I think we're into the 20s now.  Snow from the weekend is still on the ground.  We're getting more snow this weekend.

Funny thing is- we've run our propane Jotul stove maybe 10 hours this winter- and even then only when we come inside after working on the woods or similar.  Weve run the mini-split heat pump once and had to open a transom window to cool back down.  This Quonset Hut has good insulation (R-71) but the real winner is our radiant heat slab.  Even though I knew how good this type of heating was, I never have owned it... and now that I do, all I can say is this is the Cat's Meow when it comes to heating for minimal cost/effort.

Of course, our end wall facing the southwest also plays a role in keeping the house warm.  Summer time, our polarized windows and foil-back blinds tame the heat gain.

The weather people in Nashville are saying we may get 7 inches.  We will hunker down and watch the TV and computer screens.
My son brought over some Crawfish Étouffée that will be perfect over steaming rice.  We have plenty food in the freezer too.
Stay warm friends!

This morning it has warmed up considerably here in Central NE Minnesota.
The outside temp is around 12 F and the wind chill is around 0 F.
I am expecting a high today of around 23 F and about 1 to 2 inches of snow.

Best Wishes - Tom,

We live in line with a long run of wilderness area (at least as wild as SoCal has).
We live at the red star area.  That is at the south end of this area of the Cleveland Nat'l Forest. That nat'l forest area extends well to our north, and consists of what might be 75 miles of open, brush-choked wild land. So, we live with a concentrated effort at keeping ourselves in a brush cleared area. IOW,... I'm always out there with a weed whip, both the handheld shaft whip, and, a heavy duty walk behind string trimmer whip.
And, we've been screwed by the insurance companies dropping coverage, and all the hassles that go with that.  We've been working for almost 4 months to try to get coverage, and finally had to settle for the ridiculous Cal Fair Plan fake fire insurance coverage, as the insurers have dropped, what?, 75% of residents in the state!  This is going to reveal extreme political taint by the powers that be.

On sunday, Jan 05, I took my wife to breakfast for her birthday, to a cafe where we used to live. They make a Huevos Rancheros there that she will kill for. On the way home, we took a mountain road, Hwy 74 - Ortega Highway, where we had a close fire about 4 months ago, the Airport Fire. That Airport Fire burned through a small village of El Cariso.
The Airport fire started at Rancho Santa Margarita, and ran up and over the mountain via Trabuco Canyon, and burned over the ridge, and down into Lake Elsinore.  That fire destroyed like 80 homes in an area that has about 81 homes (guessing a number, but the percentage was huge).  Then, within days, this new conflagration of fires in LA county.  This all got me out again clearing brush and dead vegetation.
In all of this we've had like four insurance inspectors out photographing our property, likely in hopes of driving a wee bit more profit funding from us. But, I keep the place in really good shape, and, the inspectors were impressed, and so far, no extra billing as a result.

fingers crossed.

Parts of CO are also being scrutinized for ways to drop homeowners' insurance. This appears to be driven in part by the huge BRUSH fires near Boulder. Places people didn't consider as dangerous as "forests." Both forested areas and grassy/brushy lands got so heavily developed with houses that I'm surprised the insurers didn't stomp in earlier.

I suspect they are watching what CA insurers will do.

Keep up your vigilant work, and good luck. I've been evacuated due to forest fire, but at least the fire didn't reach our narrow canyon. It devasted one that was only one ridge away. Our road was known as the county's most dangerous in fire risk. One narrow, extremely steep road in, with no other way out.

Mildest Winter here that I can remember.... Our total snowfall so far is about a foot, we wake most mornings to a "skiff" on the sidewalk that you can brush off with a broom.... Temperatures have been mostly between -5 and 0*C, so just below freezing.... Some days we wake to -20*F, and some days it gets to about +40*F, but normal at this time of year is below freezing during the day and -10 to -15*C at night (so 5 to 30*F).... I'm actually hoping we get some snow between now and March, or we may have water problems and wildfires too close for comfort this Summer....

We drove into a completely unexpected snow event on our way to the next county. State highway crews were already scraping the road, but the snow intensified on our return trip many hours later. High temps were supposed to be in the mid- or high-30s but I doubt it got above freezing all day. Nights have been dropping into the single digits, with more coming.

Minutes after we got home, there was an accident one mile south of the road we turn onto to go home. We must've passed the site barely ahead of when the wreck happened. Whew.

It is -11 degrees F below zero this morning here in my part of central north east Minnesota.
The wind chill is around -30 F to -35 F degrees below zero.
The high today should be around +8 F.
It is supposed to warm up to +25 F tomorrow and stay there until Saturday.
After Saturday it could get even colder with daytime highs that are below zero.

We're a balmy 36* F with the typical intense mid-Winter sun.  Sunglasses are a must if you go outside; I have some Wiley-X prescription safety/sunglasses- probably the best investment I've made on anything in a long time.

We're in for wintry mix this weekend, so I'll probably be skipping a float down the James to our property.  OTOH, I can start building the frame for my newest Bad Idea, FrankenMower 2, 1st build.  My old push FrankenMower needs a carb, coil, and sparkplug, so I'll be working on it as well.

Tommy -I didn't notice you taking my picture this morning!  It was -27C (-16.6F) this morning with 25cm (10") of fresh snow to shovel. Beautiful day for skiing.
Up here we say we get 10 months of winter and two months of poor sleddin'.

The ice racing guys are happy. They can race this year. Last winter was so warm the ice on Lake Superior maxed out at 11 inches thick in a sheltered bay. They can't get insurance if the ice is less than 18 inches thick. Lake Superior ice is usually three to six feet thick around Thunder Bay and the Northern shore.

Here's a short video of Rick Mercer ice racing in Thunder Bay.

