Just ordered an Air Force Texan .45 from PA, I've got a Nikko Sterling Game king scope but I have to order Rings, I hear the high rings are good for the Texan, also would like input on the best pellets, I ordered some of the new JSB .457 234.3gn pellets and Air Venturi .457 250gn, also some AV round ball .457 143gn, also ordered some Lee .457 round ball mold and bullet .457 340gn mold, any one have other suggestions?

Talk to Nick Nielsen at www.nielsenspecialtyammo.com. He has done extensive testing with the Texan.

Congrats on the Texan! I had great results with Nielsen's 276gr RBT swaged, out to 75yd, longest tested. The Lee round ball also did quite well. Maxi's did not fly well at all, tried several sizes of those. Mrhollowpoint in 280gr did quite well too, and were still moving fast. By well, I mean 1in or better at 50yd, though really more like 75yd. I heard good things about the 340gr but never tried. Interestd to see JSB's performance.

Thanks for the Link, I just ordered some .457 168gn, the price is a good deal for 100 rnds, others are about same price for 50 rnds, the Texan should get shipped out today and should arrive next week.
I'll do some testing with the different ammo and give some results with the new JSB's, got the Chrony ready.

the Nielsen .457's came in today, the rest should be here on Saturday, hope to try it out on Sunday, see if it blows holes in the old VW bug target......

The Nielsen 168gr fly excellent thru my Texan...the 340 gr is also very good. And get the highest scope rings you can find

I have medium rings that fit picatinny rail and a dove tail to picatinny riser rail, I'm hoping that would be high enough, funny on all my other guns you want the scope as close to the barrel as possible, but in this case you want height for optical clearance from the cheek rest / tank, if that doesn't work I can always stop by Turners and pick up some higher rings.

It came in today....Put a UTG 4-16x44 side AO SWAT scope w/side wheel and a UTG QD bipod.
the medium rings are perfect height for me.

Thanks, I was thinking about that R&L shroud, for sure later, I'm going up to my buddies house in the sticks to fire this thing off, going to get her sighted in and see how big of holes it puts in the target VW bug, and maybe get a Coyote or two while I'm up there....
Trying out the new JSB .457's, see how well they work.....

I second that R&L shroud recommendation. It's the one I have on mine... Also, I'm curious about that AirVenturi HP, let us know how they fare...I personally like the Nielsen 168 and 200 gr (I don't think this one is readily available) and the Lee 340 grain is what I took down several deer with last season. I just ordered the JSB's but haven't gotten them yet, How do they shoot for you?

well just got back from screwing around all day, went up the shooting range at my Buddy's house and put a few through the Texan, I started with the Round ball .457 143gn to sight in the scope, once sighted the round balls did ok, with about 1 1/2" grouping at 50 yards, next I tried the Nielsen .457 168 gn, they were excellent, groups were 1/2" with many same hole shots, next the JSB .457 234.3 gn, the shots were about 4 inches lower than the others but very nice 1/2" grouping, the AV .45 250gn were the worst with 2" grouping and shot 5" lower, of course with the added weight this is normal and I did not adjust the power higher, set at mid range, I forgot to bring my Chrony, so no FPS readings, Sorry, but I did get some pictures of the holes it blew into the target VW and a video of it being fired.

Did some pellet test today

JSB Predator .457 324.3gn..............max Fps 900.......................421 Fpe.... very good accuracy, with in 3/4" at 50 yards
Air Venturi .457 143gn round ball......max Fps 1030.....................336.8 Fpe...Very good accuracy, with in 3/4" at 50 yards
Nielsen .457 168gn EPP slug.............max Fps 966......................348 Fpe......Very good accuracy with in 3/4" at 50 yards
Air Venturi .454 250gn PHP...............max Fps 893......................442.6 Fpe...Good accuracy with in 1" at 50yards

Now that the gun is breaking in the accuracy is getting better, but remember the .457 slugs leave 1/2"holes in everything you shoot..........so groups look bigger than normal.....

Are those numbers with the power wheel still in the middle? Have you gotten to full power with the heavy slugs? I'd imagine turning down for round ball and eppug would provide a lot more shots.

the wheel turned all the way up, Full power. yes turning down helps get more shots.

It's my understanding that the power wheel adjustment is unlike the Condor/ Talon setup. Power wheel is set closer towards breech for lighter projectiles as it keeps valve open for shorter duration and vice versa. The idea is longer air exposure in the barrel for heavier projectiles.

According to the manual, the Valve is self adjusting to the weight of the projectile, the wheel is to adjust the striker tension spring, adjusting it toward the breech allows a heavier strike on the valve causing the valve to stay open longer, this actually works better for light projectiles giving them higher velocities, turning the wheel toward the bore will decrease the tension on the striker giving more efficiency, from what the manual states you want to set the adjuster wheel to a point where it just cracks the valve open and the pressure in the bore behind the projectile will keep the valve open, the heavier the projectile the longer the valve will stay open.
