Friday - February 26, 2016
Cold morning for late February (about 40ºF) and there was a slight breeze from the north. I hunted the pasture behind my mother's house. I brought along the lawn chair and made myself comfortable. [I bet the squirrels were pointing and laughing at the dude in the
RED
lawn chair.] The squirrels didn't really get to moving early - but after eight, it was steady until until about 10:00 a.m.
The first one went to the ground and then back up the tree. It paused on a low limb and got the JSB to the head. (Two quick kicks and done.) About half an hour later the other one came down the same tree. I gave it a lip squeak to freeze it about four feet above the ground and popped it. This one was paralyzed but still breathing five minutes later. Yes, it was a head shot.
About 10:00 a.m., after my phone had vibrated for the fifty call, I gave it up - they had stopped moving anyway. Very enjoyable weather. WOW!

Thanks guys. That Discovery, WOW!
One thing I forgot to mention earlier: I was sitting quietly in my
RED
lawn chair when the neighbor's house cat came out of the brush. It was walking about 15 feet from me when I gave it a lip squeak. It looked around but couldn't find the source of the noise. There ain't much wild left in those fellows.

The Louisiana Squirrel Season ends today. I did get to the woods on this warm morning. I saw about five squirrels, I didn't get to shoot. Oh well - it was very nice out and I did enjoy myself.
The season at a glance: I made 23 hunts and brought home 37 squirrels. This represents my most successful season with the Discovery.
Thank you all for following this thread and being so patient. And thanks for all the kind replies.
The Spring Season opens in May - I hope to see you then.
And since you all like pictures so much, this one is for you. Why? Just because!

Great season you had Mike! Looking forward to your next thread. Already started my new one, as our nutter season ends today as well, and it is raining pretty hard out.

Spring season? Heck we get Aug 15-Feb 29 here. Today's the last day. That single squirrel right behind the house with a nest WAY up in that pine tree is going to have the last laugh. Unless I get home soon enough and track him/her with the HW95 in hand. But it's wary of me now. Because I've been practicing right under it's tree. And I still haven't baited it.
Oh well, there's always next winter. And by then I ought to be a crack shot with that thing. AND have a single cock springer instead of the multipump 880.
Nice season you had. Good shooting. Great pix. Thanks for sharing.

Great shooting and pics brother and you had a stellar season as I see it.
We'll be looking for more in the future from you brother and there's always pest control if needed. Spring will be here soon and with it comes more critter activity for all. I hear night patrol pest control hunts calling me hehe. Ed

Thanks Jim and Ed.
Today was sort of a strange day - the squirrels just didn't want to
LEAP
into my bag. In this case, they get a pass for
four
years.
(Happy Birthday, Beverly, wherever you may be.)