Yesterday was raw and bitter here in sunny Flarda.  I don’t have to take a boat out if the temperature is below 40 F.  We don’t want to give any tourist  hypothermia.  No one showed for the 0940 boat but I had a couple of hardy fools on the 1100. By then the temperature had risen above freezing and I knew it would be warmer out on the river.  The river is a stable temperature year round.  69. F.  The first two boats were cold enough to aggravate my frostbitten hands and I had to wear gloves but after that it improved.  Temps climbed into the high sixties this afternoon and I walked the dogs in shirt sleeves.  This is the best time of year to be in N Florida even if it is overcast, raining, and cold.

Any mass fish kills from the cold weather? I drove to that part of FL in February 2010. Camped in nothing but below-freezing temps even in Louisiana FL, until I got south of Pensacola. And it was still pouring cold rain. When I arrived at Fort DeSoto SP, the stench of the rotting fish on at least one beach was overwhelming. We all had to step carefully. It was colder in FL than it was in mid-coast ME at that time!

The river stays warm enough and it never freezes long enough here for a fish kill on the Wakulla.  The Wacissa river is longer so it is subject to fish kills but it takes at least three nights in the 20's to cause one.  I've seen fish kills and I've also seen fish stunned by the cold so that they floated to the surface.  Once the sun warmed them up a little they were able to swim away.

Damp and gloomy out but temps are in the upper 60s. I have been able to get out and do little things around the place. I adjusted the closer on the back door from the bar room. When it got wet out it didn't want to close all the way. Now it closes as it should. I also picked up a bunch of fallen debris that the rains brought down from the trees. The stick in the bottom pocket of the vinyl roll up door on one of the atv garage door broke. I had a nice long metal rod laying around and replaced it.

I suppose I can handler the cold alright having spent most of my life in the northern half of the US. What I don't like now that we live in the south is the extra cost of keeping the place warm and the pipes from freezing when it gets cold like it's about to. Down here they don't bury water lines as deep and use a heck of alot less insulation. I'll have to drip the water faucets and burn the propane and a small electric heater or 2.
I sure am glad I put that woodstove in the shop this past year. I got plenty of wood to keep it going.

I got an email from a buddy in Cajun Country and he said they had bought groceries and fuel for the Coleman stove before the bad weather starts.  They could get as much as seven to eight inches before it is all done.
I never knew anything colder than 16ºF until I moved to Tennessee.

If they rely on electric heaters, the portable Mr. Buddy Lil Buddy propane heaters would be good to have on hand. They use the small camping bottles and can take an adaptor to allow using the propane grill size of canisters (20 lbs, I think).

We bought them even when we had propane furnace and small wood stove two houses ago. In the next house (the one before we moved here), the electric heaters were out during an "atmospheric river" storm AND the propane parlor stove wouldn't ignite. The Lil Buddy heaters kept indoor temps tolerable and water pipes from freezing.

Up here in northern Canada, we are right in the middle of it. -38.5C this morning (call it 40 below since C and F are equal there). Add in a 15mph wind and you get a blistering -70.6F with the wind chill! Stay warm and safe folks and watch for hypothermia.

It's 41f right now but the wind is kickin' and you can feel the cold in it. It is suppose to reach a low of 23 by 4am then climb back up above freezing tomorrow. That looks like how it's going to be for the next week with the lowest overnight to hit 17.
Hard to believe I can drive 2 hours south and put my toes in the Gulf of Mexico.

Right around freezing now and starting to snow.  Can't really believe the sensational weather forecasts, could be between 4 to 8 inches, give or take.  Temperature will drop to below zero and the wind will kick up, but nowhere near as cold as in Minnesota or points north.  Might help the missus with some baking tomorrow, sure beats going outside.

Dang Tom... I feel like I have no right to complain at all. I think however, that you folks up there kind of expect these weather conditions and prepare for them each year.
Down here they are calling for the possibility of snow tomorrow.. as much as 2" on the ground. We have lived here for 13 years and only saw snow one time here. And that was gone almost as soon as it touched the ground. The local ADOT has zero equipment for dealing with any snow accumulation what so ever. They roll up the sidewalk and street and lock the doors. They impose travel restrictions. If you venture out for anything other than an emergency you will be ticketed, fined and towed.
Most of the homes are not designed or built to withstand extended sub freezing temps. I know folks whose water lines are only buried 6" under ground. The freeze line for foundations in only 18". We have outside water faucets the are nothing more than a plastic pipe sticking out of the ground with a hose bib on them. I pack a 5 gallon bucket with insulation to cover them.
We live in a small mobile home and the plumbing runs under it with nothing but skirting to protect it from the cold.. I drip the faucets when temps drop below freezing as I did last night.

LOL... it wasn't uphill both ways and I didn't have to do it barefoot but, I did have to walk 10 blocks to school on Walnut Blvd. which ran along the beach of Lake Erie up on the hill. I had to run from tree to tree to block the wind.
You're right... schools didn't close back then. The schools here were announced to be closed most of this week. That announcement came on Saturday. But, the kids are required to do virtual classes online. We didn't have that option back then either.

My outdoor thermometer registers "-LL.L" when the temp drops BELOW  -40. It read -LL.L at 8:00pm last night. Temp usually keeps falling until sunrise the next morning. It's 9:00am. It still reads -LL.L  I don't know how cold it got, but it's still colder than 40 below. Even the ski areas shut down.
You can be subjected to hypothermia in above freezing temperatures if you're not acclimated. Please be safe and check on family and friends.

Got the woodstove fired up in the shop and the temp is up to near 70 right now. A couple more degrees and I'll begin choking off the air feed by closing the door on the stove. That lets the fire burn lower and slower while maintaining the ambient heat. I still have a small desktop fan on a shelf that blows into the rafters and moves the warm air around.
It was around 30f in there 2 hours ago.

We will provide regular updates until the high fire risk has passed or power has been restored.

What I've been doing in preparation,...

This is my roof attic vent/stucco interface. I've done some sub-framing attached to the rafter tails. This sub-framing allows me to slip a piece of sheet metal behind the frames, and then snugly shim it into place.  This blocks the attic vents.
Today, I address the far larger gable end attic vents, to seal them off as well.
This image shows the just finished framing and sheet metal in place.  Up next: painting and caulk sealing around the new frame pieces.  There were 18 vents that needed sealing, + gable ends, for 20 vents in total.

