Just got home after driving back from a wedding in Chicago.  The cute young couple makes me a little more optimistic about the future.   Wife and I are both retired so we took our time, using a lot of back roads which is much more interesting than a highway blitz.    We like to eat at small town mom and pop restaurants instead of the chain places along highways.     So when we're almost home, driving down our dirt road,  I see a huge black dog near our driveway, no it's a black bear welcoming us home.

Trail cam woke me up at 5am with a hog in my yard so I got the AR and killed a couple hogs that were rooting up the yard. The 8 month old starter on my mower that I bought cheap off ebay grenaded so I bought the expensive oem starter this time and installed it. Ran errands in another town and got a ton of things done at home so it was a good day but I'm glad it's over because I'm wore out.

Slept in.  Two coffees.  Conversation with my wife.  Left @ 1100 for an early start at work.  Here until 2300.  Things are quiet for the moment.  Did paperwork and times sheets.  Now I'm surfing and listening to tunes in my shorts and flip flops with the fan blowing on me.  I can't believe they pay me for this!

Turned Betty Lou loose in the screened room to do as she wishes with it. It's amazing to me that she is doing exactly what I would have done.
Yes, there will be pictures.     But not just yet.. we still have painting and such to do.

I mowed about 2 acres of weeds, rocks, and dirt. The blades are shot so there was a lot of back tracking and going back over involved. We went to the bank and then out to eat. I keep forgetting to buy new blades, the Bank is in Lowes parking lot . There is about an acre that I didn't mow last time or this time, it is the hill area in back of the house and I would rather mow it with blade that would cut.


Our air quality is BAD today, there is a fire that has burned over 4,000 acres on the other side of the valley and the smoke is pretty thick. A new fire just started about 1 mile north of us just north of where last years Fairview Fire burn area was too.

51st anniversary today, got a hair cut ( takes less than 5 min.) Grocery shopping and mowed my lawn and smoked a nice Monte Cristo my son-in-law gave me this week. We did go to a nice restaurant last night with friends.

I'm out in the travel trailer installing new blinds that you just lift up and pull down and I'm not talking about the roll up kind. Only seen them 1 time in my sons travel trailer but had never installed any. Dang trailer had valances on 3 side of the window. Finally convinced the wife we can only use the top 1 and if I had my druthers there wouldn't be any!

We put the same type in our RV. We liked them so well that we put the same type here in the house when we moved in. No stings.. just push them up or pull them down.

Not much in the way of anything, little gardening, take care of the zoo needs, cook up some more veggies to store, make soft bait lures, and most of all watch it rain all day. Like Scott, I laid down to ease some stiff joints and listen to the rain.

Dan I have to keep a written list on my phone or I'll forget things too because I just have a lot to take care of and stay too busy especially this time of year. I keep spare parts for the mower that I'll eventually need like belts, blades, air filter, plugs ect. Bought ahead of time so I have them right when I need them if the mower breaks down in the middle of a job so less time wasted getting parts and more time getting the job done. I do that for my car and a lot of other things as well. No frustration and time wasted that way as for me time is money indeed.

A mid summer Saturday at the park with temps touching 100.  Kamikaze thunder showers kept me on my toes constantly watching the radar and the lightning tracker.  We had twelve boat tours scheduled but I canceled three because of lightning.  I actually took the 3:00 boat out but fifteen minutes into the tour I pulled the plug and headed for the dock at maximum speed (maybe nine knots?) with lightning popping within four miles.  The bands of rain sweeping across periodically kept the beach pretty clear all day but the heat and humidity were stunning.  Tomorrow more of the same.

Well, we found out that the power system we have will not support the trailer ac and the house ac.😕 It came close to shutting down. Generator which is a 14k watt capacity generator couldn't keep up even with the solar panels providing their power. I have 12 panels but not sure how much power they put out in total but I think 3600 watts.

71°F for the high today. Windy, the young Starlings are still sitting high in the trees, CPHPs are flying, birds are dropping.

Yesterday... Mowed the stuff on our property.  We missed a week so it was deep.  After cutting, we inspected the quonset hut.  It is now erected; some window openings have been cut in, but not all; the door opening is not cut in yet, either.  But... I have PLENTY of room to build a sleeping loft.  I'll build a simple set of stairs for it; I actually miss that aspect of construction. 

After checking it out, we went back to cutting.  Lynchburg VA got over 7" of rain and they're up-river, so the James was very high-- too risky to float.  It was also 95 degrees with about 85% relative humidity.  Wearing long sleeve shirt, pants, boots, we both got totally drenched from sweat, but the well-water shower felt amazing.  We both got a little overheated; we keep the AC in the shed at 71 degrees for the dogs, and it felt like it was 50 inside to both Sonja and me.

I used the push mower in the woods after taking 2 more trees down.  One was a half-dead cedar, the other a telephone-pole-like Osage; both maybe 8" diameter.  The Osage was put aside after being cut into 6 foot sections.  I foresee a longbow or two appearing that tree; really couldn't ask for better grain on an Osage.  After bucking both trunks and delimbing, I was wiped out- but still cut about 1/2 acre of hillside underbrush with a push mower.  Sonja mowed the lower field while I tackled the woods.  I have no idea how many quarts of fluids we drank, but we also polished off a bag of jerky, a big jar of pickles, and half a block of cheese.  We definitely worked hard and sweated our buttocks off.

Today was a rest and recovery day; we checked out Floor and Decor for bathroom stuff in the quonset.  It's raining cats, dogs, cows, and giraffes outside, but that's fine.  I think I may just relax with a computer game after I put away some laundry.  Sonja's preparing some tabouleh and kafka for dinner, so all I can say is YUMMY!

The weather broke this morning which has allowed me to knock back the jungle while it's dry. It will be an all day affair for me. Hopefully I can get to water in the morning without rain. Need some fish to go with the veggies from the garden.

We took Boss to see Killer this morning. They were both so happy to see each other that it almost brought me to tears. Boss was the hit of the nursing home and she strutted her stuff like a superstar. We let her visit with any patient who wished to on that wing of the facility. The staff was very supportive as well. There was a steady stream of them in and out of Killer's room to see the what they have only seen the pictures on killer's wall of. There were a few that were intimidated but we just kept her away from those who were. Boss is a very large American Bulldog and her stature can be intimidating but unless you are a frog, a lizard, a snake or a cat you have nothing to fear.
But like I said, her and Killer together was the highlight of the visit.
