Friday - February 12, 2016

Yeah, I know it has been a while. But actually there were two hunts I didn't post (because I didn't have anything to show.) But today was a little different. I was out in the woods by 7:00 a.m. under foggy skies. There were many wild geese flying over going south. After sitting for about 10 minutes, the first one started fussing at me from the tree I was sitting under. I took her down with an off-handed head shot. She landed about eight feet from me and I could see she was not dead. I quickly finished her off.
The one in the second picture was moving from tree to tree. I shot at her twice and hit twigs; on the third shot, I killed her with a shoulder to shoulder shot. The pellet didn't go all the way through.
Between these two, I missed another. And therein lies a question: The bold handle on my Discovery doesn't seat firmly (like many of your Discoveries.) I accidentally bumped it up and took the shot like that. How does that affect the shot [aside from being super loud)?
The season still has a couple of weeks - more to come.

Nice shooting Mike!!

When the bolt gets pushed up some air is blown by so you may lose 100 fps causing you pellet to go low.

Thanks Matthew; I suspected something like that - and I know the shot was a total miss. The squirrel was only mildly alarmed and moved away at a leisurely pace.

Thanks Tom. And Dave, I forgot to mention the temperature was about 65ºF when I came out of the woods. I had way too much clothes on.

I think the squirrels here were not moving much because it was too warm for them.

A guy has to get his excuses lined up ahead of time. My brother and I had a whole bunch of excuses for why the ducks were not cooperating.

Just an educated guess. The shoulder to shoulder heart shot is the girl on her back. Seems everyone I have heart shot lands like that.

Been too long since I followed up! Good to see you still out there getting after them, with some success too! Keep at 'em, gotta have the freezer stocked before the end of the season. (Guess I don't know when the season ends there!). We had some excellent squirrel/rabbit jambalaya (see, it ain't just a southern thing!) last week...sure cleaned out the nostrils and the entire family agreed it was good stuff

They are still moving here, we have a lot of cracked corn out and the big fox squirrels love it. No grays up on the prairie, all foxes, but haven't had a chance to go hunt the river bottom yet. Hope to get out for a few hours tomorrow and fill up the nutter and bunny limit. Lots of Yotes howling here lately, even close to the house (like within 40 yds!!) been putting out bait but they come in the night. Will put up the trail cam and maybe if I have a good day in the bottoms tomorrow try to grab a few Yotes too

Thanks Cam. Our season runs until the end of this month. The season has been one of my best.
You must have some Cajun blood mixed up in your family tree someplace - Jambalaya, hummm!

Check out Harbor Freight a lot of the guys use the infra red driveway alarm AKA dong donger to alert them when there are 4 legged prowlers about It is battery powered and pretty inexpensive.

Nice shooting Mike. The Disco bolt can definitely be an issue at times. The wind blows and it moves up. I have gotten accustomed to double-checking it before each shot.
