So.....what did you shoot today?

We weren't in any rsh to get up this morning and when we finally made it to the patio it was already warmish.  After finishing my coffee and cookie,  I brought out my peep sighted HW30S  and shot a  few spoons.  Then, we went to the store and now it is hot and humid. 

Maybe tomorrow morning will be better but we're forecast to be in the mid 90's again ext week.   I'm sick of summer!

I got out my venerable tin of Benjamin .22 cal round balls today and ran some through my C362.  I sized them by dropping them into the breech.  If they rolled all the way through the barrel I rejected them.  If they hung up at the leade I shot them off with 8 pumps.  As expected accuracy was abysmal.  2" groups at 30 yards. Approximately 3 balls in 5 rolled through the bore.   Chronographed the average velocity at 637 fps.  I have no idea what these balls weigh.

There is sufficient space in the leade for two round balls so I experimented with double shotting.  I dropped one tight ball into the leade and then a loose one.  I closed the bolt without effort and pumped the gun up 12 times.  POI was a little lower than with one ball but the group size stayed the same.  The double shotted load was hard to chronograph.  In 10 shots I got 2 numbers, 478 fps, 506 fps, and 8 error messages.  But all the balls struck within 1.5" of POA. at 20 yards.

It made me think that this might be a good night time pesting load.

Been a while since I've done any sorts of shooting, but managed to spend some time plinking with a Benjamin 397. With Winchester hollow points and three pumps it's spot on at ten yards. If I remember right, adding a pump for every ten yards after that keeps it on target, but that needs to be verified (and probably written down, lol).

Realizing this, I dug out the guns that started it all for me 5 decades ago... at least the replacements I found.
My Benji 342 and Crosman 160.
Today is supposed to be 70 degrees and sunny. Won't be long until Co2 isn't an option outdoors.

First gun out was my 3-9 Nikon EFR scoped HW50S shooting 7.87 gr. AA Diabolo Express pellets.  After a half dozen or so warm up shots, I put 5 pellets into pretty much the same hole.  This was accomplished at 30 yards.  I think that may qualify for minute of angle?

I put the 50S up after this and broke out my red dot 30S.

Shot the twin .25 Sentry HC Deluxes at the newly set up pellet trap/ backstop just because they were conveniently on the shooting bench in the Red Shed.

Nothing yet today. Yesterday I shot into the box that hangs a soup can with the end facing toward me and angled slightly down. These are plain broth cans that I punch holes in on both ends and then drain the broth out, to keep both ends mostly intact. That serves as a pellet trap in itself, as long as I don’t shoot the punched hole or, later, one of the already-shot holes.

All with Daisy 880, open sights. I started with a couple of shots from 40’ sitting on the ground and moved out to 70’ standing. 70’ is the farthest I’ve shot so far. I was happy that none of those missed. The misses occurred at the beginning of my session—just needed to settle down and get back into the swing of things, I guess. I do like when results improve as I go, instead of the other way around.

Hoping the weather remains OK for a few more hours today, so I can practice more.

This a.m. I shot the C362 some more.  This afternoon when I took the critters for a walk I toted the sawed off Fire.  Flash treed a squirrel in the lone pine in the middle of the pasture.  That is usually a death sentence for said squirrel.  But it's not the season yet and this one was not in the garden so it got a pass.  Well that sure peed Flash off.  He gave me a ration of grief for not dispatching the very obvious nutter.  He's ready for hunting season!

shot my empire xs at some spinners today.  Love this gun.  Have it set up with the lever on the left side - very convenient with the forward cocking lever - nice to be able to load the next round without changing your grip/hold. It is a little gem of a gun for me - solidly built and zero sign of being rushed to market. 

I’ve been using a single shot loader from Carm magazines - this is very well designed and unless I am shooting shot strings or zeroing the gun I prefer this to the magazines.

Anyhoo this is .22 cal wants to shoot at 23 FPE or so but can shoot heavier pellet at closer to 30 with a cliff tune.

I found a stiffer spring to replace the stock spring and cut it a bit shorter so the hammer has a little bit of free flight

Had to outrace the thunderstorms. I managed to get in only 5 shots out of a whopping 10 planned, before the rain started.

From 33’, same gun (880 with open sights), sitting on ground. The 5 shots formed an almost perfect equilateral triangle, sides 1/2” from pellet c-to-c.

The next 5 shots in the second minipie tin will have to wait.

Nice shooting @oldgringo . Have you seen the forecast for next week? In Mason right now. First weekend of bow season. Normal times I’d be at the ranch for that and we’d pull out some PB after to get them ready for next month. But this is the friend’s wife who had injury a month ago so we’re visiting her and giving her husband a little help. Should at least get to shoot the Custom Shop 1300KT we got him tomorrow.

Now there is a bullpup I might be able to get behind. The forward cocking lever does the trick for me.

Very easy to move the lever over. Just a few allen screws. 

I had the same reaction!  Once I saw a post on it, I couldn’t quite get it out of my mind… got it from krale. The shroud/ldc is a really nice assembly.  Machined airstripper/baffle, and threaded to allow ldc to screw on the end of the shroud or on the barrel itself.  it is easy to disassemble and work on. Action felt good to me,  I added a nylon washer in one spot to eliminate a little wiggle. The magazines are the self indexing type but very well designed- not slippery, a detent holds door in place after you wind it up - AEA should copy these… Also has the type of hammer and spring guide that works for ssg.

The safety is meh - very clear engagement but a lot of force to move. Ideally would like to be able to flick it with my trigger finger.  I will take a look at the mechanism one of these days and see if there’s something I can smooth out without much risk of screwing it up.  No parts available in the US.

It is quiet enough that my neighbors are not annoyed, even though they can hear me when I’m shooting. I’m lucky -they all support this kind of stuff wholeheartedly. Has a bit of a pop (annoying indoors) but not like a firecracker. I don’t bother with an ldc.

Three days ago I left the C362 loaded with eight pumps in it.  Something I don't usually do.  I grabbed it a few minutes ago, braced against the back door jam, shot at a 1.5" spinner thirty yards away, and hit it!

I am flat amazed.

Shot a bunch of the old school pumpers today. Now I have the Beeman 1358 sitting on the bipod in the living room. I think I'll dance with the tomorrow.

I forgot how capable this gun is. I'm not normally a pupmaster mainly because of the common location of the cocking levers. I'm not comfortable reaching in my ear to advance to the next round. Some of them even have the mag in that location and, as a long hair, I don't like winding my locks up in a magazine.  Bubble gun is one thing to cut out of my hair, an airgun is whole other monster. 
But the 1358 is the answer to all that nonsense. Yes, there are other forward cocking pups on the market but not for less than $250... at least as far as I know.
If you are in a backyard friendly situation or just prefer mouse fart guns, this ain't the one for you. Yeah, it's shrouded but, that's about it... a shroud. The guts don't do much to quiet it at all.
When I decided to get into casting my own .22 and .25 pellets I declared that I would liquidate any gun I owned that wouldn't shoot my cast pellets. I wanted to cast to save money, not to buy a new mold for each gun I owned. This gun shoots my cast Hunters and Magnums like they were designed for it.
I'm a bench shooter, adding a good scope, a laser and a bipod makes this thing a little monster that I wouldn't want to carry around much. But, it does balance that weight really well when I bring it up to my shoulder.
Power, once a coil or two are clipped and adjustments are made, is plenty to take care of business with anything I shoot within my 25 - 40 yd. range.
As for accuracy, let's just say that if that red dot or crosshairs are on it, it's toast.
