Those dark areas are not really there. Poor camera lighting.

Oh yeah.... If the first coat of Tung Oil is any indication this thing is going to darken up nicely.
As I said before... I don't like the glossy shiny finishes. Leave that for household furniture. These are guns man.
So I'm only going for 3 or 4 coats.
Rob.. if you like the shiny you can add more coats. There won't be anything on top of the Tung Oil.

These things have incredible character. This one is almost taking on a 3D affect.
Thanks Bob.

Bob, what's your opinion of Chestnut? I picked up a sample can for a buck this morning and it more than enough to do more than one gun.

So much of the result depends on the wood it is applied to.... Looking at the MinWax Stain colour chart, English Chestnut looks a bit "greyer" than some, not my choice.... "Provincial" looks about the same shade, but brown, not greyish.... and not quite as dark as Special Walnut....
BTW, I am partially colourblind, so why are you asking me?.... *LOL*....

What? No spreadsheet? lol
Yeah, it's a bit lighter and less red than the Walnut. More brownish. I may give it a shot on mine.
Thanks

That looks awesome Bill. Wow!!! A lot more grain and character was hiding under that ugly Crosman stain job. I'm not a fan of the glossy finish. Especially, on a beater Sears 1400. Though the title of beater may need to be removed now that the stock looks as good as the rest of the rifle. It's gone from this:
To this:
Original thread of my 1400:
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=113534.msg1088058#msg1088058
Somehow Bill done and decided to heist this thread of yours, Bob. Lol
Now, I'm looking forward to that K4 Decker has sent to me. I was debating on what to put it on. But, not gonna get my hopes up. I've said to Bill and I'll repeat if his doesn't turn out as good as mine. Just keep mine and send me yours.

I'm thinking one more application of Tung Oil ought to do it....

Thanks Bob.. I was a little worried about the level of red but it really pops that grain. This thing really shows some beautiful character. Very happy with the results... like I said, I think one more coat of Tung Oil.

That looks incredible Bill. It's gonna look real nice against the black metal. I'm getting excited the scope came yesterday, definitely going on this. Just got a couple 2100 and was gonna throw it on one of them, but I'll wait.

That last one looks about the same shade as the Minwax oil stain #231, " Gunstock" and Tru-Oil I used on my 160. The Elm they used back then sure has beautiful grain figuring!
