Title: .22 Armada...the journey...
Post by: TerryH on January 06, 2017, 11:55:24 PM
After joining the ranks of the air gun world with a couple of break barrels (NP pistol..yeah I know.. and a NP2 rifle) I decided that the good timing of a nice Christmas bonus from my work was a sign from above to enter the world of PCP's. I do love the AR platform rifles so I ordered up an Armada combo from Air Gun Depot with scope, bipod and Air Venturi G6 pump. I made an initial unboxing and such thread of the packaging, contents and general thoughts. Here's the link to that...

http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=119733.0 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=119733.0)

I have read everything I could find and watched way too many YouTube videos on the Marauder/Armada. I knew that I would want to mod it because, well, I mod everything. I'm fairly mechanical but have no knowledge of guns other than the very, very basics so I'm starting from ground zero and learning as I go. Let me say that GTA is an incredible wealth of information and personalities. I'm involved in a few other forums so not new to forums, just new to GTA.

In a couple of other threads I was asked what I wanted to do with the Armada. I had to contemplate that more that I thought I would. I realized that I really didn't know exactly what I wanted. I soon began to realize that I didn't have one single use. I want to do some target shooting out to 50+ yards. Some varmint control around our property. Mainly coons and possums nosing around my wife's pet chickens. Perhaps some squirrel hunting. Some walking through the woods plinking. Maybe even some range shooting with my powderburning buddies from time to time so what I finally realized that I needed was efficiency and adjustability to suit several different conditions and power levels. We'll see how all of that works out.  ;D

Along the way I found Hill Air Guns. I loved the look and obvious quality of Tim's parts. I emailed Tim and got a very quick response. He walked me through what I would need and I bought his Regulated matched Parts Kit. I also ordered the regulator that Tim recommended for his parts. Link to the kit...

http://hillairgun.com/products/regulated-parts-kit-benjamin-rifle/ (http://hillairgun.com/products/regulated-parts-kit-benjamin-rifle/)

I also bought a Caldwell Premium Chrony and an assortment of pellets along with some other items which I'll post as soon as they arrive. I will begin the journey with a few hundred break in pellets and baseline chrony strings with the different pellets to determine which pellet or pellets this gun likes.  I'm making this thread to document my experiences both good and bad along the way. I know that I'm bound to make mistakes and look stupid probably multiple times along the way and that's ok. Hopefully the thread will be of some value to some newby like me in the future. I'll start the break in process tomorrow. The Hill parts will be here tomorrow as well so I'll post some pics of those parts. For now, here's a pic of the new addiction...

Of course I'm depending on you guys to help me. Thanks to all of you that already have. More to come.....

Hi Ed. Sorry. Should have inked it in the original post. It's a regulator out of Lithuania. Available on Ebay for $69.00 shipped. Tim says he's used them many times before and likes how the work with his parts. Here's the link...

I have seen that regulator in my searches before, but know nothing about them.  I know it may be awhile before you get to try it.  Can't wait to see how it performs and your experience with it.  Everyone always talks about the HUMA.   Glad to hear Tim recommended it.  Subscribed!

I tuned a Galatian with one of those regs, and it looked to be built very well, and worked great fwiw :)

Thanks! Right now tracking says between 1/17 and 1/31.  :o  I'm in no hurry for it. Per Tim's instructions, the last thing that I'm going to do is install/tune the reg.

I have two of those regs in mrods.  Work fine.  :)

Are you using Tim's hogged out gauge block?

Thanks John! Doesn't hurt that they are almost half of the price of a Huma. I have all of Tim's stuff for the Armada.

Had a fun day today with a few challenges. I've never owned or even seen a chronograph in person before so some what of a learning curve with it. Had a hard time getting strings without errors but finally got a little better with it as the afternoon went along. Sent 400 rounds thru the Armada today. That's a lot of pumping!!! Really not too bad though. The G6 performed well. Only took about 5 or 6 shots to get the scope zeroed @ 30. I found the HNFTT 14.66 gr to be ridiculously accurate at 30 yards as long as I paid attention. I realize that accuracy at 30 yards is not much of a challenge for the Marauder/Armada platform. I'll stretch it out next weekend when I have a better assortment of pellets. I also sent a few through the NP2 just for comparison.

Interesting to me how the Armada is tuned from Crosman. The NP2 shoots almost identical numbers. Here's a some strings. Pardon the errors. I think I understand how to get the chrony to function correctly now.  ::)

The NP2....

Here are some strings from the Armada bone stock exactly the way it came from Crosman.

43 shots from 3000psi to 2000psi. Very odd shot #39 @ 596fps?

I decided that I would shoot until I saw the first sub 770fps shot. 50 shots from 3000psi to 1800psi. 3 strange ones here. Shot #36 @ 594. shot #21 @ 594 and shot#16 @ 827.

Also a few goodies in the mail today. The plastic butt stock was not super shoulder friendly so I ordered up a AR15 butt pad. Fits perfectly on the Armada and is much nicer.

Also got a plug for the grip. A little detail but I didn't like the open hole in the bottom of the grip.

UTG side wheel for the scope is cool and functional. The AO was ridiculously stiff on this scope and the bigger wheel really helps. There was some question whether it would fit on the CP scope and the answer to that question is no and yes. The shape of the rubber insert in the side wheel is not exactly the same as the CP scope turret but both pieces are soft so they can be made to like one another if one is determined to do so. lol... The markings do not agree but you can still see the factory marks on the CP turret so no issue there.

Looking good TerryH, once the gun is broken in more it should smooth out for you. Then you may want to dive in to smooth out the hammer travel a bit which will help with your strings.

Thanks Robert!! I plan to do some polishing when I have it apart to install the Hill parts.

I just installed the Hill kit in my .25 Mrod a couple weeks ago. You will be very pleased with it. I'm getting around 47 shots at or near 40fpe with the first 40 at around 1.62 efficiency. :D

Yes, I have the Audruis regulator that came in the kit from hillair. I just looked on his site and the kit isn't showing the reg included anymore and the price is lower.

I see. Tim gave me an Ebay link to that reg. I posted the link a few posts up. Waiting on the slow boat from Lithuania now.  ;D

I'm sure you will be impressed with it. With your rifle being a .22, you should get a ton of good shots out of it! I'm not sure how to post links, if you look on page 9 of the "calling all 25 caliber marauder regulated guns" thread, I have the very first string after installing the kit.

Thanks Shawn. You just copy the link from that page and insert it with the Hyperlink button. It's the second from the left on the row right above the smileys. Just hover your pointer over the icons and they show what they are. Here's the link to that page. I must say, it's an impressive string indeed!!

TerryH,
I recognize those 600 fps shots you have from time to time.  They are double feeds.  You cock the gun, it doesn't fire, so it is cocked again, which puts a second pellet in the bore.  When you fire, you get two pellets shot, at about 600 fps.
I really like a lot of Hill parts as well, but went with the Huma regulator (due to rapid availability).  Let us know how the Audruis regulator from Lithuania works out for you.

Thanks Todd! I final figured it that out last night when I put together my indoor chrony setup and was counting shots. 2 pellets make a distinctively different sound when they hit the trap as well. Am I doing something wrong? Once I realized what was happening I made sure to have full stroke back when cocking but I still had a couple. Should I remove the magazine and cock and then reinstall so there aren't 2 in the chamber or just shoot the 2 and go on?

