I know I'm getting old, and my eyes are what they used to be, but am I seeing things???
I shot my Urban for the first time today. It was going great, then at around 30 shots, it sounded like it was losing power. By 35 shots, the pellets were dropping like flies, yet the gauge still shows 3000 psi!
Is there a sticker on the face of the gauge? Is my gauge broken?
I went to fill it and the gauge on my hand pump showed less than 1000 psi. After about 35 pumps, it showed 2000 psi, but the dumb gauge on the Urban still shows 3000 psi!
Thinking there must be some stupid sticker on the gauge face, I tried scratching it off with a fingernail, but I can't seem to find what could be an edge of a sticker.
Am i losing it?
Another issue I'm having is with the magazine. On some shots I have to ever so slightly pull the magazine out just a smidgen to get some of the pellets to seat in the barrel. Others slip in just fine. It's almost like the holes in the rotary carrier in the magazine aren't evenly spaced. Strangest thing! Anyone else experience this?
I hope I didn't get a lemon!

I don't own an Urban nor any PCP for that matter but looking at your photo and noticing the shadow, it appears as though your gauge is either stuck or broken.

I guess I'll be calling Gamo on Monday and see what's up! If it turns out to be a sticker, I'm going to feel really dumb!
-
It's not a sticker , unless that is what we call a stuck gauge now ;)
-
Paul,
that dont look like the gauges on the urbans i have handled..... ???
maybe they have changed them or i'm have'n a relapse of CRS ;)

If it's not a sticker then it's a stucker!

I don't know, my eyes aren't what they used to be, but if it is a sticker, they applied it with gorilla glue! The surface of the gauge feels like its a plastic shield, like a sticker, but I'll be dang if I can get a hold of an edge to lift it off. This one really has me bamboozled!

i just added to my last post here :o

You and I must suffer from the same symptoms! ;D

Reading Glasses!!!
The shadow is being cast in the pic by the bezel. So NOT a sticker. Stop trying to pry out the lens thinking it is a sticker!!! ;D
If it shoots those groups normally, it needs to go back NOW. Worst I have ever seen from any pcp, of any make. GRRRR!!!
Hopefully, it is the mag. being out of index and shaving pellets. Otherwise, if the bbl. is not loose in the breach, there are serious problems my friend!
-
Geez Paul... some guys have all the luck..... then there's you...
Sorry Buddy.

Sounds like I may have gotten a lemon! I'll have to contact Walmart about a replacement, maybe I'll have better luck with a second one... I did shoot an e-mail to Gamo Customer service, i guess i can see what they say and then decide if it's going back or not. At the price i paid, I really don't want to return it for a refund because the price has gone up. Hopefully, they will send a replacement with a return authorization.
Bill, thanks for the encouragement! :o
-
Issues like these make me favor buying from either PA or Airgun Depot...easy returns if needed.
-
Due to the stuck gauge alone I would return it, but would go through Gamo if possible. I have a feeling Walmart may refund but not exchange. Curious what distance and pellet you used and apologies if you said. I've read other posts that mention magazine issues and a shim was needed for proper alignment. I had issues as well, but mine was a chewed up retaining o ring that ended up breaking. Been waiting 3 weeks for the replacement magazine that should have been her in 5-7 business days >:(
-
Bill, thanks for the encouragement! :o
Lol!! 😆
Paul, despite your many compressor purchases, looks like you've come out ahead on that one, so hopefully this will end in your favor as well!
-
I would go to the local Wally world and explain the issue and ask for an exchange. They can have a replacement shipped in to your local store at no cost to you. the fact that the price has gone up, would not effect an exchange. ;)

Yes. I've had this issue.
I found my mag slips into the magazine well too far. I made a paper shim (4 layers, see photo) so the mag won't go in quite so far. The metal back stop for the mag well can be adjusted by loosening two screws on the top of the receiver and moving the back stop ever so slightly.
You might just want to request an exchange. Your Urban should not be doing this.

Thanks Marc! I e-mailed Gamo with my issue with the gauge and magazine, hopefully, I'll hear back from them the beginning of the week.

