Another question thrown out to y'all enablers ;D
I have a major skunk issue around my house and long story made short, the layout doesn't allow long range sighting and shooting. Cars, wood pile, trailer, shed, fence...
I'm pretty much stuck in a cramped space 'tactical' situation.
Believe me I would rather deal with those with some comfortable distance between us, as you can imagine. It's just not possible. Traps don't work because my dogs torment the skunks and end up smelling for weeks themselves, plus I still have to dispatch those critters. I had to trash my clothes and my skin was raw for days on my last skunk safari... I'm not even gonna talk about the smell outside, you know how that goes.
I have looked at the P-rod, but its 15fpe don't seem enough for skunks, even at such a close distance. I don't know if they can be modded high enough for my needs, and I have no clue how to do mods at this point.
I also looked at the Atman air pistols. They are out of my reach financially at the moment, and they seem to offer little more oomph at 19 fpe than the m-rod... at least on paper.
Here is where I'm making an appeal to your guys: what would work best in your opinion for that need in a very reasonable price range? I am not after a huge shot count, just quick acquisition and one shot dispatching.
Edit: I posted in PCP because I am set for PCP with 4500 psi air compressor and carbon fiber tanks. I am after a PCP solution, not a pumper or break barrel...
-
I'm guessing that you meant P-Rod, not M-Rod in your post. I would want something big and slow. A .25 in the 30 fpe range would be a good option. A low power tuned .25 M-Rod or Avenger would probably be my first choice.
-
I'm guessing that you meant P-Rod, not M-Rod in your post. I would want something big and slow. A .25 in the 30 fpe range would be a good option. A detuned .25 M-Rod or Avenger would probably be my first choice.
You are correct, I meant the P-rod. I just updated my first post to reflect that. thanks for pointing it out.
Regarding your suggestions, regular length rifles do not work at all for my specific need. I will have to aim and shoot in very narrow places, including between or under vehicles close to each other like in a parking lot, between spaces as narrow as a hallway, between and under workbenches, crates, lumber piles... You name it..
The springer I used did not work well and was 42" long, same as an avenger for all intended purposes. I am hoping to find something significantly shorter and manouverable. I am first looking at pistol size, then maybe carbine/bullpup. I don't know what exists and people often come up with suggestions I never knew existed.
I can run a search at Pyramyd Air, but there are gems that are only on the used market now, and some imported only by 'smaller' resellers.

Ronin, do you have a maximum budget in mind?
Maybe you could look for a deal on a lightly used EdGun Leshiy, one of those would fit the bill nicely!

If you can still find one, a .25 Evanix Rex pistol would be a good option or even a .22.

Answer 1: according to several Youtube videos of live skunks getting shot (fascinating BTW) they say head shots may cause spraying while heart/lung shots do not. Something about the skunk not identifying any threats despite being shot in the vitals, whereas a head shot creates uncontrolled nerve firing, including the ones regulating their scent glands.
Answer 2: normal rifle too long? Get an Akela... ;D

Airforce TalonP, there's no substitute for pure hunting power.
TalonP fitted with a moderator is a very effective hunting gun, compact, lightweight, and really only need to be filled to 2900 psi.

Charlie, I was expecting you to present the Akela on that one, believe it or not! I did think about it, but it doesn't seem the best fit: It requires 2 hands and it is still on the longish side at roughly 33". I have ideas ( see below) that are a better fit on both accounts.
Thanks also for the video on skunks, I did not even think about checking how to shoot them best. It just did not cross my mind. I thought head shot.
Ronin, do you have a maximum budget in mind?

I sadly have a limited budget in mind. I am married and want it to stay that way. ;) If budget hadn't been an issue, I tought the Lelya was the shortest bullpup. I'll just checked and saw the next Leshiy. Man those are sweet! in any case, they are way out of my radar/league for now.

