... I like it alot.
Cool thanks Bill , I figured I would wait for you to get it , and test it out first ;D and since you liked it a lot ...I just bought 1 off Amazon ;D ;D ;D ...
another thing ....today I was doing some off hand shooting with the Avenger .25 ,and at 35 to 50 yards shooting just over and inch in diameter metal spinners it was like I couldn't miss....
for me the Avenger is about as well balanced for standing off hand shooting as it gets :o in my past I have done a lot of off hand shooting hunting , and grew up 1 mile from a game refuge on our property /ranch shooting ducks , and geese ,pheasant , quail in Willows California a flat rice farming area loaded with every bird you could hunt in California at that time ,and then some -plus deer fox and yotes ... ;)

I do believe this gun is suitable for all the above.

Finally got some time to get the chrono out but it turned out bitter sweet.
I think I need batteries in my chrono and my lights because I got some crazy numbers.
I shot 4 mags (32 shots) over it but it only recorded 28. It also mis-recorded a few shots as you can see.
I wanted to post it anyways for a base line for what I'm working with.
It's about 1:30 pm and it's too hot to go back out there. I'm going to get out there again in the cooler morning tomorrow.
This string is at 3900psi fill, reg set at 2900 and hammer spring out 1/2 turn from out of box setting.
You can see the last shot came off the reg.
-
My F1 is still working great yet, it's been a long time since I bought that Chrony, they're made in Canada.
-
I've got the ProChrono Digital with the usb link to the laptop. It's been sitting for quite awhile and I didn't change batteries. I use the Harbor Freight 27 led light pods and they have old batteries in them as well. I'll change all batteries and clean the sensors and lenses in the morning before I go at it again.
It's always been a good chrono for me.
-
I may have been shooting too fast for the reg to catch up as well. I'll slow that down as well tomorrow.

yep ... prochrono has worked great for me .. i bought 2 led light strips off ebay zip tied to the light diffusers that i use alligator clips hooked to one of my 12 volt jet ski batteries ,and it works perfect ... ;D
Bill that bipod came in , and just like you said its works great- thanks for your input on that 1 ,
I like the push button adjusters, rubber coated legs , and feet at the end with no springs on the legs ... perfect match for the Avenger so now i have the same exact setup scope, bipod ,Avenger that shooter 721 Rick has , he is one of those guys that can get the full potential out of a gun with the precision/trick shooting that he does ...

Any better results as of yet? Just curious how you were making out with the Avenger. I like mine.

Sorry man...
Going through a major transformation at work and it's taking up most of my attention. Hopefully the waters will be calmer in a month or so. By then the weather should be a little more cooperative as well. So far, I have really enjoyed the Avenger, maybe more than any gun I own or have owned. It's a heck of a lot of gun for the price.
-
Well Hey Y'all.... long time no see.
Still going through the mess at work but I woke up early this morning and had a few minutes to visit with my Avenger.
I've been thinking about how I wanted to set this gun up and I've been watching other members and how they were setting theirs up, particularly Wayne. Thanks Wayne, for so freely sharing your info.
My goal is to get 4 8 round mags (32 shots) from a <> 4k fill.
BTW, I think I found my first issue with this gun.... the fill pressure gauge.
I have a few other PCP guns that have gauges. The gauge on my Vevor compressor matches those guns exactly, however, when the gauge on the compressor read 3500 psi, the gauge on the Avenger reads 4k. For now, I'll go by the gun's gauge and run the compressor to 3500 only. Next time out I'll watch both gauges on the gun. When the gun drops off the regulator, the gauges should match at that setting. That will tell the story.
Tine to head to work.... more in a bit.
-
Ok, now that I'm seated comfortably behind my desk at work enjoying a McMuffin and caramel mocha iced coffee, I'll finish telling of my experience this morning... providing I don't get interrupted with some trivial work related stuff.
I came very close to making a big mistake this morning....
This is my first experience with a regulated gun but, it's not my first time not reading owner's manuals. You see, I'm of the mindset that if you want more water, you turn the faucet on more (clockwise) and vice versa for less (counter clockwise).
My objective was to turn the regulator down to around 2100 psi. So, I shot the gun down well below the 2100 psi pressure on the reg and backed the adjustment screw out almost 1 full turn (gun came to me set at 2900 psi). I then backed the hammer spring out all the way until it stopped, or showed resistance. Then connected the gun to the compressor and began filling.
HOLD UP THERE BUCKAROO, why is that reg gauge pointing upwards of 3900 psi, well into the red? Then it hit me... I'm about as smart as the south end of a north bound duck.
I degased well down below the 2100 psi mark again and turned the reg adjuster back in about 2 full turns. I maybe dumber than dirt but I'm lucky as all git out. I filled the gun back up and BOOYA, the reg stopped right at 2100 and the gun filled to 4k on the gun gauge... 3600psi on the compressor gauge.
At that point, it was time to put all my poop in one sock and head into work.
Our weekend RV/ATV plan has been cancelled due to the flooding courtesy Sally. If I can escape the cracking of the whip by Betty Lou, I should have some time to do some testing this weekend.
Until then, may all your Easter eggs remain infertile. :o
-
Your lucky you didn't ruin the reg , suppose to degass all the way to decrease the reg setting hopefully you got away with it this time , I wonder if parts are available for the avenger yet, my .25 doesn't seem to be as accurate as many of the other owners are experiencing, when I push a pellet through it ,after the 1st inch past the TP it just slides the rest of the way with little resistance, thinking a new barrel might fix it.
-
I had degased well down below 1000psi. I was at least confident that I wasn't forcing the reg. My concern was that I put too much pressure in the reg. and affecting the internals of the valve and beyond. But yes, I think I dodged a bullet.
I noted the pressures on the reg and the fill tube this morning. I'll compare them this afternoon for any change.
-
I got my two magazines that I ordered from RL Airguns today, Now I'll have 4 clips full when I head in the woods with mine 8)
-
Bill .... good to hear no damage so far ...
emty air out of gun,
turn reg adjustment screw clock wise tell it stops ,
then rotate screw counter clock wise 1/4 of a turn ,
fill gun to 4350 psi
to bring up reg pressure ,slowly turn reg adjustment screw counter clock wise while checking the reg pressure gauge till desired pressure is reached ..
Bill I thought i would put this up so people dont adjust the reg wrong way ... its pretty easy to get this backwards , to be honest with you after reading your post I couldnt remember which way I had adjusted the reg since I only did it 1 time after I read the manual , and listen to Ted on you tube ...
-
With an Avenger on order, this is all great info to know guys. Especially Bill’s reg degassing adventure (Yikes)!
-
Pretty Shocking..... pun intended.
I have several tins of the Benjamin dome Jim Shockey pellets that have been around here for quite some time. Nothing really shot them as accurately as other options. I use them for breaking in and testing. Such was the case with the Avenger while adjusting the regulator and hammer spring. They didn't shoot well with the out of box settings on the gun. However, after setting the reg down to 2100 and backing the hammer spring all the way, I just gotta say, WOW!! Pretty impressive accuracy at 35 yds. Just one more thing to like about this gun.
-
Should be a fun day of shooting tomorrow after mowing 10+ acres.... :-\

Bill, I can already hear Air Venturi's new ad campaign, " The Avenger: making fresh use of formerly useless pellets!"
And, do you mow with a riding mower at least? :D

Nope, round nose scissors.,,,, safety first.. :P

Bill I still have a full tin of those pellets I haven't even opened, mainly because back when I bought my Mrod for the first gun I started casting pellets for I came to the conclusion that the Benji & Crosman pellets were too darned hard. I still need to try some slugs through my Avenger yet because if it shoots them accurate I'll do a chrony string with the Avenger with them.

