My "custom shop" 2400 had bluing like that, complete with scratches thru to the white, bare spots, and a big gouge. I cold blued the parts applicable for a HPA build with a 2260 tube. The 2260 tube, BTW, was in almost as sorry a state. This was around November last year. My 2400 also took almost eight weeks to get, with repeated phone calls after six weeks, tkps, you should see the valve they sent me; looks like something you would find lying in an alley......
Stony, if it really really bothers you, I would be happy to make a donation towards your future airgun fund, and take that rust bucket off your hands.I know a youngster next door that is mowing lawns to save up for a crosman backpacker.
I believe their main market is people who don't know any better, so they probably are safe for now. They hype products and people believe them. Lie long and loud enough and it becomes truth to some, t

And other have had the same problem. There simply is no excuse for quality being that bad. Especially from the Custom shop AG a member brought up. Something is up with Crosman and perhaps actually talking about it will get them to straighten it out. For now it sits back in my gun cabinet scopeless. Till I decide what to do with it.

Have you made a call/email to Crosman explaining your situation? You may progress a little bit further in your goal (whatever that may be) in discussing it directly with them. I doubt Crosman is scanning this forum looking to solve everyone's problems that post about it.
Since I managed to take apart and functionally reassemble my 760 I think I will "project" up my 2240. Tear it down, few small mods and then Duracoat it in Coyote Brown. Takes care of my finish worries! That and the black grips should look pretty nice. You could go with something similar??
if it were mine I'd buff it out with Remoil and paper towels...depending on quality, paper towels range from slightly to mildly abrasive and will knock that orange off real quick...looks like that one needs oiled every week or so..I would like at the environment that it was in while being stored... any vinegar fumes or batteries being charged nearby?...boiling salt water?...bathroom nearby producing shower steam?....clogged up dryer vent?...spilled perfume?
