Woke up at 5:30, fed the dogs and let them out and made coffee. I sat drinking coffee and monitoring the security cams. Daylight came and the weatherman told me it was in the low 70's out.. headed for mid 90's by early afternoon.
I've been planning the next 3 or 4 trees that I wanted to drop and chop for the past couple days.
I couldn't resist the urge so out I went.
The first 2 came right down exactly where I planned. Not so much for the 3rd... it had a nasty lean towards the Red Shed. But I'm a self taught mountain man having taken a recent crash course.
I pulled the Rancher up next to it and stood on the box to tie a rope as high as I could reach. Backed the wheeler off and went around another tree in the direction I want the tree to land. Then tied to the front of the wheeler.
I cut the notch in the front of the tree then the hinge cut in the back until I saw a bit of tension on the rope. Jumped on the wheeler and backed it up. The tree landed perfectly.
I cut 35 2' logs out of that tree with the largest 8" in diameter.
I then logged up the other 2 trees and a half one I had left from the other day. Betty Lou soon joined me and we moved all the logs to the stack with the yard wagon.

I have about 5 more to drop on that side of the Red Shed before I move to the next area behind the shed where there are maybe 3 more. One of the 5 takes a hard bend right over the top of the Red Shed. That one will also take some roping assistance.
After those 2 areas are done I will move to the front of the Red Shed. I saved this area for last because the trees are bigger and more precariously situated. I figured I would practice with the easy stuff and build confidence.

I also left a 2 to 3 foot stump on all these trees that I will need to go back and cut close to the ground. Then I'll work on grinding, killing and burning them out.

I installed a new stereo with back up camera and wireless car play connect in the 2004 Toyota Sienna.  It was tedious but we got it done.  It's such a nice upgrade to have.

Good job, I am reluctant to swap out the stereo in my Dodge RAM because the stereo is really excellent, so I just went with a smaller portable backup camera screen. I am not sure what option I would have for the truck. I would like the better in dash screen though, and the integrated hands free would be nice too.   




I went to Jury Duty for a short day, done at noon.

I pulled over many good size trees by tying a rope up high and pulling with a come-along.   I cut the roots as they appear and eventually the whole tree and stump comes out.   It's hard work but you get the stump out at the same time.   I wouldn't do it as an old man but if you are young and full of energy it's a fine workout.   A grub-axe and shovel will be used a lot.  Pine trees are easy.   Sandy soil would make it trivially  easy.   Most people would not believe the size of stumps I've pulled by hand with that technique.   Very satisfying work.

Cut down 2.5 trees. Actually would equal one normal midsize tree. These are only about 7' tall and about 3-4 inches in diameter. Juniper trees grow very very slow. I have a couple of trees on my property are probably over a 100 years old or more and are around 30 feet tall. They've got the root system to survive the differences in the amount of rain we get. First summer up here was extremely dry. Last summer was extremely wet with lots of rain. The stock pond I drive past going to the paved road was completely dry that first year but then the next year filled up to I'd estimate was 20-30 feet deep. It ended up looking like a small lake not a pond.

That's what I've done on a lot of trees just not where I live now. Another fun thing to do is pull out creasol bushes. If the ground isn't wet you just plane can't get them out.

Yep.   Sittin' around the stump campfire or brutal hard labor.   Hmmm, tough decision.   I amazed at how I could go from a limitlessly energetic young man to a lazy old f-rt in a few decades.

That's what I've done on a lot of trees just not where I live now. Another fun thing to do is pull out creasol bushes. If the ground isn't wet you just plane can't get them out.

Or you can just yank them out with a chain and a truck if you're lucky.

Congrats Brett! I'd like to do that as well but I dread thinking about the install and I don't really need it. Installing a replacement display screen was trouble enough for me and that was actually easy.

Sam remember when everyone called them flashers back in the day and parents were paranoid about them being around their kids in parks? Now they're called something else and get police protection when exposing themselves to kids in parades at their parent's pleasure.

1.  Returned some books to the library.

2.  Picked up some forms to renew next years SS $tuff.

3.  Went to Dr. and scheduled an Upper GI Endoscopy for next Thursday.

4.  Went to Walmart to pick up a Call In order.

5.  Went to lunch at Hong Kong Buffet with current, and last, wife.

6.  Came home, unloaded car and plopped in front of TV to watch U.S. Open.

7.  Its 96° with a heat index of 112° so, there will be no shooting this afternoon.

That's about it for today.  What did you do?

I mowed for 2 or 3 hours in the 94 degree high humidity afternoon.   That temp might be no big deal to you southern boys but it's pretty hot for NH.   I'm ready to shovel snow in shorts and sandals when it's 25 out.   I think the heat and humidity is good for my bad knees and hip though.  I'm surprised that those old joints held out as long as they did today.

My wife loves it.  Where is the Dragon Buffet?  There used to be a place in Tyler, Chings, that was excellent.  There Kung Pao Chicken was to die for.  Alas.
