FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 11/19/2022
We had 18 competitors brave the Texas cold this month at the ASC Field Target course! Even though we waited to start until 10am, the temps were still in the mid-30’s and didn’t climb out of the low-40’s all day. Seems like we really like to shoot FT no matter the weather! We’ll be here for the next few months too, so come on out if you are having FT withdrawals.
Scott Cotton and I painted the targets and checked them for proper operation and setup the course on Friday afternoon. Thanks for all the help, Scott, and to everyone who helps me setup, run, and takedown the course each month. Kudos!! Shooters came from as far as Arkansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and Houston to shoot with us today. We had 10 lanes with 3 targets each, including the standing and kneeling lanes and one special Turkey target for the course this month. The shooter who knocked over this target would win a Turkey (Gift Certificate) for Thanksgiving…more on this later.
The average Troyer this month was 31.1, SD 7.13, Avg Dist 29.4 yds, and Avg KZ 1.04”. There was a brisk North wind that made the true Troyer a little higher, but I didn’t recalc the difficulties for the inconsistent conditions. We also now have at least 4 elevated targets to challenge shooters, two of them at 40+ yards, and we can use our elevated Archery tower to provide a decline shooting experience too for a total of up to 7 elevation-influenced targets. We didn’t use the tower this month but look for it again in one of our upcoming matches.
We started at 10:00am after our standard safety meeting. Everyone spread out on the course “shotgun” style and started shooting. We only had one cold line this month, where a target was pulled off its concrete block. I had spent some time with the targets after our match in September and looks like all are performing well. I was paired with Stan Kaloyanov from Arkansas shooting his AA ProTarget for this match. He struggled some on this day, but really enjoyed the match he told me. Keep an eye out for Stan, because he shows up in Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee to shoot FT. He must really like to drive long distances!
An interesting occurrence happened for the very first time at ASC; we were 100% PCP’s!! Springers have gradually declined and the last holdout, Scott Cotton, decided he’d like to try and shoot WFTF PCP to compete in the 2024 FT Worlds in the USA.
As I said earlier, the special, long-distance Turkey target would award the shooter that knocked it over with a $25 GC for a Thanksgiving turkey. Scott and I placed the 1 ½” KZ target at 75 yards but didn’t give away the yardage during the match. As it turns out, we made this one too hard, because no one was able to knock it down or even hit the KZ paddle despite one shooter who claimed that he hit it, but it failed to fall. We decided to give the award to the HOA score instead. See who that is below.
Hunter PCP was once again the most numerous and contested class for the day with 14 shooters. 1
st
place was Mike Atwell with a 50/60 shooting his FX Dreamline and he defeated Art Womack also with a 50/60 via a shootoff. Art was shooting his Daystate Redwolf. Thom Davies finished right behind these two in 3
rd
place with a fine 49/60 shooting his FX Crown. Great job guys! We haven’t had a shootoff in quite some time, but it felt appropriate with a Turkey on the line! HOA went to Mike Atwell taking home the 2022 ASC Turkey Shoot award. Congrats Mike!
In WFTF PCP, we had a large turnout for ASC of four shooters. I finished first with 51/60 shooting my RAW TM1000, while Scott Cotton finished 2
nd
with a 40/60 from his Hammerli AR20FT.
You can see all the other scores and the equipment used in the table below. One new addition for shooting score analyses is our website
http://stuntcode.com/agshoot/
that shows your score on each lane, your hit percentage by lane or near/mid/far targets, how you compare to your class average, your class winner, and the HOA winner. Thanks to Scott for his work on this, you should be able to tease out some areas where you can improve and hopefully finish higher in the standings.
Our next match will be on
Saturday December 17
. This match will start at 10am.
See you at the next match,

December ASC Match Info
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. For our December match, I'm giving Jeff a day off. That doesn't mean the targets will be easy, I'm as big of a jerk as Jeff (some would say bigger). Expect a 60 shot course of average to above average Troyer.
This match will be Saturday, December 17th (not our usual 4th Saturday). Match starts at 10:00am (safety meeting at 9:45); gates open at 7:00am.
Only reasons for cancellation will be freezing temperatures or pouring rain.
All rifles must be in a case or rifle carrier when moving between lanes.
Please note that it is a club rule that all shooters wear appropriate EYE protection. We don't have extras so remember to bring your own.
ASC Members $5, non-Members $10