As far as the groups go my Urban will group like that once the pressure drops below 1500psi but between 1.750-2.750 it will shame rifles that cost four times as much.
Like Marc said the mag stop can be adjusted and that only leaves you with the stuck gauge to replace.
If it was mine and i coudn't exchange with Walmart i would buy a new gauge and replace it myself, they are cheap.
I woudn't even bother shipping it to Gamo both ways then wait for them to repair it.

James, I agree, I have a few spare gauges, so if Gamo does't offer to send a replacement, I'll just use one of mine. I'm going to try the magazine adjustment later today and see if that fixes that problem. According to Gamo's webpage I'd have to pay shipping both way, so if Walmart isn't willing to send a replacement, I will most likely do the repairs myself. With only 35 pellets down the barrel, I can only hope accuracy will improve. Plus, those 35 were CPHP's, I haven't tried anything else in it yet. Thanks for all the help!

My second one had an issue out of the box with the rifle (the box itself was banged up and missing the fill probe pack as well). I went online to walmart printed a one page bar code return and took it back to the local store. About five days for the money return on the card. To keep things simple just ordered a separate rifle rather than any kind of exchange deal.
Far simpler than the Pyramyd screw up on my April Gauntlet order... They sent the wrong caliber, had to send it back before they sent a correct rifle on the way overdue order to begin with. Initial site in went well and did the usual QB trigger changes so hope to stretch it out today and see what it does. Since its already a bit of a whale in size that aftermarket extended tank from Joe looks like a worthwhile extension.

Mark,
Normally I would do exactly what you suggested, however, I purchased this Urban when the price dropped to $172.99, If I request a refund and order another, I would be paying the current price which is $219.00. Still a bargain, but I'd prefer seeing if they will just ship a replacement to the store so I can get it at the original price I paid.

Marc,
Can you elaborate a bit more on this? Are you referring to the 2 Allen head screws visible directly on top of the breech, just in front of the magazine well? Thanks again for the help...
-
Are you referring to the 2 Allen head screws visible directly on top of the breech, just in front of the magazine well?
Yes. See photo.
I will say, I've not done this myself. I was talked thru the process by another member (Geronimo). Mere mortals can do this but care is required to keep things from falling out making reassembly more difficult.
1. Remove stock
2. Remove scope
3. Remove the two bolts
3. Lay rifle upside down
4. Access receiver bolt thru trigger assy
5. Don't remember the rest
... Non-trivial. You should get some instruction on this from a more experienced member.
-
Marc,
Well, that's not what I did, but thanks to your advice, the magazine is now functioning as smooth as butter! I just removed the scope, loosened those two screws a couple turns and tapped the magazine tray a couple times with the screwdriver handle, tightened the screws back good and tight, and wa-la it's working perfectly!
Now for accuracy, that's another story, and I'm still contemplating calling Walmart tomorrow to see if they can ship a replacement to the store and I'll just run up and swap it when it arrives.
The picture below are four 5 shot groups, starting at the upper left target and going clockwise, CPHP's, JSB Exact Jumbo's, H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme's, and H&N Sniper Magnums. These were all shot at 35 yards, sitting using a tripod rest.
Oh, and the gauge is still not working...

Since I've not done this myself, it's great to know that a much simpler adjustment will work! Thanks to you as well!