Funtastic ! ... I have 4 tins of those ... Bill how many fps did those shoot ?
-
I didn't get that far with this setting yet Dan. I get back with it today.
-
Had a few spare minutes before work again this morning so I aired the gun up to 4k on the gun's gauge (3600 on the Vevor gauge). Loaded up 4 mags with the Benjamin .25 domes. Stacked those 32 pellets easily within a dime at 35yds. (amazing). Checked the gauge and it hovered right around 3k remaining.
I didn't take the time to set up the chrono... we'll get back to that soon enough.
I did, however, jump on PA,s site and order 4 tins of those Benji pellets and 2 more spare mags.
I still believe the compressor gauge is accurate. I'll need to shoot the gun down until it falls off the reg and compare gauges.
6 mags per fill will suit me just fine ;)
-
Wow ! great results ! on those , I need to test those in my gun when I get some time , my house remodel on the outside is sucking all of my time up trying to get it done ,and beat the rain season , another week or so I should have it done ::) then I am going to shoot like crazy ! ;D ;D
-
Yeah, those are 6.4mm and 27.8g.
-
I still have a long ways to go in testing this gun.
I still need to chrono and stretch it out to 50yds and see what it can really do.
But so far, Avator is a happy boy.... ;D
-
I mentioned above that I placed an order for the Benji pellets and 2 mags with PA this morning. I just received the shipped notice with tracking.....
... way to go PA.

Whoa, that's a lot of shots on one fill for a .25 Avenger Bill. Would you know what your reg was set at, and number of turns on the hammer spring?
-
Got home for lunch and shoveled down a bowl of Marzetti then Grabbed the Avenger and stepped out onto the back deck shooting bench.
As I mentioned earlier, after 4 mags from 4k by the gun's gauge it was hovering on the 3k mark. I ran 3 more mags and both gauges just barely fell off the 2100 mark.
Two things came from this....
1) The fill gauge on the gun matches the reg gauge making the compressor gauge wrong.
2) I get 56 regulated shots at 2100psi with a 4k fill, all hitting within a dime at 35yds.
Next up.... drag that chrono back out.
#hashtag: still ginnin' ;D

27.8 gr 6.4mm Benji domes

Confirmed.... faulty compressor gauge.
I had a spare oil filled gauge from one of those cheap Chinese hand pumps. I swapped it out with the one on the compressor and .. BOOYA !!
It matched up pound for pound with the gauge on the gun. So glad I erred on the side of caution with this one.... at the least, I spared a burst disc on the gun.
On the other hand... I reckon I have been over filling other guns by at least a couple hundred psi. That's gonna affect shot counts reported.
-
Darned gauges!!! I switch around using guns enough where I usually see something isn't right. I have a big gauge on my fill adaptor that has always seemed to be dead on for accuracy and it was a little more pricey than usual but of course that too can fail as well.

That is what I go by a larger fill gauge that has always been dead on ...

I'm tempted to put the scope from my Liberty on my Avenger, it's a much nicer tactical UTG with a 30mm tube.
Right now it's got an old UTG scope on it that I bought at an airgun show for $20.

Wayne..
Here is what I have on mine.... love this scope.

The gauge I have on the compressor now came with a Chinese hand pump. It's a large oil filled gauge that I had on my SCUBA fill whip and has always been spot on.
Tracking says I have 4 tins of Benji pellets and 2 mags due to be delivered today.
Guys, I'm really trying to find the time to get a good Chrono string posted. I apologize for the delays.
-
Bill I've got the 4-16X about like yours on my Liberty. I was thinking about getting another one of the Rex Scopes for it from FDAR like I have on my Sentry 705-9 but he's out of them.
I think rather than robbing the scope from the Liberty to put on the Avenger I'll wait till I get another scope just for it.
-
Wayne.... if you haven't already, check out some of the Discovery scopes from Wes in Canada.
-
Bill I might order one of these tomorrow plus I'll get the free shipping and 25% off with the AGNATION code, I see they're on sale right now and the code might not work but I would still get free shipping.
I haven't had a FFP scope before and it could be interesting, it is a 1 inch tube but that means I could just drop it right into the scope mounts that are already on the gun.

It comes with rings , and I used those on my gun in the pics below ..
I dont think you can beat this one for the money its really worked out great on my .25 Avenger ,and I will buy another for the .22 Avenger I have coming from RL ...

That scope is actually on clearance in a lot of Walmart locations right now for only $25. There's only one Walmart in my area that marked it down and it's no longer in stock. Your mileage may vary, worth checking out at least...

Looks like its been tasted to the max ... another walmart review ...
I have 3 of these. 2 reside on muzzleloaders, and the 3rd on a .308. All maintain zero. Absolute zero. Want to check a rifle for accuracy? Remove whatever optic is mounted on it, and replace with this one. Fire for affect. The first 2 mentioned earlier had been on multiple rifles, including. 458 socom ar, and .308 sr25. for load development. 7 mag and 300 wsm. Zero poi shift. The ultimate is my 10ml2 muzzleloader wich uses rifle powder. 600fps faster than a standard 100 grn charge behind a 300 grn bullet. So imagine the recoil. Offer me any scope out there and this one. I'll grab this one every time. High magnification does limit light transmission, as do they all. Clarity, and edge to edge are sharp. Tracking is spot on. Parallax is spot on. $100 is ridiculously spot on. Their older packaging boasted of recoil testing to .416 rigby...evidently still is. I use Warne rings, and steel bases on all my stuff...just an fyi Don't change a thing Centerpoint, bravo!
-
Here's the last 5 shot group that I did with my avenger at one of my pinup targets. I sure do like these little pinups they're sure handy to carry with me when I'm out in the woods.
I'll probably do a five shot group with my Benjamin Cayden at 50yds today.
I was resting on a big downfall for shooting this group.

I was resting on a down fall, it's the same downfall that I used the last time I was in the deep woods. Today I got a .530 group with my Benjiman Cayden @ 50, it's an amazing group for me.

Crosman wouldn't do the AGNATION promo for that scope cause it was on sale, I'm better off ordering on Ebay if I get one.

Wayne, if it’s the Centerpoint 4-12x44 FFP model for $90 bucks, I got one and am very happy with it. Won’t quite parallax focus down to 10 yards, but any further out is no problem at all.
-
This is the group I got a few min ago. 6 shots at 50yards with the NSA 20.2gr 218. I have the reg at 2800 and the hammer is 4-3/4 turns in. Running between the 850-860fps in .22 I've been running the Discovery scopes and there pretty good for the price.

I anticipate increased usage of my Vevor compressor as my PCP collection grows... especially with this Avenger. I had been cooling my compressor with a 1 gallon Folgers coffee container and the water pump that came with the compressor. Filling guns only brought max temps to the 125f - 135f range.
I decided to up the cooling. I have a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that I had used with the larger twin cylinder MrodAir MKII compressor. It came with a much higher volume water pump. I made the switch this morning. This afternoon, after work, I plan an oil change on the compressor as well.
I also plan to record and report some shot string data.
-
Great diary of your journey with the Avenger. It definitely sounds like a great PCP value!
Thanks for all this testing.