Yes, I concur so far. I saw that one as my most likely 'best fit' from a search of the most obvious websites. .25 cal pistol. Loud without a moderator, but I don't care at that point. I did not mention it as I did not want to steer the conversation in a specific direction. (to be 100% honest, I wasalso hoping for a cheaper option )

That new $300 Avenger might be the cheapest way out. Those who have them already are claiming great accuracy (relative terms). That gun is regulated, so as long as you can pump above the regulated setting you'll be able to shoot a plenty. 25 caliber would be my choice. Yes, a heart shot will drop them very quickly with very low risk of spraying.

Keith, I love the avengers and I have one in .22 coming in a couple of weeks ;D, but I know its dimensions won't work at all for my specific purpose. If I could make it a semi bullpup, maybe, but I'm not keen on tackling such a project atm...

Okay, I didn't realize you were looking for a 'truck gun' of sorts. There are a number of bullpups and smaller gun platforms out there. Hope you find what you are looking for. I have popped a few with my .22 Marauder. Shot placement is the key.

Keith, I have just come to realize that shot placement is everything. If heart or lung shot is what I'm after, some people have advised to use pellets that would zip through the heart rather than going for knock down power as to not startle them and avoid spraying.
If that is the case, I may be able to use a .22 with zippy pellets. if past experience is any indication, I'm going to shoot 95% of them within 20 feet, so accuracy will be there no matter what.

They are gonna stink no matter what. I have had lots of experiences having had a yorkie that thought they were just dogs his size.

I totally agree with you: they are gonna stink no matter what. That is sadly a given: I'm no expert, but my personal experience shows a 100% failure in that regard with the 5 skunks I have killed to this day.
The last 2 ones, though, sprayed everything they had before I could even shoot them. That stuff burns insulation foam like crazy by the way. Not that it matters as I had to remove the panels and patch the area due to the smell... I also had a recliner in my garage/workshop area and to the dump it went also due to the spray.
But what I am trying to achieve is to get dead skunks with the minimal kind of stink possible. Before they get in my garage (fool me once...)
What I am good at is grabbing a shovel and scooping up those dead skunks super fast and tossing them super far. If you have tried, you know it's actually not that easy to do... ;D For the one shot kills, there's room for improvement as the saying goes ::)
-
I have done this for pay. Be for warned a skunk can pee the twenty feet your talking. MAN , you don't want that. Lung shot , with out hitting or breaking any bones, no smell. I'd rather trap them , either foot or live trap. I made a injector so to speak . Put them down instantly. Corse my method is not as much fun as shooting. But , will clear the area with no one the wiser.

With skunks, it’s not they MAY spray if shot in the head (or spine), they WILL spray. If you need a truck type gun, on the low price end I would recommend the Artemis P15 in .22. I would not recommend it in .25, because it will not likely end up being low priced. In a mid range price, the AGT Vulcan BPS would be hard to beat. Hint-buy it at Krale in the Netherlands.
Heart/lung shot only. Stay off the head, stay off the spine, stay off the shoulder. I don’t use traps or poisen. Too great a chance to hurt someones pet.
-
Kral Puncher Breaker. Compact BP, won't break the bank. Known for good barrels. The 1st gen had some issues but Kral resolved those. BTW, Kral appears to be making the 3 new Crosman guns (Akela and the other 2). The NP-01 by Kral is a contender as well. It is a compact pistol with a carbine stock. I'm certain one in .22 using NSAs or FX Hybrid slugs would solve the stink-problem with heart-lung shots.
Regarding the Leshiy and Lelya- I own both in .25 (plus several .22 barrels for the Leshiy). Should you ever go down the EdGun path, you will find these guns are more than worth the coin you spend. I've taken several pest birds (English House Sparrows and Starlings) at ridiculous distances for me using the .22 350mm barrel and NSA slugs shooting under at only 650 FPS at the muzzle and the slugs simply ignored crosswind. However, with both currently set up using .25 barrels my girlfriend and I have trimmed pinecones at 50+ yards shooting into Canaan Valley from a ridge while shooting freehand. The EdGuns are tools to be used and are far more durable than pretty much anything else made.
I advise checking out Krale-Schietsport and Aceros-de-Hispania. Both websites are in the EU and both had solid reps here. Mundilar is another I've heard good things about but I have not yet ordered from them.
Edit: looks like Norica has finally gone down the PCP pathway- similar looks on the side-lever Viriatus to the Cometa Orion Advanced bullpup, where the Darkbull from Norica is vaguely SPA-ish but looks to be a straight "charging handle bolt" cocker. Norica is using LW barrels and the general quality is good on their stuff.
Lobo makes the Hound bullpup, and Walther has the Reign. All these are gonna run more than $700 though.