December Match Results
Eleven brave souls decided to thumb their noses at Mother Nature and have some air gun fun on Saturday, December 17th. Weather was chilly with a gusty little north wind.
The course was 60 shots set to a Troyer Rating of 31.18, with the focus being on tough short and medium targets. I tried to throw a curveball and put one of the kneeling targets on an elevated pole, but according to the results, this was more of a change up than a curveball. Stan didn't struggle with this target while shooting the kneeling lane from the standing position, and Art and I even managed to clean the kneeling lane. Jeff and I will head back to the evil laboratory and see what we can come up with for next month.
Thanks to our road warriors for making the trip, I think Stan travelled the farthest (from Arkansas). And thanks to Jim Martin for bringing his grandson out for his first match. Layton shot a very salty score for his first time! I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him.
Interesting side note: All three Jims shot a 37. One struggled with positional shots, one struggled with close shots, and one just shot a 37.
Thanks from the temporarily promoted and recently demoted match director, Scott.

FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 01/28/2023
Howdy and happy 2023 from the Arlington Sportsman’s Club!! We shoot year-round here in Texas and for this first match of 2023, we had 21 competitors join us. It was warmer than our last matches in November and December and got to about 62F by the end of the match.
Scott Cotton and I painted the targets and checked them for proper operation and setup the course on Friday afternoon. I chose a layout that emphasized close targets this month to remind shooters how important it is to be well-rounded in your FT shooting experience. There were a couple of maniacal laughs from the wooded course as Scott placed targets in spots that forced shooters to use all of the shooting box to see the targets. But the worst twist of all this month was the highly elevated target on Lane 8 that I made an offhand lane. There were many comments about that target during the match. Thanks as always to Scott, the assistant to the match director, and to everyone who helps me setup, run, and takedown the course each month. Kudos!! The average Troyer this month was 31.1, SD 7.13, Avg Dist 29.4 yds, and Avg KZ 1.04”.
Shooters came from as far as Tulsa, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and Houston to shoot with us today. There was a chance of light rain with a north wind, and the temps were in the low-50s as we got started. Our wooded course tends to block some wind directions on certain lanes and then cause the wind to swirl invisibly on other lanes. We had two new shooters this month, Stacy S and Dusty Burkett, and everyone welcomed them to the match. We started at 10:00am after our standard safety meeting, and then spread out on the course “shotgun” style and started shooting. We only had one cold line this month, where a clamp was placed too close to the faceplate of a Rhino target. For match directors, diligence on setup and paying attention to target idiosyncrasies like this are important for a smooth-running match.
Hunter PCP was once again the most numerous and contested class for the day with 14 shooters. 1st place was Rick Cuccio from Tulsa with a 57/60 shooting his FX Dreamline defeating Art Womack also with a 57/60 via a shootoff. Art was shooting his Daystate Redwolf again with a custom aluminum chassis. Thom Davies finished right behind these two in 3rd place yet again with a terrific 56/60 shooting his FX Crown. Great job guys! That makes two shootoffs in 2 months! Dusty Burkett in his first ever FT match, shot a 40/60 besting his dad. I’m sure Bill was proud of Dusty’s performance but perhaps also wondering why he invited his son along and got his butt kicked… Just kidding Bill.
In WFTF PCP, we had three shooters. I finished first with 51/60 shooting my RAW TM1000, while Eric Pianori finished 2nd with a 46/60 shooting his Tau Brno and Scott Cotton finished 3nd with a 38/60 from his Hammerli AR20FT.
We had two springer shooters this month. Bill Burkett finishing 1st with a 33/60 shooting his HW97K.
You can see all the other scores and the equipment used in the table below. Take a look at the growing content of our shooting score analyses website

One new change for 2023 is that ASC will be offering an Unlimited FT class that allows any of the configurations or aids from the other classes, as long as the gun shoots less than 20 ft-lbs. I’ll keep you updated on how that class progresses.
Our next match will be on Saturday February 25. This match will start at 10am.

FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 02/25/2023
We shoot year-round here in Texas and for this second match of 2023, it was much colder than last month with the high being 45F, overcast and threatening rain sprinkles all day. Even though the weather was dreary, we had 20 competitors join us! Perhaps it was my enticement to come and shoot in “English Weather Conditions” that brought them out.
Scott Cotton and I checked the targets for proper operation and setup the course on Friday morning in the same dreary conditions we would experience on Saturday. The layout this month consisted of 3 targets per lane on 10 lanes on our 3D archery course. About 1/3 of the lanes had close targets with small holes and the rest had far targets with larger holes to allow shooters to practice their close and far shots. There were comments from shooters about which target to shoot in a near to far order, because the targets on more than a few lanes were separated by only a yard or so in distance. Everything conforms to AAFTA rules for courses as it does every month at ASC, but I like to make it as challenging as we can dream up. Thanks as always to Scott, the assistant to the match director, and to everyone who helps me setup, run, and takedown the course each month. Kudos!! The average Troyer this month was 30.7, SD 4.51, Avg Dist 30.6 yds, and Avg KZ 1.11”.
Shooters came from as far as Tulsa, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston to shoot with us today. We had one new shooter this month, Real M who was a guest of Paul Kocurek and everyone welcomed him to the match. We started at 10:00am after our standard safety meeting, and then spread out on the course “shotgun” style and started shooting.
Hunter PCP was once again the most numerous and contested class for the day with 12 shooters. 1st place was Derrick Wall shooting his Kalibrgun Cricket Tactical with 54/60, followed by long-time friend Craig Martin shooting his Daystate CRX-ST with 44/60 beating out Jim Clark shooting his Daystate Redwolf also with 44/60 based on their offhand lane scores.
We had 2 Hunter Piston shooters today. Bill Burkett bested his son this match and finished in 1st shooting 35/60 with his AA TX200.
In WFTF, we had three shooters. I finished first with 53/60 shooting my RAW TM1000, while Stan Kaloyanov finished 2nd with a 39/60 shooting his Thomas.
Finally, we had two shooters in Unlimited class. Brian Stafford finished 1st shooting his Daystate Huntsman with 42/60. I think that perhaps we will have a few more shooters convert to Unlimited as the year progresses.
You can see all the other scores and the equipment used in the table below. Take a look at the growing content of our shooting score analyses website

FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 03/26/2023
Our March match was what I can call “an adventure” for those of us who put it on each month. We had to move the match back by one day to be able to support the ASC Youth Day event on Saturday. Scott, Chris, and I spent all day helping young boys and girls experience the thrills of shooting an air rifle at reactive targets. At the conclusion of this event at 4pm, we drove down to the 3D archery lanes and were greeted with grass that was almost one foot high on most lanes! “Holy Crikey Batman, what’ll we do now?” We made a quick call to our Archery Director, Rodney, and he agreed to run the zero-turn mower down the lanes (none of us are qualified yet) while I used the weedeater to clean up the edges. This is a lesson in delegation for me; I need to get the assistant to the match director, Scott, who has time on his hands (unfortunately), to come out and mow before the next match and give him a free match entry that is worth $5! He’s already painting the targets during his down time, so what’s one more task?
While I was helping Rodney mow, Chris and Scott started setting up on the lanes that didn’t need mowing. The layout this month was a warmup for the Cajuns Classic Grand Prix in Baton Rouge, Louisiana the next weekend and consisted of 2 targets per lane on 15 lanes and conformed to all AAFTA rules for GP’s. All the targets were challenging due to long distances, elevated locations, deep shadows, small KZ’s, cramped shooting boxes, or obstructions in the obvious shot line. Scott and Chris really took my layout to the max while they were setting it up. When I finished mowing, I helped the guys do the last lane or two, confirmed the targets worked, and then we left at about 7:15pm…a 12-hour day! Thanks to both, and to everyone who helps me setup, run, and takedown the course each month. Kudos!! The average Troyer this month was
34.5
, SD 5.07, Avg Dist 31.6 yds, and Avg KZ 1.05”.
Sunday arrived early and I arrived tired but early to the club before the sun was up, but I sure love shooting Field Target outdoors in Texas in the spring! It was warmer this month than it has been, with temps in the high 50’s when we started and up to the 70’s by the time we finished. And everything looks green and alive too! Shooters came from as far as Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Austin, San Antonio, Arkansas, and Houston to shoot with us today. We had four new shooters this month, and they were paired with an experienced shooter to show them the ropes. We started at 9:00am after an extended safety and rules meeting, and then spread out on the course “shotgun” style and started shooting.
Hunter PCP was once again the most numerous and contested class for the day with fifteen shooters. 1st place was Ron Robinson shooting his Daystate Wolverine with an ancient Weaver scope, unsorted pellets, and bad eyesight with 48/60, followed by Thom Davies shooting his FX Royale with 45/60 beating out Jim Byrd shooting his FX Impact with 44/60.
We had three Hunter Piston shooters today. Long-time ASC member, Chris Simmons bested the others and finished 1stshooting 28/60 with his AA TX200.
In WFTF, we had three shooters. Stan Kaloyanov finished 1st today with a 41/60 shooting his Thomas.
Finally, we had one shooter in the Unlimited class and one shooter in WFTF Piston class. Jerry Cox shot 27/60 and Scott Cotton shot 36/60 in their classes, respectively.
The new shooters conveyed their extreme enjoyment to me after the match and assured me they would be back and maybe bring a friend next time. Looking at the results, the scores were understandably lower than our normal matches due to the difficulty level, but some shooters performed better today than they typically do. I guess strong challenges bring out the best in some of us.
You can see all the other scores and the equipment used in the table below. Take a look at the growing content of our shooting score analyses website

FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 04/22/2023
I decided a couple of weeks ago that our April match was going to be a repeat of our difficult March match to give the veteran shooters a real challenge. Everything was going as planned until I was unable to be present on Friday to setup the course, so Scott had to do it by himself. I will say that he did a great job and is now promoted to Assistant Match Director! The course consisted once again of 2 targets per lane on 15 lanes and conformed to all AAFTA rules. The average Troyer this month was
33.1
, SD 5.07, Avg Dist 31.6 yds, and Avg KZ 1.08”. Thanks to Scott for the setup, and to everyone who helps me run and takedown the course each month. Kudos!!
It was a perfect spring Texas day for shooting outside! The temps were in the 60’s when we started, and the winds weren’t nearly as strong or from the west like last month. Shooters came from as far as Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Austin, San Antonio, Arkansas, Brownwood, and Houston to shoot with us today. We had five new shooters this month that are part of the Howard Payne University Shooting Sports class, and they came to “take their final exam” on the course. We started at 9:00am after an extended safety and rules meeting, and then spread out on the course “shotgun” style and started shooting.
Hunter PCP was once again the most numerous and contested class for the day with seven shooters. 1st place was Rick Cuccio shooting his FX Royale with Hawke scope with 59/60, only one shot from cleaning the course! We had a tie for 2nd that was settled by shootoff with Derrick Wall shooting his Kalibrgun Cricket2 TAC beating out Thom Davies shooting his FX Royale both with 57/60, while new shooter David Turner finished 4th shooting his Daystate Redwolf with 53/60.
In WFTF, we had four shooters. I finished 1st today with a 54/60 shooting my RAW TM1000, beating out Eric Pianori with his Tau Brno with 52/60.
We had one Hunter Piston and one Unlimited and one Pistol shooter today. Each of these shooters finished 1st in class. Congrats to you all!
The Howard Payne U students enjoyed their “final exam” more than I remember “enjoying” any of mine back in college. They shot in the Fun Rifle class that awards one point for hitting the face plate, and two points for knocking the target over. David W came out on top with 77/120, but their professor, long-time shooter Bob Pacatte, tells me they will all “Pass” no matter where they finished. Happy to have you all present and hope you continue shooting in your adult lives after school.
You can see all the other scores and the equipment used in the table below. Take a look at the growing content of our shooting score analyses website

that shows your score on each lane, your hit percentage by lane or near/mid/far targets, how you compare to your class average, your class winner, and the HOA winner. Thanks to Scott for his work on this, you should be able to tease out some areas where you can improve and hopefully finish higher in the standings.
Our next match will be on Saturday May 27 which is our usual 4th Saturday. This match will start at 9:00am since we are in the warmer months and want to get started before it gets too hot.
See you at the next match,