Will do on the report. I was ready to order the Huma until Tim said he preferred the Audruis. My plan is to install Tim's hammer spring by itself and get some shot strings just to see how much the spring itself changes the tune. I'll install the Hill valve, gauge port. TP, drill the barrel and add the reg after that. Lots of chrony time coming right up. I'll post the strings. Tim has been super helpful. I'm looking forward to the process.

Here's my indoor chrony setup with the rubber mulch trap which is nothing more than a bag of mulch in a cardboard box. Chrony functioned perfectly with the light kit. Rubber mulch trap also worked perfectly so I should be good to go for lots 'o testing.

I've been running shot strings with some heavier pellets and with various adjustments on the still stock Armada. As a total AG newby I must say that it's pretty amazing what turning a few screws will do!! I'll sort through the shot strings and post some if anyone is interested in how a stock rifle shoots heavy pellets. Now onto the mods....

Double feeds are avoidable, but you must pull the bolt back very aggressively with every cycle. When it is pulled back, it should stay back until you manually close it (if you have pulled it back far enough). When you pull the trigger and it does not fire, pull the bolt all the way back until it stays back without pressure, remove the magazine, close the bolt (without the magazine in), fire, pull the bolt all the way back until it stays, insert magazine, continue your normal shooting routine.
A little bit about installing Just the spring.... Tim's parts are meant to work as a whole, lighter 25 gram hammer, short stiff 261/262 hammer spring, and valve with a lighter valve spring.  Using parts one at a time does not fully reveal what they do, as they are meant to work as a whole.  Did you order the valve with the 6 pound spring?

Thanks Todd. I had much better success with last night's shot strings. Definitely important to get the bolt 100% back as far as it will go.

Tim asked me to do some shot strings with just the spring and send to him.

Opening up the metering valve and putting a little hammer spring in it wakes it right up with the heavy pellets. Poor CRV quarter.  ;D Not a tune that I'm going to stick with but on a bad day at the body shop it was kinda nice.

I assume by the long cord across the top of your bench you are using a tablet and the free app, I love mine and can store many shot strings from many rifles with different weight ammo.

One thing I wanted to accomplish when I started with the Armada was to understand how each mod affected the gun on it's own so hopefully I could understand how the entire package functions as a unit. Doing that means lots of pumping and lots of shot strings. 20+ strings in the last couple of days means my G6 pump and I have become quite familiar with each other. :o

Those strings range from a totally out of the box stock tune to where I am now which is the metering screw wide open and the 12.5 Hill spring. I've shot 3 different pellets ranging in weight from 14.66gr to 21.14gr throughout the tests. I've decided to stick with the JSB MDEJH at 18.13gr for now. I think I'm beginning to get my head around some of the physics at play in these guns. Tim has been an incredible help to me in that regard.

Here's where I stopped tonight. Even though the ES is much too high it is at least a 30 shot string with all shots above 30fpe. A 5+ shot improvement over what I could get with the stock spring.

The Hill spring is obviously is too stiff for the stock, heavy hammer. No surprise since it's designed for the light lighter hammer. So the next step is to install the 25g Tim Hill hammer and shoot some more strings. Hopefully that will bring those initial shots down in speed and help even out the string.

Terry if you're still going to use the TSS you won't believe how well it works, I haven't touched my Mrod since I took it out of the box after purchasing it through Crosman for the cyber monday deal except for doing an out of box chrony test on it. I liked Travis's reply for the remedy for installing it with the Armada, I'm thinking about eventually using the thread lock on mine to make it look neater(no exposed locknut) in appearance, plus the fact that the locknut does contact the wood on mine but very little. For my intentions with the .25 I'm going for the JSB 33.95gr and after I do a chrony test with the Benjamin pellets I'll be installing the heavier primary spring in it.   I think them  JSB 18.13's are the best pellet out there for my Disco, Prod and modded 2240, they're super accurate and really get the job done for hunting squirrels as well.

Thanks Wayne! I've been following your posts on the TSS thread. Thanks for posting your strings! I'm going to install all the Hill parts before trying anything else. Even though I love the Armada stock, not being able to adjust the hammer spring with the action in the stock. I have been shooting the action out of the stock and that's working fine in the Hyskore vise. Nice to be able to do whatever without destocking it constantly.

This is great. I also just got my first pcp gun in the first week of December 2016 and I have been nerding out pretty hard, sorting pellets, trying different pellets, making dope charts and looking up info online. My wife keeps making fun of me for it. I should have her read this thread to make me look a little more sane. I wish I had some more money so I could go this crazy. My next purchase is definitely a chronograph so I can get some more data from my gun. Keep up the good work and I'll be following along for sure!

Installed the Hill hammer last night. Per Tim's instructions I removed the stock striker from the stock hammer and installed it in the lightweight hammer as I'm looking for a 30+ fpe tune. Tim's hammer weighs 20g. Substituting the stock striker bring the total weight up to 25g.

Didn't take long to determine that the stiff poppet valve spring in the stock valve does not like the light hammer and spring combo. Have to put way to much spring preload in it to get the fps up. Gun is definitely quieter though. Changing out to the Hill gauge block and Hill valve this afternoon. More shot strings to come. I do love a good experiment.

Tim's hammer as it comes...

Thanks Denis!! I had seen this on the Benji pumps but was clueless how to do it on my G6. I see now. Going to get some parts and give it a try. I have a big compressor for my shop but I think I'll try my HF pancake compressor. Easier to regulate and it's oilless. I've pumped about 3000 pumps this week testing. Great cardio but sheesh...that's a lot of pumping.  :o

Another interesting day in the shop for me as a total air gun newby. Today I installed Tim Hill's tricked out valve and gauge block. More on the install in a minute. Here's a couple pics of those parts vs the stock parts.

Not a whole lot of exterior differences but the poppet spring is only 6.5 lbs. Way softer than the original. You can barely move the original with you finger but it's super easy to unseat the valve in the Hill. A much better match for the lighter spring and hammer.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/273/32196029441_fc22f2fcde_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/R444RT)

This pic of the gauge blocks pretty much speaks for itself as to the difference.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/510/32165898962_150c2ed8f0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/R1oD7S)

Now for the installation. Tim suggests in the instructions to file or Dremel a chamfer on the inside of the gauge block hole in the air reservoir. Let me say that is an absolute necessity. After several unsuccessful tries and 2 rounds with the Dremel and smoothing out the chamfer with 280 grit wet and dry paper, I finally got the O rings past the stupid gauge block hole without nicking them. Live and learn. Follow the instructions. The dude that wrote them probably know what he is doing.  ::)

I'd say that the change was pretty significant. First shot string with the hammer and striker both backed all the way out I got 43 shots over 30 fpe. ES is bad but when I trim the ends off that string to the best 38 shots the ES is 4.90. Obviously still not great but it is coming from an unregulated rifle with the stock TP.

I'll drill the barrel and install Tim's .160 TP when the reg gets here but for now I'm pretty pleased with the progress. I know the reg will even out the string and bring the ES down. Anyway, here's the complete string.

Now for the rest of my day. I did the mods to the G6 pump to use my little pancake compressor as a booster. Took a little doing. Much more of a project than it is for the Benji pump but I think the results were worth it.

The G6 pump pulls air through the handle so the first order of business was to remove the hand grips and and see what's going on inside there.

First thing I see is a little black block of mesh...