After watching the LA fires, and how houses were catching on fire purely from the attic vents sucking in sparks and embers. I decided to make this fix.

The boat dock thermometer read 26 F when I checked it at 0830.  I canceled the 0940 boat because temps were still below freezing.  By 1100 it had climbed to 38 F.  A lady showed up with two underdressed toddlers.  I told her I would not carry her unless we could find some more clothing for the kids.  The other passengers responded generously and the kids were nice and cozy.  The young mother had never been out of south Florida before in her life.  She literally didn't have a clue.  The thermometer neve climbed above the mid forties here all day and started dropping again by 1500.  I drove the last boat as the sun was setting and once it dropped below the trees it got cold quick!  It was a 35 minute tour with me leaning on the throttle for the last ten minutes.  Of course the cold brings the manatee up river in droves.  I hit a slow one today.  With one of the Amas, not the prop.  It will have a big blue mark tomorrow from the bottom paint. ;D

Well to my surprise the boiler overheated a bit and the over presure valve had just popped. I closed the valve and watched and tended the fire until 3 am, got down to 68 in the house by 7 when I woke up again.

Betty Lou just took Boss out for a "walk about" (when you use that phrase Boss knows exactly what it means and springs into action) and came back in to inform me that the flurries have begun.
I told her that we should get our showers in case the faucet dripping don't work. She always filters and stores drinking water and we are well stocked with it.
The puddles and the outdoor dog water bowl are frozen solid. The 5 gallon water supply buckets in the shop for the 2 compressors were good to go yesterday and I'll check them today... if they are I'll just be limited to filling guns with the CS3... no biggie there. We don't drop below freezing enough around here to switch to using antifreeze.

BTW.. I just got an e-mail from the bank... our local branch will be closing in an hour.

Well the "Big Snow" of 25 never made it here.  There's some accumulation of sleet but it's all melting.

Well we dodged another one!  8)

Nice, the intense cold is gone and the warm weather is here !
It is +19°F right now ;D
I didn't even need to wear a jacket this morning when I took the dog out, just a sweatshirt.
There is an 8 mph wind coming from the south and the wind chill is around +10°F
The revised forecast for today says we might reach + 26°F
The long range forecast says we could reach +34°F by Tuesday.

Boss woke up from her cryogenics sleep and wanted to go out to take care of business. But she wouldn't go unless I went with her. I stood at the top of the ramp waiting for her and noticed the snow on the handrail was at least 4" thick. Pretty good little snow event we had there.

Flash lived up to his name for once this a.m.  He was out and in like a flash!  Belle is a Labrador retriever.   She is inured to cold.  She and Bon Bon, mom’s duck toller, love this kind of weather.

No snow here.  It’s wet and there is still a little sleet lying around in sheltered spots but it’s melting fast.

Storm in a teacup!

The memsahib lost the bet about snow. She owes me ten bucks.  I said I’ll take it out in cuddles! ;D

More lessons learned...
Drip the hot water faucets as well as the cold..  :o We got cold running water in the kitchen and the bathroom but no hot in either. So much for the morning shower. Fortunately we hit the low of the lows and we'll begin the warm up today. I'll have to remember that in 5 or so years from now when we get the next snow and freeze.
Next lesson learned...
When I built the top hat for the woodstove chimney I used a piece of fine expanding metal around the inside to keep critters out.. the problem is that the metal I used was aluminum or something with a low melting point and I think it kinda collapsed in on itself and choked some of the draw off. It's still drawing but not like it should. I'll need to wait for the ice and snow to melt before I can set the ladder and get up there to fix it. Adding to that I may have burned some wood that wasn't as dry as it should have been.. that probably sooted it up even more.
Both issues are going to wear on my nerves because there ain't no quick fixes. Wait for the water line to thaw and wait for the snow and ice to melt.
Good news is the sun is out and shining brightly and is expected to for the next several days.  Yep, that's all the winter I want for this year. Hard to believe I dealt with this kind stuff for months every year during my entire life in the north.
I used to say that I could just put on more clothes when it's cold but I can only take off so many when it's hot... I'm beginning to rethink that logic.

We got 3-4" blanket......
Low temp 15 deg..... 16hrs at or below freezing.
4 out of 5  outside faucets froze, even tho all but 1 had styrofoam covers on them and were in
outside walls of heated rooms...... 1 was in an outer garage wall....no heat inside that one.No cover
either but I had left it dripping.....apparently not enough.
I eventually got all open and flowing again...no leaks so far...(fingers crossed)

I left some of the bathroom and kitchen faucets dripping...hot and cold water..

Lots of patches of grass showing through the snow after yesterday's sunshine. It's 15f out right now with sunshine and a high of 44f predicted today. That should melt the rest of the snow. 2 more nights of below freezing temps but the daytime highs are expected to be in the 60s by Tuesday.
The faucets are still dripping so apparently no freezing in the pipes.. that's a good thing. The dripping reminds me of an old wind up clock my great grandmother had when I was a kid. She didn't believe in TV and her house was always stone quite except for that clock.

Down to 68?!?

That was the advice back in 1973. My parents kept the house (in MA) at 68 already before that.

These days, the house is t-stat controlled to rise to 66 for breakfast, dinner, and early evening. Much cooler overnight, better for sleeping.

However...and it's a big however...humid air makes even 66 feel chilly. PNW evenings felt cold even in summer due to ocean winds that blasted straight down the strait from the open coast. "Raw cold" was the term for cold and damp when I was a kid.

My chimney comes through the wall at 5' then there is 9' to get it up above the roof. I have a 10' step ladder that I can lean against the shop to reach everything. I'm going to leave the expanded metal screen out of the top hat. I think I will routinely do a clean out at the end of the season for the build up and at the beginning of the season to remove any campers. I could even put a cover over the top during the warm months to keep critters out.
Plus My chimney is only 6" pipe, much lighter to handle.