Sniper Magnums were the best. Yes?
I've seen folks getting really good results with heavy pellets. What did the group size measure?
-
I really want to like this Urban, but the accuracy is making it hard...
Below are two pictures, the Top is two 10 shot groups shot with the Urban. The left target is with JSB Exact Jumbos, the right target is H&N Sniper Magnums. These were shot at 35 yards from a sitting position, using a tripod rest. The targets are 6".
The bottom picture is the exact same two groups shot with my Gauntlet (The one flyer on the left target was me, not the rifle). Same pellets, same targets, same distance, same shooting position. For me, the Gauntlet is clearly the more accurate rifle, and the trigger is & shot count are far superior!
Oh, and I think I have the gauge working, however, I don't know how accurate it is. I removed it, determine the threads are metric (go figure it's made in the uK) so i don't have a gauge I can swap out. So, I poked a needle into the hole in the back of the gauge, bounced it off the carpet a couple times and reinstalled it. Now it's moving, but now it points at 2000 psi until pressure drops below that and then it starts move down the scale! I'll be calling Walmart tomorrow and see if they will exchange it. If they do, I'll give the Urban another chance...
-
Here's mine at 35 yds, no wind.
2800 to 1100 psi
1.3" CPDUM 14.3 gr
2.3" JSB Jumbo Hvy 18.1 gr
2.4" GTO 11.75 gr
Also from a rest, seated on a stool.
Honestly, I think yours is shooting better than mine. I look forward to how your exchange works out!
-
Looks like an exchange might be a good thing for you both, if Walmart is agreeable. If not, doing a barrel recrown may be your best bet. Sure improved my Varmint and I haven't even finished it off properly yet
-
This is my experience with Walmart and the return of the Urban I ordered. Got my Urban took it home opened it up and the first thing I noticed was a loose fore stock. Upon further inspection, the screw that's in the fore stock was broken. Thinking it was a return by someone else I returned it to the store to try to exchange it for another one. After talking to a dept manager the only thing she said she could do is refund and that I would have to reorder. She did give me the number to the online sales dept. To make a long story short, after talking to the online people, the best they could offer was to give me a $15 coupon code. This basically covered my sales tax. Originally got it for the 198.00; ended up paying 204.00 for the replacement. The reason given was because it was a cyber Monday sale price. Just picked it up today so i can't tell you the condition but it appears to be new. After looking into the packaging I did notice some wrapping on the newer one that wasn't on the one I returned.
-
FWIW regarding accuracy; I picked up an Urban a couple weeks ago just for giggles (and price). Have only put about three hundred rounds through it but it does NOT shoot CPHPs well at all. Average is about 3.5" at 25 yards. JSB 15.89's shoot 1.5" @ 25 yards, JSB 18.1's shoot 1" at 25 yards. Nothing to be thrilled with. BUT... it shoots Air Arms 16's at about 1/2" group at 25 yards (go figure, I had always heard these were the same as JSB 15.89's) and absolutely STACKS the H&N 21.2 grainers out to 35 yards. Haven't run it over the chrono yet but it has taken a couple starlings at 40+ yards. Pretty fine little piece for $200.
-
... absolutely STACKS the H&N 21.2 grainers out to 35 yards.
What I've heard pretty consistently is that it's quite accurate with heavy pellets and it's shooting pretty hot with the factory tune. I plan to tune mine down to see it I can get better accuracy with GTO lead-free (which are very accurate pellets).

That urban at 35 yards should be stacking pellets just like your gauntlet. I read somewhere about the big can on the urban might be clipping the pellets. Try another till you get a good one

The LDC is non-removable. I don't know much about recrowning. How does one do a recrown with a LDC on the front?

Sorry to say yours as well needs to go back. Where did you purchase the urban? My first urban shot well at 30 but when I stretched it out to 50 it looked like your targets tried an assortment of pellets looked like I shot a shotgun 😳 the gun was bench rested so I eliminated the shooter being that I already know how to shoot😉😎 so the gun went back second gun much better dime covering hole at 50 much better. Have a post about it. My urban magic pill jsb 14.35 no wind bench rested😎 I believe if a gun cannot shoot 1/2” groups at 50 it goes back till I get one that shoots😉
-
Where did you purchase the urban?
Walmart during their $172 crazy Black Friday price bouncing all over sale.
-
If you don’t already have a chrony. That should be your next investment. To see what FPS the gun is shooting at. I still would exchange the gun
-
... see what FPS the gun is shooting at.
Shooting GTO 11.75 gr., 2 shots, 2800 psi
943 fps ... factory
901 fps ... 3 turns CCW
Tomorrow in the light I'll retest.
If my groups improve, I'll do a full shot string.