NP Archie... I'm real happy with it so far. Albeit, I don't have a lot of mileage on it yet.... maybe 150 or so rounds. Time will tell.
Like I said, I've turned the reg down to 2100 and the hammer spring all the way out. I have a total of 6 mags now. The ultimate plan is to adjust so I get as close as I can to a 6 mag per 4k fill just before it falls off the reg.
I have yet to even look at the trigger adjustment. From what I've felt, I think all I may want to do is shorten the first stage pull length just a bit.... maybe 1/8 inch or so. It's not really an issue because I can definitely feel the stop before the 'snap'. Nice clean, smooth break of the release. Not even something that distracts my mind from the target and POA. And if it's like any other gun I've ever bought new, it will only get better with usage.
-
Bill,
Let me know how the trigger adjustments turn out. When I received mine it was almost as good as I could get it. I haven't tried to polish anything up yet. It has a bit to much travel in the second stage but still a good trigger. Before I changed my tune for slugs I was using the fx 18gr reg at 1800 and 3ish turns in on the hammer around 850fps and was getting 80 shots before falling of the reg. Thanks for sharing and happy shooting ;D
-
Edward... is your gun .25 or .22?
My trigger, in my opinion, is not any problem at all the way it is but, if I can just take up a bit of that first stage pull length I would consider it close to perfect for my liking. I may dab a bit of moly in there but, I don't feel any drag or grittiness.
I'm more of a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kinda guy.
-
I adjust the pull weight on the trigger lower... it = less movement of the gun , plus I tightened up all the screws ,after that the .25 Avenger that I have went from 1 inch group at 50 yards to tearing a ragged hole out of a dime size circle ... less pull weight equals light smooth trigger for that precision accuracy that have now , the gun is capable ,and as another member on here has stated his .22 is hanging right with his fx impact out 2 =100 yards .. ;) pretty cool for 300 bucks !

So, my chrono is giving me a headache but, I bought the package that was in the classifieds and it should be here next week.
But, I was able to gather enough info to be quite impressed.
I was able to record 3 mags (24) shots before it took a dump. Could be batteries but I got frustrated.
Anyways.... those 24 shots averaged 800 fps with a >< of about 10 fps. With a 27.8gr pellet. That is near 40 fpe.... correct me if I'm wrong.
I went on to shoot 8 full mags from 4k. The reg is set at 2100 psi and I had about 2200 psi left in the gun. The hammer spring is all the way out.
I believe I can set that reg up to 2300 - 2400, turn the hammer in a turn or so and get my 6 full mags with a 4k fill and get better than 40fpe.
The other amazing thing was.... while my main concentration was on the chrono, I can cover all those shots with a nickle at 35yds.
I know, I know.... pics or it didn't happen.... well, you'll just have to wait until tomorrow now won't ya?.... lol
Oh, and to beat all... these Benjis ain't even the gun's favorite pellets. 8)

It's a 22. Don't get me wrong the triggers good just a little to much second stage travel before it breaks. Again 300 bucks, guess I shouldn't complain :D I'm going to be getting one in 177. I'm hoping its will like the NSA 12 or 15gr. Don't know why lately I've been wanting a 177 slug gun???
-
Woke up this morning in a more positive mindset. Let Rambo out and fired up the coffee maker. As my normal Sunday morning ritual, I turned the TV on to watch 'How it's made".
I gathered up the chrono and the Windows OS laptop. I have an AA to 9V adapter for my chrono. It uses 6 AA batteries in place of 1 9V battery. They last much longer and just cost a couple bucks. I loaded the adapter up with 6 new Duracell copper tops and BINGO.... the chrono linked right up to the laptop via usb.
So, after my breakfast of coffee, bp pill and half a pack of smokes while the sun comes up, I'll load up my 6 mags, turn up the reg to 2300 - 2400 psi, turn the hammer spring in one turn and fill the gun to 4k.
First run will be over the chrono. Next I want to run 6 full mags and see how small I can make the single ragged hole at 35yds. That should be fun.
-
Well, there we go...
6 mags on a 4k fill reg set at 2400 - 2500 and HS at 1 full turn in.
I think I'll lower that reg just a tad. That should give better control over those last 4 or 5 shots.
Also, if we eliminate the first 799 shot, the ES and SD will tighten up.
Next up, accuracy over 6 mags.
-
Dang - I have about $900 total into my .25 Synrod that I got for less than $300 when Cabelas had that killer sale way back when. I'm really happy with it but Randy at RL has a shipment of Avengers inbound and I'm going to get both a .22 and a .25 based on the great experiences you guys are having with yours! Now to sell my Regal, Maximus, and Fortitude...
-
We're not completely over the hump yet David. I haven't seen any reports on parts availability yet.... nothing lasts forever... ;)
-
6 mags of 8 Benjamin 27.8 gr domes.
4k fill, reg at 2300psi, hammer 1 turn in ending right at 2300 on fill gauge.
3" targets at 35 yds off the bipod.
1 mag in each target (8 shots)
POA center of red dot.
Stick a fork in this one baby, it's right where I want it.
Well, maybe a couple clicks to the right on the windage... ;)
-
Awesome shooting bud, the Avenger is simply an amazing gun!
-
I couldn't be happier for my $300 Zack.
Next I need to clear a swath through the cane pole patch so I can get out to 50 - 60 yds.
I ordered a telescoping electric chainsaw to reach in there and cut them bu, the order got cancelled and a refund sent to me.
I ain't going in those cane poles blind. I've seen too many scetchy critters going in and out of there.

Can't blame you there...no step on snek.

That is a low area on our property. Water pools when is rains and takes a day or so to soak in. Tree confirmed varieties of venomous snakes right here in the yard..... yeah, I ain't going in there.
-
Looking good Bill !!! I wouldn't go in that can stuff either, probably loaded with cottonmouths.
-
Bill, nice shooting!!! So I decided to revisit my trigger today. Apparently the day I set it up I didn't know the difference between clockwise and counter clockwise ;D ::) I had it at the heaviest pull weight. Much much much better now!!! I blame the beer.... :o
-
Thanks Wayne...
That will do it everytime Edward.
-
I was sampling some of my .25 pellets and found what I think is the best I have on hand.
Those Hatsan Vortex Strike 24.7 domes cut those Benji groups in half.
Looking forward to stretching them out there once I clear a lane.

Bill I guess I must be confused or doing something differently, but your .25 is doing more than my .22 that's set at lower specs!

That's one of my big concerns about the guns too because according the the hearsay there's going to be parts available for them . . . time will tell but still what a deal on a super cool reasonably priced gun 8)
-
I agree, for $300, my .25 is a really good shooter. I modified the barrel band to make it a clamp, and it is working out well.

I just got done casting up a bunch of my 26 grainers for mine, the gun sure is a great shooter with these pellets !!!

With all the negative reports on this gun lately.. even as much as calling it a "Toy Gun".. I thought I would just post an update...
I'm still shooting my Avenger set up just as it was when this thread went silent.... and I'm still loving it.
Let the haters hate..... :P
-
Wish I could buy one of those NOE pellet molds. Or at least buy some more FX 25.4 grain pellets. My Avenger loves them. I tested some 27 grain Crosman's out of curiosity and because I could buy them. The shot pretty poorly. So I shot a couple FX groups just to be sure it wasn't me. Biggest is about 3/8 at 33 yards. Reg is set at 2100 which gives me 880 fps or about 44 ft lbs with these pellets. Seems like enough. 2400 reg only added about 20 fps.
I'm still waiting for the haters to say what they like instead that is similarly reasonable in price and accurate. I don't really expect a serious response.
-
I've had one for 3 days and couldn't agree more. I don't see anything else out there at that price point with better features or performance. The DARs look nice but reading these forums scared me from purchasing one. That being said, I have to exchange mine for another. It has a slow leak, but that could be from any manufacturer. I have never shot a gun as accurate out of the box as this. The adjustability is amazing. It puts my .25 synrod to shame. I love it. Got a chrono today and have the reg at 1200 which is holding now lol. HS all the way out and getting 634 fps with 33.94 grain Jsbs and a ton of shots. They all go in one hole at 30 yards. When the new one gets here I'll tune it for power. I have woodchuck to take care of. I like the gun so much I'll keep exchanging until I get one that works. I've paid alot more for a whole lot less. The wood stocked model certainly doesn't feel toyish to me. I hope the new one shoots as accurate and doesn't slowly lose air.
Matt