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/729/31494230893_ca8c7c9e6a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PZ3aAV)

When I pull out the block of mesh much to my surprise, I see that the handles are full of desiccant beads. Pretty cool idea but they weren't doing a very good job as I was feeling some moisture when I released the bleeder after pumping.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/496/31494232433_c3897df337_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PZ3b4t)

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/451/31494233513_88e06580db_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PZ3bo6)

After removing the beads and mesh filters, I measured the id of the handle tube and determined that it I could drill it to 3/4" and tap it to 1/2"npt. I picked up the necessary fittings from Lowe's and a little desiccant inline filter from Harbor Freight.

Here are the fittings. 1 - 1/2"npt x 1/2"npt male, 1 - 1/2"npt x 1/4" npt reducer and 1 - 1/2"npt pipe plug.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/526/32196005701_0ee41a7200_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/R43WNz)

And the filter and a 90 degree air swivel I also picked up from HF. A 1/4"npt x 1/4"npt male fitting will also be required.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/538/31504765523_936b70ff9e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PZYabt)

Here's the handle tube drilled to 3/4" id. Both ends of the handle have to be drilled and tapped.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/485/32268858046_248e76870e_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Raukgu)

One end of the handle will receive the 1/2"npt plug. In the other half of the handle I reinstalled the mesh plugs and the desiccant beads once both ends were tapped before installing the 1/2" x 1/2" male fitting.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/583/31938579050_348d34ccb5_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QEiyQ3)

Here's the completed plugged end.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/477/32276524216_0538ee5e00_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/RbaC9Q)

And after the hand grip was trimmed to clear and installed.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/714/31938577540_c8acab4e07_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QEiyo1)

And here's the business end with the 1/2" x 1/2" male installed into the tapped handle end and the 1/2" x 1/4" reducer installed.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/484/32195998391_e97b171aa0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/R43UCx)

I added the 90 degree swivel fitting to mount the desiccant filter so it could move freely during the pump stroke. The filter will stay with the pump so I can have the added air drying whether I'm using the booster compressor or not. I added a regular type N foster fitting to connect the compressor.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/621/31938570700_3ed2a8f1c0_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QEiwm5)

I have a 5hp 80 gallon Snap On compressor for my shop needs but I opted to use the little Harbor Freight pancake compressor that we use at the race track. It's oil less and obviously portable. I have the output regulated down to 15-20 psi. for this application.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/756/31938566370_d4ef2f8605_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QEiv4q)

After all of that, the proof is in the pudding so I hooked it up and began pumping. The stock pump took about 100 pumps or so to go from 2000psi to 3000psi. With the booster pump that number is cut in half with only 52 pumps to gain the same 1000psi.

Here is the completed setup in use. I'm quite happy with the results. The pumps do require a bit more effort with the booster but the number of pumps being cut in half way more than balances that out.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/429/31938565090_23a3295faa_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QEiuFm)

Once I started using the boosted pump I discovered that the bolts attaching the handle to the shaft leaked like crazy since the handle is now pressurized. I filed the mating surface flat and cut a couple of slices off a nylon spacer that I had to make 2 nylon washers to form a seal for the bolts to the handle.

Terry-REALLY nice work on the pump and your shot string looks great especially without installing the regulator yet! ;)

Question:Could you please expand/explain the "chamfering" of the air tube a bit for this dummy? Does this mean taken a bit of material off of the inboard side of the gauge hole? I'd have to use a file, no dremel. Kinda scares me. :-\ I plan on getting Tim's kit eventually, gonna do the TSS first.
Thanks!

Thanks Ed!! Yes, basically beveling back the inside of the gauge hole in the air res. The edge is sharp and it is nearly impossible...for me anyway...to get the O ring past that edge without nicking it or outright tearing it in half. I have a pile of O rings in various stages of destroyed that testify to that. Would be easily done with a file. Just need a small, fine round file. You need to transform the 90 degree edge of the hole to more of a 45 degree bevel. I followed up the Dremel with some wet and dry sand paper that I just rolled up and used to smooth out the surface of the chamfer.

Thanks Alain! Only pumped up a couple of times but I think the booster on the pump is going to be very good. Time will tell but so far I like it.

I don't have the same pump but that is an interesting idea. Does the mod make it so you can only use it with  the air compressor or will it still work fun as a stand alone pump?

The pump works fine either way. Plus the added moisture removal of the extra filter.

Thanks much Terry, appreciate it. That's what I thought it meant, just wanted it confirmed. Shouldn't be difficult. I've got a nice set of small files.

Nice work Terry. Glad the booster worked out . I boosted my Hatsan pump with near the same results , but nowhere near as nice of a job as you did.

Thanks Denis!! It's all your fault.  ;D After a few more shot strings I've settled with 20psi to the G6. That seems to be the best compromise between number of pumps and pumping effort. I was pretty impressed that I could go from 1700 to 3000 on 69 pumps.

Few more shot strings from this afternoon. I've decided to hold off with any more testing until I get the regulator. Still no tracking other than it was processed through the facility in Lithuania on 1.7.  ::) I'll open up the TP to .160 when I install the reg. For now it's hard to be disappointed with these strings. Bad ES for the 40 shots but if I trim the ends off, it's not too bad for 30 shots. It certainly has some power now with lots of adjustment to go. Tim's parts really woke it up. I'm excited to see some numbers with the reg and the .160 TP. If we can dial down the ES, I'd say it's going to be pretty good.

Those are some nice looking strings , are you sure you're new at this ? Once you have the Reg in , the tuning is really gonna impress you . Forgot to ask if you got a good barrel or if you found the magic pellet. I use the cheapest pellets I can find for tuning , mostly crosman 14.3 grain from the tin . Don't forget to clean your barrel , especially after shooting a few thousand pellets during testing .

I never even saw a PCP gun in person before 2 weeks ago. :D I'm a researcher by nature. Some days a blessing. Some days a curse. Much of this must be credited to Tim Hill. He's held my hand throughout the process and obviously makes some great parts for these rifles. The basis of the experiment was could a total PCP newbie achieve a well tuned, accurate and high shot count gun with over the counter parts and no original knowledge. The jury is still out but it's looking promising.

Seems that this Armada has a good .22 barrel even though I'm still tempted to get a better HF barrel. It shot very well with the JSB 18.13's that I'm doing most of the testing with. It was worth it to me to test with the pellet that I'm most likely to be shooting. It also seemed to shoot the H&N 21.14's well so that's been the other choice. 1000+ JSB's and 400+ H&N's so far. I didn't want to test and tune with a lighter pellet that I'm unlikely to use since I've apparently become mesmerized by 30fpe.  :o The barrel is due a cleaning before I start tuning with the reg.

If you want to try some cheaper pellets try the AA 16's in 5.52 head size, flat shooting and accurate in my brother's SynRod. You can get them up to 30fpe .

FWIW; You will not see any additional tracking until it hits the states.  There is allot of variance in shipping times.  You have to be patient.  ;)

I'm a patient person...another lie.

I have no choice but to wait...unfortunate truth.  ;D

Thanks Robert! I hope that the bulk of the testing is behind me. I don't plan any more mods except to add the reg and drill the barrel for the TP. Past that, I hope that we'll be down to a little spring adjustment and go to shooting. I've come this far with the JSB's so I'll probably just keep shooting them.

That's cool Terry, in case you did not know the AA's are made by JSB, more or less the same pellet except for JSB using AA's die for their pellets. Some say the AA's are slightly better quality.
You can also get the AA's in 18.grains.

