Face to face with wiley coyote!

So there i am. Went out with my spotting scope. Saw a rat very clearly so i grabbed my condor slapped on the nvg scope and it hits true at 40 yds. Went out and sat on a nice rock in my back yard that over looks most of the property. After sbout 5 minutes i saw the big rat in the same spot. Could not get a good shot so i sat there. Next thing you know i hear something bigger moving in the brush. I start scanning then there it is! 20 yds away! Looking right at me. A mutha stinking yote! I put the crosshairs just above the eyes and let the jsb fly! Figured at the range 42 fpe would pay the bills. Solid pop and the sucker ran. Sounded like a garbage truck running through the trees. Sat ther for about 15 minute with the heart racing then about 30 more. Just listening. Need the benelli with a spot light now to go get it. Only problem my shot gun is in florida! Nothing but the 40 cal here. Also didnt think about the angle. Was slightly ownward.  Compensated for the range but not the angle! Poop. I probably popped it through the eye but not the brain. DANG IT! man i was shaking right afte the shot. Will go get it in the am. What a night!

I hope you find him. However, if he ran with a head shot, I would think he is still alive.

Running means the pellet missed the brain.  Hopefully you severed an artery and he is down.  I hope you find him.

I would dial the Condor up to 60+ FPE with Kodiak/Baracuda or heavier pellets/slugs for Coyote hunting.

As soon as he bolted i knew i missed the brain. Man i dont like messing up. I grabbed my 40 cal and a flashlight but did not find it last night will go back out here in a few minutes.

Will have the cf tank on for the next time. Was set up for rats last night and sitting just over 40 fpe. Next time the rats will get a full power shot too that way i know i will be ready for the next yote also.

I really hope you find him.  He might have made it back to the den and died.  Their dens are usually well concealed and without a blood trail it would be very hard to locate.

I do hope he finds him too. However, a coyote(or any animal for that matter) running with a head shot is probably going to have a very slow death.

I have to admit that in reading this I learned something.  I always figured that if I had to dispatch a yote at close range, my 21fpe Disco would be up to the task, but now I'm really having second thoughts.

BUT, you better have a CLEAN side profile head shot, aim like on a rabbit, between the ears and eyes.  Or a head down, X between the ears and eyes, center of brain. IF you don't have either of those shots, pass. And preferably be 20 yards, or better yet a little less. This one was taken at 15.

Perfectly said. You have to know when to shoot or when to wait for the right time. Its easy to get caught up in the moment and get it wrong. If you make a mistake then learn from it and keep from being in that position again and thats about all you can do.

Well to be honest, I have no interest in hunting them really.  The only reason I'd take a shot at all is if it was in my yard and under some such circumstances that it was necessary, which isn't too likely.  It's on my mind though, as there are more and more in the neighborhood and they are getting less and less afraid of people.  It was a bigger concern when I used to let my dog out at night to do her business, but she passed back in August.  That hit me so darn hard I'm not sure I'll ever get another, so it's probably not going to be a problem any time soon. 

As to my gun's penetration, it's surprising for how low the power's currently set.  I returned from a hunting trip last week and had an empty iso-butane canister from my stove.  I punctured it to ensure it was empty, and noticed how strong the metal was.  I set it in front of my back stop and shot it with an 18.1 grain JSB from 29 yards.  Pellet went through the front, and punctured but didn't penetrate the rear.

Spent about an hour out there yesterday and for nd the exact spot it was standing and the directing it went but colud not find it at all. Can only go to the end of my property. Probably wont be seeing that one again but there are several that come through regularly.

The only reason i was after them is because they have no fear what so ever of people and have walked right up to the back porch while i was standing there. I have seen 3 at the same time and when they get worked up you can hear several. 3 yotes that have no fear that close to the house is a recipe for disaster.

Will get the power tank all sighted in for next time. Still little aggrevated he was a runner and i could not track it. Dont like animals getting away.

A 20+FPE Disco and Magnum Springers will take a coyote no problem at close range as long as you hit the brain cavity - and Stonykill just provided proof.  It's all about shot placement.  We had GTA members kill coyotes with 14fpe .177 Springers at 15 yards with frontal "between the eyes" shots. 

If you can take raccoon and/or fox with your airgun, you can take a coyote.  One of our Hunting Gate Moderators dk1677 (aka Disco Dave) has taken several red and grey fox with his Disco .22 and many raccoons.  He can almost as easily take a Coyote.

 Indeed.  I have taken several coons, and a fox besides the yote with 14 to 18 FPE AG's. It is all about being patient, knowing your pellet penetrates well as well as flying EXACTLY where you expect it to land.

   You do not want to wound a coon, fox or yote, you just never know how they will react.

This happens at times and we've all made a shot and failed to retrieve the game. We except the failed attempt then push ourselves to take the time to make the best shot within our abilities. In the end it falls on the hunter and his or hers shooter and shooting ability as well as a precise shot. I've taken more Bandit's and other small game with my mid powered springers and feel completely comfortable doing so, know yourself and your shooter. Yotes are on my list but would love to use the Gamo Hunter Extreme.22 since she want's to harvest a yote badly lol. I believe he made a solid attempt to take the yote but as I mentioned in past post the 'unkowns" will show themselves when we least expect it. Adapt and hopefully learn something from it then move forward. Ed