Mine leaked at first and I sent it to Air Venturi to repair under warranty and 5 weeks later it came back not leaking.
You might try dry firing a time or two before you let it sit. Seems to help (but also wastes a little air). Mine has held at 4000 for a week but also seemed to leak a little last fill when I did not dry fire it.
-
There are a couple of things I'm waiting to hear from those that have Avengers, are the mags for these holding up better (spring wire) than the mags that came with the Nova Liberty, and do the better mags for the Gauntlet also fit the Avenger? Both of my Liberty mags had to have the spring wire glued into the hole or they would pop loose and not feed correctly, have had Zero issues with the Gauntlet mags feeding properly. If I sell my Discovery to a friend from work I'm still considering one of these for my collection.
Keep your eyes out for A.E. Swede re-opening. Their high capacity (17 shot in .22) magazines are excellent quality, on a par with FX. $27.00 a pop but worth it. Top shelf materials and excellent machining and tolerance control. But you will need high base rings.
-
I don't see the advantage of high capacity mags. I have 6 mags and my gun is tuned to run those 6 before it needs aired back up. I prefer to keep my scope low and as close to the barrel as possible.

It’s just one of those things. You can’t expect to get these features for 349 and there not be QC control issues. Mine still has a reg that creeps a bit. 20 FPS spike but even that shot POI isn’t that different out to 45 yards and the gun does shoot awesome. I’ve been ragging on the gun but it does shoot very accurately. I can go from zero HS and shoot 14.3 at 890 to 3 turns on the HS and be shooting 19 gr pellet 850-860. Pretty darn versatile. Eventually there will be a really good regulator available and this gun will be worth spending the money on that upgrade.
-
I agree QC issues and all its a keeper. I still haven't boxed mine up to send back yet. I will Monday, but I'm having a ton of fun shooting it. It is extremely accurate, and like you said versatile. I can turn the HS all the way out and.its pretty quiet and docile. When I crank it down, it hammers pretty hard. My reg is at 2200 now, so I'm sure I can get some more fpe out of it. I hope the next one is leak free.
-
Congrats .i may have to add the .25 as well. I have the wood stock .22 and it's been perfect so far. No problems like the often mentioned reg creep or any leaking . Very happy with it considering the price. Definitely has made me think about another in .25.
-
Wonder how much weight the wood stock adds?
I will agree with the haters.. that plastic stock they used is kinda chincy.
-
I am glad to see you folks still like your Avengers since I'm about to dip my big toe in the PCP ocean. The $300 offerings are a bit confusing, most every review on YT claims this is the one! So how am I to know unless I read real world (you guys) opinions, experiences and fixes. Thank you all.
I am hoping for a 4th of July sale but not holding my breath. I will put together a list and post it.
-

About a pound. Mine is definitely heavier than my friends, but feels alot nicer than the plastic. Worth it to me, but some might really like the light weight of the plastic. As far as buying a new one, do it. Just hope you get a good one as far as leaking goes. Buy it from somewhere you can exchange it if necessary, and you will be good to go. I haven't read any complaints in the accuracy department.

Already got one... In .25. I was just wondering about the wood stocks.

I read that, I was referring to brew bears comment. Did your gun arrive pressurized? Mine arrived completely empty, and had a slow leak. It seems most people get them pressurized.
-
Mine came with about 1900 psi.

NOE has the bullet molds that Wayne likes in stock. I just checked the website today and ordered one. Now I need all the other stuff so I can cast up some pellets. JSBs and FXs still not in stock. Looking forward to not caring about what is in stock. I want to mess with my hammer spring setting to see if I can tighten groups a little at my new 2100 reg setting but I haven't done it because I'm starting to run low on pellets. Unlimited availability (if I spend a little time) will be nice.
I could not order with their website but I called them and did a phone order, that worked just fine.

Nice, let me us know how they shoot out of your Avenger. I would like to try casting my own slugs and pellets. Just don't know where to start.
-
Overcast and in the high 50s today so I'm set up in the mancave shooting out the south door.
I did a minor rebuild on the Vevor compressor yesterday so I thought I'd give it workout today.
All I had to do to get it running again was to replace the small cone shaped seal at the top of the high side piston.
I also changed the circular disc with the hole in it, cleaned it out and changed oil.
What better way to work it in than to fill the Avenger .25 to 4k several times?
I reckon it was successful since it filled the Avenger from reg setting at 2300psi to 4k in 30 seconds ><.
Temp went to 127* with a large Folgers container for water supply.
But, it's not about the compressor is it?
It's about the Avenger.....

Of the several guns we have, this gun is in the top 3 of my favorites... barring a few with sentimental value.
My choice of scope for this gun is the UTG 3-12x44 AO SWAT Accushot Rifle Scope

This gun shoots the H&N Crow Mags 26.24 and the H&N Hunter 27.47 pellets like they were made for it. It shoots a variety of others good too... not pellet picky at all.
Today I am shooting the Crow Mags.
Lets have a look at some numbers....
6 Mags at 8 shots per mag runs from 4k down to the 2300 reg setting perfectly.
I did notice, as seen in the string, if I slowed down between shots the reg had time to catch up better... not a big deal, maybe just a few second pause.
-
WOW !!! I must be livin' right.
Had exactly enough pellets left in a tin to fill 6 mags.... 48 pellets.
-
It's just too windy to shoot any countable groups today.
I wouldn't do the gun any justice by posting them.
-

I wished I still lived in Jasper, Alabama - living right - Southern Illinois is not the south
( so says a Yankee who once lived in the South )

I never got my cast pellets to work in my Avenger. I even sent my mold back to NOE and they sent a new one and it did not help. Several of us thought maybe the pellet skirts were smaller than the drawing NOE provides. I think they are but I am not convinced that is the issue. I think my barrel just does not like them. It likes nearly anything made by JSB but nothing else I have tried. FX 25.4s seems to shoot the best. It shoots cast NOE pellets about like it shoots H&N FTT or Barracudas or Benjamin domed.
I wish there was a simple way to get a handful of pellets from a mold before buying it. It seems to me like the same risk we face when we buy a tin of pellets but we risk $20 or less for the tin and $100 or more for the mold.
I cannot even find a mold line on most of the pellets I've cast. Their weight is at least as consistent as the pellets I buy. The velocity is good so I think the skirts are sealing the groups are just not so good.
I purchased a 25 caliber P35 and it shoots the NOE pellets a bit better but still not nearly as good as it's favorite - H&N FTT. If I had to shoot cast in this gun I could but groups would be bigger. The cast group in this gun about like the FX 25.4s my Avenger loves.

Yes you really have to take your time between shots when tethering to a HPA bottle while shooting. Most HP air lines are slow fill with tiny orifices that take a bit of time to get pressures equalized.Wonder how much weight the wood stock adds?
I will agree with the haters.. that plastic stock they used is kinda chincy.