Scott, that picture sure made me a chuckle.
I have owned and driven 4x4's much of my life. My last one was a 2004 Dodge Power Wagon.
The four wheel drive will lull you into thinking you can drive much faster that you should.
Around here, it is the folks driving a 4x4 way too fast that cause a lot of the crashes.
I have seen 4x4s going up interstate 35 at around 80mph on iced over roads.
Then the next thing you see is them spinning out, then going down in the ditch and thru a chain link fence in a big spray of snow.

Mid 40s when I went to the shop at daybreak this morning. I fired up the woodstove and had it to a comfortable 70 in a little over an hour. It's 65 out now so what's in the stove will be the last feeding for today.
I had been using some light metal material as a grate and I have to flip it every burn because it would warp. This morning I ordered a 7" x 16" 1/2" thick cast iron grate that was made for the stove.

Amazon but Lowes and Home Depot have them too... same price. Our local Lowes didn't have one in stock and we don't have a HD near us.
I also got free delivery from AZ because the item met minimum price.
That said... the have many different styles and sizes. You'll probably find a better fit for your stove. This one is perfect for my little woodstove.

Shoveled snow today.  Not much, just a few inches.  Fired up the snowblower for the driveway, cleared things out a bit.  Did a sidewalk and caught a curb.  Popped a shear pin.  Brought it back to the garage and dug out a shear bolt and looked at the blower impeller.  It seems I also had a whole mess of chicken wire wrapped around the auger axles.  Clean out took a whole lot longer than I expected.  Scratching my head, I was thinking, where did that come from?  A moment later, and I remembered last winter when I got too close to the kitchen garden fence and tore out a section.  Thought I had cleaned that all out?  Apparently not. :(

Should of fixed that all in the spring, or summer, or fall.  Instead, forgot all about it, until I was forcefully reminded of it today!  There's still quite a few feet of wire wrapped around the right axle, but it's operational.  When it warms a little, I'll try to finish the clean out.  Won't be as cold as Minnesota, but tomorrow morning will be -4F, so maybe in the afternoon, when it gets to be in the 20's.  Sunday night we are due for more snow, as well as Thursday, I think.  Thinking tomorrow is the day for fixing that snowblower!

Low sixties and clear when Belle and I headed for the National Forest this morning so I wore a Polypro pullover, 511 uniform pants, jungle boots, and my Cavalry Stetson to keep my bald head warm.  100 yards from the truck I realized I didn't need the pullover.  I traded it for a camo hunting vest.  Temps had climbed to the upper sixties by the time we had walked two miles.

Supposed to be 60-ish today and tomorrow, with wind kicking up by tomorrow followed by cooling and higher winds.

We're definitely on the path to yet more drought conditions. Very low precipitation combined with warmer tempertures, exacerbated by economic and financial turmoil, are brewing a perfect storm here in this agricultural area...and elsewhere.

Good morning, Tom.  That is a great picture!
In Louisiana, we had fog often and any time of the year too.  But I don't remember the weather folks ever mentioning freezing fog.  Here in Tennessee, it happens occasionally that there is freezing fog.  Next time, I will go out and see if there is something like in your picture.

The fog showed up here in the late afternoon.  Temps in the low seventies here.  I worked in shirt sleeves.  The warmth and sunshine lured a covey of lovely young college girls out to the beach.  (Grinning) I told Kit (Who looks like a recruiting poster for the boy scouts in his uniform) to "patrol the beach".  I looked out the window a few minutes later and he was surrounded by post pubescent pulchritude.

I like helping the young fellows out whenever I can. ;D

Ditto Carter.

Got the lights hung in Charles mancave. Betty Lou got the cleaning done and Charles was very generous with payment. I ended up trading hanging the lights for the Kobalt workbench. He wants one more light hung inthe outdoor bar.. I'll just toss that into the deal tomorrow.
Not many Starlings showed up but I managed to nail one of them.
Afterwards we sat around a drank a couple beers.

Mean while in Minnesota....

I am looking at around 1-3 inches of snow this afternoon and tonight.

Friday Night and Saturday there could be significantly more snow, depending on exactly where the band of heavy snow sets up and how intense it is.
WCCO meteorologist Mike Augustyniak says the East Central Minnesota could easily see 6 to 12 inches.

Best Wishes - Tom

P.S.

Sunday Morning is forecasted to be around -4 F

Winter is officially over! ;D

Temps in the low eighties.  The gators are all out sunbathing.  The manatee have all disappeared down steam as the water warms up.  They've eaten everything they want to around the spring and now they want to move to greener pastures.  Still lots of birds and beaucoup baby gators!

The Bikinis have returned so spring is around the corner!  Scantily clad co-eds fought for sunny spots on the beach.

I cleared the snow at my place early the  morning.
The winds were calm then and the temp was around -2 F.
After I got my place done I went over to my daughter's place and did her snow.
While I was doing her place the winds started to blow hard.
I then took her in to a Dr. appointment.
On the way back at 12Pm the winds got worse and the snow started really blowing around.
Right now the winds are blowing at around 40 Mph and the roads are drifted in and very icy.
Open areas are White Out conditions.
Right now the temp is 9°F dropping to +3 and the windchill is -16°F. dropping to -25.
Tonight  I am going to sit tight and hunker down.
Then Saturday there is going to major snow storm.

Best Wishes - TRom

By the end of the work day yesterday the winds were gusting a pretty steady 48 mph,. As I head north on 151, I see nothing but dark brown cloud blowing across the highway, dirt blowing of lake Winnebago and the 1/2 mile of farm fields between the lake and highway was cutting visibility down to 500 ft or possibly less, good thing it was only for about a 1/4 mile. There were other areas similar but not as bad. Theses were even no till fields that are supposed to erode less ???

Hi James.

I went out at 12:30 to clear snow and I got back in at 4 pm.

The Official snow fall for a town 8 miles south of me was 7.3 inches.

I measured the snow depth at several different spots outside and it was running between 8 inches and 12 inches so I would say that the average was 10 inches.

