Robert, I still sharpen with files, way better, less complicated and really faster as far I know. No offense taken, Carter. I’m a novice at felling trees compared to your service job. I’ve probably been more lucky than skilled at not dropping a tree where I didn’t intend to. I got most of it cut up, except the trunk. I still have some brush to dump and burn. But, yesterday was a good day. Now, I have better access to the freshwater well. I want to put a windmill on top of it with a pump and a shaft-disconnect. I have a smaller square stone well about 8-10 feet away that I want a cast iron hand pump on top. Today, I’m working for the man… like a tool.

Kris a scissor jack failed on me once but was my fault as I went too high with it but I wasn't harmed since the car rested on the jack stand. No donuts for me either I just can't stand them.

John congrats that looks good! I did tree cutting myself today. Had to make room cutting saplings to gain access near sumac to dig and pull them up. Some of those roots go 7ft across. Fun pulling those up I can tell you!

Sam I'll remember that advice as I've seen people cutting that way it works well.

Took mom for a long boat ride today.  I had to keep the RPMs under 1500 for the initial part of the break in period for the new outboard.  We went up river about eight miles til we pretty much ran out of water.  Then we turned around and came home.  The wild Azelia was blooming along with the fringe trees and a lot of exotics in people's yards so it smelled wonderful!  Then I took her to the Canoe Club dinner in town.  I hung out with a bunch of people who I hadn't seen in forty years and then we came home again.  I'm beat but the memsahib says that I am a good son and I acquire merit.

You are a good son!  I'm going to visit my mom and pops tomorrow and have some lunch with them.  It should be a good time.

The usual.  I spent the day avoiding responsibility, manual labor, and the boss.  Mostly successfully.  I came in late so all the wheels were snagged by the time I got there.

I ended up patrolling the picnic area on my adult tricycle.

 I saw a post on the local Facebook page from a women that lives 9.4 miles from us that has a John Deere Lawn tractor that needed it fixed, asking if anyone knew someone that could fix it. It just sounded like the deck belt came off, so I volunteered to have a look at it. I put together a tool box of just what I might need, drove up and quickly confirmed that was indeed the problem. She asked me if I would come back up and put a new belt on it after she gets one. I agreed and then came back home, sat on the porch swing with my wife for a while watching the Humming birds. Then my wife and I went out for Pizza.

Today I made up a spreadsheet on our fuel oil consumption.    From 1988 to 2023 we used 18,001.7 gallons of fuel oil for heat and hot water.  Average cost per gallon was $1.87.   Total cost for 35 years of heat and hot water was $33,752.92 .   Per year it's 514.3 gallons and $964.37 for heat and hot water.   Fuel oil is going up and the cost is heavily weighted towards 2008 to present.   I don't think we'll ever be paying less than $400 a year again.  514 gallons of fuel oil would have run my old Mercedes 300CD diesel 12-15,000 miles.

  I have worked on the small John Deere lawn tractors a lot. So the tool kit/box I took just had what I already knew I would need. I could have used a 15mm socket that I didn't think to bring though.

 I started by just pulling the 7 clips that hold it to the hanging mounts, and pulling the deck out from under it so I could see what was going on, that makes it easy! It needs a new set of blades too, one blade is split on one end and bent.

  When I go back I will take my sockets and cordless impact too, put the new blades and belt on and put the deck back on the lawn tractor.

We have a major snow storm in progress right now.
It has been snowing all day and will snow all night.
I am expecting up to 17 inches of snow by tomorrow morning.
Later on this evening, I am going out and clear the driveway.

On any mower like that I lube the pins and their mounts because rusted will make your life he|| getting them out.

I'm pleased that we only got about 1 inch of sleety snow.   Most of it already melted.   Rest should be gone tomorrow.   But that doesn't mean we  can't get slammed with a foot or more of late season snow.

Right now there is some snow 6 miles east of us according to the radar map. It is 49°F at my place, but feels a lot colder with a wind coming from the east off the snowy hills. There are clouds in the way so the hills can't be seen from here currently.
