Maximus .22 shoots Crosman 14.3 really well

I just wanted to report what others probably already have.  I've been shooting JSBs out of my Maximus and decided to try the Crosman HP's from Walmart.  To my surprise, they seeem to shoot as well or better than the expensive JSB's and for $6.49 per 500, that's really cheap shooting.  Granted, that's only one Maximus but if you have one, it might be worth your while to give it a try.  We were shooting water bottles consistently at a measured 75 yards and even stretched it out to 100 with almost the same consistency (provided there's no wind).  I'm getting 30+ good shots with a Gen2 spring from Discos-r-us.  It's not a powerhouse but will solve most pest issues out to 30 yards.  Beyond that, I have my .25.  I don't have a chronograph so I don't know the exact fps, but it's enough for good accuracy at somewhat extended distances.  I really like my Maximus!

     I have one in .177 and it likes the Crosman 10.5's  the best so far. Accurate enough for me and the distances I shoot at. it is a fine light rifle for being as inexpensive as they are.

Ain't it nice to have an airgun that shoot cheap pellets where you aim it. My maximus hunter 22 main diet is 14.3 CPHP's and Benjamin 14.3 domes.

My Max .22 likes the WW CPHP's too. Shoot just as well as H&N FTT's.

Just finished testing my  Max .22 at 30 yards after having to work on the barrel... before it did not really like any thing: had a slightly off chamber and no leade... I tried my fav the Crosman  domed 14.3 (just purchased)  and some others... some did ok...  but  none did really well..

then I tried  Benji Hollows  and wow 3 really nice 5 shot groups... one (below)looked like a 3 shot cloverleaf .4" outside to outside...the other two just slightly larger...  picked those up about 2.5-3 years ago have about 2500 left... I then tried my Crosman 14.3 Hollow point stash (~3500) got another very impressive group... then next group a flier on me and maybe one not on me but still right at .5 ctc...   then before I had to head down to town I tried the Crosman pointed just one hurried six shot group in which I think I caused the horizontal spread but they look to be about .5"  probably...jury is still out on them

Still have a few to test and need to pick up some JSB .22... need to retest copper mags... have some older 14.3g domed to try...also have a few 21g Cudas and Kodiak... also will have to see how it does when thing are stretched out there soon...but need to put a better scope on for that...


so far I am amazed this is the first time the hollow point have shot like this... it is usually the domes that shoot slightly better with my little 1322 carbine collection... heck even the Remminton domes out did the .22 CPUM..

I am just jazzed the barrel was fixable...

was using a 16$ Tasco 3-7x20 and have a bit of a floater that is clearing up.

only put a softer spring behind the trigger...  still a bit to heavy but better and predictable... Barrel port had a loose fit for a .125" drill bit so opened the valve exhaust and t-port to .125" those and fixing the chamber/leade/tight spot  are it for mods

Mine maximus loves the 14.3 CPHP.. and that price is fantastic. Mine witj put them pellet on pellet out to about 40 yards. Sub dime size groups at 30

oops forgot one more mod... when the barrel was tight I broke the bolt handle loading a copper mag... so instead of stealing the bolt handle from one of my 13xxs... I had read a recent tip that one of my archery points would work after shortening the threads a bit... Thanks GTA..

For the most part my Maxi shoots the CPHP's as well as as the RWS Superdomes, H&N FTT's, and the JSB 18g Heavies.
 Just the occasional flyer from pellet inconsistencies seem to show up with them (CPHP) more.
But for the price and availability, it will be fed a lot more of them.

I'm still trying to get rid of the tin of Crosman 14.3g piranha pellets that shipped with my Max, they do okay, but it seems there's always one pellet out of 5 that wants to explore the outer regions of the target!  I've not played much with the CPCP's, I may have to pull out a tin and spend some more time with them.  Thanks of the tip!

Tried sizing the .22 CPUM and .22 Crosman Copper Mags by pushing them thru my .220 NOE insert... No joy...

It is so weird to me that the Hollow points are so much more accurate... it has in every other case been the opposite result from 450 fps to 800...

Do have a tin of the sharp tooths will have to give them a try...not holdin my breath tho...

I think that is P/A gives them away...That is how I got my tin as well.

Because no one will actually purchase them!  Before I knew better, I got a tin from Walmart because they sent them instead of the hollow points.  I looked on-line and saw Walmart was charging $2.00 more for the Piranhas than they were the hollow points, and thought, wow I got a deal!  Now I know I was snookered!  I won't fall for that again!

I too fell (once and only once) for the Piranha's. I found they were nowhere consistent enough even for plinking. That being said, I do find the CPHP and the CPUM to be very consistent. Alas being in Canada I pay $15 for the CPUM and $13 for the CPHP.

I can testified this...... It is HORRIBLE when you guys in the States are telling us what are the price you pay for.....

This is a previous post of my results.
The results were very close for me for me with JSB or the CPHP.

I tried the 14.3 CPHP from wally World and the 18.13 JSB Exacts.

The accuracy between the two were to close to call, even with the jsbs giving a few more consistent fps shots. If  I want to pay double the price and get shipped only to get just a little more FPEs, Ill get the JSBs. The CPHP 14.3 gives a little less FPE and I can get them anywhere. The over all accuracy was very close from start of the shot string  to the end.

Shots made at 25 yards starting at  2000psi shot down to 1000 psi. Both strings came out to be 22cphp to 23jsb shots.

The JSB 18.1 started at 745.1 fps. The max fps reached was 795.7 fps around 1500psi range. Everything else in the high range stayed in the high 760s to 770s. The795.7 shot was the only shot that high. Final shot was around  1000psi at 733.5fps.

The sweet spot was around  1700 to 1100psi.

High at 795fps
Low at 753.8  last shot of sweet spot at 1100psi
Ave 768.18fps
Giving an average 23.76FPE.

Now the Crosmans
The CPHP 14.3 started at 827.2 fps. The max fps reached was 866.3 fps around 1800psi range. Everything else in the high range stayed in the high 850s to 860s.  Final shot was around 1000psi at 803.7 shot 22. 

The sweet spot was around  1800 to 1300psi.

High at 866.3 fps
Low at 841.4  last shot of sweet spot at 1300psi
Ave 853.13 fps
Giving an average 23.12FPE.

The JSBs did give me a more consistent fps and more shots (16) in the sweet spot, over all 23 shots in the fill. But I didnt loose any accuracy even with the looser fps spread over the entire 22 shots with only 12 shot count in the sweet spot of the cphp.

I had 16 shots Giving an average 23.76FPE with the JSBs
and 12 shots  Giving an average 23.12FPE with the CPHP.

I think I will stay with the CPHPs for the money. The fps variance may be more but the accuracy stayed the same.

Oh yea, my son who is still learning was very happy. He was able to hit a dime at 25 yards using the cphp. Made me very proud.

Yes this is what it is like here. You don't even want to know the price of the air rifles (if we can even get them here.) I have a firearm lic so I own high powered air rifles (anything over 500 fps considered a firearm) but we can't get anything here that has a sound moderator. Earlier this year I purchased a Gamo Magnum on sale for $349 (regular price at Cabala's is $499.99) Even the low power stuff 495 fps is insane ie: BenjaminŽ Steel Eagle Jim Shockey Signature Series Air Rifle $369.99!
