Shoe Box Compressor

I have a question, or two:

If a desiccant moisture trap mounted directly on the shoebox is used, should it be the highest point of the air system (shoebox elevated above first stage compressor) to keep condensed moisture from the coiled hose from running directly into it?

After use, could the hose then be purged of excess water?

It seems the bowl type trap would have water run directly into it from the hose, with the trap mounted near the shobox?  Since it may be drained, does it even matter?

I'm just trying to figure-out the best way to keep moisture away from the desiccant cartridge, without overloading its capacity too quickly?

Am I all wet?

those traps with the small glass/plastic bowl are
no more than a token efit at catching the water...

A water trap needs to be tall ,taller the better..
with the inlet about half way & out let at the top.
big in Dia...filled with some thing to increase the
surface area...(Those plastic practice golf balls with the holes
in them work ok)..the more surface area there is the
easy-er the water can be transferred from suspended water vapor
to water drops to drip into the bottom of the tube..
And they also help with a still air zone...still air can't
suspend water as easy as moveing air..

 Any idea of how long it would take for the shoebox to fill an Airforce Talon tank? That would be a sweet set-up to just hook up your guns air tank and turn her on. If you had two tanks one would always be full or filling.

 I have a Talontunes Talon SS coming one of these days and cant wait, but will need a way to fill it. Did the hand pump thing with the first one this time I will hold out for a better option once the airgun money gets back up there.

If you were going to use the shoe-box to fill directly to the rifles air chamber I would think you'd better ordering the 3000 psi shoe-box version as opposed to the 4500 psi version, although I'm sure someone with more experience with this will chime in and say for sure.  I know  you can fill directly to the rifle though as I read posts on the shoe-box forum of people doing just that.

As for how long to fill the air force tank,, that info might also be on the shoe-box site.

 Takes 18 minutes to fil a marauder from 0-2800. A Talon tank is twice the size plus a little. So from empty it would 40 minutes. I guess from 1500 back to 3000 would be close to 20 minutes. I think the scuba tank would be a better fit for me. Here in Washington on Puget Sound I have lots of places to fill a tank.

Remember however the Shoebox is a whiffle pump, unlike off the scba bottle where just a crack rapidly fills, it takes minutes to overcharge even a small resivour.  That said the Shoebox forum and of course the maker can not suggest using a 4500psi to fill a 3000psi tank/gun.  All I would say is the manufactures have to say you should empty your co2 gun as well for "safe" storage after use.  With a modicum of common sense it is user beware, but I would never get the 3000, unless I was dead certain to never ever fill anything but 3000psi containers.

Some good info here on that compressor. I want a tank for the Disco but I'm on the fence on what to get.. I don't want to pay more for the tank than I did for the gun...

The 3000 wouldn't serve me.  It is wise to get a 4500 psi bottle, to fill with the 4500 psi shoebox.  You have possibilities with that setup.  Lots of them.

I'm snowbound ATM.  We had a major snow/ice storm blow through here last night and today.

Will get around 5 deg. tonight, and -5 tomorrow night, on top of all the snow and ice.

It put my Joe's order on hold (thanks, Gene!), 'til I may get out!  Bumpers on my wife's and my vehicles are lower than the snow depth, on our road.  They don't plow the snow on side roads, only emergency access roads, so I'm at the mercy of the plow.

If you can time your fills, IE how long from 2000 to 3000 w/shoebox, you could use a heavy duty appliance timer to shut it off at approx. 3000 psi or close enough.

OK...tank arrived today, Joe's goodies should be shipped soon, and the shoebox is the only unknown.

Was surprised how light the 30 min. composite tank seemed.  Where's my scale?

All this "stuff" itching to put to good use, and the main component out-to-lunch.

takes me about 10 minutes to take my TalonSS tank from 2000-3000psi. and don't waste your money on a 3000psi shoebox unless you only plan to fill guns/tanks with maybe 2500psi FOREVER( and who really knows what their long range plans are- can you predict what your needs fill be 5 years from now?).. it's easy to fill a 3000psi tank with a 4500psi shoebox as long as you monitor filling pressure with a gauge in your fill whip.  the fill is slow enough that anyone with half a brain won't overfill a tank.

You betcha! Very nice! Mailman had to trudge through deep snow to leave it on the porch, but I give him kudos for doing that!

Exactly, its just like filling from a 4500psi tank without a 3000psi regulator, a modicum of attention and its very safe.

 dollarhunt, that's not bad at all. It would take me ten minutes and lots of sweat anyway. I completely agree with you and huklbery on the 4500 psi model. "Go big or stay home" is a moto I live by. My pocket book and wife don't agree with that moto all the time though. I am really leaning towards a shoebox (4500 psi) for my air needs. Will have to wait until summer for my pocket book to catch up to my moto. HEHEHE Maybe I should get on the waiting list now.

I put my name on the list about a month ago for a 4500 PSI unit as I was going to use it to fill a CF 44 cu ft tank than fill my Marauder from the tank. It sounded like a good plan at the time but after thinking about this a little more I realized that I could fill my tank at a dive shop for $7 or so and could fill my Marauder about 27 times before needing to refill my tank. So that would mean I could fill my tank around 2.5 years before the cost to fill it reached the cost of a Shoebox Compressor. By than I am sure technology will have moved forward and better ways to fill your PCP's will have been developed. So if you have a dive shop or a fire department that is willing to fill your tank you may want to do some calculations to decide what the best move would be.

I considered the same factors but I decided I'd like to be able to fill my tanks at home any time I'd like rather than have to make the 30 minute drive to the paintball shop.  No doubt you are correct that in a few years there will be improvements in the field of air gun compressors and more options will exist for the consumer, but it seems that's the nature of all technology so right now I'm comfortable with the existing technology

Shoebox is a must have for me.  No dive shops, no FD willing to fill, no nitrogen at acceptable prices.

So for me, there is no other alternative besides pumping, ATM.

Can't wait for the shoebox.  Better be sooner, methinks.

I like the idea of filling where I'm most comfortable...home!

Doesn't matter what it all costs, it's all there is!

I felt the same way as the local dive shop had gone out of business and I could not find another closer than 25 miles. So that made me add my name to the shoebox list. After that I decide to checked with our fire department, but down deep I knew they would say no and they did. However they did tell me where there was a local dive shop and it is only 6 miles away. Seems like a dock company decided to open up a dive shop after the other one closed and they are not listed anywhere yet. So I will keep my name on the list but I plan to use the dive shop. When my name comes up I may be able to help some one get a shoebox quicker by letting them use my name.
