As someone mention, that wood has sone nice grain and looks like it matches up to the forearm really well. I bet just a finish of straight Tru-oil or Tung-oil would pop with a flat black on the metal.

I was going to post the same thing, 'til I scrolled down to your post . all that stock needs is to remove the old finish, and a bunch of tru oil.
That's funny, I picked up a rust bucket project sears model 1400 yesterday as well... pictures later today or tomorrow but I'll make my own post...

I sure hate to see good hardware abused like that! I'd love to get my hands on one of those Sears 1400s with scope grooves. That scope looks like a Weaver B4? I have a B4 on one of my 114s, it's a tack-driver. Looking forward to seeing your progress with this gun.
