Hw30's Numbers

Curious to know what numbers other members are getting from their HW30's.
Mine is a .177 Home tuned all factory components ....no kit parts.It now has about 800-1000 shots through the barrel since.
Just put it over the Chrony this morning , and this is what I got.
I think it's pretty darn good.Feel free to share your thoughts.

Those are great numbers.
Last time I put her on the chrony I got 600-605 with a JM kit shooting JSB RS/AA Falcons. ES of 5, SD of 1; ES of 8, SD of 2. Quite happy with my results. Going to hate it when I have to open it up again.

Hey Pete,

I ran some more shots through the chrony since my PM and have some slightly different results and an interesting discovery.  After I shot the first group of JSBs I went back and shot a second group using a pellet set that pushed the pellet about 3/32" into the breech.  I found that the velocity dropped by an average of 20 fps.  I'd be interested to see if anyone else can duplicate this.

I'm not going to type out the strings but here's what I got.  Each group was a string of 10 shots.  HW30S with stock spring:

H&N Match Pistol 7.5 gr
High - 654.1
Low - 649.0
Avg - 651.9
Diff - 5.1 fps
SD - 1.7

Meisterkugeln Pistol 7.0 gr
High - 660.9
Low - 654.8
Avg - 658.2

Not an HW30 Petey but an R7. Untuned; never opened. 1300 shots. JSB 7.87 - Shoots them well but not it's favorite pellet:

I just chronyed the 177 which had a pg2 tune by John in PA recently.......I used the JSB 7.87.........was getting 689, 690, 680, 689, 690 yada yada....the pattern at 22 yds was a thing of beauty


The 22 pg2 tuned hw30 with the 12.67 silver bears is getting 580 with little variation....also a beautiful target pattern

I'm jealous....with numbers like that  the 30/r7 would make a great tight woods Squirrel gun.

I have bought and sold and had tuned so many guns..........in the end.......the HW30s on a little steroids (pg2) with a fine tuning (like from John in PA) was the answer to my target/pesting within 40 yds with almost no noise, no tanks, extreme accuracy, best trigger, diminutive size and weight......I just wish thousands of dollars ago I had started with it. If I shot frequently in a place with 40 plus yards, no neighbors yada yada......there are many other choices......but this non-hold sensitive firing characteristics even makes a good target pattern from this old amateur. For those with an acre or less of land, nosey neighbors.....this is a panacea. The key was the development of the pg2 for it......that took the speeds into the pesting realm with ease thus making a small gun, a good gun.

Very True.....Compared to Squirrels rabbits appear as though they are willing to die.

I can't think of a better 1st rifle, you need something like the hw30s, then you can handle the difficult rifle and keep your sanity.

Or just get one and *forget* about everything else

Or one in each caliber--I'm 2/3 of the way there with a .177 and .20--and the numbers Escondido1 posted from his tuned .22 make me want to round out my trio rapidly.

Most certainly a Solid Start to air gunning.  And you will have it for a lifetime......and more.

I sort of "have" an R7 in .177.  It might be out on permanent loan to Nikoman though.     He was supposed to chrony and pellet test it and help break it in, but I think he's becoming addicted to it.   

We chronyed it a few months back and I can't quite remember the numbers but here are some averages more or less:

CPHPs 550 fps

Hobbies 600-605 fps (yea! one that broke 600!)

JSB 8.4 540 fps

It shoots about 5 ftlbs or so and seems a nice tight hold to get best accuracy.

Maybe Nikoman will have more exact figures or the velocities of other pellets he's tried since then.  But I remember we both thought the numbers on the low side for a R7/HW30.  Even so, it can be really accurate and is seeming to prefer JSB 8.4 gr pellets after a good breaking in.  I'd like to test some other quality domed pellets like the lighter 7.9gr and 7.3gr JSBs and some 8.6gr FTTs. 

Seeing the fps/fpe numbers from some of the Vortek-kitted R7s and HW30s, installing a kit in this R7 is sounding really attractive and would hopefully give it some fps boost.

At 580-600 fps I'm more than happy with my stock .177 HW30 but a tuned .22 HW30 sounds kind of cool.
