Today is a much needed day of rest for me. Power finally came back on this morning and I'm enjoying being able to sit on the back patio listening to the peaceful wind through the trees without the generator. Glad to have it as many did not who suffered two days without power in the miserable heat but hearing that day after day does get old.

Never used that before.

I just use the guide that clamps to the bar and a round file. 

I always have 3-4 chains on hand.  If I hit the dirt or something it's quick to swap out for a sharp chain.  I'll sharpen chains ready for the next job.  I really try to not touch the moving chain to anything but wood.  I HATE sharpening chains

 I picked up a few on close out, I just wear a glove and turn the chain by hand to sharpen, mainly used them for cutting wood that had nails in so was an easy sharpen to keep going. I prefer a properly sharpened typical blade.

Father's Day stuff.  My parents and my MIL came over today.  Kids made lunch and dessert for the afternoon.  Been visiting, playing pool, listening to music and just enjoying the day with family.  Oldest son called and we talked on the phone for a bit.  Married daughter in Oregon has been texting most of the day(that's normal though).  It's good to have people!

A couple of the boys gave me a new knife as a gift.

I've just been weed whacking. Went out early to avoid the heat but ran out of string so came back in the house to cool off a little then went back out, rewound the spool and did some more until I got too hot and shut it down. Came back in the house and been cooling it for most of the afternoon. Probably go and do a little more once it cools off.

Late field patrol today.  Emptying garbage cans, picking up trash, cleaning grills and bathrooms.  The Po Buckras was out in force!  Don't believe I've seen that many bad tattoos in one place before.

JD's, drunks, and just plain idiots.  Big national drinking holidays are the worst!  I earned my $9.57 per hour today!

That is a great option for someone that only uses a chainsaw once or twice a year.

It's just what I have done and am familiar with is all.  Actual tree guys don't even need a guide.  They can sharpen freehand.  I'm a weekend warrior and sharpen a chain once a year if that.  The guide helps me keep the geometry correct one the cutting teeth.  Get then off too far and the saw will want to cut to one side or the other.  Not such a big deal on small stuff aroi d the house but deeper cuts on larger material it can be an issue.

I've had that same knife for several years now. I really like shape of that blade and micarta handle. Didn't come with a very sharp edge, and it's hard to get a sharp edge on that stainless steel with typical conventional stones.
I used to wear it as a neck knife, but didn't like the lack of sharpness of the edge. One of these days I'm going to have it sharpened by a professional, and from there I should be able to maintain it.

Brett and Dinh- I like that blade design.  Seems superb for a utility-style blade.

I've not used that type of chain sharpener; I hand-file free-hand on semi-chisel chains doing a slight re-profile.  I used to stick to straight grind with gas saws, but now that I use battery-powered almost exclusively, the semi-chisel profile works best on the woods on our property.  I am finding these narrow-gauge chains stretch faster, though.  I went through 2 more chains Saturday, working on felling and bucking some cedars, locust, and shagbark; nothing big but all of them with abnormally twisted grain (I guess normal for the locust). 

Speaking of which, Sonja and I spent Saturday working on the property; mowing, trimming around trees we're keeping, and maintaining pathways.  Sunday we floated the upper James from Wingina to our property with her parents (a little over 7 miles).  They rode their kayaks, which is pretty darn impressive considering my FiL died but was revived multiple times, then had a reverse shoulder replacement this last fall.  My mother in law had both hips replaced about the same time.  Theu both also got to experience the epic joy of an inflatable Bote-brand kayak, and I foresee them each getting one.  Sonja and I lost track of how many smallmouth and catfish we saw, usually being hunted by longnose gar.  I tried multiple times to get photos of the gar while paddling but never was able to quite manage on account of the gar being freakin' fast! 

It was yet another epic weekend; productive and relaxing all in one.

The Red Shed and Betty Lou's She Shed are both on the one acre parcel that our home is on. We're in no danger of losing either.

A monster line of storms came through this morning at just before 5am. It lasted a couple hours and power was out for about 3 hours. It's back on but it blinks in and out about every 30 minutes or so. There is a large tree that came down directly across the dirt road from our mailbox at the end of the driveway. It's just beyond our drive and does not block our access to the hard road.
It hung in a tree on our side of the road and there is just enough clearance to drive under it. I have no need to and will not be driving under it...  But the guy that lives down the road, the same one that bought the bar/mancave, has to drive under it..... tell me there is no such thing as karma...

Whew, what a day. We haven't worked like that in.. heck, I didn't work like that before I retired. 

It became apparent that the fencing was priority. So after coffee and a bite to eat Betty Lou and I went out, discussed a plan, debated the plan, finally came to an agreement on the plan and commenced the plan. Then came the amendments to the plan. The only positive about the plan is that at no point did we back track the plan.
The humidity amidst these thunder storms rolling through is horrendous. I drank 3 32oz yeti mugs of ice water and sweated 5. Betty Lou had to peal my clothes off me. They were stuck to my body.
We fenced 1/2 acre through woods and swamp from the storms. We put in 2 gates, one for atvs and one for packing in supplies. That one is a 10' x 6' framed section of chain link with a man door. The whole 10' panel can also be opened. The rest of the fencing is 6" square hog wire. We reused fencing that we previously bought and ran when we fenced the entire 4 acres.
I still need to buy and drive in 4 or 5 "T" posts just to shore up a few longer runs. But, the dogs have been out and walked the perimeter of their new confines. I didn't hear any complaints.
I took a steaming hot shower and when Betty Lou finishes taking her's (she wanted to call her momma and share the craziness of the past few days before showering) I'll see if simple boiled hotdogs are possible.

Oh, I forgot to share what happened when the city arrived to remove the fallen tree... which is what made it urgent to do the new fence.
When they grabbed that tree with an excavator to remove it, they uprooted the remains of the large broken tree that it snapped off and was holding it up on our side of the road. That tree just happened to be the one that our driveway gate was attached to. Now the tree and 16' gate are torn out and laying in the ditch line.
On a good note.. it's not my tree or gate... anymore.
