Must be a regional variation in names. Most likely adaptation to regional climate patterns and soils. Around here, they also nest in tree cavities. A longtime resident warned me that they like to nest in dead pinyons, of which there are many due to desertification and bark beetle infestations.YJs can nest in the ground but supposedly cannot dig their way out. Supposedly one can bury the things and kill the entire batch. So far, I have never encountered a ground nest here. Elsewhere is a different story.

Once in a great while they will take up residence in an abandoned house. I have plowed up my fair share of them over the years.
My dad had Polio and walked with difficulty and only with braces and crutches. When I was nine I stepped in a Yellow Jacket nest while helping dad do yard work. Dad couldn’t run and I wouldn’t leave him. Dad got stung over forty times and I got stung 28 times. Fortunately neither one of us is allergic but it did give me a life long hatred of ground wasps.Today I finished the portrait and caricature I promised a co-worker
Today is my wife's birthday, I fixed her smoked brisket, with coleslaw and baked beans and strong iced tea. Also made some Texas toast. My son brought chips and my younger daughter made a chocolate cake.
