Charlie,To repeat the obvious; a foam sleeve occupies volume. If the tube ID is on the small side, and the foam is closed cell, then placing it inside the tube will help by "cushioning", but hurt (probably more) by reducing air expansion volume. So, internal foam should be low density open cell, and not very thick.Something such as this, perhaps: https://www.mcmaster.com/8614K81/
Is there a thread that where all these wonderful things are explained in "beginner " language, please? I am a very recent convert to the "Joy of Air Shooting" and I would dearly like to understand what you folks are talking about. The clear thing is that you're discussing a silencer (or two or three) that quiets down the pop from our "toy of choice" and makes it neighbor friendly. I have two Benji's, a Prowler and a Vaporizer, both in 22 cal. I would like to tone down the pop!!! but don't even know if that's possible.
