My HW80 with Tasco World Class 4-16x40mm AO scope and SportsMatch mounts weighs ten pounds even. Cocking effort is 36 pounds on my bathroom scale. It's a great gun, I wouldn't sell it, but it's a handful. My HW30, with a 4x32 scope, just tops 7 pounds. I couldn't get an accurate cocking effort, but it's easier than the 80, by a good margin.

theirs no doubt the R7/HW30  will cock way easier than the R1 its really no comparison between the 2 guns at all other than their made be HW my HW80  has a chopped barrel that's 14 or 15'' long with a delrin MB and un scoped it just under 8lbs, the 30 is a good gun for as small as it is but I don't feel comfortable shooting birds that are starling sized with one more than 25yds away because as I've said their tuff to kill!

go with the inbetween r9 with power closer to the r1 and accuracy and cocking ease near the r7 and lighter than r1, best of both worlds. suggest 20 cal but 177 using ftt,fts and kodiak are very accurate and deadly to small game.

 I devoutly hope that you paid no attention to those suggesting that you get the R-1! Perhaps they just forgot that you are a woman with slighter build and less muscle mass than young men. You would NOT enjoy an R-1!
They are heavy! They are a brute to cock even in comparison with your M-34s. And the short-barreled Karbine version would only exacerbate the cocking effort.

 Conversely the R-7 is the right prescription for your malady. It excels in such duty---and has the accuracy for the job. If a sweeter shooting springer has ever been made no one has stumbled across it. Small wonder then that you see so few used ones for sale. People tend to make keepers of them.

 Powerwise an R-7 will produce energy virtually identical to your 2100 at 10 pumps. Entirely adequate for the duties you envisage when properly applied.      HTH, Tom

The bolded is what I was afraid of. The 34 is about as difficult to cock as I would be interested in shooting. It's not hard for me, but if it was harder, it would be a hassle. Thanks for that input.

I do not own a HW gun, however, I have shot a fully tuned HW50 and I will tell you that I was making amazing groups at 50-60 yards. The trigger is one of the MAIN reason for the accuracy in an HW gun with a Rekord trigger. I say go ahead and get an HW50 and for the heck of it go ahead and tune it if funds allow, you will be a happy happy camper!

Liz, that's kind of like asking, .44 Magnum or .22, LOL!  One is a LOT more gun than the other.  In fact, the R1 is a bit over-volumed for the .177, although there are those who will argue the point.  As said, an R7 would be just adding more levels of decision making when reaching for a gun to whack that starling.  "Let's see.....Diana 35?  No.........124?  Maybe,........OK, the R7.  Aw, shucks, now where'd he go?"

Forgot to mention that Vortex has a new kit for the R7/HW30 I have shot it and man is it sweet. A tad more power and the smoothest shot cycle  you could ask for, from a springer. Was very easy to cock.

My friend just purchased a R9 and I was very impressed with it's accuracy right out of the box. Shooting off the bench it competed with my RWS 54. Great gun for the money and not too powerful to become overly hold sensitive.

All good suggestions and I agree with everything posted for the most part. Now allow me to toss the proverbial 'wrench on the cogs'. For your intended use on sparrows and starlings, why not go a different route such as a single stroke pneumatic like an older FWB 600 or something in the same class where accuracy rules supreme. Although they are ten meter mid 500 fps shooters, do you think you need much more power when you aiming at a head shot!?!?! You can scope them too. Now the flip side is they are heavier, but as Nathan pointed out, weigh can and will help steady the rifle. A true match trigger is nothing like you've ever experienced before in any springer. And the added advantage of a fully adjustable stock makes them "fit like a glove". Yeah when you bust a sparrow at 25/30 yards with a precisly placed head shot, with a 7 grainned wad-cutter,.....well that's something to be proud of. Just something to think about mind you

The r9 is one of my favorites. It doesn't have the power of some of my other airguns, but it's easy to carry and sweet shooting. It also has plenty of power for sparrows and pigeons.

That is the very reason the R9 is such a sweet gun, the fact that it is not too powerful. Once a springer becomes magnum rated they are too powerful to be accurate. And they become unenjoyable and frustrating to shoot. The R9 is a perfect balance of power, accuracy, and value.

I put my vote in for the R7.
Never fired one (outside a store) but they are one of the smoothest, sweetest shooters I have ever felt from the single shot I took inside a store (into a pellet trap of course). That was many years ago and I still remember it.