Yep, I own 2 Avengers and I like the lighter weight. I'm in full bloom of Geezerhood now and enjoy the Avengers light weight. I also like the light weight and weight foreword balance of the plastic stocked guns when shooting offhand. Something I wind up doing quite a bit when "walking them up" while hunting.
-
I'm probably gonna catch it for this but....
I've never even so much as cleaned the barrel on this gun. I set the reg down to around 2300 and never looked back.
I thought everything was right in the World when I bought an air compressor and became air independent.
No more running down the road to fill tanks. No more testing tanks. No more running out of air in the evenings or on Sunday.
Along came this gun and changed all that again..
Oh, I got all the air a man could want.... 3 compressors and 5 tanks.
That, in itself, created a problem....
Keeping pellets in stock.... :o
This gun absolutely loves H&N Baracuda Hunter 27.47 pellets. Out to 50yds. it's lead on lead.
I have set up to run 6 mags, 48 shots on a single fill of 4k. That comes out to 3 fills on a tin with 6 pellets left over.
With that side lever, the only time I have to take my cheek off the stock is to swap mags. I don't even have to open my left eye or move the crosshairs off target.
You do the math... I can burn 6 mags in well under 5 minutes.... maybe another 5 minutes to connect to the YH compressor, air the gun and be back at the bench. If my gozzindas are right... that's roughly 30 minutes to blow through a tin of pellets.
Heck, the longest part of the whole process is loading pellets in the mags. And after awhile, you get pretty good at that too.
So now the only thing to slow the roll is to walk out and hang some paper.. not so much.
I have a scanner printer and a 4 wheeler. Spit out a target and jump on the 4 wheeler to go hang it.
Best thing I ever did was to put a laptop on my shooting bench and log into the GTA.
At least now I can take the time to read and 2 finger my way through a post like this..... :-\
-
Who knew that correcting typos would save me money?
-
I've have read that parts or customer support are hard to come by. Your thoughts?
-
I have read that parts are available through Pyramyd Air.
I have not had any failures to need any parts.
In my experience, most failures with PCP guns are o-rings. O-rings can be purchased from many locations.

Take a look at CARM magazines. Darco is a great guy and his magazines and single shot loaders are great products. You have my word they will out perform and out last the OEM magazines. Better design, easier loading, far superior springs and very well machined. I have bought multiple CARM's for both my Avengers and my FX Dreamline. They have been my first choice for awhile now and I really like the single loaders, a great deal easier than the drop in trays ( I have large hands and Fat Fingers! ) Very reasonably priced and ordering and shipping go quite smoothly. Give them a look, you won't regret it.
-
Do you know if the Mrod mags will work? I found a couple .25 Mrod mags in a drawer yesterday and I have nothing that uses them.
I believe the Rifle mags will work but the pistol mags will not.
-
MRod .25cal mags are thicker, I don't think they will insert. But they do look identical. And I don't think they make .25cal pistol mags. Only .22cal.
-
I finally found my Avenger post.
Not sure what all I've done to it since my last post so I update where I am now.
First and foremost are the mags..
We have a member here on the GTA with the screen name of Engineer. Troy happens to design and 3D print mags for several airguns and he's expanding his offerings more every day. Look him up if you are looking for hard to find or higher capacity mags. He loves a challenge. ;)
I never did like the factory mags... I guess I got spoiled on the CARM and Maple mags. Just so happens that Troy had already produced 12 round mags for the AV X that function just like CARM and Maple mags so I ordered 4 of them.
It turns out that 4 12 round mags left 3k in my gun and my reg is set to 2100. I like to have enough mags to cover a full fill shot count so I ordered 3 more. Those 3 arrived today.
-
A word of warning...
If you are going to load and shoot 7 12 round mags per fill with the AV Avenger you should probably stock up on pellets or invest in casting your own.. :o
-
Looks like I need to update and post some new chrono numbers. ;)

Welcome Hunter....
Woke up this morning and got some coffee going then a sat down and reread this entire thread. The plan for today is to set up on the North Range outdoor shooting deck. The weather looks like it's going to be near perfect.

First I'll need to break those 3 new mags in. They are a bit tight straight off the 3D printer but a few cycles in and out of the breech loosens them up real nice. Once broken in they fit nice and snug with a positive snap into position and cycle real smooth.
I was a bit confused as to why I got so many shots from a full fill and, after rereading the thread, I realized that I was only filling the gun to 3900 before and this last time I fill it to it's max at 4350 (300 bar). Yeah, that could make a difference.. :o
I also read that I was filling with the Vevor compressor and have since purchased a true Yong Heng that performs better than that older Vevor. Don't get me wrong, the Vevor is still a good back up compressor. I have it in the Castin' Shack and it's handy to fill guns in there as opposed to running back and forth to the shop for refills.

That is a beautiful day Bill.
Cool in the morning, room temperature from 10 to 6, then cool in the evening to do any physical work that goes well with the cool temperature.
If you had this every day then you wouldn't appreciate the perfect day as much.
Don't think about the 85+ and high humidity of the summer, just enjoy what you have today.
I look forward to the data. The famous 40-40 tune squeezed 1600 FPE from an M-Rod tube. I wonder how many FPE's you'll get from your Avenger tube.

Topped the gun off to 300 bar (4350) and loaded up all 7 mags (84 shots) with Hatsan 24.70 gr pellets.
I hit everything on the North Range at 20 - 45 yards with 1/2" or less accuracy and the only adjustments I made during the session was the side focus.
So far I shot 4 of the 12 round mags and the gauge is at 3100 psi. Plenty left to shot the remaining 3 mags. It should drop off the reg at or near the end of the last mag.
I'm gonna grab a bite to eat and then verify that. After that I'll get the chrono set up.
-
Can't get much better than that...
First pic is the remaining fill pressure and the second pic is the reg set.
That's 7 12round mags.
-
I could probably even bump that reg up another 100 psi but I'm not gonna. ;)
-
Dang... now I gotta go back out there, set up the chrono, fill the gun, load 7 mags and crank that side lever 84 more times. :o

Yeah but that dang secret squirrel got me... I just couldn't leave that old laptop alone. I am going to give it one last chance in the Red Shed. Maybe if it sees how close it is to a hammer it will act right.
Chrono work tomorrow. ;)
-
Good luck, my friend.
Electronics make me crazy! :D
-
So what ever happened with the chrony run on the 84 shots?
-
Betty Lou's hunny do list. :o
Seems like we are remodeling the entire bar room.
I'll get back to it soon... sorry.
-
[chuckling] staying tuned...
-
LOL... yep.. she has me doing things like this....
-
I guess she thinks you are an a-door-able handyman [chuckling]
-
I guess you got the handyman part right.
-
Let me just say this.. I have a love/hate relationship with Triggertreat's spreadsheet.
I love it for ease of use and the amount of information it puts at eye level.
I hate it for the same reason.... It shows how bad the tune is on this Avenger. :o
Looks like I got some work to do.
-
That regulator is all over the place.
The only good thing I saw from this string was the accuracy at 35 yds. Anything a quarter size or smaller would have been dead meat... and that was with little to no concentration to hit the same exact spot.
Also, if you do the math, 7x12 is not 82.. it appears my chrono missed a couple shots.
-
The set up this morning...
-
As for the tuning.. I think I might put a bit more hammer spring into it.
I'm not an experienced tuner so if you have suggestions, I'm open to them.
-
After going back through this thread and looking at what I had done as far as adjustments.. I think I need to increase the reg setting back up to around 2300 or more. I think that would level the string out a bit and lower those numbers at the end of the string.
Pretty sure I won't get the full 7 12 shot mags from a fill when it all shakes out.
-

I'm puzzled by the muzzle velocity alternating high-low-high-low so consistently. There has to be an explanation for that. I'd guess you were switching ammo on every other shot -- light-heavy-light-heavy. Hopefully someone has seen this pattern before and knows what to look at first???

I am as puzzled as you... all pellets were from the same tin. I think the regulator was being goofy at the 4360 fill pressure. Here to fore I only filled this gun to 3900 but I wanted to see the results from a full fill. I'm going to try a few things before I call it a bad regulator. Admittedly I'm not as experienced with regs as many here.
-
Far less experienced than you, Bill, but I have had the experience of a 1/8 turn of the hammer making a significant difference in ES but not changing the avg fps much. Not saying that will happen, just that it sometimes does. Might be worth running a mag or two at the high ES pressures and making small hammer adjustments in search of a sweet spot.

