Title: Prod...another journey....
Post by: TerryH on February 02, 2017, 12:04:53 AM
Here we go again. lol... So I found this well used Prod for $225 to my door so I couldn't pass it up. It's not perfect but not bad. I'll be modding just about everything as usual. We'll start with a few pics and work our way from there.

It has a Bushnell scope with missing turret covers, a bipod and a rather interesting check weld addition to the factory stock.

It's got a few bruises but that's ok. Most of these pieces will be replaced or covered in one way or another.

Missing turret caps.

The finish is finished on the air tube.

Bit of a scar on the forearm.

Interesting add on check weld apparatus on the stock.

Shot some strings and power is down from where it should be. 600 fps with 15.89 gr JSB's but that's ok too. We'll be making quite a few changes in the internals as well. It's completely disassembled on my kitchen counter right now. Parts are on their way. Let the fun begin!!

I love my PRod and everything I've modded on it. They are fun to play with and amazingly accurate for their size. Have fun!

Congrats on the PRod Terry, I love mine! Mine's all stock internally but I've added the RAI adapter with an AR stock and a LDC from Rocker1. Also a Bugbuster scope with an offset UTG mount. Very accurate little bugger!
Looking forward to following this journey as well! ;)

Terry you'll love that Prod, they're super nice for hunting so light to carry hunting (if that's what you plan on using it for) and it will surprise you just how far out and accurate you can get with a 12" Barrel.  I just posted in the TSS thread asking Travis if I could expect to get the energy from the TSS like I'm getting right now with my Prod.

Thanks guys!! My plans are to keep it light and have it be that carry around weapon of choice. You know that I love the tactical style so it will have the full array of AR furniture. Probably to the point of overkill but hey, that seems to be my MO. My end goal is it being a mid power tune with keeping efficiency in mind for max shots. We shall see how all of that goes. More to come...

I do want to say/admit/confess that I am a certified forum junkie. I participate in several and have for many years. I find people to be very helpful and giving on most forums but GTA members have gone over and above with both advice and parts. I am very grateful for the members that have helped me here!! You know who you are. More on this later as well.

You don't really want that crummy gun.  In fact, I recommend passing it on to me for "proper disposal".  I'll even waive the disposal fee  :D

Alrighty- on a serious note: looking forward to seeing what the end result will be!  That cheek-piece, while rather interesting, looks completely functional.

Ha!! I'll probably go ahead and risk keeping it. I do appreciate the offer though.  ;D

The cheek piece is very functional as a matter of fact. Clueless what it came from originally but it's at a nice height and is quite solid feeling. Lacks just a bit in ascetics though.

Guess I'll have to close this thread and cut my losses. Just read the Prod owner's manual and it says specifically not to modify the pistol. BBBWWWAHHHHHHH!!

Well technically, if you put the stock on it first...you're modifying the carbine!  8)

Why, yes. You do smell those. Was able to purchase used from a forum member along with a TKO. I've also ordered the Magpul forearm, different Bipod and so on and so forth. It's a disease.

Thanks for the heads up, Fabio! The entire pistol is already in pieces. Hopefully have the action back together tomorrow for some crony testing.

I followed Fuzzy Grub's lead and got the Magpul Moe Mlok. Love the look of it. It will require a bit of trimming and modification but I'm good with that considering how cool they are. Just an FYI if you want one they are now discontinued from Magpul. Picked mine up for $35 shipped on Ebay.

I'm hoping that I can make some headway on the Prod build tomorrow night. A wonderful care package has arrived from Fuzzy Grub with lots of Prod goodies. I now have the missing pistol grips. BSB mod O rings, new hammer spring, complete set of O rings for the valve and gauge block. breech O ring, new poly TP and such. Thanks FG, you are awesome! Hoping that all of that will wake up the lack luster power of the Prod. After some surgery on a super stubborn valve screw that left a trail of twisted and broken Allen wrenches and one seriously frustrated Prod owner, I finally have it totally disassembled and everything cleaned and ready to go back together.

