Learning to shoot an air rifle is easy compared to learning to play a guitar. I am on day 3 with the guitar, and at day 3 with an air rifle I was shooting good groups at 50 yards. I need to stick with my air rifles.

I hear you.  I recently started to learn to play guitar at 41 then decided to learn banjo at 42 and it is hard.  I started guitar last March switched to Banjo in June.  What I have figured out is it will take me 20 years to be decent at playing a stringed instrument.  Understand I do believe I have a knack at it.  Shooting is much easier in comparison.  I also shoot a longbow which is difficult.  Even with a longbow I got decent in 6 months to a year with steady practice.  No way with a banjo in that amount of time.

Jesse, listen to Brazos.  The guitar is bad enough.  You do not want to think about the banjo.  I love to hear them but would not consider playing one.  You will feel you've accomplished something when you master the "F" chord - three strings held down with one finger!!

Electric guitars have thinner strings which are easier to depress but they are closer together.  Nylon strung acoustic guitars depress easily, too.

A good quality acoustic guitar is easier to play than a cheap one, but like your air rifles, they ain't cheap!

I just bought my daughter a nice acoustic guitat, she gave me back my electric. I have small hands so the thinner neck helps. I have given myself 60 days to learn one song (knocking on heaven's door). I still like shooting my TalonP more.

I enjoy shooting my airguns while listening to music involving guitars. I even have that old banjo favorite from The Deliverance, Dueling Banjos! Gotta love banjos!

Been playing the guitar for over 10 years.  Tip for you.  Learn to play on a cheaper acoustic.  Much like learning to shoot a cheap rifle.  They are much harder to play and to make sound well.  When you have the have it down to where you don't have to look at either hand to play.   Move on up to a nicer acoustic or even electric and you will feel like Eric Clapton or Esteban.  Stay with it, its not easy.

I am 55 and retired, so I have time and I bought a program that I actually see improvement after only 3 days. I plan to practice atleast an hour a day (which will not take too much time from shooting). My daughter even complimented me. She can pick up anything and teach herself. She turns 16 2-4-14, I really am proud (disgusted) of her talent. She also liked the program so much that she asked if she can borrow it from me.

I hate to say this but I see this thread getting moved.

Best advice is to take guitars lessons. Also...a really cheap, badly set up guitar will make you NOT want to play or learn. There are a ton of inexpensive but very good guitars out there these days...I have a room full!

Air guns and Air Guitars have something in common. They are easy to learn.

I have been playin' at the guitar since I was 16 or so. I currently have three electrics and one acoustic/electric. Though I play fair, and can fall in with most anyone playin', or with songs on the radio, I am not an accomplished musician. I guess the part of my brain doesn't work, that separates the true musicians from the plain old guitar players. I enjoy playin' with others, and can entertain myself though. I agree with that one should first get a decent guitar, set up by a professional. Most $100 guitars want to fight back at you when you are learning. A hard playin' guitar is discouraging to say the least. A "few" hundred bucks will get you a good sounding, easy playing guitar. I never had guitar lessons. I just got a book of chords, learned a few and started playing. Then added a few chords here and there, and learned bar chords. Get yourself a good electronic tuner so you can keep your guitar in standard key. Then, when you hear a tune you like on the radio, it's pretty easy to figure out what the root note of the song is, then the rest will follow. One more thing, Jessie, you said you have small hands. Most guitar necks are either a 25 1/2 inch scale (most Fenders and many others) or a 24 3/4 inch scale (Most Gibsons and many others) You may find the 24 3/4 easier to play with smaller hands. I like the 24 3/4 scale neck the best as my hands are also medium sized. To determine which length scale your guitar has measure from the nut (the top piece that the strings rest on) to the bridge (the rear piece that the strings rest on). Keep at it and don't get discouraged! Here is a tune my nephew and I recorded with his camcorder last summer. I am playing the red Ovation.

Bill you can jam! I am not getting discouraged and I am on day 4. I bought a program called Rocksmith 2014. I am trying to learning an easy song (knocking on heaven's door) and between learning the song it is also teaching me chords. It also has video games that make learning chords fun.

Stick with it Jesse.  It's something you can enjoy all of your days.  After dinner, I'll sit down and play for an hour or so, just to keep at it. Sometimes "she" just doesn't wanna play for you...and that's OK too.
   It's funny if you ever get books by famous artists/groups....that you'll see how simple their first songs are, (CAGED) chording, and then you see their chords evolve in difficulty, as they got better!  Look up the "CAGED system".   Tons of money has been made below the 5th fret...both chording and picking out simple scales
