Bought a new to me car last week so today is laundry, take the lill monster trick or treating, then go back to the dealer and finnaly get my s10 back home. It's been bugging me sitting there for a week while I had no way to go get it.

Used the blower to clear leaves off the roof, gutters and then the driveway, patio, small area of grass.  Sat with Mrs.P for few minutes before heading in to work a little early to relieve the day crew.  Cleared a few large branches from some lines, inspected and reenergized then to get the power back on.  Surfing the web currently trying to not spend any money on airguns and knives.

Since it is early today, I'll metnion what I did yesterday.

We Started the day heading to big-box stores to buy material for some construction of a modular pump house for the well on our property 2 hours west.  Since it's the foothills, the season seems to be 2 to 3 weeks "ahead" up there, and thoughts it's a deep well (200+ feet submersible) we're not gambling with any risk of freeze-ruptures.  I tend to build durable, so pea-gravel and a treated lumber base, T-111 for the "sides", and 2x4 typical construction otherwise.  Polycarbonate roofing in white; it will be insulated but we'll keep a small incandescent bulb on for some extra heat during the coldest months. 

We transplanted a bunch of hostas, some ferns, and while doing so, I found some poison ivy so it went bye-bye.  I also re-located a bunch of leaves to the mow-&-mulch pile.  I've been REALLY DIGGING the Ego handheld blower.  It's every bit as effective as my commercial Stihl backpack blower and way less noisy, plus no mixed fuel.  Our next Ego purchase will be the polesaw and a couple more 5Ah batteries.  I can't praise the Ego equipment enough.  My fleet of Stihl  power equipment -chainsaws, blower, and the line trimmer- have not been getting much use since mid-summer.   I'm actually considering selling the Stihls and getting another Shindaiwa- my Stihl trimmer has been really finicky lately when the Homelite (Shindaiwa) runs just as good now as it did when I bought it for my father over a decade ago.  I use the Ego trimmer at home and the Homelite lives up in Buckingham on the property.

Somewhere during the day I checked my Crypto-IRA and all I can do is smile- I called Sonja over to check and we both grinned some more.

Speaking of grinning- careful clothing, footwear, and glove choices have been paying off bigtime.  I still chose to do a double-rinse with Dawn detergent before bothering with a regular clothes wash on the clothes we wore Saturday after we "discovered" the grand poo-bah of poison ivy vines on the property out west- 2 separate main vines each over 10 inches in diameter merging into a thigh-sized monstrosity with "twigs" the size of my thumb and leaves larger than a softball.  We found 4 others almost as large and bypassed those until we bring some horticultural vinegar and the sprayer.  We chopped a bunch of smaller ones while clearing some ancient barb-wire and the clothes got splashed with the oils, I'm sure.  Why the vinegar?  The property line is the James River, and the last thing I want to do is use glyphosate on a river feeding into the Chesapeake Bay.

I've been thinking about a Stihl backpack but now I'll look at the ego handheld.

Lemme tell yah, that Ego handheld is a real workhorse.  I already had the 18" chainsaw with the 5 Ah battery, the hedgetrimmer with the 2.5 Ah battery, and we recently sprung for the Linetrimmer/blower pack which comes with a 2.5 Ah battery.  The 2.5 Ah battery works for quick cuts, hedges, and running the line trimmer, but the blower EATS a battery on turbo-mode.  Still, it's perfect for behind the sheds, under the canoe, through the carport, and anywhere I don't want to wear hearing protection for.

I spent 2+ hours clearing hedges using the hedgetrimmer with the 5 Ah battery, and I can weed-wack the entire yard with a 2.5 Ah battery- and I'm talking not just the .93 acres of our yard, I'm including the ditch itself.  I've used the chainsaw intermittently for 3 hours without depleting the 5 Ah battery (I had just sharpened the blade- I prefer re-profiling into a straight chisel-cut) and still had over 1/5th charge.

It feels weird having a shed full of gas-powered equipment but using only the battery stuff at home.  We have a nice yard of "native vegetation" meaning clover, dandelion, bermuda, some fescue, millet, and who-knows-what-else.  With 7 dogs total, so-called grass wouldn't survive   And yeah, we avoid chemicals as much as possible.  The only thing we ever treat is poison ivy, oak, and sumac- and there we stick to horticultural vinegar.  It ain't as fast as glyphosate (RoundUp) but it kills those nasty urushiol-laden plants as dead as a .25 Hades smacking a chipmunk's nugget.

Out on the property, we stick to gas equipment.  I've put in 6 hour days running the linetrimmer while Sonja's uses one of the walk-behind line trimmers; speaking of which, I just converted that rascal from the hard plastic high-wheels to inflatable wheelbarrow wheels and WOW what a difference.  Since the property is long and narrow (over 6 acres) and butts up against the James River, we really try to be good stewards of the environment.  Poison ivy/oak/sumac do not get a pass, though, and we'll be encouraging the coyote to move along forcefully.  The hornets... well, they just gonna die!

Came home from work and took on the stubborn lower ball joint. Successfully removed it and installed the new one without breaking anything. Tomorrow the rest of the parts will be installed.  Hoping to get the one side completely done before the next weather system moves in later this week. Battery powered tools have been a blessing for me on this project. They are well worth the money.

Drove four boat tours.  Kinda unexpected.  I was supposed to be in the field today but the boss caught me early and told me someone had called in sick.  I’m the go-to boat driver when I’m available.  I’m beat. Tomorrow will be my third day in a row on boats.  I will be really beat tomorrow.

Thanks John, no they are not for the faint-hearted for sure. This one was probably the original, I try to stay out of water and mud as much as possible due to the fact it can get expensive replacing parts. The hub is original as well so it was due to be replaced. It might take me some time to get it done but it will be done right. I have to replace the lug nuts the kid at the tire store destroyed with an air wrench. They are the 2 piece decorative lugs that Chrysler sold, if you put an air wrench to them they spread out and break off which makes it hard to change tires in an emergency. These are the original lugs that came with the truck and every place that I had tires done took them off by hand to prevent that from happening until I ran into this little yo yo. This is one reason I have gone back to doing my repairs again. Nobody wants to take pride in what they do and do it right.

fixed user id's in the facilities management software

The ball joint saga continues, came home and installed the upper ball joint and made sure everything was lined up right before torquing everything down. Trying to get this done before the rainy weather they predict for the end of the week gets here. Not in no hurry with this so everything is done right and nothing is broken in the process. Tomorrow the bearing hub will be installed. Just one day at a time.
