I think it's a great looking gun guess it depends on your preference I don't like wood stocks cause I'm afraid to scratch or dent them on the farm. That's a stock I wouldn't be afraid to get a scratch in and I like the shape of it...nice gun for sure

My 25 cal Cricket weighs around 8lb scoped. I made a lightweight stock for it that looks almost identical to the original and bought a lightweight scope. Feels like a different gun.


The point is that the difference in weight between guns of the same caliber and barrel length etc is largely down to the stock. You can buy or make a new stock for any gun. The extra weight does provide stability for accurate shooting though, so it's nice to have a few stocks depending on what you are doing that day.

With the Mutant, the stock is ugly but.... With it being wood, it wouldn't be too hard to sand down some of those corners to make it look a little less like it was made from and old arm chair.

I'll have to post pics of my setup tomorrow, but I love it. Having shot and in many cases reviewed the FX Wildcat, Brocock Compatto, Hatsan Bullboss, Hatsan Gladius and FX Impact, I have been lucky enough to try a decent number of bullpup PCPs. I had been debating between the FX Wildcat and Brocock Compatto prior to getting my hands on the Taipan Mutant for review. It has honestly been the first review rifle which I did not want to return, and was lucky in that Tony at Talon Tunes allowed me to hold onto my review rifle while I worked on getting some funds freed up to purchase it.

I agree that the stock is not the prettiest. I'm actually working on that for my own rifle.

You aren't the first person I have heard praise the Mutant like that. I know a number of people with impressive collections, that include Kalibrgun, Daystate and FX, say that the rest became safe queens when their Mutant arrived.

I have also heard respected tuners state that the Mutant has the highest quality internals in terms of the machine-work and general finishing quality. I think that is their way of saying that they are less likely to develop problems and are more likely to shoot well out of the box.

Shooting well out of the box is a big deal. Let's face it, sending your $1500 air gun away to get tuned and trusting Fedex not to screw it up across two journeys is a real pia. There are many people, myself included, that think a $1500 air rifle should not need any additional work to deliver excellent accuracy. If the Mutant is made by somebody that understands this then they deserve a place in my collection.

I don't know of many other air rifles that have so few threads about problems compared to many they have praising them. Just look at the FX Impact, virtually ever other thread is about a problem.

If the .25 Mutant ever arrives, I'm going to get one.

The only issues I've read with the Taipan Mutants were a result of some issues in the past with mis-branded barrels. Aside from that, I've found it to be a very respectable rifle, and was in fact doing some pesting with it yesterday.

I wonder if the .25 version will be the same length or have extended barrels and tubes like on the Cricket and Wildcat.

The Mutant seems to have a larger diameter shroud than the others which I guess is what makes it so quiet. It would be good if they could make a shorter 25 without it being loud like the Vulcan.

I hope they create a forward cocking lever too. That's becoming the new minimum standard for bullpups.

I am actually hoping they keep it ugly so there won't be a huge waiting list and a silly price like there is for the Impact. Creating a nicer stock is the one thing I could fix myself.

Ok, a semi lazy day in the shop brought forth some wanted modifications.

1st is that of some BLING .... Barrel is 15mm & had some 16mm Carbon tube, so went about making some delrin end bushing sleeving and sizing 2 individual CF tubes to fit within scope tower & at receiver. Once done rough em up and sprayed on a MATT clear coat to a buff finish like rest of the action.
* Also laminated a D.O.P.E. sheet rolling it up and placing under the scope.


Next was to give the action at the Moderator a personal touch by Crinkle grey painting it with a Black speckle then Silver speckle over spray followed up with a Matt clear coat.

Stock was placed in the Milling machine and 2 finger relief cuts made down fore stock area, Cuts painted Black and a Matt clear final.


Last was to drill and add 2 sling studs, front was a machine thread into a backer nut being VERY secure and rear a long wood screw type post.  Sling or Bi-pod capable now 



Pretty darn sexy and unique now too

The barrel issue was legit, but has long since been addressed. I know what you mean though, it seemed like fans of a couple mass produced bullpup brands were all up in arms trying to lead a crusade against this rifle.

All the "Bad Press" was generated by a few at AGN and specifically one piece of work who was abroad whom sold Vulcans and slung more BS than anyone else.  Take away that chatter and those who know there way around Air Weapons have been mostly positive about the Mutants.

Turned down from factory setting to @ 30 ft lbs ... it is very back yard friendly ( As to shot noise ) .... target impacts substantially louder.
This a STANDARD and not the shorty which needs extra help if HUSH is required.

But that said ... YES, having Dman1114 send me an adapter / end cap so a screw on xtra ldc can be fitted if wanted / needed.