Yep, I have a few ideas in mind.
Tomorrow I'm going to start fresh and degas the gun. Then I will follow the manual instructions and turn the reg screw all the way clockwise to close it the open it 1/4 turn (counter clockwise). According to the manual this resets the reg. Next I'll air the gun up to max (300 bar = 4360 psi) and continue counter clockwise until it's set at 2300. I'll run that string and make HS adjustments from there.
-
The velocity jumping around like that on a regulated PCP is usually symptomatic of too little hammer strike. In this case another clue is at the end of the string where we see the wild swings disappear and the velocity begin climbing.
A third factor is just a guess but I'm thinking the Avenger will very likely yield a velocity somewhere in the 800's with a relatively lightweight pellet (25gr) on a 2100psi setpoint. The fact it's down in the high 6's to mid 7's is suspicious.
The solution would be to either increase hammer strike, reduce the regulator setpoint, or some combination of the two. Then find the proper balance by adjusting it to the velocity knee...meaning gradually increase hammer strike until the velocity no longer increases, the back off the hammer strike until the velocity declines to about 97% of that maximum.
For example, let's say you find the max velocity is 890fps. Back it off to 890 * 0.97 = 863fps. When adjusted in this manner, the velocity should be much more consistent.
-
Yup Jason set you right ;) I just did this with my M16 as I saw similar fluctuation I added hammer spring, as Jason described. I then used a vibra tite like substance on the hammer spring adjuster threads, to lock down that setting.
-
Thanks..
So I'll start with giving it more HS today. It's very possible that the HS backed off because I don't remember getting this many shots before.
I'll first need to see what pellets I have enough of to run strings with... I pretty much burned the Benjis yesterday. I should have some weighed cast pellets. If not I'll have to make a run of them.
-
Grabbed a refill on the coffee and I'm in the castin' shack. Got the pot and mold oven on and coming up to temps. I'll get a couple hundred poured and see what I have for weight consistency. I may as well just keep going today to build up a mess of them.
-
First batch in the tumbler. Pot reloaded and coming back up to temp. I'll run another batch of around 100 then cull and weigh.
-
I made an error in that string I posted...
That is an incorrect pellet weight. I listed it out of memory because the weight is not printed on the tin. The actual weight of the Benjamin pellet is (according to what site you trust) 27.8 not 24.7.
I am culling these cast pellets to 27.2 - 27.4.
My cull rate was not very impressive on that first pour. I got about 50% yielding 54 pellets within my tolerance.
That should improve over the next couple runs.
-
Should be enough for a couple runs...
I still have more to tumble and cull.
-
I sneaked out to the shop this morning before Betty Lou was awake enough to define the ToDo list... "dang" the torpedoes. :-\
I put 3k in the gun and watched the reg pressure as I dry fired a few shots. The gauge was sporadic. It would drop way below set pressure the sometimes recover fast and sometimes slow and maybe not even back to set pressure.
I know I was shooting faster than it would sometimes completely recover but I didn't know because I was watching chrono numbers and not gauges.
I saw somewhere about resetting the regulator and the process was to completely degas the gun, adjust the reg to 0 (clockwise) then back it back out 1/4 turn (counter clockwise). Then air the gun to max (300 bar) and adjust reg (counter clockwise) to desired set point. In my case, I set at 2200 psi.
Next I went in one full turn on the hammer spring.
I fired the gun several times and watched the gauge.... it functioned flawlessly. Barely bounced and recovered almost instantly.
-
Enter chrono....
First of all.. let me be completely transparent here...
The original string I posted was with the (reported) 27.8 marketed Benjamin domes. I never weighed them for consistency and I don't have enough let to get a good read on them.
This string is with my cast 250 27 NOE Hunters using wheel weight lead at 700f. I sorted and culled them to 27.20 - 27.40. So you'll notice that I entered 27.30 as an average in the spread sheet below.
-
The first thing you might notice is the shot count..
I went from 82 shots <> until it was well (maybe 4m or 5 shots) off the reg.
This string went 58 shots until I was visually at the reg setpoint of 2200 psi. That's where I stopped.
The ES is 26 at 3.26%. Average 37 FPE <>.
-
Ok... let me point out...
That pellet weight.. remember? 27.20 - 27.40.
How much of that spread can be attributed to that varied weight range?
I culled 50% so I'm not happy tightening up that weight range much farther. I mean, I'd rather be shooting than pouring and weighing 200 pellets to get 100 gooderns, let alone lowering acceptability.
And I certainly don't want to pay today's stupid prices for good .25 pellets to shoot targets with. :o
Oh BTW... I put all 58 of those shots in a 1" hole at 35yds. and I wasn't even focusing on accuracy.
THIS GUN CAN KEEL !!
-
That's the stuff. Resetting the reg woke it up to behave better for sure. ES went from an awful 83 to a reasonable 26. It'll get even better with a bit more hammer spring to flatten the gradual MV rise you've got there.
-

Yep, I figured another half turn or so. That would still give me 4 full 12 round mags.
-
That's the stuff right there. Welcome back, Avenger!
-
Pretty stoked about how well it shoots my cast pellets. That saves a bunch of money.
-
I sneaked back out to the shop... ok, I'm lyin'. Betty Lou saw that my mind was drifting and it had nothing to do with paint so she released me. :-X
I loaded the mags back up and refilled the gun.
I put 1/2 turn more into the HS and went for it.
On this run I got 2 more shots before I felt it was off the reg going by the gauges. But it's a better looking string with a tighter ES.
Accuracy either tightened up or I paid more attention to aim... most likely the latter.
-
I know there are many of you out there who tune for more power because you use your guns for distance or hunting.
I don't do either so I have a different goal.
My first objective is accuracy out to my 45yd max range. My next goal is shot count.
I think if I focus on accuracy I can do 1/2" groups at my max range and I can run 5 12 round mags (56 shots) without coming off the reg. Or I can lower that fill pressure a bit and maybe drop a couple points off the ES. That would also put a little less stress on parts and the compressor.
-
I could also tighten the tolerance on my cast pellet sorting. Or, just get better at pouring lead.. :o
I know Brother Wayne (R.I.P.) perfected his pressure pour technique. I just can't get the hang of it. I can't get the coordination with this fake azz shoulder.
Maybe I should work on that some.. not like I got a job to go to or anything. ;)
-
I might try a 1/8th - 1/4 turn less on the hammer spring and see where that gets you ???
-
I might try a 1/8th - 1/4 turn less on the hammer spring and see where that gets you ???
x2
Also another idea given your priorities, I think on my .25 I tuned it to the low 700s, like 700 to 720 fps, with a lot of shots and lower report by finding a balance point between a light hammer strike and something like 1300 or 1400 reg setting shooting ftts, which were available less expensively (but nothing like your low casting costs, no comparison there).
-
Bill, if you put in 180cc as your reservoir cc and 30cc as your reg cc you will then be able to see your efficiency number. An efficiency under two would be good to see. Around one would be even better. The efficiency formula calculation that takes place in the background is around 130 characters long and takes those numbers and the shot count into consideration to come up with the gun's efficiency. I am guessing at the regulator cc, but I know I am really close at 30cc.
-
Keith..
Is this what you mean?
-
I'll need to get in the casting shack and pour, sort and weigh up some more pellets this morning.
Stay tuned....
-
Dashed out and fired up the shack.. I'll see if I can juke around any plans Betty Lou might have on the chalk board this morning and get some pellets poured.
That's the downside of a high shot count gun... running strings is quite lead thirsty. :-\
-
I run short strings 5 shots or so, just tweaking the ES as it reads out, to fine tune things then a final long one to get the new TTL shot count.

