Here's pics of the new 34 I picked up from the PO today. It has a scope mounting system that I've never used before. Is this what is called a UTG mount, or is it something else? Or is UTG a brand name? Is there anything special I need to know about putting a scope on this rifle?
I was pleasantly surprised at the great condition of this gun externally- haven't shot her yet. She looks even better than in the pix I saw which prompted me to buy. The gun looks rarely used.

It's stamped "Made in West Germany" and dated 08 91.

To Me that looks like a riser for a bigger scope...But I could be wrong.

sorry ,i don't know about the scope mount, maybe its as old as the gun. i'm not sure that is a manufacturing date though. maybe some sort of other proof mark.....mine has no date. . i bought it in 1990 and it says "made in Germany" no date, but west germany became germany in 1990 so your's probably pre-dates that unless it was older parts being used up(common).
no matter what though, its a great gun. good luck picking a scope. lots of choices and lots of scope snobbery , i'm in the process of getting my first, i dont like them.

Well, it looks like either *08 91* or *08 81*, but I don't think RWS and Diana had merged at that point, had they? It appears to be a manufacturing date stamp, as it is in the same place as the one on my late 70's 35, with smaller date stamping than the country of origin stamp.

As for scopes- I'm no scope snob at all. I came across an old Bushnell that I may try on it, which was likely made around the same time as the gun- maybe a little older. From what I understand, the Bushnell's hold up well to the recoil of springers. If this one doesn't, I'll prob just buy a Leapers.

where is the # stamped? maybe i just cant see the darn thing.
i been looking around the web and found a lot of people had *07 07* even though some guns were bought before 07 and after 07.
i was hoping to find a place where we could look up the serial # but haven't found it.

In the third picture down, you should be able to faintly see where "Made in West Germany" is stamped. The date stamp is to the right of that- right above the space where wood meets steel- it's very small and I have to use a magnifying glass to see it, and even then, it's hard to tell for sure what the numbers are, lol.

This gun reminds me so much of my old 35 that it's just uncanny.

I'm anxious to see if it shoots the same and is such fun.

found it! 08 93 above the trigger. since i know i bought it in 1990 i will assume these are not date of manufacture

That looks like the base (but the rings are missing) of an older style RWS C-mount.

Diana and RWS never merged. The rifles are manufactured by Diana Meyer & Grammelspacher GmbH. (Dynamit Nobel) RWS is a chemical and weapons company that exports/markets the Diana line.

Congrats on the arrival of your new 34. I'm surprised you could resist the temptation to not fire any test shots, even without a scope or iron sights. I know I would have tried it out and just fired just by looking down the barrel. I definitely like the looks of the older Diana guns. Its too bad it doesn't seem to have the sights with it, but having a scope mount already is definitely a plus. Looking forward to your future reviews and experiences with it. I think you are going to have a blast!

Thanks HNT5 for the information and correction about the history of RWS/Diana. I thought that since they have their name stamped on the guns, they were involved in the manufacturing process.

I guess if the rings are missing from the mount (assuming it's not something that is universally available), I need to remove this mount and just go with a one-piece mount? Is that what you guys would tend to do?

That looks like an earlier version of the C-mount from the brass colored inserts. Finding the correct rings could be an issue. I would just take it off (you can hold on to it if you'd like maybe some one will be looking for one on the classifieds one day )and use the UTG base.

That will compensate for any barrel droop that I'm sure your older M34 will have. Get some MEDIUM (not high) height Weaver rings or it may put you in an uncomfortable "heads up" shooting position, by virtue of the lowish cheek piece. I have used the Weaver medium mounts available @ Wal-Mart for ~$8 with good results. I wouldn't worry about the scope objective clearing, the UTG base + medium rings will give you plenty of clearence for scopes past 44mm.

This is a droop compensated scope mount for the RWS34, some call it a canted weaver/picatinny rail. Since most scopes don't have enough elevation to compensate for the barrel droop on most 34's. I use one on my 34 and it works great. Of course you need Weaver/picatinny scope rings to mount your scope onto this weaver style scope mount.

Any scope rings that mounts to weaver/picatinny base should work, I use the weaver top mount, detachable rings http://swfa.com/Weaver-Detachable-Top-Mount-30mm-Rings-P10408.aspx They are the lowest rings available and have the lowest profile available.

If you use the UTG 11mm to weaver/picatinny rail, will need to use a low height scope ring to keep the scope from being to high for a good cheek weld.

The stop pin hole is too shallow and will wallow out, I suggest you drill it to a deeper dept if you go that route!. The big screw head is not a stop, if you brace 11mm dovetail rings against it, they will simply knock the screw head off of the rifle.

There's lots a good choice's for mounting a scope to your 34, do some research and use a good stop or your scope will move every shot.