Beautiful sunny day temps are 6f and may rise for a bit before it gets dark. Windchill is not a concern as winds are less than 15 mph ;)
Ok we got 2x the snow forcasted right before the storm, they were right 4 days before the storm, but changed their minds LOL  ::)
I guess I get to use the snow blower first time this year.  ;D

Temps climbing into the eighties today.  It’s a gorgeous sunny day here in Flarda!  But it’s deceiving.  Dank miasmal swamps breed vast hordes of rapacious, venomous, flying, crawling, slithering insects.  The heat and the humidity are stunning.  Crowds of scammers, swindlers, losers, and con artist flock to Flarda to fleece the swarms of gullible northerners who are lured here by deceitful advertising.

Yes it’s warm here.  But y’all should stay in your refrigerated homes.  Enjoy that cold weather before global warming turns your local into a 365 day a year parking lot for surly touridiots!

Lol...

When I last visited my old stomping grounds in central Fl. (Polk county) I realized I could never return. It's developed way more than I could have ever imagined and doesn't seem to be slowing down.

32°F and possible lake effect snow expected. I'll take it and not deal with heavy traffic or large populations  ;D

We already get them for 3/4 of the year despite having zero beaches. Contrary to common myth, CO does indeed have biting insects, too. Just not as many as FL except during "cedar gnat" season.

Hi Kris.

By the end of February things should warm up with the gain in sunshine.
This week and next week will probably be the coldest for the month.

The weather prognosticators are suggesting that the week will end with lots of rain for us.
So, today,.....
Sandbags and other forms of water direction items (large 6x6 posts laid horizontally), ditch clearing, firewood gathering.

I have a seasonal stream that flows down the north side of our property, along the property line between us and our neighbor. And, from the sound of it, this upcoming storm system will get it to flowing.
This stream used to flow where it wanted to with the previous owners, including silt deposits right up to the mud-sill, the base sill of our home..  When we bought the place, I started out by digging out the silt, and installing a foundation drain system. I then went up the property, following and learning the way that the water entered the property. I then began importing hundreds of tons of large stone, and creating a working dry creek drainage system that looks and flows like a mountain stream. It quickly moves water onward to the street.
Today,... I make sure that that dry creek stream is clear and ready to evacuate water down to the road.

My dry creek outflow drainage system:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWWNb8TEJJ4&t=4s&ab_channel=MikeFrench

This was the first rain to cause it to flow. This is in early development stage still. There are tons more stone in it now, downstream a bit lower.

I was just checking this mornings low temps through out the state of Mn.
It looks like I got off easy with the -19 F.
There were several other areas in the -30's
Brimsom Mn was the coldest with -35 F.
It is this cold because we are in another polar vortex.

The coldest that I can remember was Feb 1st 1996.
It was -46 F at my place that day and -62 F up by Duluth.
I have insulated snow bibs and a down Woolrich hooded bomber coat for when it gets real cold.
I also have -55 F ice pack boots and Will Stegier Expedition style Mucklucks.
I also have 3 pairs of serious cold weather mitts. (electric hand warmers for them too)

Rain coming tomorrow early.  Temps in the mid seventies but overcast.  I piloted one boat tour but there was no sunshine and the critters had their heads down.  If the rain comes in the early morning I'll try for some Armadillos with the Beeman Raider and the NV scope.  A rain at night always brings them out in the early morning.

We're FINALLY getting rain today. They're saying a little over.5 inches. Not nearly enough to make up for the lack of rain we've had this season. I can't believe I'm saying this but I hope we get days like this every day for the rest of the month.

I piloted the 0940 river boat tour but the rain caught us about half way through.  I saw the most wildlife I saw all day on that first trip.  I cancelled the 1100 boat about five minutes after leaving the dock when we got a lightning strike within three miles.  The boat was pretty light with only 8 passengers and she came right up onto the plane at 3,000 RPM.  We planed back to the dock at about 12 knots.  Not bad for the old cow. ;D

I canceled the next two boats because of lightning. It alternately drizzled and poured all day.  Temps in the low seventies for most of the day but a weird mist came up about 1600 and blanketed the river.  Very pretty though!

Got about an inch and a half of much need rain here. It was a good, steady rain not a frog strangler. The lightning wasn't to bad either.  Second round on Saturday and Sunday then the temps start to drop. I am back to covering up stuff again because most of the plants have started bud out their new growth and a frost will kill the new growth and put the plant into shock. I don't plant any veggies until the last frost has occurred.

Well... cold, wet, and nasty out here in central VA.

Just had 11 inches of snow early this week but it is mostly gone now.  Purportedly the 3-5 inches expected early next week is (depending on who ask) 2 feet (what on earth?) now, but that's fine.  We got our CR-V ready do whatever it needs to do.  I figure if I can use it as a logging truck for skidding trees UPHILL, it can handle a teeny wittle bit 'a snow.  Sure handled the 11 inches of the last storm like it was just some wet roads.

If somebody told me twenty years ago one of my favorite automobiles would end up being an '02 CR-V automatic, I'd have punched them in the nuggets before drop-kicking their skull clean out of their head.  Now?  I consider myself INFORMED.  When "Chucky" eventual fails an inspection due to rust, I'll be finding another 2nd-gen CR-V, preferably a manual, to fill the void and shifting Chucky to go play at the local offroading club.  Word has it a couple folks already are sporting early model RAV-4s and CR-Vs out there already.

23°F  and a 12-17 mph north wind today.
Not too bad out with all things considered.
I cleared yesterday's & last nights snow from my place and my daughters.
The 2 stage snow blower started making noise and vibrating while in drive so I parked it.
Fortunately I have a Honda single stage blower too.
I finished my place with the Honda.
I have got the garage furnace going to heat the garage up.

I want to get it checked out, fixed or replaced before the Big Cold sets in tomorrow.

