Rifled barred 840 ?

So I've wanted an early metal receiver model 840 for quite a while now, and when I saw this on the bay earlier i jumped on it without much thinking.
The listing doesn't say, but in the pictures the receiver sure looks like metal.
I jumped on it because of it's condition with the box, because it's said to be tested and working, and of course because it's got a rifled barrel.

I knew of the version with a rifled barrel and target sights called the 845 mentor, but I never knew they offered a version of the standard 840 with a rifled barrel.

Can any Daisy experts tell me what they see in these pictures ?
I don't think that lot # can be read in the picture, but does the box give anything away regarding the age of the gun.

Either way I think I did pretty good for $60 shipped.

I know, I didn't catch that at first and almost passed the gun up till I did.
At first glance I didn't pay attention to that yellow sticker assuming it just read OIL HERE ~>

I probably I won't know anything until I get it and check the number but I figure it's worth a shot to see If anything In this picture gives it's age away to someone with more Daisy knowledge than me.

I think that’s the same gun as my first BB gun. Killed many apples with that gun.

Nice score! Can't quite make out the Lot No. but I'd guess early '80s. The 840 below (not mine) is an '82.

Sounds about right, the design on the box is obviously of the same era.

Thanks, I definitely raised a brow or two when I saw it.

I can definitely see why they're hot sellers, I really love a low powered gun for shooting plastic dinosaurs...ect and I know my '99 840 gets the job done just fine at 5 yds.
This may not compare to my Crosman 781 with target sights, but with a rifled barrel it should shoot much better than my smoothbore 1999 840.

Well, I'll have my gun when the PO puts the mail and package notifications in people's boxes this afternoon.
Man I can't wait, with FedEx it took way longer than it would have USPS.

Well it turns out the receiver is plastic 
Oh well, it's still a nice little gun.
The stock is about an inch longer which is nice, and the cheek weld is slightly lower so it's easier to get a sight picture.

The lot # L22 puts this at November of '82 if I read the information right.

Oh and I got the original paperwork + accessory pamphlet which I didn't expect.


It's probably going to need an alcohol flush because it leaks a little out the barrel, but that's no big deal.

That is a sweet little shooter for sure.

The valve on these is a simple plastic "plug", same type as used in the 853, 753, etc. It uses a striker as opposed to the exhaust valve pull off "hammer" of the 880, so actually it's a lot more like the 853 than an 880 internally. Alcohol flush may well do the trick but if it did need new seals, at least they're cheap from Daisy.

ETA- As of 3-21-19 Daisy no longer has 169319-K00 O-ring and valve group, and will not be restocking it.

There's a few little spots of paint loss on the barrel shroud, but it pretty much is brand new for sure.
Even though it has a plastic receiver I'm still very happy with it for the price I payed.

A good quickie alcohol flush did the trick, I put a bunch in cycled it all through the gun then took the air compressor and got as much of it flushed out as I could.
I've oiled it, tested it, and it prefers the Daisy pointed pellets over anything crosman. They're tight to chamber but that's what it prefers.

I've been popping dollar store dinosaurs at 10 yds and having a ton of fun.

They're a fun little gun for sure, so far from what I've shot through it it's not a tack driver but much better than anything smooth bore I have.
