Another Rat Shooting Video

Its early November here on the East Coast and the weather is still fairly nice allowing me to shoot rats. I using my Hatsan AT44 10 in .22 cal. and ATN X-Sight to get the job done. I did not do a lot of editing and I show some hits and misses. Also the date and time on the bottom right of the video is wrong. Anyway I just opened a YouTube account which allows me to upload longer and better quality videos than photo bucket. I hope the link works and you enjoy the action. Bill

Awesome setup. The ATN X-Sight is an all in one camera night vision? You need better pellet placement for a clean kill. Aim between the ear and eye for head shots. Body shots go for the heart/lung area.

Google "hunting shot placement" and practice shooting paper targets at different distances. Mark the distances on a small piece of paper or on your smart phone if you have one. Keep it with you or memorize it. Zero should be the distance where you do your most hunting. There is a lot of good info on GTA about pellet placement for hunting.

Hi Bill,

Over in UK we use liquidised cat food as a bait, not too runny. Best to prepare it when your wife/partner is out of the house! Put it in an empty plastic drink bottle and squeeze out dollops in your chosen ratting area. It brings them out in the open, they can't run off with it so it keeps them still lapping it up for an accurate shot. I understand that liquidised fish pellets also work.

Thanks for the compliments. Sam the ATN X-Sight is all in one sight with onboard video. The main down side to the sight is it is about 2.3 lbs and sits high on the rail. I used ChairGun to set-up the range for a kill zone of .60" and point blank zero is approx. 20 yards to 40 yards. I am still learning the hold over/under for precision shots. The close shots at 15 yards and under require more calculation for hold over but I am learning. I am using the H&N Hunter Extreme Pellets and while they probably don't expand much on impact they do cut a nice wound channel through the rats. I could see this when sighting the pellets on paper acting like a wad cutter pellet. If the rat will hold still I will take a head shot but I know when I hit them in the chest area they will not last long. Also a lot of the bouncing around of the rats when shot in my opinion is the nervous system shutting down. The main thing for me is the results are dead rats which the farmer loves. I've already given him the videos and he's very happy to say the least. At this time after four shoots I'm up to about 45 rats killed. Any way this night time rat shooting is a blast to me. Real nice setup Bill, perfect for ratting. Thanks for posting a review on you-tube its my first time seeing a night vision scope in action. I live next to a few farms so I know the importance of removing rodents/feral pigeons/vermin from food supplies. The more guys we have eliminating diseased vermin without the use of poisons the better.

Great advice. For chipmunks I use chicken skin/bones/scraps soaked in the fat then put a  thin layer on a paper plate. This way they cant run off with it. Fried fish is another form of rodent crack. Once a chipmunk gets some back to the den its game on, like a video game they just keep coming. The negative I had with the above bait is it attracted skunks. So now I put news paper or plastic down then the plate so its easy to clean up.