Mid seventies again with the sun trying to burn through a ten tenths overcast.  The gators and the manatee can both sense the heat through the clouds and they congregate at warm spots along the river.  At the first hint of sunshine the gators are up on the banks to sunbath.  The manatee congregate in coves and eddies where the sun warms the still waters.  Beaucoup wildlife along the river today!  Because the Wakulla is fed by a warm spring the wildlife flocks here in the winter.

The sounds of strong winds and rain woke me up at 3am and the power was off. I laid there talking to Betty Lou for a few minutes making a plan to get up with a flash light and get the propane lanterns lit.
It was a bit unnerving because we live in a mobile home under the trees... large trees.  :-\
Just when I decided to get up the power came on and the wind began to die down.
I looked up the weather radar and it appears the band of storms are on their way out of the area.

Woke up at 3am. Big winds, heavy rain and no power. Within 30 minutes the wind and rain stopped and the power came back on.
Got my coffee and checked the radar.. it's pretty much out of here now.
I came out to access any damages and fired up the castin' shack for todays lead pouring.
Lots of small branches down and targets blown over.. and ALOT of standing water... enough that the toilet is slow to flush but that usually recovers in short time. This sandy area drinks it up quite well.
Welcome to lower Alabama in mid February.

Let It Snow !  The snow blower repair is all done !

After I had drained gas and tipped it up... I thought about things for a bit.
I was able to pull out the friction wheel without pulling the tires too.
I put the speed selector to the fastest setting.
That positioned the friction wheel to the far right.
I then tapped the shaft bearings out from the inside, then I slid the friction wheel shaft to the far left.
That gave me a lot of play with the shaft to cock it down.
The friction wheel came off easy after that.
Replacing the rubber ring on the friction was easy too.
I resurfaced the friction disk to restore the original finish.
I then re-assembled the parts in reverse order.
I after the crank case oil had re-settled, I fueled it up and gave it a test run.
I wanted to get this done TODAY.... before the Intense Cold sets in tonight.

11 inches of snow last week in one storm.  Then we had more than 36 hours of torrential downpour.  Then the sun came out yesterday afternoon to stop the rain.  The temperature almost got to 60.  But then the wind kicked up and we had 40-60 MPH winds from mid-day on into the evening.  Heard and saw a number of widowmakers in the woods come down- all tulip poplars.  I lost 6 sumac trees and won't miss them.  Also lost some pine branches.  As did the cedars, the locust, and the osage trees- which all dropped some deadfall. Down at the river (northern edge of our property is the south bank of the James river) we lost a black walnut to add to the grand poobah snag of multiple black walnuts.  That section of river is one of the sweetest honey-holes in a couple miles either direction for smallmouth.  Gar, Smallmouth, and catfish aplenty- all thanks to some trees that got undercut and fell on the riverbank.

The wind is relatively mild today; 5-10 mph gusts and I'm not hearing the cracks and pops of limbs breaking.  Luckily, I think we've been downgraded from 2 feet of snow in this next round of weather down to 5-7 inches.  Still chilly out- currently 38.

Yep, the cold is here and the snow will get here eventually.

We lost about 200 yards of our "backyard"- the James River is up about 17 feet; our riverbank sits ~ 13 feet up.  We have a culvert on an access road to our neighbor's boatramp; the ramp itself has mounds on either side that sit ~ 5 feet up and only the extreme tops of those mounds was visible.  The culvert was underwater and it sits 15 feet above the river, so yeah, we got some water flow.

After checking it out yesterday. I spent an hour at dusk redirecting excess flow from a mini-ravine that drains our upper fields.  Instead of going down the access road, it should just cross it into the fields' ditch-line.  Mother Nature is definitely in charge, though.

Poured rain all day.  Temps on the low forties.  I piloted four river boat tours today.  Three in a downpour.  The cold has drawn the manatee back up river to the spring and it was "challenging"  spotting them in the dark water in time to avoid them.  The touridiots were ecstatic.  I was soaked through my foul weather gear by the end of the second tour and I flirted with hypothermia for the rest of the shift.  Home now with a toddy made off thick cocoa, coffee, and rum. :D

Your weather often matches mine, with a little more warmth. Earlier forecasts had predicted cool wind and precip for Thursday. All precip has been dropped from the 5-day outlook. Today was awfully mild for February, a bad omen for water supplies.

I went out to bring the bag of dogfood in from the truck as well as a few other tool related stuff that needed to be unloaded. Overcast and high sixties all day.  The alligators make a pretty good thermometer.  The river is spring fed so it's 69 F all year long.  When the temps are below 68 the gators will stay in the river with perhaps their heads and the scutes along their backs exposed.  Much below 60 F and they expose only their heads.  Below 50 F the only expose their eyes and nostrils.  Below 40 F they get real sluggish and they will lie on the bottom for ten to fifteen minutes at a time only surfacing for a quick breath.

We've got 4 fixed wing water tankers flying across us this afternoon. It seems that Camp Pendelton Marine Base has started a fire today, and all hands are on deck.

It is closer than I thought.
https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/north-county/crews-respond-to-vegetation-fire-near-santa-margarita-river-trail/
There is a hiking trail that comes up a canyon/river bottom. Part of it is at the end of our street. It is a very steep canyon area with lots of chaparral brush to burn.

We've also had quite a few wildland fire fighting trucks (really large all-wheel drive trucks) rolling past us this morning.

One of the fixed wing tankers turning back away from the fire zone:

Well it's looking like we're going to get snow Thursday and Friday 😁. Of course the wife has an appointment on Thursday.😕 I love this, we go through almost all of winter with nothing and now we are going to get some winter weather.

I hear ya.

My husband had minor surgery scheduled on a day when a big snowstorm was forecast. It didn't pose trouble on our way TO the appointment but the storm had hit with full force by the time we came back up the steep dirt road to our even steeper driveway. The county had plowed once already, creating a nice tall wall at the entrance. After I started one time to pass through, I immediately decided to BACK down onto the main plowed road, continue uphill past our driveway to a wide turnaround spot, and use gravity to assist getting over the hump. My husband was literally yelling at me to just gun the engine and ram the vehicle through, risking a high-center "stuck" on what might be icy hardpack under the top layer.

