When the starlings align. Got a 2 fer.
It has been awhile since a Squirrel woods safari. Nick took along his HPA Chaser and my .25 Vectis, I was putting the newly bottled Notos back into service. Nick had a close shot with the Chaser, was not a kill shot, I was able to complete the task with the B-Notos. A bit later I got another #2 for the B-Notos and shortly after I hear a thwack and see this one drop 30 yards to my right, Nick got a longer range one with the Vectis Great productive late after noon hunt in mild foggy conditions just above freezing.
Nice shot on that homebreaker hosp!Ok, so 54fpe, silent side lever M-Rod, house sparrow. Nice.So 54 FPE is enough for hosp; I'll write that down. Hunter
My new side lever .25 Marauder got it's first kill today. I was gifted a barrel by a GTA forum member (Thank You!!!!!) and so I was finally able to complete the rifle and sight it in. The new barrel shoots great and is on the money stacking JSB 34s at 30 yards. A few hours later I noticed three bluebirds flitting about the east nest box in an agitated state. Then I saw the problem. A HOSP had attacked a female bluebird and the three males were fighting it. The female took refuge on a tree branch and the HOSP went in the house from which he had evicted the female bluebird. One of the male bluebirds was repeatedly going to the opening but was not having luck at getting the HOSP out.I called my wife to bring me my shooting stick! The male took a perch atop the pole to which the house was attached and the HOSP flew out and landed atop the box about a foot apart. Range 40 yards, south wind at 4. Freshly sighted .25 side lever Marauder. I braced the rifle against the sliding glass door with my shooting stick for a solid aim. I worked the side lever to chamber a JSB, put the cross hairs center of body and then a skosh up and into the wind and squeezed the trigger. The nearly silent Marauder let loose a 34 grain pellet at 54 fpe and in less than a birds eye blink the HOSP exploded and the remains landed about ten feet from the box. All three males were eyeing the body, turning their heads sideways and looking at it, as if, like, what the heck!! The female went in her box and the male followed. I suspect the two other males are from last year's brood. It is way too early for actual nesting but the birds are resident and I see them get in the boxes during cold spells like we just had. I took a shovel and moved the dead HOSP remains away so as not to distract the bluebirds further. One shot one kill...Tango Down Sierra One