The best skunk limiter is a wire trap , cat food a black drap ( not plastics) cover trap put in a bugie for a ride to a swimming hole no smell no fuss and best of all “ works every time”.
-
You can buy a no spray skunk trap for $75-85. That's a whole lot cheaper than buying a PCP, that's still going to get your yard sprayed as often a not. After caught, it's your choice of what to do.
-
Ronan
I realize you have already looked at the P-rod, however for the situation you describe, it seems well suited. You can adjust the stock configuration to give you several higher power shots, with just an allen wrench. It's compact and best of all it's light. They show up in the classifieds for $250 - $300 depending on the work done to them.
If you are going for a heart/lung shot from 20 yards or less I think it would do the trick. I have several nicer, more expensive rifles, but always seem to grab my P-rod. It's odd but it's my favorite.

My neighbor had that issues when leaving the garage door cracked for the cats to access their food bowls. Of course the skunk and the burglar liked the cracked door also. You can maybe put some food out at the corner of your lot to draw them in for better shot placement and takedown?

Sadly, traps are a no-go for me. first, my dogs torment the skunks trapped. and the stink is total. Moreover, I end up with dogs smelling extremely bad for over a week and still have to dispatch the skunks after that. My dogs are over 100 lbs each (one is pure Great Pyrenees mastiff, the other his son, Great Pyr - German Shepherd mix) My wife loves her dogs and I don't want to do that to her.
Mike, I did not consider the P-rod, that is great news if it is indeed enough at a very short range. I'll consider it!
Keith, I may be able to do that to some extent, but any food will first and foremost attract my own animals.
Peter, Carl, thanks for the suggestions, It's like discovering a new word to me! I do see an issue ordering form Krale, though. No matter how well I looked at the acceptable shipping destinations, I did not see the USA. I saw Canada and the U.S virgin islands, but not the continental U.S... Did I miss something? I can always shoot them an E-Mail, but it seems easier to just run it by you :)

Use worm castings or worm tea in a spot. The skunks love that smell and is what they forage for. I had to quit using those items in my garden because the skunks come in a dig for worms that aren't there, but the worm smell sure is.

Thanks a lot Keith, that may well be my ticket to a non smelly resolution!
Ok, I'm now officially an idiot:
Now, the Krale shop shipping issue to solve, and I'm all 'enabled' :)
I did not pay realize that I was on "Rest of The world". I saw the "United states" selection on top, and all my issues are resolved.. Except for the brain farts...

Take something with just enough power to lung shoot the animal right behind the shoulders. Don't want to break any bones , don't cuase any pain. Be very calm when approaching the animal , talk gently to it. After the shot slowly back away. If done right the animal will not spray. In a powder burner talk , all the power that is needed is a cb cap for a 22 cal. Remember , no pain. The way you guys are carrying on , you'll be having some fun.

Thanks chuck, I see a significant number of voices mentioning that power is not the best solution at such a close distance. Accuracy seems to be my best friend/ tool for a humane and somewhat odorless kill.

I have shot skunks straight in the head with NO spray at all,i have shot them in the heart/lungs and had no spray at all,i have also had them spray with head shots and heart/lung shots.skunks around my house do not damage or harm anything but sometimes they do smell.at this time I give passes to skunks that come into my yard for it is sometimes my fault as to why they showed up at all.if I leave food from grilling or chicken bones out they come,i burn my trash and must be sure all trash is burned to keep them away.just the other night while on bandit patrol I encountered a young skunk and was within 10-15 feet from it will no discharge of smelly stuff,i have a video of a skunk passing by me at close distance almost stepping on my toes as it passed by.i have also caught and released skunks from a live trap without any smell at all, they fell for the lee's chicken bones as bait.
getting back on track, hit them with as much force as you can if you want to dispatch them.a rifle in 25 cal with open sights will help for the short shots...good luck...