I yelled back that ramming would be stupid. Did it my way, successfully and harmlessly. The only reason I restrained myself from saying, "Told ya so!" was because he had just had surgery. That was two homes ago. Here, the county does not plow our road at all, and that's actually a good thing.

So now the big snow melt-off begins. (again)
The temps are predicted to reach the 40 F range today and continue on through this week.
I'm back to the drawing board so to speak...before this early March snow storm hit I was close to being snow free.
I am keeping my fingers crossed and hopefully this will be the last major winter snow storm for March this year.
If we can get through the rest of March without any more major snow storms then we should be home free.
I have only seen one big snow storm in April .... but that one..... was a real doozy.
A blizzard hit on April 13 thru 16 in 2018 and dropped 18 inches of snow.
That year the lakes stayed frozen over until mid May.
Ice out that year was May 16th.

Tom, our worlds are so different.
When I was a child, our property was divided by a drainage canal.  A few times over the years, before I left home, I remember that canal freezing over.  Once it stayed frozen for about three days.  That was a big WOW for us.  The ice was not thick enough to walk on though.  Guess how I discover that fact!   :o
I hope you are soon able to see your grass sprouting.

Well winter finally hit last night. We probably have around 3-4 inches of snow and it's still snowing. Temp is hovering around 32f so we'll see how long it sticks around. Suppose to warming over the next few days so it'll probably be gone by Sunday. This is the first real snow in close to a year.

This morning in my part of Minnesota, it is 30°F outside.
The wind is from the south at 7 mph.     The wind chill = 23°F
It is supposed to be sunny today with a high of 50°F.   ;D
We will be doing some serious snow melting today from the March 4th to 5th Blizzard.

Rained all day.  That means that after midnight the Armadillos are gonna party in the pasture!  A soaking rain brings the worms, grubs, and crawfish up near the surface.  The Dillas’ will dine tonight!

Probably unmolested by me.  >:(

I’ve got a good, covered shooting station under one of the neighbor’s open tractor sheds.  I’ve already got a chair and a tripod set up there.  My right arm is in a sling but I’m a lefty.  I’m pretty sure I can handle the Beeman Raider even with the NVD on it.

The problem is the memsahib is riding me like a rented mule.  She won’t hardly let me out of this chair.  I know she ain’t gonna let me go Armadillo hunting at 0200 in the rain. :(

Weather?
Well it seems like it was 11 degrees F only about 3 weeks ago.
Three or four days ago we had 50 plus mph winds here.
Then this morning,
( spoiler alert everyone is okay 👍.)

This morning at 5:03 AM a strong hailstorm came over, the sound was thundering loud. The wind was crazy strong. I opened the front door to the shop, then closed it because ice and rain was blowing in. Then I heard a extremely loud sound like a freight train.
I tried to open the door again and I couldn’t pull it open. Then two windows blew out. The freight train noise was so loud that I didn’t even hear the windows breaking, and exploding.

It was a tornado that passed directly over us.

When I got to the house everyone was okay.
Six windows blown out in the house and two in the shop.
Every house in the area lost all windows on the west side of their house.
This happened so fast, like one minute.

I hope that everyone is okay there too.

Hunter

Of all the severe weather phenomena I've experienced, hail has been the worst. Tornadoes have been nearby a few times in the region where I used to live but never passed right over. While driving somewhere, I have literally changed course en route or picked a place to wait out a tornado before driving through a high risk zone. This happened both on the way to and on the way back from FL and GA.

We get the equally misnamed cedar gnats, mostly in late May and June, but sometimes for longer than that. But they are much smaller bugs (inflicting intensely itchy bites).

Actually they occur twice a year just depends on the weather. First wave is usually April to June, the second wave occurs around late August to October. Some years they go stupid, other years it's just a light dusting. You don't wash your windshield in the middle of a bug blizzard you won't be able to see where you are going. Best thing to get them off is using those Mr. Clean or similar magic erasers. It won't damage the clear coat and completely remove the greasy, acidic bug guts off. Nothing eats them they taste so bad. You don't ride a motorcycle in them either , I will leave the rest to your imagination.

This storm kind of fizzled out around here. Did get the rain but not the vegetative fallout that usually comes with these fronts. I did get the old snag down with help of the wind yesterday without trouble so now that part of the yard is safe again. I have one more to take down but it's in a place that won't do any damage for now. The tree is pine and the heart of it is full of fat lighter so it will be cut up for kindling.

It was 40ºf this morning.
Kitty was howling at the rear patio slider door, wanting to go out at first safe-light (we're in coyote land).  I opened the door, and she bolted.
While I was getting her kibble and water together, she went for the available water.  This is where it gets a bit chilly.

She has three ceramic/glass water bowls out on the patio, all within 5' of each other.  Two of those are right immediately next to each other.
Does she go for those water bowls?
Nope.
We've had rain this week, and, I've been placing water vessels in various locations drip points, to capture water to use on plants behind the roofs drip line, one of which is an antique large copper pot, a "cowboy cook pot" (sarges descriptive title).  That large copper pot likely holds five gallons of water.
Kitty loves that copper water bowl. And she has her way of drinking from it.
remember,.... its a 40º morning that she is dipping her foot into,....

dips foot into water - licks water from foot:

42F and partly cloudy with a high of 46 and rain expected.

I had to go into PC for a donation appt. and left the house early before the rain started, I still don't have wipers fixed on the truck yet and it's a pain in the rain to drive. Made it safely, donation done and the weather has been nice the rest of the day. Didn't get much rain here I had water everything this afternoon. Temps are going to be in the upper 30's for tonight so it's back to heating the house again. So much for the power bill this month.

Title: Re: Your weather
Post by: Nvreloader on March 28, 2025, 11:04:09 AM
I thought that spring was beginning to show, as the hard blowing winds were getting less and less per day, last week I had several days of slightly warmer weather, 60+ and even got up into the low 70's,
then up popped an 80* then 78* days.

