I have been looking for a pump gun in .177 that was a built a little better than an 880. I bought an 880 for my nephew and it is quite a shooter. I have a 901 and it is also a terrific little gun but still not what I wanted for shooting with the kids. I came across this thread and read through it. I then ordered a 1977xs. It sounds like a great gun and should be just what I have been looking for.

If you were looking for a beefed up 880, you’ll really like your new 1977xs!

Congrats on your new rifle!

6 pumps equals or betters a 880, and 10 pumps equals the 397 for top end speed.
Very accurate when you find it’s favorite pellet or pellets.

Yep, this is what I was looking for! Out of the box first impression- fantastic. Tight and lite weight. No rattle in the pump handle like in the 880, just a sence of solidness. The stock doesnt sound hollow either. If I didn't know it had a noodle barrel on it you couldn't tell by the feel of the gun. I will run some cphp through it a little later. I have a couple salmon to fillet first. Fall is a busy season around here

It is well-balanced and easy to aim for as light as it is. I installed a Winchester 4x32AO on mine. Ranges down to 15ft!

I’m running that same scope on my 880’s and my 1977xs.
I’d like to try the 3x9 version of that scope on my 1977, but so far have left well enough alone.

I ran about thirty pellets through the 1977 and like the 880 and my 901 it is very accurate. No surprise there but it is still fun to say it. I dont have a crony so I gave to use my own judgement on how hard it is shooting. Stuff like how much a spinner moves when hit. From that I would say at four pumps it does ok, at six it packs a punch, for a .177.

I shot at ten and thirty yards, respectively, with four and six pumps, open sights. What a pleasure to shoot.

The scope that came with my 1977 was wacked and Daisy sent me this one as a replacement.
I thought it may be a little big for the rifle but if it balances good and you like scopes, then it looks to fit very nicely.
I haven't opened it or decided if I will put it on though.
I like peeps but am still just running open sights.

Just wanted to mention here that the 1977XS is on sale at Tractor Supply as part of their 5 Days of Black Friday.
The ad shows "Winchester Model 77XS", but the 1000 FPS and model number 991977-402 are for the 1977XS (guess they didn't update their website?). I ordered one yesterday and picked up today. Definitely the 1000 FPS model.
Already mentioned this on Bargain Gate, but thought some of you would be interested.
This is my second 1977XS and I absolutely love the accuracy of my first (5-shot groups covered by a dime at 20 yards using cheap Optima 3-9x40 AO scope JSB Exacts).

I like them for being a single magnification scope that is an AO. But also that it can be adjusted as close as 15 feet! Good pesting range or for small game that didn't know you were there...or hoping your visual acuity is like a T-Rex. I still need to have it dipped in Realtree Edge camo after masking the forestock checkering. That'll look great, like the Remington 725VTR.

I also bought a 1977xs at the local TSC for $71.99. Academy didn't have any to ship to my area for a couple weeks now. And it didn't get mangled during shipping. Its a nice gun, just have get used to opening the bolt after firing to use the safety.

Just checking in to see how 77s are shooting, that is if folks are still putting in some trigger time with theirs. I just started shooting mine again, couple of new ones pushed it aside but hard to stay away from these cheap pumper. The way things are going finding cheap pellets that is pellets at all is getting kind of starry. Mike

I’m still shooting mine regularly... about out of daisy flatnose pellets for it though.
Popped a couple of squirrels with it this hunting season.
It’s still going strong after several thousand shots through it.

It has been to cold to get out and shoot my Winchester 1977 but I have worked on the trigger.
Bought a Wheeler trigger gauge so I could check results.

Trigger pull before removal of the flat spring was 7lbs.
Trigger pull after removal of the flat spring is 6lbs.
I was hoping that it would be less than that. But that may be as good as it gets.

I have a 1978 model medal 880 that never had a flat spring, the trigger pull is 4.5lbs on it.
Hoping the Winny will get better with more use.
