What airgun related did you do today?

Late Thursday night actually, but was able to knock a few items off my (want) to-do list.

First was to scan and enter dimensional data into CAD software for the Edge trigger "blade". I want to redesign it to remove that overly curved shape and make a new straighter trigger blade out of solid metal. Stock trigger is stamped/formed out of  0.050" sheet metal.

Second was to attempt to lighten the Edge trigger force. I wound a new trigger spring from 0.026" wire (full hard temper high carbon steel music wire) to replace the 0.040" wire stock trigger blade spring. This greatly reduced the force required for first stage take-up, but realistically did little to reduce the second stage trigger force. IMO it "feels" better with a more pronounced transition between stages. Can't be precise on forces without a trigger scale, which is on my "things to get" list.

Third was to dig deep into my #3 Freedom "parts" rifle to see where the big leak was and if it could be repaired. Success! Details for that in the American Tactical thread.

Least you GET to shoot in the house. Don't have a wife but I do live with my 82 year old father as his unofficial watchdog and while he tolerates my addiction, if one pellet gets fired inside his house, I'll likely be homeless...lol

 I cruise all the yard sales during the summer, looking for airguns or related to tinker on.

Found these 2 ladies today.The upper is a like new Daisy 880.
 The lower  is a Crosman 66, looks like it takes the pellet clips. It has a green F.O. front sight.
Both pump and shoot. The Crosman needs a few cosmetic parts.
Left receiver is cracked, where it bolts up to the stock.  Needs the pistol grip end cap and forend end cap.
  I had asked if they had anything; the young lady says no....then turns around to her Dad and asks him. He lives next door,and had to run home to get them!


 He took $25 for the pair!    On to Tinkering!

I continued to bend my HW35E's drooping barrel.  Got it up enough that vertical adjustment is within the Nikon EFR's range.  I then sighted it in at 10M (3 pellets in one hole) and went inside before the rains came again.

I got chased out by rain too. But I did get a good deal of practice in with the Titan NP. Hitting 2" targets from 30 yards... for the most part

I thought about going to the woods to hunt the opening day of the Tennessee Spring Squirrel Season.  I thought about it a lot.  But the rain would not allow it.  My plan is to hunt Monday morning.  Should be nice!

Do ya'll buy lots of different kinds of pellets to test or do you buy a few types and shot those exclusively? I've bought a sampling of AA, JSB, RWS, and CPs; but, there are cheaper, lower grain pellets (excite), typically 7.48 and under, that look appealing to try. Any encouragement or advise?

So, I've been pondering my next pellet purchase....

I don't buy special pellets for certain guns.... If it can't/won't shoot what I can buy locally order at a reasonable price at PA, it can't live here.

Archie, I found that my rifles shoot the JSB pellets exceptionally well. 
It is so much simpler when all the rifles are the same caliber (.22), use the same magazines, and love the same pellets.  Life is GOOD!
My brother (in Louisiana) also shoots the same pellets.  So, when I make an order, I include a couple tins for him.
If you find one [or two] pellets that your guns like, that would be a good thing.

 I may find a "cheaper" pellet that one or two guns shoot well. But usually a high end pellet will shoot well in anything.
But then comes headsize. H&N FTT in 5.53 head size may shoot better than the 5.55... now THAT is splitting hairs.

I use them all the time in some of my pistols, never had any problems with them. My Sig MCX loves them and they don't jam up the gun either. It just depends on the gun as to what it likes and what your wallet can handle.

When I started this new hobby (post-Christmas 2018), I would only buy Crosman or Gamo ammo.

I shot 1500 pellets through my first Gamo Swarm Maxxim before deciding that I wanted more--a better gun, despite the fact that I killed my first 25 squirrels with it. Back then, the buggers were literally eating my newly built back porch, so I had close and frequent shots. Blasted pests did nearly $1k of damage to my porch, soffit, and chimney: hence, my full bore entry into air rifles.

About the time I bought my first Weihrauch, Tom (aka TommyBoy) started coaching me and gently nudging me toward some better practices; so I bought two tins of H&N domed field targets 8.64 and wadcutters 8.18. The rest is history; I love the premium pellets, especially H&Ns and all the RWS that I've tried. Nevertheless, I'm still considering trying a 4 for 3 purchase of some new RWS and Excite pellets.

RWS has some basic wadcutters 7.0 that look excellent (with reviews) along with a 6.9 hollow point that I thought might work well in my P17 and perhaps even in my Weihrauchs.  At this point, I've bought one tin of AA 8.4; JSB 7.33; MeisterKugeln 8.18; H&N medium sniper 8.5, and Stoeger 10.19, along with some gifted pellets (Kodiak 10.65 [haven't opened], Piranha 10.5 [pretty much despise these). They all shot well (not the CP Piranhas) in the Weihrauch. I like shooting < 10 grains better thus far.

If you've got personal favs and want to share, I'd welcome the input!

If you want to try different pellets Straight Shooters sampler is your best bet without buying by the tin full. I have no personal favorites, JSB, H&N, RWS, some crosman and daisy are most of my regulars.

 The Excites do well in some of my guns, but my go to pellet for most of my .177 guns is the Crosman Premier domes in 10.5 gr.

I just got done putting together a 2240 parts gun from some parts I had and that a member had left over and sent me. I have a 1377, 1322, 2289, and a p17. I popped a cart into the gun had it sighted in at 10meter in 8 shots. Got up from my table and started shooting freehand and was completely hooked. I’m probably going to have to order a left handed aluminum breech and then I’ll work on putting one of the 10inch barrels on it.

     I decided to work on my Optimus today. The idea I had was to de-tune it for light pesting, and paper/can duty.When I first got it, I took it apart and cleaned everything up, looked for wear patterns, etc. I did a lube tune and de-burr job on it, and fit a sleeve to the spring, made bushings for the top hat and back spring guide. So doing this new mod was pretty easy as most of the work was already done.
     
     What I did to it today was I cut and faced off 3/8" off the back spring guide, polished it, and that reduced the pre load on the spring quite a bit. Of course that made putting it back together almost to the point of not needing a spring compressor. I have assembled these Crosman springers, with out a back spring guide, to make really low FPS shooters for my inside shooting area. With those I didn't need to use a spring compressor because of the almost non-existant preload.

     I took it outside after I put it all together to test fire it, and it was no twang easy to shoot and accurate. I tried a couple different holds and everything I used worked fine. It is a .177  and shooting 7.9 CPHP it seems to have enough velocity to do what I intended it to do. It shoots through cans at 15 yards, ( I didn't try any longer distances). It will go through the 1/4" plywood back stop for the targets I shoot, so I am confident it will penetrate a rodent head, or rabbit head or feathered reactive targets at 15 -20 yards. All in all a favorable outcome for what I wanted, I put about 50 rounds through it, EZ to cock, no noise hardley and no twang. I m happy.