FT Match Report Arlington Sportsman’s Club 01/27/2024
This month, one of our guest shooters suggested we have a garage sale to allow the collectors amongst us to empty out our closets, so to speak. So, we delegated the task of organizing the sale to that same guest that suggested it, and he willingly volunteered. Many thanks to our longtime friend, Craig Martin for stepping up. Volunteerism keeps our matches and our club running. There were 8 tables setup in the barn with approximately 40 rifles and lots of other airgun accessories spread about on them and under them. I will say that it was a buyer’s market with many rifles, scopes, and accessories undervalued to move them on to a new home, but I didn’t see that many items sell. I did see an RTI Prophet, a RAW TM1000, a Benjamin Marauder, a Joe Brancato Great White air tank, a couple of scopes, and many tins of pellets sell for good prices. Perhaps if we do this again, more serious buyers will show up.
After the garage sale wrapped up at noon, we moved over to the very soggy and muddy 3D archery course to have a 60-shot FT match. We had about 2” of rain on Friday afternoon, evening, and night, and with the cold temperatures overnight, the conditions on the course were more appropriate for staying home in front of the fire. But 20 brave souls came out to shoot, and as the temperatures rose to the high 50’s F, and the sun came out, it was an awesome day by the time we were finished at about 3:30.
A North wind blew all day between 5-12mph which blew pellets this way and that and kept most scores lower than normal, but not everyone was affected. The course was 60 shots on 10 lanes with one off-hand lane and one kneeling lane. The average Troyer this month was 31.6 before the wind modifier, SD 6.13, Avg Dist 28.0 yds, and Avg KZ 0.98”.
Thanks again to everyone who helps me setup, run and takedown the course each month. Kudos to all of you!!
Here is the breakdown of classes and winners today. Hunter PCP had 13 shooters competing. 1st place was Brian Stafford shooting his FX Crown with a very respectable on this day, 54/60. Second place and only two points behind was Scotty Haslam shooting 52/60 with his Benjamin Marauder. 3rd place went to Derrick Wall with a 46/60 shooting his BRK Ghost. Unlimited class had two shooters, and Jerry Cox took 1st place with his Daystate Renegade shooting 41/60. This is Jerry’s first time coming out on top of the Unlimited class. Great job Jerry. Eric Pianori took the WFTF PCP class shooting his custom Tau Brno and hitting 43/60. The remaining classes had only one shooter, but we did have a new shooter with us today. Welcome to Susan Gehrig shooting in Fun Rifle class and doing very well hitting more than 50% of the target face plates. Great job, and you are welcome to come back and shoot with us anytime. You can see all the scores, finishing positions, and equipment list below. Congrats to everyone and I hope that you had fun!

10th Anniversary ASC FT Match

Good afternoon everyone,
I have some exciting news for you. The May FT match at ASC will be our 10th anniversary! We held our first match on the same 3D archery lanes in May 2014 thanks to much help from Chris Simmons (Match Director), Byron Wells (ASC President), Bob Dye, and Ron Robinson. We were the second FT match to start in the North Texas area, Pecan Plantation was before us, and the already established Yegua club was down in central Texas, and in a few years, there were 4 FT clubs in Texas (ASC, Dallas FT Club, Pecan Plantation, Boerne). Alas, only ASC and Boerne remain, but our attendance is stronger than ever.
As commemoration of this historic anniversary, I would like to invite any and all current and former shooters at ASC to attend the next match on Saturday, May 25 as a shooter or a spectator, and we will serve lunch to all. We will not charge extra for the lunch. Come out and see friends/enemies/competitors that you’ve not seen for a few years and get reacquainted.
Here is the match info:
Match is Saturday May 25th, 2024 (the 4th Saturday of the month) starting at 9:00am. This will be a 56-60 shot fun match with a lower Troyer rating.
Gates will open at 7:30 for sight in and sign up.
Safety meeting at 8:45. Rifle match to start at 9:00am.
Lunch after the match at about 12:30 or so.
All rifles must be in a case or rifle carrier when moving between lanes.
Please note that it is a club rule that all shooters wear appropriate EYE protection. We don't have extras so remember to bring your own.
Unlimited class with rangefinders or big scopes with sticks is fine.
ASC Members $5, non-Members $10
Arlington Sportsman’s Club is located at: 11500 County Road 525, Mansfield, TX 76063(Also called Lillian Road)