Interesting. I didn't not know that the AA's were made by JSB. They are $2 per tin cheaper.

And as soon as I'm making progress, the foster connector spits out all it's ball bearings and it's junk. New one on the way from Air Venturi but no fun for me right now.  ::)

Well, interestingly enough the nice man at Air Venturi that was helping me told me that the junk quick connectors that they have "had a lot of trouble with" have a ball end fitting to match the particular hose that hey "were" using. Thus the real Foster fitting that they are going to send me now has to have that ball recess turned by hand on a lathe to match said cheapie hose....so.......

Well that kind of info I didn't need since I have an Air Venturi CF tank with their hose and fitting.  ::) If that sucker should let go when I'm filling a gun and it has 4500 psi it wouldn't be pretty! :o

Just make sure that all 6 ball bearings are in the quick connector. I had been having trouble getting it on and off for the past few days. I figured out that the ball bearings were falling out when I saw one hit the floor. There was only 1 left in it. No telling how many times I had filled the gun with less than the required 6. Not a happy camper. I bought the combo from AGD specifically because it had the G6 pump. The pump is great but the cutting of corners on the hose and fittings...not so much. The guy that I talked to at AV had obviously seen this plenty of times before me. He assured me that the real foster would be fine. Also looks like it didn't get shipped today like it was supposed to either. Still just says that a label was created same as yesterday with no tracking.

I bought 2 - 45 minute CF tanks from a member here that are set to deliver tomorrow but they'll have to be hydro certified and waiting on fill rig etc... Looks like I'll be shooting the trusty NP2 for stress relief.  :o

Terry--I will definitely be checking my balls.......... ::) I noticed that 2 of those tanks had sold, now I know to whom. Darn good deal! You'll be in heaven once you start using them. Sure beats all that pumping! Hope you have a place nearby that does 4500 fills. ??? I'm really lucky that I have a scuba shop 25 minutes away that does 4500 very reasonably and they're great people. Just hope they never close!

One should always know the number and the whereabouts of one's balls.  ;D

I actually got the 2 tanks for $200 all in to my door. Set to be delivered tomorrow. Local fire extinguisher place does the hydro's for $28. Paint ball guy in my town will fill to 4500psi for $12.

Those are some nice clean looking tanks.  You will be much happier using them once you get them going.  I would go with the Stikman fill assy. with having two tanks to work with.

I have been following along while out hunting and took a look at your last JSB string.  That string is pushing the JSBs hard for sure at 33.86 FPE.  Once you are able to control the peak with the reg., you should see the ES tighten up more.  With the ports opened up so much you can expect a higher ES without a reg. or other means to control the peak.  You did get 25 shots from a 2850 fill that gave you a 3.7% ES at 34.75 FPE average.

Terry-Glad you received the tanks ok, doesn't look like they were packed all that well. ??? What are you gonna use for your "fill rig"? I've been thinking about buying the one left and he sent me a youtube link showing how an adapter he made can be used with a scuba fill station which I have. Don't know if I'd trust that or not but it seemed to work fine in the video. I know an adapter/hose from JoeB for a SCBA is $150+. I'm going to call my scuba shop & see what a hydro would cost. Maybe by then it'll be sold & I can quit considering it.......

I've been studying the Skikman and JoeB's stuff. Not 100% sure what I'm going to do yet. Makes sense to be able to cascade the tanks since I have 2. Sending them off for hydro and go from there.

I'm anxious to get the reg and open up the TP. I feel like once the ES get's in check that it should produce some really nice strings. I'm enjoying working on it but ready to get to shooting it any time now!

FedEx was kind to them between Cali and here.  :D  I have that adapter but I think I'll buy one of the premade fill systems anyway. I ordered a hand tight fitting and male foster so I can get them filled at the local paint ball place.

The Stikman, although a little pricey, should pay for itself over time.  It is really easy to remove and install by hand. and can be adjusted easily for different viewing angles.  You can fill using the tank with less pressure and then top off with the higher pressure tank.  This will limit the number of trips to get a refill which saves gas, time and money.  Don't fall for the slow fill DIN valve.  The valve on the Scott tank is very easy to control the fill pressure safely.

I watched the vid on the Air Tanks Plus web page. The whole reason I bought 2 tanks was to be able to cascade fill with them to save trips to the paintball store. I'll probably just get the Stikman and call it good. I bought a hand tight adapter and a male foster from Air Tanks Plus already so I can get them filled.

You will still need another connection or fill assembly with a bleed off valve for the second tank if you want to cascade them.  I would just call Joe B. for those parts.

They sell the Stikman with the cascade setup as a unit for $249. I like JoeB's stuff too. Really just about a toss up as far as I'm concerned. I'm waiting on the air gun fund to be refilled before I do anything one way or the other.

Well, if you had bought the cascade system at my cyber Monday discount price for one Stikman, your second Stikman would be costing you only $83.  That's a pretty good deal when looking at it from that angle.

Hey Shawn. I bought mine on Jan. 2. On Jan. 5 it says it was accepted at the PO in Lithuania. It was processed through that PO on Jan. 7. Jan. 18 I got the notice that it processed through the PO in Chicago. No update since then. I assume it's somewhere between Chicago and here. It is a slow boat/plane/mule/snowmobile/bicycle/rickshaw/whatever but Tim says that it'll be worth it.  ;D

OK, I did some more digging and it arrived at office of exchange for USA(where ever that is) yesterday. I have one that came in the first kit I got from Tim and it's pretty sweet. I guess I'm impatiently waiting for that and a part from Travis(oldpro) to tune this gun. You know how it is right? ;)

Oh, trust me. I know exactly how it is.  :o I've been digging around assembling pieces for the tanks. Handles, mesh protective things, tank boots, tank feet, you know all the required stuff. Once I finally get everything I want located from about 5 different places I figure out that R and L Airguns has a complete kit consisting of the exact things I spend 4 days researching for the same price as I just spent. At least I get the pleasure of getting more packages from more places.  ;D

I wanted to give a shout out to Roger at Air Tanks Plus. I ordered a SCBA hand tite adapter and male foster this week so I could have my tanks filled at the local paint ball place. Price was good. I was quite surprised when I got a note from Roger saying that the actual shipping was $2.75 less than their standard rate that I paid and that he had refunded the $2.75 to my PayPal account. Don't see much integrity like this in today's world. Thanks to Roger and to Air Tanks Plus!! I will be getting a Stikman filling station with cascade from you as soon as I can.

Just for grins while I'm stuck waiting on the reg I decided that I'd shoot a string with some JSB 25.39's. Pretty cool to see the .22 cal touch 40fpe on a couple of shots.

+1! Re. Air Tanks Plus! That's the kind of thing that creates loyal customers and builds your business by word of mouth (keyboard?). A LOT of online depend on shipping overcharges to boost their bottom line. Happy to see ATP isn't one of 'em.

Hi Ed. I have the Tim Hill valve, gauge port, hammer and hammer spring in it so far. Still the stock TP for now. There is more power available right now as I only had one turn on the hammer spring.

I have Tim's .160 TP so I'll be opening up the barrel and adding that once the regulator gets here.

22 shots over 40fpe from an unregulated .22 cal with stock transfer port. I'm not disappointed with that.

And back to shooting the pellet that I'm likely to be using....

