Going All American, All Pumper.

The primary purpose of this thread is to learn more about the old American made pumpers.  I have very limited experience with most of these great older rifles.   As such i feel that providing stories of the experiences of others a good way to learn more about these great older rifles.   I also feel that there are others that are not that familiar with these that could benefit.   This thread is all about providing new information about the older American made pumpers.

I have decided to go all American all pumper with my AirRifles.     And mostly the older ones.

I already have:
Crosman 2289.
Crosman 140 (being shipped to me).
Daisy 880 (metal receiver, Metal pump, rifled).
Daisy 881 (metal reciever).
Daisy 22X.

As money and availability allows I will try to add the following to that list:
Crosman 101.
Crosman 120.
Crosman 106.
Crosman 130.
Any older pump Daisy .22 cal (922, 822??).

Interesting while doing research on my soon to be 140 I found a lot of information on the Crosman 101.   The 101 is one of the Rifles I had as a teen, though never knew its name.    As a teen it was my favorite, I have no idea what happened to it.

Though now that I know that my favorite was a Crosman 101, this pushes the list in this direction.   I will be slowly converting over (except that I will always have at least one Beeman P17).

I would love to hear stories about these, as well as opinions on these great American pumpers.

The 101 is one of crosman greatest achievements. it was a simple design and run thru from the mid 20 til the 50s i think. essentially every othe pumper out there can be traced back to the 101. there are lots of variations with different markings and cocking bolt designs. you can still find them in pretty good condition which is a testament to how things were made back then. The best is to find an amateurish restoration which has either polished off the whole gun or re blued it (thus eliminating most of its value as a collector's item) but that shoots well. I sold such a beast (1929 model) for 60 bucks. It was in pretty much perfect condition and it shot quite well (622 fps with 14.3 gr pellets) at 8 pumps. but i sold it due to accuracy issues... mine was a 1 inch group gun at 10 yards, no matter what pellet i tried that was the best. I know of very accurate ones that will trounce mine... i kept it because it was such a good looking gun. There were also rarer clones made at the time, like the apache, and the rochester... it has quite an interesting story. mine was sold to finance a Town and country. That is my white whale. Lost that deal but i'll eventually get one. good luck on your search. if i bump into one i'll let you know immediately.

I'm a lucky owner of a 101. They were well made and designed to be resealed without too many special tools. I read someone called it "The airgun even a caveman could reseal". I wouldn't worry too much about the value of them as collectors items. There are probably thousands of them still out there to be found. The value, as lillysdad says, is in how well they shoot. If a pristine LNIB one came along I wouldn't touch it inside or out and proably wouldn't shoot it. That's a collector's item. Luckily mine will shoot. Wadcutters at 600 fps into a dime at 50 feet. Coincedentally that's about how far I can see targets through the peep sight.

I have the Crosman 100 which is the .177. My wife found it in a magazine listed by the original owner who was in his '70's. It was a surprise anniversary present. The original owner got it when he was 14 or so.
This rifle will drive tacks with Crosman Primers. I made a new complete peep site set out brass, way better than original. It has the brass barrel which is much better than the steel.

Now that i know what it was, I know that the Crosman 101 can be a very accurate rifle, with decent power.

Yes, "refreshed" is a better description than restored. I received it as a box of rusty parts. I wanted it to look nice but didn't go for the NIB look. I cold blued the steel, used appliance epoxy to paint the cast parts and applied a satin Tru Oil finish to the wood.
