"Open-bolt" refers to a semi- or automatic weapon that fires from an "open bolt," meaning the trigger releases the bolt, which then closes and ignites the primer, usually by a fixed firing pin. It's a rather crude but effective way of building an automatic machine gun or SMG. Some select-fire rifles shoot open-bolt in fully automatic and closed in semi-automatic mode. Not sure I get the analogy to break barrels, though.

Sort of like the piston in a break barrel. You also get sort of the same delay from when the trigger is pulled to the time the projectile leaves the barrel. So shooting a good group with a quality .223 does not help one understand what is taking place when you shoot a break barrel air rifle. Just trying to help.