Tim sent me a .113 transfer port that he has specifically for an unregulated gun. Produced a pretty decent 40 shot string. Starting at 3000psi and ending at 1950psi.

Thanks Ed! Gotta tighten up the ES. All of this really doesn't mean much it's not consistently accurate. The smaller TP definitely helped it and I could reduced the fill level and the shot count and get some pretty good spreads for sure. I feel like the reg will do that and opening up the TP with the reg should make it more efficient. We will see once the s l o w boat from Lithuania gets here.  ;D

Thought I'd show you guys how all of this is going down. The Hyskore vise enables me to easily and safely shoot it without taking it in and out of the stock. Makes all of this tuning so much easier. I'm also amazed by the bag of shredded rubber mulch in the cardboard box. It's stopped 1500+ pellets from 5 feet including those 40+fpe shots.

Rubber mulch pellet traps work great and are quiet to boot.  I made one that is 13x13x11 inches to hold 12" targets, and it stops my .22 shooting at 60fpe just fine.  It has even stopped some slugs from a .357 Slayer too :)  I originally made it to shoot targets on to be quiet vs the metal traps, but it stops stuff better than I would have expected, so that is an added benefit.  I did all my high power(50-60fpe) tuning for my .22 with the trap indoors about 4ft from the gun, and I've never had so much as a dent in the wood in the back the trap.  I've collected about 15 or 16 pounds of pellets out of mine so far, haha.

Hey Donny. I was/am dumbfounded over how well it works. I'm eventually going to build a nice box so I can ditch the cardboard box. I literally just threw the bag in the box and started shooting. lol...

That's a beautiful garage!! And you keep it clean I'd have projects everywhere lol can't wait til you get the reg real interested to see how it all turns out

Thanks Dillon! The whole clean shop deal is a disease. I like a place for everything and everything in it's place. Problem is when I have multiple projects going it gets where you can't walk thru it and every horizontal surface has something piled on it. lol...

So considering how poor the finish is on the shroud and air reservoir, I've been thinking about doing this and I was bored tonight so....

Added a touch on the scope just because...

I like the sounds of that pellet trap. Or the lack there of. I went and bought some rubber mulch today and hopefully the weather clears up here for tomorrow so I can build I little trap to put it in. Unfortunately my shop is outside with a couple lead cords. By the way the gun is coming along nice. It looks good and the stings look sweet.

Thanks Ed! I love the look of the stock Armada but of course can't ever leave well enough alone. If it's not pleasing to my eye then I have no interest in it. Function is absolutely necessary as well but pleasing form is also a requirement.

Getting my fill station together...sort of. I need a 1/4"npt cross to enable me to cascade my 2 tanks but had to order it. I went ahead and got a 1/4"npt wye for now so at least I can use 1 tank. Tanks are supposed to be back from hydro on Monday.

Parts list for the main station..

SCBA hand tite adapter and inline bleeder from airtanksplus.com. $58 plus $8.50 shipping.
Glycerin filled 5k gauge and fittings from my local Parker store.  $41.51 with tax.
Ninja microbore hose assy. $44.95 on Amazon Prime.

$152.96 total.

2nd tank station...

I'm using the SCBA hand tite that come with my tanks so $0 for that.
Ninja microbore hose assy. with an additional quick disconnect so the hose is removeable from both the tank and the main fill station.  $44.95 + $11.95.
Local fitting. $4.68

$61.58 total.

I'll replace the wye with the cross when it comes to complete the cascade fill station. Total cost: $224.54.

If you add a second hand tite from ATP it would bring the total to right about $260.00.

Bottom line is that I saved a few bucks by putting it together myself. Worth it? It was to me. I got a couple of features that I wanted that weren't available on the commercially available systems.

The Stickman with cascade is $249 plus shipping ($15.00?) but doesn't have a glycerin filled gauge. I did like that the hose for the 2nd tank is separate from the main station.

JoeB's cascade station is $273.50 with shipping. Has a nice gauge but the 2nd hose is attached to the main so would have to buy quick disconnects etc...

Bottom line is if you like one of the commercially available systems you might as well just buy one and skip the head scratching and the shopping.

Main station with the wye instead of the cross that's on order.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/493/32425185792_fa6fffc31f_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Rpiy4s)

This was my idea for the 2nd tank. It's just the hand tite with a 14/" x 1/8" bushing with one of the male fosters from the Ninja microbore hoses. Should be super simple to fill the tanks with this setup.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/718/31766806293_bc0f2c50ba_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Qp8bLM)

The cascade line will plug onto a quick disconnect thusly when I eventually get the cross. Should made the station much less bulky when just using one tank.

Once you go to the cross and add the female QD, get a dead head so you don't have to have the cascade line hooked up.  Dead heads are good for testing for leaks, as well.   Maybe you already have one.

Hi john. I totally forgot about that. I have a dead head to plug the QC that I got from Air Tanks Plus that has a lanyard on it so maybe I won't lose it.

I'll blame it on the Tramadol. I cut 2 fingers pretty badly at work and I'm under the influence.  ;D

And today was the day that all these shot strings just got easier.  ;D Tanks came back from hydro and the last pieces for my cascade fill station also came in. I'll be at the paintball store on Saturday morning getting them filled and them lots 'o shootin' to follow. Little secret also. I bought a used Prod that's being delivered tomorrow. I know, I know. I got it bad.

Nice to get these tank goodies out of the box and on the tanks. I bought some boots but they are WAY too big for these tanks so I'm stumped on the right boots. Any help or links greatly appreciated.

1/4" cross also came so home brew fill station is complete.

(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/345/31826544903_460d325724_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QupmYP)

And the completed system...

I'm super happy with how this all turned out. Especially since everything was less than $600 all in.

Got my cylinders filled today. Oh. My. Gosh. What a pleasure it is to just turn the knob and watch it go right up to 3000psi!!! Obviously I had to shoot the Amada even though it was cold and windy. 38 degrees with 15mph wind. I was shooting in my hoodie and gloves off the bipod. Chair Gun's recommended optimum distance is 41 yards so I setup at that distance. I zeroed the scope and shot some groups. Even though lots have had issues with these .22 barrels, I'm quite pleased with mine. The Armada loves the JSB 18.13's. I shot the H&N 21.14's as well but those groups were not as good as these with the JSB's. This is the tune that gave me 44 shots over 30fpe. As a total PCP newbie I have a hard time not being happy with these groups.

I've also had the RAW trigger for a couple of weeks but hadn't got it installed. It's a drop in replacement once the pivot hole is resized to match the pin in the Armada trigger group. The shape and reach is much more comfortable especially with the Royal Arms target grip. I defused the lawyer spring while I was in there.

The regulator finally made a reappearance in Chicago after 18 days with no new tracking information. Beats me but apparently it's on the way here now. Once I have it in my hand then I'll drill the barrel, add the .160 TP along with a couple of other goodies that I have.

More to come....

You still haven't got your regulator?! I ordered mine like week and a half after you and got almost two weeks ago! First tune on my .25 at 800ish fps from 3000 to 1350 psi was 64 shots. ES 25, SD 5. Talked to Tim and he gave me some tips to try to get better results.
Good luck with yours.

Hi Shawn. The reg is still not here.  ::) I thought for sure that it was lost forever but miraculously after 18 days with no update after it got to Chicago it showed up in Chicago again. Beats me. Now the tracking says that it departed the Chicago PO yesterday and it's in transit. I had already contacted the seller and he told me that sometimes they get stuck in Chicago for whatever reason. Been over a month now. Will be nice to finally get it in the gun!!!