The first of the new pieces that I ordered also arrived. Got the UTG quick connect scope rings for my...as PBguns would say...comically large 6-24x50 scope that I plan to use on it. Will have new bipod, the AR15 forearm, new magazines and tactical butt pad should be here on Monday. I hear that my care package from another forum member is ready to come to me. That includes the RAI adapter, folding stock adapter, AR buffer tube and stock and a TKO. I'm thinking that we might have a complete Prod in a week or so.  8)

Resumed working on the Prod tonight. It was pitifully underpowered when it came to me and I was sure that I'd find the culprit on disassembly but all seemed ok. I cleaned and lubed everything. Changed all the O rings including the breech. I drilled out the TP to .110 and added a new hammer spring. Installed the BSB O ring mod. Carbon Fiber wrapped the barrel shroud and the air tube while everything was apart.

Had no clue if we had solved the performance issue or not. Much better than before for sure. Little tuning of the hammer spring and the stroke produced a pretty decent 16 shot group.

Working on my target of a mid power 24 shot tune tonight. Loving my SCBA cylinders by the way!! Amazing to me how sensitive it is to the slightest adjustment of hammer and/or stroke.

Pretty decent string @ 2.74 ES

Sweet care package in the mail box today. Special thanks to Evo Shift for hooking me up with the AR goods!!! I modded the Magpul Moe MLOK handguard and got it mounted. Pretty simple process. I drilled out the heat shield, used my spindle sander to fit it around the air res and shroud. I absolutely love to look of it. I have a second barrel band ordered so I'll add it in the center of the hand guard once it comes but it's pretty solid now. The only bummer to the deal is that my overkill 6-24x50AOEG scope won't clear it even with tall rings.  :( I substituted a CP 3-9x40AO instead. It's probably a better fit for the Prod carbine anyway. The scope is mounted on UTG quick disconnect rings.

Added all the RAI adapter and the buffer tube and AR stock that I got from Evo Shift along with the TKO. Pretty cool that the TKO was already wrapped with the exact CF wrap that I used on the air res and the shroud. I removed the sling mount from the stock because I have the single point sling mount for the buffer tube. Also added the same butt pad that I used on the Armada. New bipod with another quick disconnect is mounted on a pic rail on the hand guard.

You can see why the big scope is a no go. The CP barely clears the hand guard.

Glad everything worked out for you.
Congrats.

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking when you first sent me those pics.

Amen to that, simply outstanding Terry!

Couple of questions: Where did that grip on the grip come from? Also, how difficult was it to remove the OEM sling mount from the AR stock? Does it just unscrew? I replaced the front forehand screw in mine with a regular stud for a normal sling swivel but I'd like to replace the mount with a stud so I can remove the sling quickly if I want to.

Thanks!

Thanks Ed! The sling mount is mounted with a screw so super simple. I much prefer the single point slings. Have same one on the Armada. Rubber butt pad cover the hole.

The tune your prod had in it when you got it was not low on power but rather the stock tune they come with since mine is still fairly new and in stock form it was shooting 15.89s at 600 to 625 and back to 600 for 40 good shots on a 3000 psi fill. It is deadly accurate out to 50 yards as well in stock tune. That was with the hammer at 4 1/2 turns and stroke at 2 turns.

I have since played with it to get 32 good shops per fill with the hammer at 4 3/4 turns and stroke at 1 turn shooting the same 650 to 630 fps for the 32 shots with 15.89s.

I will in time tear into it to open up the TP port and match the barrel and valve plus play with the hammer and valve springs to hopefully get to the low 700 range for 24 plus shots. Right now it is nice to not have to fill as often and has plenty of FPE for hunting inside 50 yards.

I like the look of yours and have a AR stock setup to install as well but never even thought of installing a magpul forearm on it.  That just sets it off to really change the look and I am sure the feel of it fro one cool carbine. Job well done. I did have to Loctite my trigger screws also to keep them from loosening so make sure you check yours before they fall out.

I have always thought the original barrel that came with mine was a really good accurate barrel for the length but a longer barrel would surely bring up the velocity on mine as far as reaching out too, I might have to look into those barrels because I really like mine for squirrel, I could always make another shroud for it!

Terry
I will eventually turn the power up and mod it some but right now I am just enjoying shooting it to much to take it apart to mod it since don't want the down time with it right now.

