Dead Pest of the Day

 Well today I sat in the golf truck 25 yards from the G-hog hole, and ate my lunch and watched as a furry head wold pop out now and then, I have been spotting it during the week while working in the area, so it was getting used to commotion in the area. 
 
 
 I finished my lunch and picked up the GK1 and watched closer through the scope, when I thought I had a shot I took it but must of shot over  .  I waited and a few minutes later it poped out again, even further out of the hole. I took aim and hit low in the dirt right in front of it cloud of dust it was gone. 


 I wait a good five minutes and get my third chance, now I have a clue where I need to aim, At the G-hog Dummy! LOL
This time I anchor it in the hole, no cleanup needed


 The moral of this story is a Rocker LDC makes a 45 fpe .22 GK1, so quiet a G-hog gives a bad shot a few do overs

James! That's a funny stalk, wait and shoot! These PCP's when hushed properly sure do give us shooters more opportunities than we deserve....😂👍. Great patience and a super shot that anchored it! Nice photos!

 James ,Congrats! Wish I could say I got mine in the hole like that. I saw one peeking out of a hole late this afternoon at the main farm on the way home. I took
 aim under it's eye for the angle it presented for a CNS hit & eased the trigger on the R10. I heard a loud twack like a hit and it disappeared back into the hole .
 I walked the 35 yrds to the hole ,which was off to the side of an old concrete slab and found nothing, no blood, hair ,nothing . I went back to the shooting spot
 and took the same rest and found a good mark for a target on the slab , took two shots & nailed it both times!!  Just a clean miss. Guess that just keeps me 
 humble  .

 Well today I was killing time after work cruising around the buildings looking for pest of opportunity and plinking. Sunny 70's today so wepon of choice was the Umarex Canex . . . Yup LOL this one Can shoot, 10.3gr AA lights out to 30+ yards    I managed 2 Hosp, and 2 starlings, the YB's were30 and 35 yard shots DRT    . I was doubtful of this rifle from the mixed reviews  Last YB was shot #16 off a fresh CO2 fill
 Then I spotted a Turkey hen with a Tom out in the neighbors field some 500 yards out, I got the Serpent out, tried to set up some decoys and call him in but he was up to something else I guess LOL. Tomorrow is all day turkey stalking

First blood for the Flash-R!  I didn’t sleep last night and about 0500 I got the Flash and a tin of JSB Kings and sat up on the gun deck.  I was feeling murderous when about 0700 a big fat male gray started down the “gauntlet”.  This is the back tree line that separates my property from the field behind us.  The gauntlet has claimed many a nutter and today this squirrel’s ticket got punched.  I saw him moving from branch to branch and slipped a pellet onto the loading tray.  I was seated in my lawn chair but even though I had just installed a bipod on this gun there was no handy spot to rest the gun for this shot.  So I took it from the seated unsupported position.  Range was about 25 yards.  I was a little shaky for a head shot so I opted for the boiler room.  I got a clean through and through right behind his shoulders. Slap through the vitals.  Sounded like I hit him with a baseball bat.  Knocked him clean off the tree.  He picked himself up at the bottom of the tree and started back up.  He got about six feet before the news got through to his brain that he was dead.  I tracked another of his buddies through the dense foliage but didn’t get a shot.

I can hear another one squawking in the thicket.  If it comes out where I can see it I’ll arrange for it to join it’s buddy.

Thanks folks.  I shot some twenty and thirty yard groups with this gun yesterday and it lives up to the reputation that the smaller calibers are getting for accuracy.  I didn't have any fresh targets so I drug out a "new" campaign sign and shot it.  One group of five stacked in one hole at twenty yards.  I'd post pictures but I'm afraid someone might see it as a political statement LOL!

 I had the Umarex Canex #1 out for a warm weather test run, this one will need a rebuild, but I still managed to get this YB to go away. #2 U-Canex is a good shooting example of the rifle IMO, just no rapid fire mag dumps, just enjoy the lack of needing to cock it

I have a question about slugs vs pellets; are they better in terms of humane kills? I haven't used them yet because their lack of penetration on wood targets makes me wonder if they're a good idea. My experience shows them to be less accurate in general for the ones I have, as well. I've been using 2 different hollowpoints for targets in evaluation, a pair of 24 grains. One from Brazil and one from the US. I even got ricochets from plywood at 25', which wasn't encouraging.

 Slugs need to be matched to the barrel size and their weight to the rifle, alot of trial and error, they do buck the wind, and deliver more energy on target.  Past 40 yards is where a slug can be a benefit, 40 and under not a big difference. I find wadcutters to be the deadliest 40 and in.

I can see them carrying a lot more kinetic energy at range than my beloved .177, so this makes sense. I have no reservations with standard pellet variations from flat to pointed match, and of course, my beloved alloys. I'll probably burn off the slugs in tertiary silliness and not buy them again. They seem to have a BIG problem with proper packaging and many have distorted skirts. They have a tiny skirt profile so every little bit is important.

 BBB, I agree w/ James as far as slugs. The benefits (usually) don't come out until you reach longer ranges or windy conditions for target work and the quarry is
 larger, ie, Ghogs etc. As far as .22s, I really don't see much difference in killing effect under 60 yards on Ghogs. I'm sticking w/ .25 pellets for a bit this season.

 I went out later this afternoon for a bit of pigeon harassment . I took five off the silo, recovering only one. Two fell into the silo, one died on top & never fell off,
 one took the long final glide to the tall weeds. I took a starling that landed at 16yrd.s in the woods while watching the silo. While looking for the downed pigeon
 I spied a Ghog on the edge of the  deck of the unoccupied house. I ranged it at 48yrd.s , so I set the trigger sticks bipod up ,held on it's head & squeezed the
 Bullshark's trigger. A clean miss!  Oh well , another day!

Pesting has been slow around my place lately.
I eliminated most of the chipmunks last month.
The last one that I shot, was out by the wood pile.
It was a 30 yard shot with the .177 cal. Stoeger S3000C rifle.
The pellet of choice for that rifle is Crosman 7.4 gr. pointed pellets.
