Next time I work on mine I will polish where the torsion spring  rests but tone honest I really did not notice any change when j polished the other two spots. The biggest improvement I got was the trigger stop and  playing with the the torsion spring.

I’ve had a very pleasant experience with my Maximus. I bought it used with an Mrod trigger and N.C. LDC. Initially, it was just to fill the .22 slot until the Gauntlet was released and it did well for my grandkids last summer. The Gauntlet came and I love it, and who needs more than one .22 right?  So I decided to sell it. Last week, just to fill in time, I gave it a REALLY good cleaning, installed a Disco spring, and was low on JSB pellets so I pulled out some cheap CHP’s, filled it up to 1800 psi, and wow!  The darned little thing shoots really nice out to about 40-50 yards for 20+ shots.  In fact, it’s no longer for sale. While still no match for my Gauntlet, it’s dynamite as a fun, cheap, plunker and the Mrod trigger is sooo nice. The moral of the story is that maybe two guns of the same caliber may not be too many 😏.

I will never sell my  maximus. I like my 177 gauntlet by my maximus is so much lighter and easy to carry around for long walks in the woods. Its a great gun to hunt with accurate and handy ....

  I have their spring and PA and A Baker Trigger, couldn’t be happier !  That stock spring was a bear.

Cheap way to lighten up trigger pull. Got the stiff oem spring replaced with #3 safety pin. Just cut to size and tune until you hear the sear click so it's not hair trigger.

Got mine done for over  a year and what I did was just put the OEM to a same size dia. P screw driver and bend the safety pin up to 180 deg then insert it...it'll be same as the OEM (too small and it pushes the plate cover, need to get in the plastic that hold the pin from the plate when closed, then size/bend the pin to match the original spring. Don't get it very light or the sear will get hang up. I set mine up till I hear it click.

That's a sweet mod. I just bought a few different springs but a safety pin is so free lol

What's you guy's opinion on hammer spring preload?

I've read that there shouldn't be any preload so the hammer isn't resting against the valve stem. But then I've read of folks using power adjusters with softer springs which does put the hammer against the valve stem.

Either way, I'm replacing the hammer spring with one that's .042" to lighten cocking effort. Just don't know if I should add a power adjuster.

I'm aiming to get around 750fps with JSB 15.9s as well as a flat shot string for at least 15-20 shots. If just the spring will do it, that's the way I'll go.

I got power adjuster on mine with oem spring backed out... getting 40 shots with 14.3 cphp starting 765fps  peaked at 813fps  40th shot at 762fps just below 1k from my pump when filling it back up. I think i did bstaley mod on this too...been awhile since i opened it up.

    really wish i had a chronograph because ive modded up my maximus an it is hands down the best air rifle ive owned ,   i know that doesnt say much as its my first HPA  airgun and also  the most expensive one ive shot .      but over the years ive shot many airguns and modded most all of them  and also  built some nice 10/22's an modernized a couple .308's   ,  so i feel like i know enough to say i don't know @$%^ ! 
 
    But anyway .    that maximus is so close to other models that crosman has had over the years a lot of the info out there for other models  applies ,

   right out of the box i dissembled it ,  replaced the valve with a baker maxflow ported the maxflow for 1/4 poly tube making sure exhaust matched  then polished it .  polished the valve stem .
 re-crowned the barrel even though it looked good to me .  ported the barrel to match an seal with the poly transfer port mod .   polished the area ramping up to the riffling an at the bolt o-ring seal .
  cleaned it with gun patches using  brake cleaner , ammonia/windex then rem oiled it . 

   
  swapped the bolt with a magnum airpower stainless steel bolt .   it stopped the bolt handle from hopping up when fired as its heavy compared  to any of the OEMs i own ,   also installed a RVA power adjuster i bought from magnum airpower to go along with a .045 spring ,       bought a Disco airtube an upgraded the valve retaining screws  from 2 to 3 stainless steel from magnum air.

   Polished the factory hammer and drilled / tapped it to fit a stainless steel Hammer pin i made .        found out the hard way on a different crosman model that a weak spot when using a really strong spring is the hammer pin !      it will bend with a really strong spring and bind up making it to hard to cock !~   
   
   now i see you can buy aftermarket hammers an pins that have more travel and are stainless steel,.   

installed a mrod trigger group then polished all the internal parts that touch ,  added shims over all the pins to remove any side to side motion in the trigger an sear ,       
  tried case hardening for the first time on the sear ,   adjusted  the trigger so it was a light with a clean break ,     i  need a scale to say its weight but its heavy enough i cant misfire !

 Drilled out the gauge port , polished its internals .    probably going to buy one for a Prod i believe an upgrade the gauge .
 
 inletted the stock for dual barrel bands . 

i Fill to about 3200psi now , an shoot down to 1500 .  adjusted the RVA in untill it was to hard to cock then backed it out till i could cock it .   its shooting JSB Match Diabolo Exact Jumbo Monster .22 Cal, 25.39 Grains, Domed  around 50 yards like a tack driver !!!!!     


 im impressed with its accuracy just wish i had a chronograph now ,    what ever its shooting its doing it with alot of power an i feel im going to hit it !!!