All international mail has to come in through an ISC.  It is there that it might be checked for customs.  It would usually go next to a neighboring sorting center, where it would be sent to the destinating sorting facility near you.   I can't tell you why it is hopping around Chicago, but international mail in general, the barcodes and labeling cause more issues for the scanners and recognition s/w, than domestic mail.

Not a fan of the USPS at this moment. There's still not even a projected delivery date.  ::)

Your package on the other hand, says that it'll be here Thursday.  ;D Thanks again!!

Terry in the past couple of years there has been packages delivered to my house by mistake a couple times, I ended up know the people the one package went to and brought it to them and the other I had to run down the mailman one day and give it to him.  Some reason in the past several years USPS has really gotten terrible, and I even see them working on Sundays now, if that ain't bass ackwards I don't know what is.

Lol... yup. Perhaps next time I'll have it shipped to Shawn and then he can ship it to me. I find it difficult to believe that it could possibly be any slower.

Agree Wayne. There is a business in the town next to me that has a very similar address as our house. I constantly get their mail. I make it and put it back in the box yet I have never once gotten a piece of mail that they received in error. I talked to the PO and they told me that it is all sorted at the same place. Fairly often we all have to trade each others mail on our street because it was in someone else's box. Go figure. Think the entire Sunday deal is all about the Amazon contract. Order on Friday night and get it on Sunday.  :o

I think the Audrius guys march to a little different beat on their regulators. I plan on installing it tomorrow so we will see.

Offhand, it looks nearly the same as the two Audrious regs I have/had.   I recently sold one.  Here is a pic:

Terry, did you do a lot of research on regulators before selecting yours?  I know you said the Audrious is what Tim Hill recommended, but I am curious if that was the only reason for your reg selection.  Did you have to drill a vent hole with this model?  If I did go the regulated route, I am not sure which regulator brand would be the best choice for my .22.  I'm thinking the HUMA with the .25 cal plenum might be a good choice, but I really have no clue in regards to longevity or maintenance and ease of use.  Maybe one is less likely to creep than others or have less parts to fail idk.

I bought it solely on Tim's recommendation. Did't hurt that is was much cheaper than any of the others. It vents through the gauge hole. You remove the gauge block O ring closest to the muzzle.

Keith,

FWIW: The audrious with an open gauge block has a larger plenum than the 25 cal Huma.  It is probably larger than needed in a 22 cal.   That is not impacting Terry much, because he is using Hill valve and other parts, his set-point on the reg is quite low, and still getting the 30FPE.

The huma cost a little more, but is less if you consider not have to buy an open gauge block.  You can also DIY a gauge block, though.  The huma shipping time is slightly less than audrious, I mean the "normal" shipping time, not the special one that Terry got.  :D

I think the Audrius is still cheaper even with the gauge block but not by a lot. If I decide to reg the .25 I'll likely buy another one. Hopefully I won't get the special shipping next time.

Took time yesterday to disassemble the Armada and continue the mods. I drilled the barrel to .161 and installed the Hill .161 transfer port. The Hill valve already has a .161 exhaust port. I also modded the air stripper and installed the Auduris reg. I left it set at 120 bar (1740psi) even though my initial thought was that would be too low. Much to my surprise it was the exact opposite. Ended up turning it down to 1350psi. Here is that string. Still more tuning coming up but a pretty good start. This is with the WAR TSS with both springs zeroed. 45 shots with a spread of 17 and ES of 1.93. I'm amazed that it will make this much power with the reg set at 1350psi and zero preload on the hammer.

Great string!  That is why opening everything up is beneficial even if you aren't trying to make big power.  It allows you to run a lower reg set point :)

Yes sir!! I'm going to tune a bit more tonight. After I experiment with some more spring combo's I might even turn the reg lower just to see how far the string can go.

Just keep in mind that a reg set point that is too low may make the velocity you want, but it can also waste air.  That is because the pressure leaning on the valve helping to close it is less, so the valve will stay open longer and waste air.  I'd even be willing to be that you will be able to raise your regulator set point 10-20 bar and get more shots.

Changes tonight were to remove the factory striker from the Hill light weight hammer and reinstall the flush striker that came with it. Result is a flat faced hammer that weighs 20g. Installed the stock hammer spring along with the long inner spring in the TSS. No preload. Free flight as per Travis's video.

ES is a little higher than I had hoped for @ 2.28 but hard to be disappointed with 63 shots @ 30fpe on a 3000 psi fill.

Thanks Ed! Pf is power factor. Another way to measure the moment/velocity of a projectile.

Thank you, Donnie! I think that is probably as good as I can tune it. I shot another tin of pellets trying different springs and very minute adjustments to the primary but could not improve on it. I just have less air and pellets now.  ;D

Do we hear 70?  :D   Nice work Terry.

Thank you, John. Couldn't imagine 70 but I couldn't imagine 60 before last night either.  :o Apparently I stumbled onto the perfect reg setting. I still can't get my head around the physics of how all of this is possible at 1350psi. I've triple checked the gun gauge vs the fill station gauge and it truly is 1350psi. At higher pressures the gauge on the gun does not match the 5000psi Noshok glycerin filled gauge on the fill station that I trust much more. 3000psi on the fill station equaled 3200psi on the gun gauge before I installed the reg but both gauges match perfectly at the lower pressure.

One thing I did that made a big difference and allowed those last few shots was to really take my time filling the gun. When I started filling with the SCBA cylinders I noticed that even if I filled very slowly the gun would loose about 200psi or more when I let it set for a few minutes. I could then top it off and wait again. Might take a couple of times for it to stay put at 3000psi. Doubt most people actually have the fill pressure that they think they do unless they are doing the same.

Thank you, Wayne! Yes it is a long way from where I started. What a learning experience this has been! 100% of this can be attributed to GTA and Marauder forum posts and the advice of Tim Hill and others here.

The reg-master Scott (motorhead) has a thread here on GTA where he reg'ed a 22 Mrod.  He got 50 shots at 30FPE, but that was the days before SSG and TSS.  His set-point was around 1800psi.   Again, good work.

Thanks John! Some days dogged determination is a blessing, some days a curse.  ;D  :o

I feel like those extra shots are attributed mostly to the TSS. I'm not done experimenting with single springs just yet but I'd be very surprised if there was improvement over the current performance level.

1800psi seems much more reasonable as a set point and was right about where the reg was set initially but was obviously way too hot for how my gun is set up.

I don't see where you posted the ending pressure after the strings.  I am thinking the 63 shot string maybe using more than 1000 psi.  However, I have been able to do a number of 60 shot strings unregulated with a 1000 psi, but not at 2% ES.  With the regulator you can fill a little higher and still be somewhat safe.

Ending pressure was 1300. Guessing there was only 1or 2 shots off the reg. In further testing I see that the fps drops off virtually immediately once the gun gets off the reg.

Also, using the Airgun Calculator it works out to 1.42 efficiency. 27psi per shot using 190cc for the air res.

I think you can get more out of it Terry. I'm still tweaking my .25 Mrod, but I have gotten 64 shots at 36 FPE from 3000 down to 1350 psi. ES was 20, SD 5, Reg set at 1900. I am still playing with reg setting.

