Between and R1 or an R7.....

Which one would you choose, and why?
I'm thinking I would really like to have one or the other- actually, I'd like to have both, but if you had to choose between the two, which one would it be?

I'd go with the R7 myself. I shoot it a LOT more than my HW80, aka R1. For me personally, I find the R1 a bit long overall. I wish I had a shorter, carbine barrel on mine. That said, the R7 is a bit small for me, but its so easy to cock, I end up shooting it frequently at my spinners and other targets off the back porch.
Now, for serious hunting, I might opt for the R1 over the R7, as the R7 can't be used on larger-sized quarry, where good power is needed for a clean kill.
Either one has a great trigger, very nice shape, and is well built. I'd get both and then sell off one if you don't like it, though I doubt that'd be the case!

Only had the R9 and HW30. The 30 is still here. Just way more fun to play with all day long. Now if you need power then the 9 may be the way to go.

Unless you hunt, the R7/30S hands down is the choice. Hunting, the R1/80 in .22 shines.

The only killing I do is sparrows and starlings at 75-100 feet, so would the R7 do? I kind of like the idea of smaller. What's the gneneral velocity for the R7?

I grab the R7 probably 60%-70% of the time I shoot.
Easy to cock, quiet and super accurate.
They shoot about 620-650fps with 7-8gr. pellets. Not a powerhouse, but more than enough for small game inside of 30 yards.
Good luck choosing.

R7 all the way. From what i've heard, it is the "perfect" springer, very smooth, easy cocking, no hold sensitivity, low velocities, 9FPE of power.

I have to choose one
Well for me it would be the r1 in .22 for hunting at greater distance than my .177 r9
If my quarry would come up to my porch or closer than 30 yds the r7/ hw30 is heralded as
fun and accurate.
Aoa has an hw 30 in their used section right now for 225

most R7/HW30's 0nly shoot mid/hi 5's with 7.9gr pellets out of the box and starlings are pretty tuff birds to kill! I'm not sayin a 30 won't do the job but IMO I'd want a little more power for a clean kill unless your able to consistently make a head shot with a lowered powered gun at 30yds or less! I have a friend who has a pest control business and I have gone out with him into business to do bird shoots inside of places where they make feed type food for animals and believe me when I tell you I've had allot of trigger time with various low powered guns shooting all types of birds mainly sparrows and starlings and pigeons, and I used a detuned R9 in .177cal @ 650fps that was accurate as I could shoot it! and I had allot of fly offs unless it was a head shot! especially if it was a starling or bigger bird! IMO a lowered powered 22cal in the 650 to 700fps range is a much better choice for the shooting the range's your shooting, I've taken many crows and pigeons sized birds with a gun that shoot in this range out to 65 and 75yds with one shot kills and at 30yds with my HW95 that shoots 640fps with 14.3gr CPHP's on crows and pigeons I don't get a pass thru but I get a dead bird! cause the pellet uses all it energy, IMO and HW50's would be better suited in .177cal or .22cal for what your doing JMO, the HW80 I have posted for sale shoots in the 665 to 700fps range and its a custom carbine it would be a good choice for what your doing but its a bigger gun than a R7 but it'll handle your pest problems much better than an a R7 JMO

hey-Hey!!!,
Given your target, I'd want 16-18 FPE. That puts R7 out of the running. It would be R1 w/no questions if there was to be any hunting. That said, I'd probably just tune down my RX2...if for some reason I felt like playing with it( and that day is comming ).
cheers,
Douglas

I have both, the R7(HW30) is more fun to shoot, easy to cock and carry, and extremely accurate. The R1(HW80) is heavy and harder to cock, but mine still makes 16+ FPE and puts pellets right where you point it, 1/2" groups at 30 yards are easy. I bought both of these guns in the mid 80's, and both still have their original springs and seals. Both are good choices, in your case I'd probably go for the R7. Mine still shoots CPHP's at 640 fps, adequite for your purposes with good shot placement.

Easy.
Take what you would spend on the R1
Go get the R7 and a Benji 392. Clean the paint out of the end of the 392 bbl, and polish the trigger.
15 ftlb gun with good accuracy to 50 yds---392--for when you need power on tap.
R-7 for fun plinking.
God bless,
Farmer

While the R-7 would be capable of pesting your intended targets at your specified range, the bigger question I think is would you be more comfortable with the smaller lighter gun or the longer heavier one? The extra weight and length of the R-1 might make it more tiring for longer shooting sessions. The extra weight will help with the recoil and firing behavior, though.
Why not look at a R-1/HW-80 carbine, so you'll get a more compact rifle. I think Mark made some real good points.

Lizzie,
I devoutly hope that you paid no attention to those suggesting that you get the R-1! Perhaps they just forgot that you are a woman with slighter build and less muscle mass than young men. You would NOT enjoy an R-1!
They are heavy! They are a brute to cock even in comparison with your M-34s. And the short-barreled Karbine version would only exacerbate the cocking effort.
Conversely the R-7 is the right prescription for your malady. It excels in such duty---and has the accuracy for the job. If a sweeter shooting springer has ever been made no one has stumbled across it. Small wonder then that you see so few used ones for sale. People tend to make keepers of them.
Powerwise an R-7 will produce energy virtually identical to your 2100 at 10 pumps. Entirely adequate for the duties you envisage when properly applied. HTH, Tom

Tom I have to disagree with you my HW80 weighs a tic under 8lbs same weight as a 34 and it doesn't have a full power kit in it so it cocks about the same as a 34 as well! and its not a brute in anyway!

I know its always more fun to get a new gun, but I think you might already have what you are looking for in your FWB124. Its as easy to cock as an R7, but has the power and size more like a detuned R9. While the triggers not a Rekord, I find it to be very good and at least on par with a Diana trigger.
Sorry my idea isn't the most "fun".