Hey Marc, my apologies, I didn't realize that the ldc was non removable. Jason/Nervous Trigger is the expert on re-crowning if you need help with another gun. He has a thread on it in his signature.
-
Paul i just totaled the last 18 5 shot groups at 35 yards with JSB 18.13 pellets.
The average is .357,smallest group .140,largest .515.
The CPHP average .565 BUT and thats a big but, they need to be sorted for head diameter, they vary widely so you get a ton of fliers.
Mine shoots the .218 diameter best.
Anyway, its pretty hard to consistently shoot tiny groups, you need a very sturdy rest and even though the gun seems to not recoil it still moves a tiny bit.
And that tiny bit of movement has to be absolutely the same every time, plus it has to be totally still outside while shooting to truly evaluate a rifle.
I do a lot of benchrest shooting and every time i pick up a different gun i have to become accustomed with it again to do my best.
It took a lot of pellets to really be able to truly evaluate the accuracy of the Urban with different pellets.
I'm sure you know all this and your Gauntlet groups prove it,just felt like re-iterating that it takes lots of practice to consistently shoot tiny groups.
I hope you get the gun exchanged and get a great shooting rifle,i just love mine, love making those one hole groups with it.
You can order the gauge from airgunspares.com.
You can also get a suppressor adapter that fits the splines of the Urban once you remove the plastic one.
Its listed under Gamo Phox, its the same as the Urban but for different markets.I dont mind the factory one.
Regards, James.

James. Thank you for your comments! I do notice a lot more side to side spread with the Urban, and I'm shooting from a very light tripod, so not the most sturdy of rests! I'm guessing the weight difference between the Urban and Gauntlet play a role as well.
I'm still going to pursue an exchange since the gauge is not acting very reliable. Hopefully the replacement will be a better shooting rife, because I really want to like it!
I put the two targets together in one picture below. Both were shot on the same day one right after the other, same distance, same pellets, same conditions, and same shooting position. Rested the Gauntlet does feel steadier than the Urban. Even though I adjusted the trigger on the Urban, I can't seem to shorten the pull as much as I'd like, so it's still 3X anger then the Gauntlet. I have the Gauntlet where I want it, and it feels amazing, light, crisp and short! The one flyer on the JSB target was me, not the rifle, squeezed off the round too quickly...
Even though the Gauntlet is quite a bit heavier than the Urban, I still have to pick it as the better rifle. IMO, as they currently sit, it has a better trigger, better accuracy, way more shot count, and seems to be way less fussy with pellets. All 4 targets below were shot with the crosshairs square on the bulls eye. You can see the Gauntlet did not vary as much as the Urban with a different type and weight of pellet.
-
Oh ,believe me i can see why you prefer the Gauntlet.Only thing that's stopping me from buying one is the size of it,it seems huge compared to the Urban.
I just got the 2.5mm screws that i ordered since no place around here had anything smaller than 3mm and installed one in the trigger.
Even though the pull was very lite as you know and it didn't stop me from shooting it well off the bench, offhand it was hard to move it through that long arc.
That longer screw did eliminate most of the trigger travel,so it's acceptable to me now.
My R9 on the other hand has a great trigger and if you hold the rifle they way it wants to be held it shoots a lot better than i can.
Other than a couple of target air pistols, those are the only air rifles i now own.
I have gone through quite a few both PCP and springers over the years,i got started with a Diana 27 back in the early 70s when i was growing up overseas.
I really hope you can get another Urban that's right just because the one i lucked on shoots so dang good, even with an imperfect trigger i think you would be very pleased.
Regards ,James.

Tune it to the low 800’s and see if the accuracy improves. I stuck a reg in mine avg 802 FPS 30 shots
I've tried 950, 900, 850 and ~790
The groups tighten some, but not much. The best improvement is dropping from 950 to 900.
Did you get your "dime @ 50 yds" before or after adding the regulator? What regulator did you add?
-
I compared the Discovery vs. the Urban at 25 yds with GTO pellets. My Discovery is hardly a primo rifle. Group size (10 shots):
0.6" Discovery 851 fps average
1.4" Urban @ ~790 fps
If my Discovery can out shoot the Urban like this, the Urban needs to go back.
-
Superdomes shot like that with mine but at 35 yards.
Even crappy pellets should be grouping under an inch at 25,yup something's not right.