Krale does ship to the USA. I bought 2 guns from them last month, an Artemis P15 in .22 and a .30 Uragan. You do have to send them a copy of your ID. Me too brain fart. Saw your follow up post. If you’ve never bought from Krale, prepare to be amazed. Ordered the Uragan on a Friday. It was at my door on Monday. The Artemis took one more day. They put all US vendors to shame. I buy everyhing I can from them. They cannot, however, ship FX to the US.
-
Having tangled with a skunk in close quarters I was also gonna suggest something with open sites, much easier to acquire your target. Trying to find a skunk in a scope at close range is a bit of a challenge, had one chase me up my driveway one evening between my car and truck, was ready to jump into my truck bed if he kept coming but made an offhand shot sighting down the side of the barrel and turned him into the neighbor's yard. Stupid skunks here will come right at you, that or it was rabid?
-
If you all want to shoot skunks , Figure out how to keep them from stamping there feet, skunks must have back feet on ground to release perfume .When feet wiggle and tail Up stiff to late😩😩😩😩😩😂😂😂😂

Lol! that is a great idea. I could set it up away from anything and I have all the electronics, servos motors to make a remote system like that, as long as the trigger pull isn't too stiff.
I would need to find a super cheap, cruddy, used air rifle for that, though. The smell stays forever.

I have a Hatsan AT-P2 in .25 out of the box did 15 shots at 23FPE with 2.5% ES, 2 spring turns made a korean cliff starting at 30FPE ten shots to 23FPE.
1/2 unf barrel with large LDC makes it a perfect yard gun, thumps and is quiet. It is an AT-44 variant so super common parts, you can even get a lefty grip.
AT-P1 is the same without adjustable stock and refurbs can be had, on occasion, for $129 at Hatsan's site (got lucky and picked one up in .177 does 13 shots at 10FPE).
It is no EDgun, but bang for buck is amazing.

Closeout going on right now for those at good prices. .25 is all gone, though. .22 and .177 still available, if someone is interested!

You read my mind. ;)
Cranked up a bit, I think a Prod would be an ideal gun for the purpose. Red dot and flashlight for use at night.
And after the skunks are handled, you have a versatile gun that can be configured any way you want. :D

With so much different advice, I'm unsure in which direction to go for the skunks. I'm 'bailing out' of sorts for the moment and will try to lure them in a place where I'll be able to dispatch them with the Avenger.
If that works, I'll spend my money on the Akela asap.
In any case, I have a request pending with Wes regarding the Artemis PP750. I discovered the opportunity when it wasn't one anymore, but I'm keeping my money for that one if by chance he ends up with one extra with US specs .

To the O.P. I didn`t read through the entire thread because I have to leave for work in a few minutes. I gather from your first post you are not aware of Conibear traps, a body gripping trap that kills. One of these placed in a den entrance and you will wake to a dead skunk, most of the time without odor. They are not hard to set and the cost is not bad. I taught a friend to set one and instructed him to set it after his small dogs were in for the night and to remove it before they were set out in the mourning to avoid an accident. He caught three skunks in three nights, no stink, problem solved.
The number 110 Conibear is what you want. Good luck.

Thanks rick, I indeed wasn't aware of that type of traps. More options are always great!

Thane, what is your opinion of the semiauto Hatsan Sortie Tact? I was lusting after one but they're never available in the refurb section
I have a Sortie in .177, it is a lot of fun, but difficult to tune and even harder to keep quiet.

Thank you sir, the "harder to keep quiet" part about nixes it for me. Too bad, I thought being a semiauto pistol was very cool and I always liked the foldup mini-carbine concept.