You deserve a beer with all this lead thirst being quenched by your casting labors!

Keith..

Yes, but the pellet weight is not entered correctly to show good numbers all around. The pellet weight should be entered as 27.03.

The pellet weight is actually 27.30. I'll fix that after I eat if it matters.

Bill, I didn't see a decimal, 2703 grains is like .39 pounds, or about 6 ounces per pellet.
I have enjoyed reading about your rifle.
Do you like it better than the Urban?

That's kind of apples to oranges for me..
The Avenger has a ton of features such as regged, side lever, external adjustments and capacity/fill pressure among others that the Urban don't have. But the Urban (mine with the Buccaneer wood stock) is just sexy. Love that gun.
-
Oh yeah.. I see the difference now.
Thanks Keith and Hunter.
-
Think I'll tighten up the tolerance on this pour I make today.. at least for enough for a string. I'll see if I can narrow it down to 27.30 +- .05 instaed of +- .10 <>. At least I can eliminate varied pellet weight from being a factor.
On a typical plinking day that don't matter much because accuracy is there. But I want to make sure I don't have regulator issues.
-
Oh yeah.. I see the difference now.
Thanks Keith and Hunter.
Looking good now. I say another 1/8 turn on the hammer spring to see if it levels out the ES more. I would also shoot past the reg setpoint to see if it puts in a small bell curve after the reg that, if tuned to perfection, shouldn't mess with your ES before the setpoint, up to a point. This would just extend your shot count more is all while keeping the ES the same.
-
Another 1/8 turn in on the HS?
And do you like then 2200 reg set?
-
Bill, thanks for fixing that 2703 grains vs 27.30. I was getting very envious of that 3880 FPE.

LOL... Keith did an incredible job on this spread sheet but for a new guy.. it's alot to take in. I've had to watch his video several times. As a matter of fact.. I put his video on the laptop and followed along on the desktop a few times.
But, if you build a spread sheet for each individual gun and keep them separate it's pretty easy in that much of the data for a gun can be static.
I also thought about making a punch list so I don't miss steps until I make it old hat.
-
On top of that, I'm not a season HPA tuner so I'm learning that as I go as well. Learning the difference between simple things like ES and SD.
Then we got guys on here talking about co efficiency and all kinds of astronomical equations. Heck, I just barely know how to be co efficient with my wife. :o

Bob Sterne gives me a headache.
I saw him post a joke the other day and I was relieved to find out he was human. I almost thought he was a test model for AI technology. :-\

Another 1/8 turn in on the HS?
And do you like then 2200 reg set?
I would suggest adjusting the Hammer Spring (HS) by 1/8th or 1/16th out to see if the Extreme Spread (ES) becomes tighter. Currently, your ES is at 2.86%, which is quite satisfactory for 50 yards. If you were to adjust the regulator, you'd need to retune from scratch. The goal is to achieve optimal valve efficiency with the current regulator setting. If you're not satisfied with the resulting Foot-Pound Energy (FPE) at this setting, then you could adjust the regulator higher or lower for increased or decreased power, respectively, and then retune. The hope is that in doing so, you neither exceed nor fall short of the desired hammer energy for the FPE you're aiming for.
Although I'm not acquainted with your specific model, I'm assuming it operates similarly to my Marauders, which use a standard hammer and hammer spring configuration.

Not really goaling for FPE, just a flatter string with enough to hit 45yd max and 35yd average.
I think the difference from the MRod would be the added adjustability of the throttle on the TP.
-
I'll continue pouring pellets today. Hopefully I can get enough in the 27.30 +- .05 to run a string. I'll decrease hammer by 1/8.
After that I'll have a look and see what my shot count looks like at a 4k fill. If it's close to 4 12 rnd mags (48 shot) I'll be happy. I think that's a reachable goal.
-
I appreciate all the input and help.
-
The odds on achieving that goal are very high. I'd take that bet any day. Thanks for demoing the spreadsheet. It's pretty cool how it calculates efficiency along with everything else.

I appreciate the kind words. I was attempting to fine-tune all of my air guns and maintain records, but there was nothing available that met my needs, so I decided to create my own spreadsheet that could do this. The greatest hurdle was my lack of knowledge about Excel. Overcoming this steep learning curve has been satisfying, and I'm glad I persevered through the challenges and was able to share with likeminded friends.
Moving on to more significant matters, it's quite remarkable that you can achieve 60 shots at 38 FPE with less than a 3% ES on 180cc. I have marauders with a 215cc capacity, and I can't manage to achieve anything close to that.
I did lookup your reservoir CC on Pyramid Air. Maybe you can confirm this by looking at the specs for your specific model. I'm not real sure of which model you have.
-
IMO that spread sheet should have its own important topic post.

Updated Chart....
I made an error; an accurate calculation would require subtracting the plenum cc from the total reservoir cc. Therefore, the correct inputs would be 180 cc for the reservoir and 30 cc for the regulator, amounting to a total of 210 cc. This adjustment accounts for the space occupied by the regulator within the reservoir. Apologies for the oversight; I understand the importance of having precise figures to go by.
-
OK so I should change it back to 180?
-
OK so I should change it back to 180?
Indeed, for accuracy's sake.
Here's how I configured my regulated .25 Marauder hunting tune. The reservoir numbers are divided to sum up the total cc's of the reservoir.

Big difference in start fill pressure.
Yes, I bumped it up a little to equal three mags.
-
Yep... all of this is a benchmark thing. I'm going to typically run the gun at 4k max fill.
-
Upon reviewing my chart, I noticed a minor discrepancy in the record of when I came off the regulator. This happened at the twentieth shot, which was followed by a modest bell curve. Even though the bell curve was diminishing, it was still a bell curve. Since an analog gauge can make it difficult to pinpoint the exact regulator setting, this spreadsheet, along with others, provides a more precise representation of the regulator settings.

My Avenger finally sprung a leak. I tried to order the complete rebuild kit from PA but they are out of stock and no expected eta posted. Matter of fact, I contacted them hoping for some good news but they didn't have an answer.
So I ordered the oring kit from the Captain.
I watched the video from Rick and hoped it is the same issue he had... the tube orings. I took the tubes off and sure enough, the orings were hard and deformed. I tried to match them best I could with what I had but no joy.
I can't confirm these orings are the issue.
The kit is out for delivery this morning and I've cleared my busy agenda to devote my attention to this task... ok, that's kind of a stretch. :-\
But I do plan on replacing every oring in the gun and hold on to hope that it's not the known poppet issue or the regulator. If it is I may have to reach out to other potential resources.. if there are any.
I'll update later.

Hard as in brittle? Surface cracks or did one or more actually break or crumble when removing them? The former is a common aging symptom but the latter is usually due to either heat stress or exposure to an incompatible lubricant.

Hard as real hard and deformed as squished out around the edges.

According to my first post to this thread.. I purchased the gun in 2020.

Just for gits and shiggles I replaced the 2 orings on the breech block end of the tubes. Screwed them back on and filled the gun to 4k with the YH. I couldn't hear any leaking so I let the gun sit for a couple hours. Still sitting right at 4k. I suppose it does help to use the right size orings. ;)
I know I said I was going to replace them all but after the fiasco with forgetting to open the damper on the stove and coming home from the store with a smoke filled shop I took the easy route. At least I have the rest of the kit if another one fails.

That would be a 'WOO HOO' moment!

Yep... I'm pickled tink.