Huma Reg benched no wind. No reg with just hs adjustments in the 800’s should shoot half in groups which is a keeper in my book. If you’re like me I always strive to get the gun to shoot tighter groups but by all means 1/2 ok 3/4 groups at 50 for a sub $240 gun is a keeper 😉

1.4" Urban @ ~790 fps
If my Discovery can out shoot the Urban like this, the Urban needs to go back.
Yup got a bad urban get another

Marc what pellets do you have? You should see my collection of 177 22 25 pellets. When I get a new gun I start with the cheap pellets working my way up to the more expensive pellets out to 30 then 50. I keep notes on the pellets which one shoots the best then it’s a shoot off for the best groups

My Urban is on its way back to Walmart for an exchange. We'll see how that second rifle performs.

Marc you need to buy more different pellets jsb 14.35 15.89 air arms 13.43 16.0 18.0 h&n field target trophy 14.66 in the head size 5.53 5.54 5.55 don’t buy wad cutters They are for punching papers 25 yards and less and I believe at lower FPS. Wait and get your replacement and use your current pellets the groups should tighten up if you have a good one. I have a few other jsb I did not mention in 22 18.1 13.43. I also have. Rws Crosman and Beeman. If my guns do not group1/2 or less with any of these pellets at 50 the gun goes back but that’s me. Granted some of my cheap springers have to shoot @ 30 1/2 or better or they go back😉 I don’t expect them to shoot out to 50 1/2 or better. in my 15 yrd basement my low power springers have better shoot 1/2 or less or it goes back😉

The replacement Urban arrived today. So far, it's showing promise. The gauge works, that's a big plus! It has the same magazine feed issue the last one had, but I now know how to fix that, so hopefully it will be easy to resolve. It's also showing promise with accuracy. I just grabbed a tin of some lousy Gamo Master Point pellets and ran 3 magazine through it before it got dark. This was mainly to ensure it worked and the gauge was working, but was able to dial in the scope on a 20 yard target. Not the best groups, but considering the pellets and the fact I was sitting on the ground using my knee as a rest, they were tighter than the groups I had on the last one shooting from the bench with a rest!
Weather permitting, I hope to get out tomorrow with some better pellets and get it sighted in at 35 yards. I'm hoping this one's a keeper...

Some JSB Exact Jumbo's, H&N Sniper Magnums, H&N Hunter Extremes, CPHP's and a few others. But some, like the H&N Silver Points and Gamo Master Points are pretty much garbage. I mainly use them to clean the packing grease from the barrels!

Good to read your replacement doesnt need replacing :)

Paul search the forum an how to clean a new barrel. Everyone cleans their barrels differently to remove the cosmoline I think that’s how you spell it? That comes inside the barrels to keep from rusting. Shooting it is not going to remove it. It might make the barrel worst😳 this is what I do get a can of brake clean. Walmart has their brand supertech under $2. Do you have a gun cleaning kit? If you do get the 22 brush I don’t recommend using the brass bristled brush for fear of damaging the bore. I use the nylon brush spray the brush with brake cleaner. Brake cleaner dissolves the grease one the barrel and in the grooves. Cock the gun make sure there isn’t a pellet in the barrel put on safe push rod from the business end allthe way to the Breech. You have to be careful I believe there is a seal oring that may pop out so take a 👀 before you clean you barrel. After a good scrubbing in the cleaning kit there is a loop that you can put a cleaning patch through spray that with brake cleaner and run it down the barrel. You will see how dirty your barrel is. When my groups open up I’ll run a patch with brake cleaner down the barrel sure enough the barrel is dirty and my groups tighten up Any new gun you buy will have grease in them because a gun can sit for months before it is sold. Keeps the barrel from rusting up. Not cleaning it out can cause accuracy problems. I’ve said my peace

Thanks Ken! I do have a cleaning kit with the nylon bristle brush. I've always used Goo Gone to clean the barrel and have had good luck with it. I'll have to look into the Brake Cleaner too. It was getting dark this afternoon, and I was mainly wanting to ensure the rifle shot, and the gauge worked. I'll clean the barrel real good in the morning and send some decent pellets down range and see how it goes.