It is just so light and accurate that it has become my go to gun for light hunting and plinking in the back yard. It use very little air and with 4 mags I can shoot till it needs refilled and reload the mags after refilling and shoot more.

Terry last night when we were messaging each other I was also in the process of doing a 3 clip chrony test with my Prod after installing the TSS I got for it in the mail yesterday!

I just turned in the adjustment screw on the TSS a turn and a half and did a 2 clip shot string this morning.
Just for the heck of it I'm going to tune it for an 8 shot string and see what I can wring out of the springs that I got with the TSS after I get back from the VA for a blood test.

This looks very interesting, how hard was it to do these mods to get that performance? I want something light to hunt squirrels and rabbits to say 40 yards, wondering if this would fit the bill and I would get the combo with air pump I guess from PA.

Hotled with that tune there I got these two fox squirrels at around 25-30 yards, it was right after I got to the state land that I was hunting, I spotted one before I even got out of my truck, I got everything together and stalked him (still watching where he was at getting my gear together) and he lead me right over near the other one, both one shot kills.

Is it possible to drill out and tap threads in the adapter that fits in the end of the guns air tube to accept the TSS and tune with out the rest of the stock components in place. The install them after you have it tuned to your liking. I know the rear part of the adapter threads into the part that fits in the tube so it would need those threads for the rear part to attach with but you could possibly drill from the tube side and thread for the TSS to go in before you install it into the tube then tune and complete assy. You would be mimicking the end cap that Travis provides only from the opposite end so it may limit the adjustment some bit should still work as designed.

Just a thought.

Terry I noticed that you have a thread in "Members Classified" looking for a Prod barrel band, I don't know if you've ever ordered parts through Crosman but you're not going to find new parts cheaper than there, they're super reasonable on their parts too, I need to order some parts from them myself but I'm really trying to let my funds build back up.

I need to remove that thread. I did order a bunch of spare parts from Crosman including the barrel band. The Magpul hand guard has 3 mounting points so the second barrel band will be used for extra support for that even though it's very solid without it.

Ok I was not sure if it had a power adjuster in the part that fit in the tube to replace the end cap. I was thinking if it does have a power adjuster you could tap the threads to the TSS threads and install it in plane of the one in the adapter.

I know the part that stock screws into has to be bolted to the part in the tube and was thinking there was enough length there to hold the stock part of the adapter on plus put the TSS adjuster threads in the tube part as well.

HI Mike. I don't see any way to make the RAI adapter work with the TSS.

Did you get the TSS to work with the RAI adapter like I suggested and if so how did the tune come out on it..

I decided not to order a TSS for the Prod.

I decided that I was pretty happy with the tune as is. 24 shots @ 15+fpe seems fine. Enjoying shooting it even though I'm working on a few cosmetic things now.

I ordered a new set of target grips for it. Decided that I'd change some of the black to flat dark earth camo. Still going to paint the new grips and the scope wheel FDE but I kinda like it with the 2 tone so far.

I'm a big fan of the tan/black combo.

You definitely got it lookin good and its one of a kind for sure. It really does not look much like a Prod anymore.

This is a great thread though I don't even have a P-rod (yet) :D   I've been thinking about getting one.

Turns out that matching the Magpul FDE might be a bit of a trick. No formula in the SW data base. Absolutely nothing even in the ball park in any of the stock color chips. Looks like it's a full on custom mix.  :o

That is a good start.  ;)

I'll try to wait until you catch up.  :D

Does using one of those color scanners like they have at Lowes help get to a mix that will work?

Just walk into the store with the gun.  I'm sure you will get some attention!  :D

How about checking out Cummins and their Beige Diesel Engine color ?   Might be real lose to, Flat Dark Earth. You could also check Military Colors.  As I recall, the Army Really Likes to Paint Things.  Just some lame suggestions from a "color challenged" guy who can't paint anything without getting paint all over everything else.  :P  Tom

Sherwin Williams has a formula in their house paint line but not in the automotive line. Tints are different so no go on crossing over. We have a color gun much like what Lowes etc... uses to match house paint but not enough surface area on these pieces for the gun to work right. We'll mix by hand. Not a huge deal just takes time.

After 2 hours of color tinting without getting anything that will work, I'm thinking that I like those pieces black more and more.  :o
