I took the two shallowest pins (heaviest Pellet) from the 250-35-RF (discontinued mold) and they eyeballed really close and two of the flat pins, and the lighter ones are all real close to 40 grains and the flat ones are 42 grains.

I placed my order four days ago and it still hasn't shipped.

Got my replacement pins in today and night and day difference. I'd made reference to the pins being 'fiddly' in prior posts and to be honest I was really wondering just what the heck as I know that it shouldnt be that difficult.
In any case... got the new pins in today and they work perfectly. I cast appx 200 pellets today in a short amount of time to test and all went without issue at all. Superb product and excellent service.
Still havent cast any with the .30 mold, but planning on doing so tomorrow!

hey Bob I really wanted to get some cast and tested but have been pretty sick this last week a lot of pain... finally went to the doc this morning and got sent to the hospital... they did a cat scan turns out I have a condition Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation(and possibly an ulcer)... one by each lung and one is inflamed... not life threatening at this point just painful... always wondered why I never got my second wind when I had to do the long runs (5-10 miles) when I was a youngster in infantry... would just gut it out...

point being I wanted to thank you and Al for making the challenge of learning small bore cast with air possible...I have had a blast so far and knew it had a good chance of being useful if we get it all right from design to execution...the other thing is I just love the feeling of independence it gives once you get things going well... then there is the sense of accomplishment when all the things you think you have learned over the years to try in the end work to a useful degree...

anyways Bob keep up the good work and do not let abrasive guys like rifle 50 get to you... notice he never did share any barrel specifics with us just put things down talking with terms like you got him..

and bragged about his accomplishment(they are impressive)... but no chance to figure out why they were not working for him... Boat tails have proven themselves over and over we just need to find all the fine points of making them work with air at subsonic speeds... point being not all ammo works out of all rifles... and like the guys that started running .257 and up it was new at the time and figuring it out is part and parcel of what all that are casting should expect...and all are paving the way and even with all the different things to try(say like cutting off the choke etc) nothing is guaranteed... but sharing info can help point out things that tend to work or not thus speeding up the learning curve...

one more piece of data from me... just to make sure I tried harder cast 4%-5% tin w/trace antimony sized .249 thru .252 and as expected(because of the choke) my Mrod did not like it with the 40g BBT.

So my testing may be even slower than my usual this time... casting and Vicodin do not mix...

Speaking of which hope I made sense the Vicodin done kicked in about the time I started typing...

I didn't expect to get the replacement pins near as fast as they came, they were in the mail yesterday which really surprised me. I haven't had a chance to use them yet but I do have the shallowest set installed on the mold right now, I was going to mold some up but things were still pretty saturated outside at the time so I decided to wait considering I'm in no big hurry to mold them up just yet. I will report on the new pins but they just fit so perfect I doubt there'll be any problems whatsoever

Hope you get to feeling much better very soon KO. my back finally let me do things again after surgery, now the left knee went out. Hurts like "L". No idea at all what I did to it. Just woke up and couldn't walk. Man, old age. GRRRR!!! lol!

Best I could tell from reading around the forum is if you are buying lead, get pure lead and add a small amount of tin. Looked like from 1% to 2.5% (40:1) tin was the most common.

Any recommendations on the alloy?

A bit of tin assists in making the lead "flow" into small corners, so in theory it would fill out the skirts easier.... 1-2.5% is the correct range, the more tin the harder the pellet becomes.... Pure lead is BHN 5, and 2.5% (40:1) is BNH 8.... Some tin in the alloy also makes the pellets stay bright and shiny longer, pure lead turns grey from oxidation within a year or less.... If pure lead is working for you, don't worry about adding tin, IMO.... Pure lead requires a higher casting temperature.... usually over 800*F....

When did you place your order? It's been 7 days on mine and still no shipping notice. Don't know how backed up they are, but my other orders haven't taken this long to ship.

Yes Cindi, No alloy but tin. Stay far away from antimony. Wheel wates are full of it. And worse, may have zinc, which will completely ruin the entire melt.

Sounds like a winner to me! Very much looking forward to playing with this new mold. I've had very good success with NOE Bullet molds for the .257's

Michael the two NOE molds that I have you can really see the quality of them, much better than the Lee's that I've got but the Lee's are for Muzzle loaders so they're not as critical as they are for a smaller caliber like the .25

The NOE's are truly a huge notch above. I only have around 5 of them, and every single one of them are truly works of the mold makers art.

I have been poking around on Roto Metals website, lots of information there.
For every 1% additional tin, Brinell hardness increases 0.3.
For every 1% additional antimony, Brinell hardness increases 0.9.
For a simple equation,
Brinell = 8.60 (Antimonial Lead) + ( 0.29 * Tin ) + ( 0.92 * Antimony )
They do have information specifically related to bullet casting. They even sell melting pots.
