I am pretty close to my selection of a HW30S in .177. I think this little rifle would serve me well.It would be my first AG so I have zero knowledge. Where is the best place to purchase this rifle and the cocking insert that I have been reading so much about ? I am considering mounting the Hawke 2x7x32 on it also so mounting recomendations are called for also.I was considering Williams peep but with my old eyes and glasses,I doubt that would work. Is the cocking insert easy to install? I have no spring compresser.

You have not said what gun will be used for, but I think an HW 30 would be a nice gun. I recently purchasd the HW50 and like it a bunch, it's a quality gun and shoots well. I'm considering an HW 30 as my next purchase.

I have 4 Hawke scopes and all are nice units.

PyramidAir is a great place to at least start and they stand in back of their guns.

Check Airguns of Arizona for free shipping on HW's if that is still going on. Be aware there are potential customer service issues and sometimes they are difficult to reach. Do not email, do not backorder. If they have it NIB and you order over the phone it should be fine. Excellent rifle and scope selection. 2-7x32 is my fave right now. Do take a look at the HW 50s as well; a little more4 horsepower in just a slightly bigger package. Don't fret the cocking insert unless your gun really needs it. My newish 50s is just fine the way it is. Best, tk

I have the 2-7X32 Hawke on mine with Burris Signature rings. The objective is about 1/8 inch off the tube.

I am the proud new owner of a gently used HW30S .22 cal
It is a fun little shooter, and I have not scoped it yet. Your selection of .177 cal. is probably a wise choice for this model.
Since you mentioned that this is your first, be advised that it is not a power house, like some of the other offerings you may have read about here. It is light-weight, very well made, and with proper care should serve you well for many years.

The hw30 is an excellent choice for most any target shooting, plinking and small game hunting inside of 30 yards. IMHO it is best in .177 too. Very accurate and well made. You are avoiding my mistake of trying a Gamo by going for HW quality in your first gun. Wise decision.

The cocking lever insert is a nice to have. Not a must have. The gun shoots the same with or without. The rubbing bugged me so I put one in both of my R7s.

go for it! Both of your choices are excellent and will serve you well. The 30s is a sweet little AG that will give you many years of Shooting pleasure....in fact it's an AG you can hand down through the years.

I have a "How Too Simplified" tutorial posted in this gate should you decide too go with an insert. I would post the link myself but the machine i'm using right now is not user friendly.....perhaps another member will post it here.Some guns rub more than others so wait and see. One remark, also make sure you buy decent pellets, this means you generally end up in buying JSB, H&N or RWS.

Excellent choice. I just purchased my my HW30S and cannot put this rifle down. The accuracy is amazing, easy to cock and not hold sensitive at all. I have a Center Point 3-9 X 32 mounted at this time.

I purchased my rifle from Airguns of Arizona and had no issues. I walked into the store to order it. Shipped in good packaging.

I too, started this hobby (addiction) with Gamo and sorry I didn't start with such fine workmanship as Weihrauch.

I purchased a new HW30S earlier this year. It is a fun, addictive rifle to shoot. Mine occasionally rubs but a dab of grease on the contact area smoothed it out. I would not worry about it.

Thank you for all the replies and the help you have given me and it's nice to know that you will be there for me if I need help with anything. This air gun thing is all new to me and I have been all up and down the board on models and never to sure about any of them. It pains me that you have to pay good money for a rifle and turn around and spend more or tear it apart to fix it so that issues can be resolved.But I see that if one chooses the air rifle game then one must be prepared to learn much more about them then just pulling the trigger.I'm 66 years old and have been shooting many different firearms all my life but these pellet launchers are very new to me.The last time I shot air was with an old Benji BB gun.

One of my R7s has a vortek kit and the other has JM spring, guide and seal.

I have a slight preference for the JM kitted gun. Shoots with a bit less power, but is smoother and has a more mellow (less snappy) shot cycle.

In absolute terms, the R7 is improved by and shoots well with either kit.

Are thes spring kits easy to install without a spring compressor since the R7 or HW30s has a weaker spring force?

The 30S/R7 is low powered due to short swept volume not so much a weak spring. Use a compressor as the end block is retained with a screw.

I found it quite difficult (and somewhat dangerous) to try and replace an R7 spring without a compressor. Very easy with a compressor.

Forgive me for not getting back to you in order to thank all of you for your helpfulness.I had to go pull a little stay in the hospital since they found a blood clot in my broken leg.All is well for now,hopefully,All the more reason to have an air rifle that I can shoot from the porch instead of going out back to my range. I know the HW30s sounds like a nice rifle and I wonder if I would have buyer's remorse by not considering the HW50s as well.Your thoughts?

Well I have an HW50 with a Hawke Panorama scope and weight is 8.4 lbs . I'm very long in the tooth and while I have read others say the cocking effort was difficult but I did not find it bad.

I think HW30 is a very nice/handy gun to start with and if reports I have read about the 30 it may be all the gun you need.

If more gun is needed later the 30 would be very easy to sell. (or the start of a collection)

I purchased both, out of the box the HW30s has a fantastic shot cycle and trigger. I installed a peep sight and it works great with the front globe. Based on the experience with the HW30s I wanted its 12ftlb bigger brother for a scope the, HW50s.

I would not recommend the HW50s *unless* your prepared to open it up soon after purchase and invest another $40-$100 in parts or a kit. My sample was more twangy than the dozens of out of the box Chinese clones I have shot. Now some have said ignore it and shoot it and its fine, I don't doubt that for a minute just because it has a twangy shot cycle does not mean the excellent barrel or trigger are defeated. Its just not the experience of the out of the box HW30s. You really need to have a HW30s or R7, otherwise you may never know what it *can* be like.

After saying that, I'm into my HW50s for around $600 with scope and Vortek kit. I have nothing in spring guns that can touch it for 12ftlbs and do not regret it at all. I still say buy the HW30s though, if you find you want to reach farther then add the HW50s.
