I use the Royal Purple and think it is a good choice. The best protection for your Yong Heng may be to buy a second Yong Heng at the same ridiculously low price.

Got mine for < 200 from Walmart.com. They come and go in stock. They also offer extended warranties for cheap.

  They are cheap , but why not use the oil that is designed to be ran in these compressors like the Nuvair oil price shipped for a gallon is $91.00 very close to the price of 4 quarts of royal purple  from Oriellys auto parts … about $88.00 …..

So the proper oil, a Real High Pressure OIL designed for the high pressure industry is only 3 bucks more per gal.  Why would anyone not use the proper oil? Baffles me.

  I think you are right ,and been right since the first page on the oil , now that we have seen burning oil in the upper cylinder by a member using the yong heng who just did a tear down using royal purple , it is a no brainer to get the oil that is designed for these compressors ,

and you might as well get the gallon at $91 gallon ….   2 quarts is $68   shipping is $25 with either amount to where I live  so you might as well make it count so around 12 refills in a gallon for the yong heng , and I am dead positive you will not have to change this oil as often as all  the other none high pressure oils , since this Nuvair 751 is designed for 250 hrs run time in the high pressure dive/paintball/pcp compressors ...  https://www.nuvair.com/products/parts-accessories/oil/nuvair-751.html

Well, the recommended oil in the manual is Mobil 827/829or equivalent. Look at the specs for Mobil 827 it says:

"Mobil Rarus 827, 5 gallon pail, is a supreme performance air compressor lubricant primarily intended for the lubrication of severe duty reciprocating air compressors but not recommended for air compressors used in breathing air applications. It is engineered to meet or exceed the stringent requirements of the major compressor manufacturers."

The only one listed for breathing applications is the Shell Corena S4 P 100 which says:

If all that's not confusion enough, the Mobil Rarus 827 is shown to be a VG 100, but the manual clearly states VG46, AW46 (which is a 15 weight, primarily hydraulic fluid).



IMHO, after much reading these things are not made as diving compressors. With a great deal of work and pouring money into multiple stage filtering they may become passable. Out of the box, they are the last thing you'd want to use for breathable air.

Even the recommended oil is not suitable for breathing applications or diving purposes. And the divers oil is not going to remove all the moisture and particulates without multiple stage filtering.

What's the answer? I don't know. But my thinking, and just my thinking, is I prefer to have something that says on the label AW46.

We could say the Chinese oversold this little machine as something its not.

Fair question. But how would one know what oil is "designed to run in these"? When I first got my YH I did a lot of reading like this trying to find the best choice of oil and I remember coming to the conclusion that the owners manual means nothing and should not be trusted any more than most translated Chinese instructions. I seem to recall it recommending No 46 hydraulic fluid or something like that. That is a poor choice for this application and a lot of users found that fluid led to trouble with black smelly gunk and such. Then I looked up the Spec numbers for Mobil XYZ equivalent as listed (I forget the exact number), and that didn't seem like a good choice either. Or at least not any better choice than Royal Purple. That was how I learned about how 100 is actually the correct rating, not 46 btw. I have never used Royal Purple products for anything before, and don't usually believe the hype about these "super oils", but there were a so many posts where people were using it for years in their YH's and very very happy with the results. So... I decided to go with what seemed to be proven to work.

If we can determine if there is a better oil to use I am definitely open to hearing about it for the future. Not sure how we could make this determination though. I think the YH may have some special needs. It really is a rattling bad of cheap parts with no bearing or even a bushing on the crank and depends on some (but not too much) oil splashing for some questionable migration to the upper parts. I think it is hard to spec for a lube like this. Probably the one that helps it not blow up as fast

Breathing air is a different story. I never plan to breathe the air from my Yong Heng.

The things I looked for when picking an oil for my unit were these requirements, Synthetic not petroleum, very high flash point to prevent detonation under compression, a viscosity that would lube well especially on the conrod, but not too thick or thin to where it would travel too much or too little. I also prefer an oil that is nearly clear as its easier to see through the oil window and also tell when it's getting dirty and needs to be changed. I can't tell you it's the best but it's working fine for me since my last teardown.

I had mine apart once to change upper rings and looked fairly clean on the inside. I changed the rings because it wasn’t building pressure like it was when it was new. Turned out I had a leak at my filter so I probably changed the rings for no reason. I will buy more of the chem lube when its time to buy oil again.

LOL !      Ok that is proof of the chemlube being used with good results in the Yong Heng with out detonation or oil burning in the second stage , I noticed doing google searches the Chemlube 751 was being used by a lot of dive compressor guys with great results ,and lets face it Nuvair is not going to put their name on their rebranded bottles of chemlube 751 ,if its not good stuff, and run it in the high pressure compressor machines they sell on their own site rated at 250hrs of run time before it needs to be changed ,

 Now there are other brands of dive compressor oil  out there , but this one has a long history of being ran with great success , and so far is the best price I can find coming from Nuvair …   

I think the key here is the oil holding up with no burn off in the second high pressure stage with our machines .

Tom, If you would, how hot does your compressor run? How long do you run it and how often?
I think most of the problems with these compressors are people trying to get them to do what they aren't designed to do and/or not operating the compressor in accordance with the manual. Sometimes that can be tricky.

Page 9 of the manual says, "Note: if oil level is too high, air valves will easily carbonize, if oil too low it will result in insufficient lubrication and piston cylinder sticking." That's pretty clear. Check the oil level before operating this unit.

But then on page 11 it says, "Note: advise the paintball tank no more than 3 liters 4500PSI 30MPs, fill big tank will cause compressor over time running normal continue run no more than 1 hour."

That really doesn't make a lot of sense. To me it means, never fill a tank larger than 3 liters in one go, fill larger tanks over time, but never run the compressor for more than 1 hour.  I don't know that's what it means, but that my best guess. It still leaves some to wonder, "If I can run this compressor for one hour why can't I fill a larger tank in one go?"

Page 7 tell us: "Best temperature of cool water for working is between 50C and 70C." If a person reads that literally, not knowing anything else about this compressor, it seems to say the best cooling water is between 122F and 158F. That's hotter than most hot water heaters!

So yeah, the manual is not the best. If someone tried to operate this compressor solely on the manual they'd likely burn it up in no time. The best manual we have for this little thingamabob is the experience of others who have found ways to make it last.

If anyone is interested in extending the life of your Yong Heng Compressor I have a video on my YouTube channel as poorly as it is done from an iPhone7 will help you if you can hear through the background noise of the fan running that at the time did not know was causing an issue...my apologies. I have managed to keep the compressor under 100 degrees F for a very long while and even after filling from 0-4350 psi and running for 48 minutes straight never went over 96 degrees. The video shows how and Aaron Cantrells video shows another neat trick with a wet cloth that also helps keep the temp down. Royal Purple Synthetic Compressor Oil is a given and I won’t run mine without it. I fill 3 tanks at least 2Xs a week for over a year and will not do so with out the technics I have learned from others as well as my self. A electric fan, a cooler full of ice and just enough water to cover the pump. Your golden.   OK  I found your video , good info , had to put my ear buds on to make out the sound , … he never went over 103 degrees temp even runnibg it 48 minutes straight , and not only did he keep his Yong Heng cool HIS  beer looks to be  ice cold also ! LOL !  …

This actually has exactly the same flash point as royal purple
