Finally, it arrived...

Impressive motor! Filling the bottle now. The cylinders do get warm. Have a fan on the unit to help with cooling. Yes, I'm running it with the cover off, to lube the rods every 2 hours. Lubed and cool, that's my motto.

I could see if kids are in the house, running it without the cover is unwise.

I appreciate mechanical engineering, and this box pretty much trips my trigger (pun intended) on the cool scale. A clear plexiglass cover would give it a chance to show off the eye candy within.

It would be perfect if it had some access holes in the back, to get to the cylinder rods, for lube, although the bottom cylinder rod would be hard to access.

This thing is so economically made, it's brilliant. When parts wear out, they are cheap.

The pancake compressor is louder than the shoebox, but that may be my failed hearing.

Have it in the study with the door shut, I can hear the whir, whir, whir of its strokes, barely audible. My wife had no trouble falling asleep with it on.

It reminds me of an old washing machine I had years ago. If the tub was filled too full, it made a similar sound on spin cycle, as the suspension struggled to keep the tub in check.

Not that the noise sounds labored at all on the shoebox, it just sounds similar, but obviously not as loud as the washer. Did that make any sense?

First impressions are two thumbs up. It should be well broken-in by the time the 44 cu. ft. bottle is filled.

EDIT: I do have one minor niggle; the brushed aluminum cover could be made of thicker stock. It is very thin and fragile. A cost cutting measure I'm sure, but it does keep curious hands out of the works, in its defense.

Yeup! My wife was getting tired of me throwing railroad ties...in the house. I thought they were toothpicks.

Edit: @longislandhunter, the pancake compressor came-on every 8 to 10 minutes, for about 30 seconds, up to 2000 psi, when I stopped for the evening. The output varied from 85 psi to 88 psi (up and down), during that time.

I'm curious if that will change much, when the shoebox has to work harder, as the pressure climbs?

OK...got the equipment piled together for a group hug, last night. Finished the fill this AM, before work.

And, of course, running the shoebox without the cover isn't recommended.

The desiccant is already pink, with 12+ hours of runtime, on the shoebox. Going to have to rethink the moisture thing.

Perhaps since I won't let the pressure drop below 3000 now, it won't be a big issue. Normally, I have the shoebox at least a foot and a half higher than the pancake, when operating. 25 ft. of hose may not be enough, though. Mull-it-over time.

Those moisture filters are pretty cheap and easy to replace. I bought a spare but if you say they are sucking up moisture that quickly perhaps I should order a couple more. Although,, I would think you are correct in that you will now only be "topping off" you won't be accumulating as much moisture. Anyway, glad to see the shoebox is working so well for ya

Hey R.B. my thougths on the moisture. It can't be as bad as using a pump full time. What I have done is set up a schedule for inspection of the gun, or in my case guns. Do a teardown and look for any damage,rust etc., relube the tube and orings with silicon grease,and go shoot. Refills are not bad when we have this neat little compressor to do all the work. Now this may not be 100% right but I have had a Disco for about three years and was pumping with a pump untill I got the Shoebox plus have added a Bam B-50 a month ago so the B-50 doesn't count yet, but it will go on the schedule also. So far no problems with any moisture damage.

Jeff, I think twohsieh said the filter may be refilled with desiccant. Believe he bought extra to fill. I'll see tonight if the filter is easily disassembled, without having to take-off the added fittings. I do have packs of desiccant, from years of electronics packaging. May have to put all the loose desiccant on a tray in the oven, to force out the moisture, along with the pink stuff.

Gary, are you using a filter at the shoebox? And yes, pumping for three years is certainly not 100% right! BWAAHAA!

I've been doing it for months myself, with two rifles. It isn't 100% right either!

here is it guys. $3.77 for 2.2 lbs of it. the desiccant can be refilled.
also someone posted that you can bake the pink desiccant and it will turn blue again (removing the moisture).

I've got a question for all you desiccant gurus; may the stuff be popped in the microwave? I'm guessing the moisture will cause the granules to explode, if tried?

Would have a hard time explaining all the colored "salt" (yeah, she'd believe that!) embedded in the inside coating.

Could possibly make a can to attach to her blowdryer, so it would dry over time. Shouldn't take too long, either!

R.B. I have two moisture traps, one coming off the oiless compressor and the other at the S.B. plus the shop compressor is on the floor and the S.B. is about 36" higher on the workbench. Unless you are in an extremely humid area I think a teardown inspection should be good to catch any damage before it gets to the place where safety is an issue.

Thanks, Gary. One final note; the shoebox cutoff @ 4450 psi. I don't know if that was luck, yet. Will be interesting to see how cutoff pressure varies, from fill-to-fill.

Quite a clever and simple way to cutoff, if a bit noisy as the bar hits the switch lever repeatedly.
