Okay, yeah, an HW30S(Beeman R7) is no TX200 or HW97K and I also know that most folks don't shoot an R7/HW30 at 50 yards, but after shooting this gun for so many hours, indoors, over the winter and falling in love with it, just had to see for myself what this wonderful little gun could do, way out there at 50 yards.

First, the gun. It's a standard HW30S with over a thousand pellets thought it, never been tuned. I did adjust the pull weight down, over the winter, since this is one of my most used rifles for shooting from a standing position. The scope is an inexpensive Rex 4x air gun scope with AO. Yes, for 50 yard accuracy testing, more magnification would have been a plus, but I really didn't want to make any changes to this rig since I don't plan to shoot it at this distance all that much. (I have other air guns for regular 50 yard work.) Then, too, I figured my familiarity with this gun would make up for some of the lack of magnification.

This was my first outing at 50 yards on our backyard range with the HW30S, so the only pellet I used was the JSB Exact RS, but will try again with some other pellets in the near future. The Exact RSs didn't do too bad, though.

Worked my way out to 50 by shooting targets at 25 and 35 yards, adjusting the scope as I went. Once I was in the bullseye at 50, did another 4 quick shots to see what I could expect. Group size, c-c, was just over an inch. Looked promising.

I did a little fine tuning with how I rested the gun on the bag with the next groups, but pleased to report all groups were under an inch. Best technique was to place my open palm on the bag, then the gun in the palm, right up near the trigger guard. On my trigger hand, only contact was with the trigger and trigger guard. Kept my cheek off the stock and was very careful not to make too much contact with my shoulder on the butt stock. Basically I was balancing the gun in my open palm. Pretty odd way to shoot a rifle, I suppose, but it worked with this little gun.

Bullseye diameter is 2".

Best of the day

Based on this outing, I can safely say the HW30S is capable of shooting under an inch at 50 yards, which I think is a real tribute to the gun's quality. Not saying this is a top choice for 50 yard work, of course, and for darn sure, I'm not about to sell our TX200, but it is nice to know that the HW30S can shoot so well with a little work and patience on the shooter's part.

Great shooting and great report! The HW30S is a very capable rifle and you proved that. Looking forward to hearing more about your groups at this distance with this rifle. I wish that I could do that well with my 95, 77 or R9 at that distance.

Nice shooting. It would seem 50 yards is the bar now, with one inch groups the minimum.

When I started this 50 yard project, this spring, I expected sub one inch groups from my TX200 and, of course, got it. What I didn't expect was how many other air rifles of various types could also make that 1" minimum. I've come to the conclusion that the inch or less at 50 yards isn't quite the barrier I thought it would be. Have found this to be very comforting and reassuring. Nice to know our air guns can compete with 22 rifles at this distance for accuracy, given the right conditions, of course. My already high opinion of air gun shooting has moved up another notch as a result.

If you are seriously thinking about getting the 95, now is a good time to get one from AoA. I bought a second one just because it was a good deal and didn't want to feel like I missed out!

The scope was an inexpensive Rex Optics AG scope, straight 4x with AO. No great shakes as a scope and, yeah, I might have printed even smaller groups with a better scope with more magnification, but the scope is small enough not to overpower the little gun and that's important because I do a LOT of shooting with this gun from a standing position. Shoot it almost, daily, in the winter months, at 10 meters, in the basement. Didn't want to change out a scope just for the sake of this test. Probably should, though, given the way the rifle shoots.

Just had the HW30S out for a workout, this last week, and nothing has changed. Still shoots just the way it shot last time out, which is to say, pretty darn good.

Can't say as much for the scope, though. I was shooting this group, shooting offhand (I use the HW30S for winter shooting in the basement, shooting offhand) and after the third shot, the field of view got cut in half, one side out of focus, one side in focus. Fortunately, the adjustment weren't affected, so just kept shooting and finished with this group.

Now, the HW30S is no powerhouse springer, but the Rex 4x AG scope is no expensive AG scope, either. I now have a whole box of cheap air gun rated scopes that have bit the dust on our springers. Lesson learned.

You know, I'm half afraid to tune this gun. Sort of a don't fix it if it ain't broken kind of thing. Will definitely consider it, though, especially when the time comes to open it up and replace the spring.