Yep, spring has awoken, even seen a couple of Robins around the place and taking a spring bath in the guzzler, then for the last 4 days it has been blowing winds up to a steady 40/50 mph and then it really decided to get with it yesterday, clocked over a 120 mph on top the hill at Palacedes with a steady winds of over 50 mph for most of the day, threw the valley.

Now, I wake up to low hanging clouds that are showing that the winds are not finished yet, and it looks like some more wet weather is blowing in, which we really need....
I guess I'll curl up with a good L'more and read some more, and I have the coffee pot on,
ymmv

Spent part of the night in the storm shelter [aka the walk-in closet].  The weather folks on TV were tracking a tornado about 15 miles from us.  Lucky for all that it didn't touch down.  There was plenty of light and sound show that accompanied the heavy rains.  The rain is still falling; and the retention pond behind my home has standing water.  This rain should continue all morning, as a cold front is working its way through Middle Tennessee.
Side note:  NOAA radio is off line because there is some problem with the tower that serves our area.  Supposedly, the problem will not be repaired anytime in the near future!  >:(

There is a 30% chance we could get 12 + inches of snow. ( That would be quite an April Fool's joke )
I have the snowblowers all gassed up and ready to go.

Best Wishes - Tom

I have been stuck here in Bethel since Saturday due to weather being foggy with on off snow, weather that has been cancelling flights. One of the shuttle drivers said people have been stuck in town since Friday.

It was necessary to put out the sprinklers to insure that it rains!  The last couple of storms have slid north of us and our garden is dry.

Sometimes it is necessary to make a sacrifice to the sky spirits.  Usually they can be appeased by leaving hand tools on the garden bench but if they are feeling surly I've resorted to leaving power tools out.

Unseasonably warm, windy, dry, pollenacious. The junipers are shedding copious yellow "dust" that the wind keeps circulating.

I usually just stay still where I am until it stops shaking. I was looking at the book shelves around me and listening for my wife's reaction at the other end of the house. She stayed calm too and did say anything until we talked about the animals reaction afterwards. The cat actually spent about 45 minutes looking under everything in the house after it was over, like she was looking for what ever THAT was! LOL.

The weather here is great and has been for a couple of weeks now.

And that's bad.

Out in the swamp huge hordes of crawling, flying, biting, insects are hatching.  The better the weather the worse the bugs.  The sand nats and mosquitos have already started.  And the yellow flies have arrived.  Bottles of insect repellent have appeared and the memsahib rooted out our "bug suits".  When the flies are bad we go around bundled up like bee keepers.  Head veils and gloves are a necessity.

We've just been really windy- more so than normal.  We had 20-45 knot winds yesterday, and 15-30 knots today.

Coming back from DMV in Appomattox yesterday to register my new-to-me OBS Chevy- a tree came down a couple hundred yards in front of us- might have been really bad for us but it hung up in a tree across the road.  Anybody in a lifted truck coming from the opposite direction might have problems, but I really don't like driving under hangers regardless.  VA Route 604 in Buckingham County is a pretty drive but... No ditches to speak of, no shoulder along most sections, no painted lines, and barely wide enough for 2 normal width cars.  Such is life in middle-of-nowhere, VA.  But the heavy rains we had a couple weeks ago followed by more a few days ago combined with the incessant winds have made us hyper-vigilant when it comes to trees.  We've lost several on our property but they were dead trees we were reluctant to take down due to conditions.  Now that Ma Nature has pitched in and brought them down, easy-peasy.

We already cut the field once; I salvaged a 27hp Craftsman mower abandoned a few lots down after the lot owner asked if we wanted it.  It's been handy for pulling some of the hung trees down.  Interesting mower- no deck, dual range 3 speed for 6 gears forward and 1 reverse, implement tires in the back, and a 27hp engine.  All it took was a new battery and cleaning the carb and fuel system, then replacing a rotten section of line coming off the tank.

Take the sears number on it and see what all came with it. If it's the one I am thinking it is, it's the heavy duty garden tractor that came with a 54" deck mower and various implements for garden work.

The weather here was cloudy with occasional sprinkles with a high of 60°F, and a very sleight breeze.

There was not enough sprinkles to ever get anything completely wet.

Like Buffet sang.  The weather is here. . . . .

It raining wooly caterpillars.  It’s not a joke.  There are some nasty insects in this part of the world but the wooly caterpillars are the worst!  Very toxic with long term neurological damage.  They fall from the oak trees and if I sit in one spot long enough I’ll find one crawling on me.

Yep, it's time of the year for the white tussock moth caterpillar to start raining down. I have seen some nasty allergic reactions to them. You will get blistered from them.

Pleasant temperature but too dry!  The two inches of rain we got two days ago percolated straight down in about an hour.  Fortunately it filled all of our cisterns and now we have about five hundred gallons of rain water we can release over the next few days and augment the well water.

Looks like it could be relatively cool and dry for the next few days. It rained all but one day of our 5 day trip to Ohio and I managed to get my forehead and neck sunburned. I didn't even realize it was happening until it was too late. My BIL has a deck on the cabin near his pond on his property. We set up targets across the pond and shot airguns all day Friday.. the only sunny day.
I think we may be getting a new member and shooter here on the GTA soon.

I hope our local weatherman is upside down as usual. He just said 50% and higher chance of rain throughout the week.
Just in case, I should probably get the mowing done today. I mowed before we went out of town last Wednesday but the grass went crazy while we were gone.
I can find plenty to do in the shop and Castin' Shack for the week so that part don't really bother me if by chance, he is correct.

Pouring cold rain again. We got 0.4" each day on Sunday and Monday, and today will exceed that. Got pelted by small hail on a very short walk yesterday. That prompted me to shoot indoors.

Here in NC. the wind has become a constant. I don't know how agriculture will do this year. We've had so many overcast days this spring, my fruit trees didn't make many buds. Even when it's not cloudy there's a haze in the sky. Well see how the garden does.
