Rifled barred 840 ?

I could swear the early 840's had a metal receiver, but I'm finding no reference to this at all.
Maybe I'm just mistaken

I have not seen a reference to a metal receiver on an 840.
If there was, I would jump on it!

I have what I believe is a very early version of the 840 and it has a plastic receiver.
It has a smooth top on the receiver (ie. no dovetail to mount an optic) and has a metal plate on the end of the buttstock.
The buttstock is also slightly longer than the camo and midnight versions I have.

After reading this thread I took a look down the barrels of the two 840's I have and they are both rifled. I always thought they were smooth bores.

This explains the good accuracy. They were bought around 1983 but I believe they came in a large blister pack and not a box. $19.99 each from Coast to Coast Hardware.