I will agree with that.  1700psi for 63 shots works out to 26.98 psi per shot.  Unregulated, I get anywhere from 18 to 23 psi per shot typically.

I edited my post a few back after I ran the numbers in the AG calculator. 1.42 efficiency. 27psi per shot using 190cc for the air res is what I got. I'm clueless on what else to change. Tim is sending me lighter hammer springs to try but I don't really think that those are going to make much of a difference. The gun is very quiet. I don't hear any bounce but of course that doesn't necessarily mean that it's not there. I can't imagine that I need to turn the reg lower but maybe I do?? The fps drops like a rock as soon as it comes off the reg. Really want to maintain 30fpe. All of this is new to me so..... As always, suggestions are more than welcome.

63 shots at 30 FPE is awesome regardless of air used.  I'm thinking there is an error in the PSI readings.  You probably used less air than indicated.

Wish it was, Keith but I'm pretty confident in the numbers. I good with more experimenting. Need to order more pellets and get the tanks filled. 60+ shot strings are hard on consumables.  :o The thing that I don't know is if it makes sense to leave the reg alone or make a change one way or the other.

That's my thought as well. Donnie. I can immediately tell the first shot off the reg because the fps falls significantly. I know that is not always the case so I diligently checked the gauge and sure enough. I feel like the reg is in the perfect place so if there is improvement to be made it just about has to be in the springs/spring adjustments unless there is something I am totally missing. I'm trying to read and learn as much as I can.

I would agree with Donny.  Your getting that many shots at 30 FPE at or very near 2% ES...The best string many here have seen.  The important part is the accuracy at the set speed.  If the pellets stack up at say 25 to 30 yards you have everything one could hope for in .22 cal.  My stock barrel was picky with pellets and speed and I had better luck in the 850 fps range.  You just have to play around with the most accurate pellet found and see if it gets better or worse or no change to really know how accurate it can get.

I found if I stuck with the same pellet I had better accuracy overall as the lead built up to match that one pellet type.  I avoided heavy barrel cleanings and just used a bore snake with the brass bristles removed.  That keep the barrel clean but not too clean.

Back on page 8 are some groups that were shot at these same velocities or a bit higher using the JSB 18.13's. Multiple dime size groups @ 41 yards when the ES was more like 5. I feel like it should be as good or better now. I shot 50 yard groups Saturday before I put the reg in it in a 20-30mph wind that were bigger but not bad considering the conditions. I did shoot the 25.39 JSB's just for grins and to see it get over 40fpe but I've pretty much stuck with the JSB 18.13's once I saw how good it shot them at 30fpe.

I'm going to experiment a bit more with the lighter primary spring just because but doubt I'll go any father than that. I have a .25 cal Armada and some goodies for it from Tim Hill set for Wednesday delivery so.....  ;D

As I mentioned before, your plenum is probably bigger than needed.  Now, your only option is removing the gauge block, but then the plenum is probably too small for 22 cal (Good for 177 though).  I don't know if Audrious sells shorter reg sleeves.   If you decide to reg your 25 cal, you could get the smaller plenum huma, and swap air tubes.

I know Scott tunes his such that as it comes off reg that there is a slight bump in fps before falling off.  On his data he typically get a fair number of shots, still within Es after coming off reg.

Anyway, just some thoughts, on the other hand, after 60 shots a fill, you start wondering "Do I really need more?"  ;)

You know the routine, not a case of need.  ;D

I'm obviously pleased with the 60+ shots but the efficiency or lack thereof kinda bugs me. I know that the real tuners seem to set the regs so that there are good shots after it comes off the reg but I really don't understand why that's the thing to do. From the volumes that I've read, it's my understanding that I should be setting the reg and tuning to the knee or where the max power is. I feel like that's where it is given that I have no preload on either spring and still getting a easy 30fpe and that the first shot after it falls off the reg also falls off. Seems to me that means that I'm right in the perfect spot with the reg setting but what do I know? I'm just a green horn so I could be totally off base.

I'm going to play with the lighter primary spring and trade around the secondary springs just to see. Past that I'll likely just be happy and move on to the .25.   ;)

Terry if I may ask, what instructions are you using to set up your regulator?

All I have is what came with the regulator which is very little. Audrius sends a simple diagram that basically says turn this way for less pressure and the other way for more in 5 bar increments for every hour of the clock face for reference. There are no numerical markings on anything just a witness mark on the adjuster and another on the body for reference. The regulator is preset at 120 bar which is 1740 psi. I basically turned it to the right until it was at 5 o'clockish which should be 95 bar or 1370psi. Matching that to the fill station and gun gauges showed me that I was right about 1350 psi.

So no actual directions on how to tune the regulator. These are the instructions for setting up the Huma regulator, this may also work with the Audrius regulator. This is how I set the regs on my Scorpion and my brother's SynRod and had a spread of under 10fps on both rifles.
If you try this method I would remove the TSS and use the single spring for setting up the reg, one mod at a time, once you have the reulator setup the way you like it re-nstall the TSS and set it up to the same fps as you had with the single spring when setting up the regulator. I am new at this also so I hope it helps.
Did that make sense? Here is a pic of the instructions from the Huma site
Click on the pic. Just use the tuning part, the adjustment of reg might be different on the Audrius.

I have been thinking (scary thought I know).  If I only filled my gun to 1300psi, I would have to use a lot of hammer energy or increased dwell time to get to 30 FPE and that would waste a lot of air.  That maybe what's happening to you with the 27psi per shot.  If you raised the set point higher you may see better efficiency.  Raising the set point would put more pressure against the valve and cause it to close back quicker saving air.   The faster you can get the valve to close back the more efficient it will be.  The stronger pressure against the valve will help resist hammer bounce better as well.

Thanks Robert. Pretty much the same process of adjustment between the Huma and the Audrius. When I initially installed the reg it was pre-set at 1740psi. I used the hammer spring that had worked the best prior to that, a Hill 12.5lb spring. The initial shots with that spring backed all the way out were in the 950fps range. That's why I turned the reg down to where it is now. When I ran the next string with that same sping at zero, I had speed in the 860fps range which was great but it obviously had a ton of bounce from the sound and I only got about 25 shots before it fell off the reg. I changed to the TSS and immediately got near 50 shots and with changing springs got the 63 shots that I posted. I'm going to pull everything apart this weekend and turn the reg up and see what happens.

Both springs in the TSS are backed out all the way. The primary adjuster is actually 3 1/2 threads outside the cap so I have the absolute minimum hammer energy possible with the lightest springs that I have. Shorty had a long post when he was tuning etc.. on a .25 and he used super low pressure, even lower than 1350psi if I remember correctly. I believe that the port work and valve flow is what is producing the air necessary to get those numbers at 1350psi.

Looking at Motorhead's 50 shot regulated string, he used 1,615psi (3000psi down to 1385psi).  His regulator was set at 1850psi and he used a 28 gram hammer.  He got 50 shots at 2.16% ES (19 fps) averaging 30.41 FPE.

Looking at his string and air used, yours is in the same ballpark with air usage.  He used 32.3psi per shot.  I will note too that after the 50th shot it came off the reg and dropped like a rock.  This string was posted 11/04/2012 and long before the TSS and SSG mods.

You better leave that tune alone and go enjoy it, it is awesome!

Lighter springs, lighter hammer, or both.

