Chinese High Side Filter Dryer Hack

It is only about 1.2" D x 3.5" L   The female foster fit the male on my SB compressor* and the male fit the 2' JB hose female.  With no sieve material, it took less than 5 min to pressurize from zero to 4500psi. 

While this is significantly smaller than the standard size GF of this thread, the mini-me might be sufficient for my fill rate, fill times of 90ci and guppy tanks, and not having a significant humidity levels to deal with.   It is easy to unassemble and check/replace filter and media.  I'm going to run it for a few fills (without sieve) and see if any noticeable moisture is found.  If all looks good, will probably abandon the full size GF and not go with the extra plumbing to keep it pressurized. 

For those filling large tanks and/or faster fill rates, the standard GF is probably a better option for you. 

* NOTE: This would not fit a standard SB compressor because the male foster is too close to the compressor.  I have an extension, tee with gauge and bleed, that allows the mini-me to overhang the edge of the table.

Update: After one guppy fill 3K to 4.5Kpsi, there was no detectable moisture in the cotton filter or the chamber.  The outer housing stood cool to the touch during the fill cycle.

I'm new to this forum and got the XIN YONG SHI gold filter dryer from Aliexpress along with the molecular sieve from ebay. I like Humdinger have decided not to go with any liner mainly because of what others reported when using the Diabolo filter. I will report if any sign of corrosion appears as used. Also I've heard of some using activated alumina 1/8" beads as it supposedly doesn't cause corrosion but I don' know if it is as effective as molecular sieve. I'm using the dryer on a Yong Heng compressor just to top off my guns with no filling of large tanks and I don't run it too long and often. So it will be a while if I even do see any signs of corrosion. Although I do believe it's better to be more cautious about these things what Joe Brancato says I just don't completely buy.

This is going to be a few silly questions, but

Where are you guys buying your o-rings from?  I've been to nearly every single hardware store (big box or otherwise) in my area and I'm just not finding proper fitting o-rings.  I read here that the size to use is a 3mm x 25mm o-ring, but it seems no one is selling metric sizes.  I really don't want to order from McMaster Carr or some other warehouse because I don't need 20+ o-rings.

(This is the really silly question) Where do the o-rings go?  Under the end caps?  Should it go pvc, o-ring, tampon?  Pvc, tampon, o-ring?  This picture is confusing to me:



is the tampon inside the pvc?  Or is it sitting on top?  In the pic, it looks like the tampon material is partially inside the pvc, and some of the filter is outside the pvc to create a sort of lip for the o-ring.

Fill PVC with sieve such that the tampon in both ends sticks out 4 to 5 mm.  Then pull a tampon out of 1 end far enough to hold and slip the o-ring on.  Then push the tampon back in.  Do the same on the other side.    The o-ring is over the tampon but up against the PVC.  Then when you put the end caps on, the o-ring is compresses between the PVC and the end cap.  The tampon keeps the o-ring in place.

I received 1 long a 1 short tampon with mine.  The short one was about 2 inches if I remember correctly.  I cut that in half and used a piece on each side of the sieve.

I don't recall what size o ring I used...it was in an o ring kit from harbor freight. I think the kit was like $8 and has proved VERY handy to have!

I lightly lube, then roll an o ring onto each end of the pvc. Cut two pieces of tampon about 1"-1.5" long, stick one piece,into the pvc leaving about 1/8"-3/16" proud of the pvc. Fill with media and insert the other tampon the same way as the first. Now just roll each o ring off the pvc and onto the little bit of tampon sticking out. Shove the whole thing into the gold filter housing,tighten the end caps.

An inch is 25.4mm, so if you see o rings in the store that are 1", that will work.  3mm thickness is roughly equivalent to 1/8 inch.

The ones I used came out of a multi size assortment pack from a home center.  About $7 if I remember correctly.

Just ordered a Hong Yeng Compressor, Chinese Gold Filter and bits and pieces to build my HPA charging rig.  Until I see concrete evidence to the contrary, I am going to fill my Gold Filter directly. I’m omitting an inner PVC liner  and using 2" and 1/2″ thick cut sections of the supplied tampon as inner end caps for 13X molecular sieve beads.
Here’s why I don’t toss out junk from the workshop!  …..salvaged this old Hankison refrigerated air dryer and did a 5-minute conversion to a water chiller  …will be used as a closed-loop chill water/glycol cooling system for my Yong Heng compressor rig 😉  …..It’s the right color too! (epoxy containers for size reference).

same here.... used 2" tampon on both ends of 13x sieve....
i have a self contained closed loop cooling system thats really more than what it needs to be for filling rifles.
tanks and other stuff, i have no clue about.

long has you have a pre-filter before the gold one to monitor your operation, all should be just fine.

i ordered it on aliexpress and IIRC, it took about 10days or so via DHL, but i see you are alot closer.....

My thanks to you for the inspiration.  Your description walked me right through it, I just thought some pics might help others.

Did you struggle like I did getting the second cap off?  Boy it was really on there.  I tried a strap wrench, and couldn't budge it.  That is when I wrapped it in a dozen layers of duct tape and clamped it in the vice.

One other note -  The internal threads are incredibly sharp.  I saw some paper remnants in them and reached in with my finger to wipe them out of there, and the project took a short break for first aid.....

So does everyone think this filter is as strong as the diablo. I am gonna order one but just wanting some info from someone who has it if you feel very safe using it pressure wise.
