What distance are you going to shoot at? If it is more than 25 yards go with the 50. I have both and the only downside to the 50 is the cocking effort for the power. Not difficult just close to 95/34 range. JM makes a plinkers kit for the 50 that I hear does about 8-8.5 fpe so that could be an option. A little more power than the 30 in a full size gun.

In all honesty,if I wanted to shoot much past 30 yards,I would probably grab my CZ455 American 22LR. as I do considerable off hand and bench work from 50 yards with that rifle.But for just sitting on the back porch and popping off tin cans,flies and critters that like to eat small holes in my sheds looking for a place to call home for the winter,most shots would be from zero to maybe 20 or 30 yards.I wouldn't have to worry about my 22lr's traveling into the next farm over.

Oh and as an added thought,what is the trigger pull length on the 30s and 50s ? I prefer a trigger length of about 12-3/4" to maybe 13-1/2" and style of stock usually governs what feels best.I do shoot the usual factory rifles which usually come to long for most at 14" or so.I can adapt if not to overly long but in some instances,I have cut the stock to fit and that is usually on a hunting rifle while wearing winter hunting coats.

Thanks Jim. That helps also. Looks like I'll be getting the 30 over the 50 for that reason and of course for other reasons as well . It sure sounds like a good place to start and will present not only myself,but my wife as well, with a nice air rifle that we both can share.I can only go up from there and if I know me,I will probably add another air rifle along the way.

I have small hands and I ordered set back triggers for them, never noticed the length of pull to be honest.  With my diminutive hands to get the pad of my finger on I had to get these set back blades, the length of pull was fine for me and I'm 5' 7".

That's all I am also,5'7", so you know where I am coming from. Thanks for the extra mile in taking a picture for me and using the tape measure to view the trigger pull lengh clearly.Your set back trigger would give the ideal length for me.Sure is something to think about should I go that route.It beats cutting into a perfect stock.

It's not the pull though, the 30 is youth sized and the 50 is still well under a RWS Diana 34  in size.  It's the straight blade trigger, from the wrist of the rifle its quite long for small hands.  To be honest I had forgotten that I had done that and only remembered when you asked about the pull length.

EMRidier, how do you like your Vortek? compared to stock spring?

The hw30 is an excellent choice for most any target shooting, plinking and small game hunting inside of 30 yards.  IMHO it is best in .177 too. Very accurate and well made. You are avoiding my mistake of trying a Gamo by going for HW quality in your first gun.  Wise decision. 

The cocking lever insert is a nice to have. Not a must have. The gun shoots the same with or without. The rubbing bugged me so I put one in both of my R7s.

I had an email conversation with Tom of Vortek. He told me the installation of a PG2 kit would eliminate the need for the cocking lever insert mod. He said he has never seen any galling in any R7 with a PG2 kit installed. I have the PG2 kit in my R7 .20 and haven't had any issues with the cocking lever

For a fact, this AG addiction may be more insidious than was my CZ 452 addiction.  Maybe, if for no more reason than being able to shoot the AG in my backyard.  For instance, I've now got the 'hots' for an under lever AG.  And yes, I've got the parts set aside to build the, sooner or later, needed spring compressor/s.