This is basically what I've been thinking.  I'm still thinking bringing that reg set point up a little(10-20 bar) will yield slightly better results. The most efficient tunes tend to be on the low end of the knee, and not right on it.  It is like you said, the higher pressure will cause that valve to close faster.  If you think it has a snappy report now, listen to it after you up the pressure a bit.  It will be even quieter I think :)  Upping the regulator set point also has the added benefit of being able to adjust for more speed if needed without re-adjusting the regulator.  Again, it is hard to argue with that string though.

I agree that he has too much dwell, but lowering it by raising the plenum pressure, will probably reduce shots.  Best way to lower dwell is lower hammer weight.  Terry saw significant improvement going to the lighter Hill striker, which says going in right direction.  To lighten it further would mean hammer mod or replacement.   He has the very minimum spring setting, so can't go lower without a spring change.  I think he has to source a 6 or 8lb outer spring for the TSS to go lower.  It doesn't take much to open a 6lb valve spring at 1300psi.  So, upping the valve spring slightly, might help as well.

If the TSS w/6lb outer spring is still too much, I'd try removing the center spring.

I plan to do a good amount more spring experimenting. You just had to make that 70 shot comment didn't you.......  :o

Thanks for all your help John!!

I'm not sure what I would do with all those shots.  What intrigues me the most, is given these kind of numbers, you can shrink the air res down, and reduce weight, and still get a decent shot count.  .... contemplating a new project.

What about a carbon bottled Armada. With a tune like Terry just did , 200 shots from 480 cc should be doable .

Took a lot of air to figure it out but at this rate we're going to practically put my paintball guy out of the HPA business.  ;D

Or go up in power. Now I'm wondering if it's possible to get a 40/40 from a .22?  Hmmm.....

Well I am just as speechless as everyone else.  Great job Terry!!!  I just had to run this one through SynRodSteve's Shot String Analyzer.  I don't know how well it will display with so many shots.  We don't usually see such a long string.

Thanks Keith. No one is more surprised than I am. Never dreamed that it was possible. That's why I ran 2 strings back to back just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.

Excellent string Terry, I am just wondering did you take the regulator out? Doesn't seem to be regulated at 26fps ES, other than that, great job.

One has to realize with that many shots on regulation that pellets can cause the ES to go alot wider due to slightly different weights. Also if you don't wait enough time between shots could cause it also.

Dillion, I was wondering the same, maybe not enough time between shots. Let the plenum catch up.

I do think at least some of the ES is pellet related. I culled zero pellets. I'm trying to train myself to slow down in between shots but if/when I forget I haven't noticed any difference when I go one right after the other or count to 10 in between. Assuming that the setup in the .22 has plenty of plenum.

I would say hes slightly over the knee and needs to turn up the regulator this however will lower shot count. Either way its and awesome string.

Thanks Travis. I know you are correct. I just made a guesstimation on the reg setting. I was totally surprised when it still have the fps that I was looking for set that low. My goal was max shots at 30fpe so considering the strings I think I'll just leave it be and move on. I feel like the 2.9ES is perfectly acceptable for the 50 yards or less that I envision me using it.

If you want a 2% ES out of that string for long range hunting/shooting, you can fill to 2150psi and shoot 35 shots.  Those come out to be 2.07% (18 fps) averaging 29.84 FPE.

I guess I just can't stop experimenting.  ::) I had some different shorter springs that Tim had sent me that I decided that I'd try tonight. Pretty good string. Few less shots but little tighter ES. Food for thought I suppose.

70 shots @ 30fpe. 2.29ES. 1.59 efficiency using 24psi/shot.

I drilled mine out with a cheap step bit and tapped it myself with this $14 tap set from Harbor Freight.

You are so right about this Dillon.  I finally took some time to shoot some targets yesterday and it was a real joy to get back to enjoying the gun.  Don't know how long it will last before I get another itch.  I practically blew the noggin off of one target.  30 FPE with soft lead pellets expand and smack really hard especially at the 25 to 40 yard distances I was shooting.

30 FPE will hit hard enough @ 100 yards too, BTW that laser sight looks a lot like the Swiss Arms one I got , it does have nice adjust-ability and stays where you set it even on springers.

I'm planning some 100 yard shooting  before long with both the .22 and the .25. I like the little laser so far. Cool super small package. Very touchy adjustments but I did get it dialed in.

I have had seven successful take downs on furry targets at 80 yards with my .22 set at 30 FPE.  I have not dispatched anything at 100 yards yet.  Shot placement is key to success at the longer ranges which my HF barrel allows me to do.  However, I feel more comfortable and confident at take downs 60 yards or less.  Those are much easier to do.

I like that IR too, but the scope is more my speed especially with the 16x magnification with my old eyes.

The laser is more novelty for me but just had to have it.  ;D The big scope on the Prod was also done for more of the "look" than anything else but it turns out that I really like it. Old eyes here too. Haven't had a chance to sight in the 32x on the Armada yet but I can tell that I'm going to like it twice as much. lol... It's intended spot is on the .25.

The last of my goodies came today so here it is all dressed up and ready to rock. The paint is House of Kolor Passion Purple Pearl with matte clear. I have lots of stuff this color but this is the first time I have used the matte clear on it. I was hoping for a finish that looked anodized. Think it came out pretty good. The photos don't do any justice to the ridiculous amount of pearl in this color.

The orange index clips for the pic rail are from LaRue Tactical. I bought the black pic rail ladder covers on Ebay. Green laser and flashlight I found on Amazon. The M-Lok rail covers are Magpul pieces. I traded the CP scope mounts for UTG's that I bought on Amazon.

Terry,
Every time I see your gun I like it more and more.  That's the best looking Armada I've seen, and it's got the performance to boot.
I can't wait to see the .25, keep up the good work, your raising the bar...

Finally there was a peek of sunshine today. These pics are much more representative of the actual color. This is why you spend the money for House of Kolor.

That's my problem right now even though I get plenty of power from my .25, I want more can't decide whether to build a .30 or just grab something to that can let me fire a .357 piece of lead...

I found a .25 Armada with the CP 4-16x56 scope for $300. Couldn't pass that one up. Just gonna save it back and do the .30 conversion at some point.

Adding this from another post to keep the build thread updated....

This was the first chance I've had to shoot the Armada outdoors after installing the reg and getting the 70 shot tune. Once I got the scope zeroed I thought I'd shoot a full compliment of shots in one group. Here's 70 shots @ 41 yards. The very irritating flier was all me. I touched the trigger when I didn't mean to.  ::) The other 69 shots I'm super happy with.

Thanks Dillon! That's what I thought too. After about the first 20 or so I was thinking that it was going pretty well. Kept waiting for me to screw it up. lol... The flier was shot 35. I almost just stopped there but went ahead. Glad I did even though the flier still irritates the heck out of me.

My Hawke 8-32x56 Sidewinder for the .22 came today. There is nothing wrong with the CP 4-16x56AO's that come with the Armada combos but the Hawke is in a whole different league. The fit and finish, workmanship, clarity, the fantastic reticle, everything about this scope screams quality.

These are all 50 yard 5 shot groups from this evening. Guess this is proof that there are such things a good Crosman .22 barrels.  8)

Thanks Dillon! The .22 is pure pleasure to shoot. Cocking is super easy and the trigger work has made it a very nice trigger. It's an eye opener to shoot the stock .25 and then go to this one. So stinking hard to cock and the lawyer spring...sheesh...amazing that I can hit anything with that one.