Paul... not for nothing but..
If your new gun is anything like mine I wouldn't even bother feeding it anything less than 15gr domes.
Good luck Bro.
BTW.... bore snakes are your friends.
-
Looking forward to seeing how the replacement does. Good luck!
-
Glad to hear the replacement Urban is showing promise Paul.
Hope you got a nice one this time.
-
After all you've been through with them, I really hope it's a greats shooter for you Paul.
-
Thanks for the positive comments, I hope this one is a keeper! I hope to get some shooting time in today lithesome decent pellets and see what it will do.
-
My Urban barrel was very dirty. Used a pull through crown saver with several patches with go gone. And I mean it was really dirty. I do not use any rods or brushes to prevent barrel damage. My Urban is very accurate. Great rifle for the $$.

That's how I cleaned the first one. Will do the same with this one, but may run the nylon bristle brush through it if it's not totally clean after using the crown saver.

Well, I think I'll call this one a keeper!
Top picture is a 5 shot string from a bench at 35 yards shooting Crosman Premier Domed pellets. The second is the same except shooting JSB 15.89gr Exact Jumbos.
The gauge works, the magazine is feeding pretty smoothly and accuracy is way better, I think I can live with this...

That is good to see!
Mine is on the way back, hopefully my replacement will shoot well too!

Much better 😉 stretch her out to 50 and see what she will do. Buy some jsb 14.35 and h&n ftt in different head sizes. If you are happy with the groups then keep shooting the pellets you have

I think the first one I received was a return. The serial number was older than the replacement and the replacement came with O-Rings in the baggie and the baggie was taped to a big note that said "Attn: Accessory Kit Do Not Throw Away." The first one didn't have a note, nor did it have the O-Rings.

I want to try some heavier pellets as well. Bill (Avator) is having some great results with those 3 lbs monster pellets (can't recall the brand)!
-
Congrats Paul! Great to see!
-
There may be more returns than they planned on because of the non removable can, mixed with the fact that they like the Buc/Yote are easy to double feed... firing them out chances damaging the baffles to the point of effecting accuracy... there really should be a warning about it in the Owners manual... IMO...
Hope they go on sale again it just had to happen right after I picked up a new used 04 stang and am broke for a while...well at least I can take solace in the fact that my .177 Buc loves the 15g snipers... makes for a nasty .177 so its not so bad not having a lighter shorter .22 carbine...and I love a carbine...
-
Glad to see you got a keeper this time around. Those are some great groups!

Looks like the first target is shooting a tighter group with the Crosman 14.3

28.8 EunJin Domed... A little pricey but the smack they put on a critter and the accuracy is devastating. If I were just plinking I would surely use something less expensive.
-
Thanks Bill! I just ordered 2 tins of the 28.5 gr .22 domed and 2 tins of the 35.8 gr .25 domed from PA. Looking forward to giving them critters a smack-down! :o
-
Most of the EunJin Pellets I get are free from Pyramyd, with the buy 3 get one free deal, due to the free tins being the lowest priced ones in the order ::)
-
Using the GATEWAY-PYRAMYD discount code always gets you another 10%. In some cases that will cover shipping.

The gauge on my urban that i bought from walmart was stuck as well. I removed it and poked it with a needle as well. I also dropped a little wd40 through the small holes on the gauge. The needle is still a bit slow, but it does work now. I paid 219.00 for the rifle and I did not want to wait for a replacement. It shoots so well I didnt want to take a chance of getting one that didnt shoot well. I could live without the gauge not working because of the price. One could always replace it easily.
Cheers,
Steve from Tampa

Steve, replacement gauges on eBay are very inexpensive and you can find ones with better resolution.

I agree, if it's shooting straight, I'd just replace the gauge. My first urban did not, so it when back. I ordered a replacement gauge for my current one because, even though it works, it looks cheap and is slow as well. If you order one, get the metric threads, not the standard.