Just for gits and shiggles I replaced the 2 orings on the breech block end of the tubes. Screwed them back on and filled the gun to 4k with the YH. I couldn't hear any leaking so I let the gun sit for a couple hours. Still sitting right at 4k. I suppose it does help to use the right size orings. ;)

Thank you, thank you. I removed the ashes from my fireplace today and put them in a tin pale and placed them temporarily on my shed's wood tabletop with plans to spread them out but got distracted. We got 8.9 inches of snow overnight, so the garden cannot be found, lol. I moved from Nashville to Pensacola and thought I was done with the snow. That's what I get for thinking or not thinking.
I am glad you got the Avenger running again.
-
Thanks Keith.. I had planned to run it through the paces today to test the reseal but that dang stove and the frozen pipes got in the way. Now it will need to wait another couple days while I deal with this stuff and the temps come back up. Then the weekend will most likely be busy helping get ready for Killer's thing at the barn.

I didn't really say that you leaving your damper closed in the shop triggered my brain about my ash pale I left in my shed on wood. All was well. The bottom of the pale was just warm, but you probably figured that out. Yes, the snow is too deep to run around outside to shoot in. Plus, the cold makes for miserable shooting fun. It won't last but another day or two and then we will be back in the 60's. I don't think you are too far from me.

Ah, I got ya.
Yep, only a couple hours north of you here straight up 29. If you and I ever did and dealings it would be an easy meet in the middle and save all that packing and shipping garbage. ;)

I wondered where you had gone. Nashville has been so down since you left. Everybody asking "Where's Keith?" ;D
Nashville's loss is Pensacola's gain.

Betty Lou turned on the green light for buying a new gun.. budget $300 max.
But I've been exploring options and I don't think any of the current offerings would give me anything I don't already have. At least nothing exciting enough to drop $300 on.
Something I have been looking at though is the Buck Rail conversion kit for the AV Venturi.
Ok, y'all heard me say many many times that I'm not a tactical gun kinda guy.. but I gotta admit.. the NOTOS has really brought some change to my sweet tooth.
I can buy this kit and still have money in the kitty. Think I'll let this simmer a bit longer before I pull that trigger. It ain't like it's an invasive upgrade. It can be reversed.

A nice scope or 2’s feasible as well, Mr. B 👍
Promised myself not to buy airguns anymore, just beautify the ones I have, or get more scopes.
If the plating by Mahovsky Metalife goes really well I’ll have the rest of my guns plated one at a time :-*
-
The gun already has a great sf scope on it. No need to upgrade that. And I already have 6 or 7 Big Air 12 rounds mags. I have scopes for all my other guns as well.
-
Welp... the deal is done.. I pulled the trigger.
$153 no tax and free shipping. I went with the black.
I wonder if there is a market for the take off stuff or if I should hang on to it for a perk if I ever decide to sell/trade the gun.

LOL. I don't know about that. Sorry we never hooked up on a squirrel hunt together while there. I lived there some 33 years and had a nice setup with Percy Priest Lake right out my backyard where I could shoot and fish most anytime I wanted. However, mama needed me, and the good Lord told me and my wife to move and go take care of her after my stepdad passed away. She was fine, so to speak when we arrived but soon after was diagnosed with cancer and now is bedridden and living with us. It is challenging but I feel so blessed to be able to take care of her. It's funny how the good Lord works. He knew what was coming.

We can make that happen... let's plan something in the spring.

Keith, taking care of your folks is like giving back. I had the opportunity to spend much quality time with my mother after I retired.
Prayers for your mother.

Prepped the Avenger for the Buck Rail Tactical kit coming Monday. Took the stock, fore arm clams and barrel band off. Those parts will get bagged and boxed and put up on the shelf.
I have that gun tuned for 35 yds and shot count. I might see what I have in slugs and see crank the power up and see what I can get out of it. If I can find something that works in it I may have to see if I can find a mold. My max range is 45yds so it ain't like I'm trying for NUAH.. ;) Right now I have the reg set at 2100 but I don't remember where the hammer spring is.
-
Well snap...
I got the Buck Rail conversion kit for the Avenger today and sat down to put the gun back together.
Wait, something is missing here.. no stock tube. So I went back to the site to see if the tube had to be ordered separately. Nope... it should have come with the butt stock.
So I called and talked to Julie. She looked up the order and instantly took the blame. She said she packed the order and forgot to put the tube in the box. She apologized and said she would send one right out.
Seemed like as soon as I hung up the phone I got email confirmation of the order. So I guess the Avenger build is on hold for a few more days.

Actually Buck Rail is one of the better ones for ship time.

Just jerking your chain a little.
Buck Rail is 'Top Drawer' when it comes to customer service.

LOL... I knew you were.
So I went out in the shop this morning and put the parts on the gun that I did have. I put the pica rail on the MLok fore grip rail for the bipod and front grip handle and got that on the lower tube. I put the AR grips on the frame and got that on. All I need is the stock tube and I can get into retuning the gun.
I originally had the gun set up for shot count but I think I'm going to bump the power up some.. maybe even see if I can do some slug shooting with it.
-
Thought I would fill the gun as all I have left to do is put the stock tube on when it arrives. The gun had been sitting degassed since last I worked on it. I connected it to the Yong Heng and turned on the compressor. Strangely the gauge would not go passed 3k.
I bled it and shut it down. I listed carefully all up and down the gun and I could hear the very faintest of hissing. But I could feel it one the front end of the short tube. I took the tube off and wrestled the front end cap off. At first I couldn't even see an oring... looked like a hard plastic collar.
I got it off with a pocket knife and it only cost me one slice on my index finger. :o A wrap of black electric tape and I was good to go. ;)
I used the chart that came with the oring kit to find and replace the oring and put the gun back together.
The gun aired back up as normal and I could no longer hear the leak anywhere. I checked the gauge with a lighted magnifying glass and let the gun sit for 2 hours. I rechecked it and it was right when I left it.
I should probably change the oring on the long tube as well. I didn't because these little caps are hard to get off.
-
Checked after a couple more hours and the needle is still sitting at 300 bar.. right where I filled it to.
-
2 screw trigger mod.
The grub screw kit arrived today so I did this simple 2 screw upgrade and it is great.
I followed this guy's instructions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-eFt6NdxWw&t=6s
It's so adjustable. You'll be able to set your trigger exactly how you like it.
-
As y'all may or may not already know, I installed the Buck Rail tactical kit on my .25 Avenger. Major transformation.
My next planned upgrade should be a game changer....
I have another long tube coming. I'm going to replace the lower short tube with the longer one. As it stands I get 6 12 shot mags on the reg. Shot count should increase by another 25% which should net me around 90 accurate 35 fpe shots with my cast 27.4 gr pellets.
-
Bill, that's over 3,000 fpe in the reservoir, just how big is it?
M-Rods with 13 cubic inch / 215 cc tank can get 1,600 FPE with the 40-40 tune.
Is that a 420 cc tank?
Hunter

Stats say the stock gun is 180cc with 4351 max psi. and like I said, I get 6 12 round mags (72 shots). I double checked my spreadsheet and I misquoted the FPE, It's actually 32 and change.
The larger 2nd tube will add 25% more capacity so I just added 25% to the shot count. I suppose we'll find out once it set up and running.
Not sure what the regulator capacity is.
Found it... 12cc
-
I found a thread over on the AGN where some folks have been doing this with great results. Some are also eliminating the top tube and replacing the lower tube with a bottle. I don't think I want to go that route but it sure would take the Avenger to another level.
-
You tube, Bill. Keep us posted.
-
Yep, I will.. meantime I'm stocking up on my .25 cast pellets. I dropped another 300 this morning.

Here is a string from November of last year. Once I add the new tube I'll be doing some more fine tuning.
