SEATTLE (Reuters) - Oregon Emergency Management on Friday advised coastal residents to evacuate before 7 a.m. local time due to the risk of a tsunami.

The massive 8.9 magnitude quake in Japan triggered tsunami warnings for most of the Pacific basin, including northern California and Oregon.

A spokeswoman for the state's emergency management office said no residents were being forced to leave. She said schools would be closed along the coast and the National Guard was on standby.

It blows my mind that a HUGE earth quake in Japan can toss boats around in Santa Cruz CA...been watching the local news and the coast guard trying to tie up boats. Its like a boat rodeo. this morning the Tsunami waves where rolling in and luckly it was low tide here(N. Cal). On the news they where interviewing local fishermen and they kept shaking their heads saying, "the water should be going out." and showing the water jaming into the harbor at a good clip. I hope the people of Japan come threw this the best they can.It's gonna take a long while to get it all cleaned up and sorted out.  i've been in big quakes, the biggest one was the 1989 San Francisco one, and i can honestly say it makes you feel real small..Bart

We had some flooding in South Maui. Kahalui had some flooding as well. Everything is fine out here though.
