Thanks guys for the replies. It's all fun.

At one point in December, I had about a dozen or more squirrels in the freezer. I pack them in freezer bags because they will not be there long. If you have plans to keep them for more than a couple months, it might be a plus if you used one of those vacuum sealers to prevent freezer burn. I will pack one and two to the bag - but because my Judy doesn't eat much, I don't cook more than two at a time. It is whatever suits your style that should rule.
And another thing is that I don't share them with anyone who might not enjoy the wild game taste. My younger brother loves them and I gave him some already cooked in gumbo. I also shared some with Dave (Nail Gun) since I know he like them (and I had an abundance at the time.) They will not go to waste.

Yes, I know it has been a while. I have been battling a chest/head cold for over a week. Today was warm and I was feeling well and strong; so I went out about noon for some exercise. The squirrels were not moving much and I saw only four. This female is the only one that offered a shot. The first hit was through her neck. She hid for a few minutes then started moving. As she jumped between trees, she paused after landing. I hit her again and this shot destroyed the heart. She ran about five strides and launched herself into forever.
Here is a question for all of you: Because she was pregnant, did I kill one squirrel?

Thanks Dave.The temperature may have hit 70ºF this afternoon. I was thinking that the squirrels may have found it too warm for mid-day moving around.

But there was nothing wrong with the eyesight of the few that were out and about.

I saw a couple in the backyard yesterday. The high was 12° and there's snow on the ground. Surprised to see them.

I haven't seen any for days. Usually there's at least one in the front yard rooting for acorns under the water oak. Been cold and windy though, and now it's 'sposed to rain, and possibly snow. Even had a little sleet yesterday....

Hoping for at least two that will present themselves in the near future. Had one in the back yard show himself about a week ago just as I was leaving for work. Didn't have time to pop him off the big fork in the tree, much less dress him out... Woulda been the perfect shot too.

To all, a big thank you. After staying inside for over a week, it was way beyond want to get out and hunt. It was a rewarding afternoon on several levels.

Thursday - January 28, 2016
I was at the home place removing some unnecessary plumbing and finished early enough to make a mid-day hunt in the back pasture (surrounded by trees.) The squirrels were active but stealthy. Finally, one presented a target and I took the shot. I heard the pellet smack flesh, saw the squirrel hang for a moment by one hind leg, saw it fall, and heard it hit the ground. [size=78%]When I went to retrieve it, I was just in time to see it run to the far side of a neighboring tree and vanish. I hate it when this happens. [/size]

I have to stop this mid-day and afternoon stuff and get back to productive morning hunts.

Yup it happens, Had 'em fall where you cant see and expect there are DRT there and they are gone. You do the best you can but at the last split second they move or you do and its not a good hit. Had a pair come in today and were constantly on the move when one finally stopped I put a shot right over his head.

Maybe soon they will come back.

Thanks Dave. Yes, we all miss sometimes (if we are human.)
This particular permission will soon be sold. This is probably my last season to hunt there. I have been shooting air rifles on that property for about 66 years.

Sometimes, good things come to an end. I will celebrate the long history and not moan the loss.

I will hunt there a couple more times before the end of February; and then I will say "Goodbye" with a sad heart, but a smile on my lips.

It stinks Mike but it happens. I haven't had any hunting time really, but I did have an hour to kill this afternoon. That is all I killed, that hour. Nice walk in the woods. No nutters. Did see a deer.
