The “ other 880 “ Winchester 1977xs

Well I am pleased to say that my daisy flat nose pellets showed up today. Thank you amazon. Most of the pellets I get are from amazon to be honest. And happily, the daisy hollow points, flat nose and winchester domes I got were all from Spain.  My 880 seems to love any pellet you give it, the winnie is a little more picky and my week old 901 seems to be the most fussy. That may change when I get a little more lead in the barrel. 

On to the winnie, mine really seemed to lighten up the pumping load after I gave the square slides a good dose of the 30wt ND oil.  If anyone still has an issue try that. No ideas why they went square with more pimping force, but the gun is truly a treasure in my fairly new airgun arsenal.

My winnie would shoot lights out with the JSB exact diabolo 8.44's.  My crosman f4 nitro piston loves the h&n baracuda hunter extremes. So my next move will be to see if the winnie likes them since they are heavier and your chrono made notice this gun still has the velocity to accommodate said round. I will rezero the 880 with the flat nose and see if the 901 will accept them as well.  Then regardless of which I hunt with, I need only concern myself with 2 tins of pellets.

I see some of you are half the country away from me, I wish we were closer and could do some pump gun hunting together. That would be a riot.

Leonard, those daisy flatnose pellets shoot extremely accurate in every 880 I own, plus now the Winchester.
I thought crosman piranahs were going to shoot in the Winnie, but so far, the daisy is the only one that’s held up in it.

Is it just me, or has anybody else noticed the lack of sideplay in the trigger on the 1977 compared to the 880?
Can’t wait to get this one to the 50 yd. line from the bench.

There doesn't seem to be many 1977XS rifles around.....
Only 1 on the bay.
most places report out of stock..........
dick's shows inventory, but I don't trust them.
Academy has 77XS........bur I haven't found 1977's there...........
Guess I really lucked into mine.

I said I wanted pump head assy and guide rods...she said they were the same as 880
I said nope..it was a new gun.............(again...)
Amber said no parts for the 1977 and was gona offer me her list of gunsmiths........

They may have sold out already though?

Yeah, daisy was supposed to get back to me TWICE already, still have’nt heard back from them.
This is weird. Got me thinking of picking up another one for a parts gun if they’re not going to support it?
I guess this is going to be a “wait and see” type thing.

Okay, just got off the phone with daisy. Lady said they just got an email telling them the internal parts are all 880, except the pump head and the abutment.
Of course some of us that have them know of a few other differences, such as the pump handle is beefed up and the square nylon wheels.
She also said they were told all 880 parts would interchange, such as pump head, etc., but would lower velocity.... duh.

I was told as far as she knew, it was to be continued in production and parts should become available.
Still could’nt find out when the first ones were put on the market, but it DOES sound like it’s here to stay!
I guess daisy was testing the waters before they let the tech department know the new gun was different.
Kind of a weird way to introduce a new model.....no advertising lol!

Anyway, this new 1977 is a winner in my book.

Academy website lists as Win 77XS but 1000fps.....
Stores have 1977xs....D'Iberville has 1 (grrrrr.we ate right next door to that one last eve..)
and Gulfport has 4..................

Hesitant to order online cuz of ambiguity in listing. But............

You can buy from Academy Sports online and they will ship to you free.
The website gives the model as 77XS, but specs 1000fps.
All the stores have the 1977XS, so I'd bet that is what they have on line,too.

I received my 77xs today.
First inspection seems to indicate that the pump tube has come off the valve body.
didn't open it up yet as I have injured a finger.................

Hhhhmmmm, I like this 1977 version enough to pick up another new one just to have as a parts gun for now, till they come out with the parts for them.
Later on I could put a dot sight on one, scope the other, or leave one iron sights, or....... lol just hang on to the one I have!

My 1977XS came with high rise see-through scope mounts and an unmarked 4x32 scope. Lenses could be better, but not bad. Looks like a Centerpoint clone to me? Might swap in a Winchester 4x32AO scope? Made a bit better. It even says 1977XS on the box, along with 1000FPS and all.



  And I'm still leaning toward the first four digits of the serial number, 0519 meaning May 2019. Makes sense to me. Just like the GuideHawk NP .177 & .22's. Limited production run in 2016. Never found the .22 model? And the serial number in the same place under the barrel where Daisy always stamps it. Except in gold digits!? Only about 4lbs or so with the scope. Still rather light. But amazingly easy to steady with the thumbhole stock. Overall, it looks to me like a Marlin stealth lever action. This makes 4 Winchester branded rifles in my collection. They are very eclectic in what style of rifles they produce since Daisy bought the rights to the name/logo.

This morning I opened up the 77XS which I purchased "needing seals."
Seals are fine.
Definitely an 880 inside.
The pump tube had somehow worked its way past the dimple on the frame designed to prevent just this occurrence.
So, I cleaned everything up and reassembled after making the dimple a bit deeper.
Also removed the flat spring on the trigger.
Went together without a hitch.........well, not exactly.
The safety had popped out of the trigger guard and parts went flying.
Found them and re-reassembled and all was well..........well........
I had dropped and forgot the BB loading port door............grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Disassembled.......again,as carefully as I could, and STILL, the @$#%*^*$ safety popped out...AGAIN !
This time, the spring and detent ball found the black hole, where they landed silently on the pile of lost socks.....
So, after a trip to the parts bin, new safety parts installed ans re-re-reassembled (again?)
SUCCESS........at least it's all there and ir pumps and shoots.....

I've known the feeling. Especially with the likes of the 760's. Fling doing da****! you need like 3 or 4 hands to hold everything in place to put the receiver halves back together. I'm glad the 1977XS is new! Can't be more than 4lbs with the 4x32 scope? Light and steady with the thumbhole. God, I wish I could get out shooting nearby. Now that I learned there's a particular sequence to getting these 799/880/1977XS's to be able to pump, I can tell more precisely what condition their condition is in.

So now,( “we know the rest of the story”).
The 1977 IS a beefed up 880, and does use SOME different parts, such as flat head piston, no elastomer spring, different abutment(according to daisy), and the pump assembly runs on big nylon square wheels.
It does shoot 800fps. or faster with lead pellets.

There SHOULD be parts diagrams and parts available from Daisy in the future.
In the meantime(according to what I was told by Daisy), all 880 parts can be used, but some of them will lower the FPS., such as round wheels, elastomer spring piston head, and abutment. I think you can add the 880 trigger spring to that list too. The 1977 spring seems stiffer to me, but not sure on that one.
Does that about sum it up guys and gals?

One of you guys needs to do a review in the air rifle review gate here on this one.... not everyone reads the daisy gate.
Might help to cut down on some of the confusion on this new model 1977 Winchester.

If this gun holds up to the pressure level it runs at , I predict a big time winner for daisy!

Leonard, you mentioned putting a Winchester 4x32 AO scope on yours... that’s what I have on mine now. Balances great with just a bit more weight.

Is it just me, or would a 22 version of this rifle be great? Maybe 650, 700 FPS. With 14.3 gr.?meehhh, make it 750 FPS. stock!

Ron, i’ve Chased more of those safety springs and ball bearings than I care to admit lol. I use a big freezer bag to do all that in now.... that solved it..... so far.
